Subject: Hornsby Board, overdriving an M1 preamp
Date: Tue, 11 May 1999 00:34:20 -0400
Anyone have recent experience with Hornsby soundboard access? Does he still
allow it & any suggestions of how to get one if you're in a large venue with
reserved seats (and stiff-armed security)? If you get a patch, can you hang
out by the board to monitor your machine, or do you have to go back to your
seat and trust fate?
And while on the topic of Hornsby's hot board, I've recently noticed that
mic level input to my M1 overdrives the preamp when levels are decent with
the volume approx. <= 3.5 (haven't tried line-in yet). This has always been
the case for my D7 (yes I learned the hard way), but I never noticed it
before on my M1, which is supposed to have a different preamp -- in fact I
seem to remember testing it (the M1) out when I got it a while back, and
being pleased that it didn't distort at 3.5. But I could've dreamed that. Is
this distortion normal for the M1? If not, what could have changed? If so,
does line-in bypass that circuitry, i.e., should line-in be more tolerant?

Hey there,
I'm looking for some suggestions to a problem I'm having making cds
from DATs. I just recently bought a DATPort and the instalation went
smoothly. When I try to make a cdr I record the show into Sound Forge
and that seems to go fine. When I play back the .wav file there are
these sputtering glitchy noises after about 20min or so. I've got a
PentII 450MHz, 160 megs of RAM and am recording to a 4gig hard drive
that is fairly empty. It sounds as if the file isn't being read
smoothly. Sounds like listening to a cybercast with a slow modem.
Has anyone run into this before? Doesn't sound like it's the DATPort
because the entire file does get transfered, but I could be wrong.
Any adice?

What a load! When playing back a tape in a DAT (audio) deck, if there's an
error it just keeps on going. In a DDS drive it'll back up and read
("play") the section again to try to correct the error. It can do this many
times in a row. If that isn't "frequent jogging back and forth" I don't
know what is.

Well, some actual information from Panasonic. This is certainly
something for the FAQ.

TDK DDS tapes are rated at 45C, which is more like 113F.
Anyway, this is very interesting. What is there in a DDS drive that
could possibly limit internal temperatures to 105F? If the ambient
temperature is 80F, that's an internal temperature rise of only 25F,
or about 14C.
The tapes in such a drive certainly don't seem any cooler than tapes
which come out of a DAT, but I don't suppose that counts for much.
I must bow to Panasonic's expertise in these matters. They are the
experts.

So Panasonic are denying what the manufacturer told us? Interesting.
Again, they are the experts, so I suppose they must be right.

It's good to hear some real information form a real manufacturer, but
this is a cheap shot.
The only way forward on this is for someone to find out the actual
specification for the tapes. I wonder if it's a public ISO/IEC spec.
Until then, it looks like people should not use DDS tapes in DAT
decks.
Andrew.

1. A motorcycle 12V battery(thats plenty for a show, but if you're on tour

larger marine battery).>>
A Mackie needs multiple bi-polar voltages, not just 12vdc.
<<2. An invertor(12VDC in, 120 VAC out).>>
Warning! Danger! Misinformation! Inverters *are* different. Without getting
too technical, most depend on the power transformer of the fed gear (your
console) to be part of a smoothing circuit to smooth an ugly
cheaply-produced square wave into something that resembles a 60-Hz sine
wave. OK. Fine. But the circuit that produces the square wave also
produces large over-voltage spikes that are fine for your blender, drill or
your PowerBook's switching supply, but that ugly waveform makes audio gear
go buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. You have to use an inverter that puts
out a true sine wave for audio gear to be hap-hap-happy.
One audio-oriented company makes a cute portable power system called the
FarOutlet; about $350; call for your price.

This depends. I have tried to reproduce this but never have. Only once have
I seen it happen, to a friend. And yes, I can confirm that we could play
back flawed audio on the recording. Once unloaded, the tape was never ever
playable again.
A DAT Head sent me a tape with this symptom before. I said I would try to
recover it, realign/misalign my decks to try to recover the signal.
Problem is, there was no signal I could see. Not on a CRO, or any other
means. Funny that. This is one of those mysteries in life that we'll never
find an answer to.
Probably just peculiar to the D3/D7/D8 mechanism. *shrug*
My guess is that if it somehow misloaded, out of alignment, and you could
retrieve a signal off it, then you can use the misalignment trick. But if
you get nothing, no A-Time, Recorded time, or any subcodes whatsoever, it
is probably blank.
Perhaps one plausible theory is that it was misaligned such that the
head/tape contact was marginal. Then the signal written was so low
magnitude, that it was indeed misaligned and also weak. After a while, it
fades into nothing.
Hey - that's the best plausible thing I can think of. Given the coercivity
of the metal particle tapes though, and the hysteresis curve of this kind
of tape, I doubt it seriously though.

Thanks. As for that kind of resolution and storage, perhaps we will see a
new breed of HD-DAT if there is enough demand.

It will not consistently forward tapes but it still plays and records fine.

Subject: DAT vs. DDS and manufacturers
Date: Tue, 11 May 1999 10:43:41 -0400
Folks,
While I won't dispute Panasonic's right to make up rules for warranties
that benefit them profit-wise, I'd like to say this: Has anyone else
noticed that when someone 'official' from a deck manufacturer addresses the
DAT vs. DDS issue, they ALWAYS fail to discuss the length of tapes. It
seems that while the typical DAT-head can handle knowing the difference
between 60 metre DDS, 90 metre DDS, 120 metre DDS-2 and 125 metre DDS-3
(the latter two quite likely having a different formatulation from the
typical audio grade tape), this is apparently too complicated for the
manufacturer. So ... rather than be honest and say that 60 metre DDS tapes
are probably fine it's simply more convenient to say that all DDS tapes are
bad and that'll void your warranty. Lame, lame, lame.
Cheers,
Dave

Does anyone know a good source or prices for the stand-alone cd duplicators. I'm thinking of the toaster-sized automatic types. A digi input would be nice, and I imagine you would need an external sample rate converter to get a true clone off of a 48 khz source. Ideally, a unit which could do good sample rate converting on the fly like a za2 would be the deal, but I doubt I'll find such an animal
I set up an AMD 350/64/6.4/za2 system w/ scsi plextors (40x read/8x write) for my friend, but he is windows illiterate, and is ready to give up the ghost in favor of an easy stand-alone unit. In which case, I might buy the system from him :)
Also, a little experience with the plextor 8x burner. The following discs seem to burn fine at 8x, and are readable in all players I've encountered so far:
