If it's done digitally, they're the same thing. (That is, any algorithm can be implemented either way, and the bits you get out are the same.) Hardware tends to be faster, because it's custom-designed, while software tends to be poorly written and runs on a badly-designed operating system using hardware that was optimized for no purpose understandable to humans. Of course, some algorithms are better (sonically and/or mathematically) than others. Seth

From: American-Digital <dan@am-dig.com> Subject: Ph & Fr 4/15-17/99 on 80min CDRs Date: Tue, 11 May 1999 19:26:24 -0400 I think what was so great about the recent Phil & Friends shows was that nobody knew what to expect, but everybody got what they wanted. I have REALLY enjoyed listening to these shows for the last 2 weeks. The following are my time breaks for 80 min. CDs. I thought that some folks might find this useful. For me, if it's possible not to interrupt the flow of a set and use a single disc, I'll do it. By using 80 minute CDs the following things happened. 1. 4-15-99 was able to go on 3 discs instead of 4. (Which then fits into one of our handy TriSlim 3 disc holders) 2. 4-16-99 the entire first set goes on a 80 min disc with no interruptions. 3. 4-17-99 the entire first set goes on a 80 min disc with no interruptions. 4. 4-17-99 the entire second set goes on a 80 min disc with no interruptions. I find that the extra 6 minutes comes in handy more often than one would expect. Many people were turned off by 80 minute discs b/c at first the only ones available we really poor quality. Now that we have a high quality 80 minute disc I use them without hesitation. Anyway, here are the timings for the Phil & Friends show when using 80min CDRs. 4-15-99 Schoeps MK21>AD1000>P1 (front bar rail) CD1 hello old friends (4:18), viola lee b's (33:59), big rr b's (7:26), jack-a-roe (5:31), cosmic chuck (11:53) Total 63:07 CD2 wolfman's bro (6:34)> space (7:40)> UJB (18:01)> jam (6:52) -set 2- alabama (8:39), sugaree (20:24) Total 68:10 CD3 like a rolling stone (12:46)> rider (10:01), r jimmy (8:16), shakedown (10:36)> jam/space (8:41), wheel (9:13), NFA (14:11) -encore- tamborine man (6:13) Total 79:57 4-16-99 Schoeps MK21>AD1000>P1 (front bar rail) CD1 help (5:50)> slip (17:31)> franklin's (14:27), wish u were here (9:10), 10ac jed (8:34), stella [instrumental] (8:23), Alligator (14:25) Total (78:20) CD2 -set 2- bertha (9:14)> prince caspian (14:21)> st stephen (15:55)> the 11 (8:06)> unbroken chain (10:41), chalkdust (11:37) Total (69:54) CD3 mnts of the moon (9:13)> scarlet (11:32)> fire (14:30) -encore- speech (4:16), intros (1:02), ripple (5:24) Total (45:57) 4-17-99 U89>AD1000>P1 (front bar rail) CD1 dark st [jam] (14:09)> rigor mortis (13:26), days b/w (12:24)> dark st [v1] (6:58)> my favorite things (9:06), 1/2 step (8:17), bird sg (13:18) Total (77:39) CD2 -set 2- terrapin (21:40), dw/d (7:57)> dark st [v2] (6:50)> other 1 [jam] (1:17), fotd (7:58), kc jones (6:42), dew (13:39), gdtrfb (11:40)> bid you goodnight (incomplete) (2:14) Total (79:57) CD3 -encore- speech (5:45), box 'o rain (5:34), intros (1:35) filler: ph & fr 9-24-94 DSS>DAT phil intro (2:48), kc moan (2:27), shoe fits (4:03), materpiece (4:57), cassidy (6:36), bird sg (10:26)> t-stones (8:38) Total (52:49) Please contact me, I would like to provide the seed for someone interested in running an 80 minute CDR tree. I realize that once you send an email you have absolutely no control of where it goes. I'm just thankful that I do Not own a Panasonic deck. Not that there is anything wrong with them. I just wouldn't want to end up on a warranty blacklist courtesy of this email. It does sound a lot like a witch hunt. 'Oh, you agree that you have used DDS tape? My tapes play / record straight through 99.9 % of the time. I can't see how One tape drive could be any different than another in terms of temperature. I think they All get hot. Well, for one thing he missed my point completely. But then again I wasn't writing to the gentleman directly. We musn't forget That. What I meant was that sucessfully backing up computer data is a lot more Important than archiving a music file. If a data backup tape fails important computer data can be lost permanently. Never mind that the ones and zeros are stored the same way. The point is that computer data tape has to be certified to a lower error count than does audio tape. An error on a backup tape can have disasterous effects in loss of data. Again, I can't see how one drive could possibly run any coller than any other (type) of drive. It seems to me that heat would be produced the same way in either case. I don't buy the rationale that a data drive is linear and doesn't jog back and forth. I have heard them clicking and 'jogging' back and forth. > >isn't recommended for use in DAT audio decks by many manufacturers. Just another 'blanket policy'. I want to know Why DAT machine manufacturers forbid the use of extra long (90 meter) tape if they 'have never seen any failure attributed to the length of the tape.' I don't get it. > >At this time I can tell you that we have voided the customer's warranty on > >several decks that have come in with damage caused by the use of DDS tapes It sounds like this is his real interest.
