Hey all,
I'm sorry for having to post this here, but anyone who needs a
ticket for the DMB/Santana/The Roots show at Foxboro Stadium
on May 29 (Sat.) please email me at Lerdawg@aol.com. I have on
extra and would like to sell it for the best offer, BELOW FACE ($42).
So if you need one for this sold-out show and want to save on those
nasty Ticketmaster fees, here's a chance.
I will B & P Phil and Friends 4/17/99 to the first to respond as
bandwith tax.
Peace,

I am going to buy a 9ft light stand that has a 3/8" in diameter top
post. Where can I find an adapter that will be able to accept a regular

I'm fairly certain the Marantz 615 and 620 sample rate convert in the digital
domain. No idea if either is still being made.

I once had a reel to reel tape that was recorded on the wrong side and it
was certainly playable, but had no high end. I don't know enough about
magnetics to speculate about DAT tape.

|Sony's resident DAT guru (Terrapin Tapes' Werner has his name and phone

|will assure anyone who cares (off the record, I imagine, though I didn't
|ask) that DDS tapes are fine to use in Sony recorders, at least.
Although
|he doesn't advise using 90M tapes, he acknowledges that with the R500 and
M1
|(and the newer transport R300) there should be no problems.
This guy isn't much of a guru if that's what he's saying about 90M tapes
in the R500 and M1. In the real world it's just not true. Everyone I
know with either of these decks or other Sony decks, this includes myself,
know that when you FF or RW 90M tapes in either of those decks things come
to a grinding halt. I've had my R500 for over a year and it's come to the
point where 90M tapes will actually stall and stop when FF/RWing,
everything is fine with 60M tapes, they wiz by when you FF/RW. Ever since
I got it, it's been slower with 90M tapes when FF/RWing, at first only
Sony DDS tapes, then the problem spread to all brands I've tried. My D8
bit the dust a long time ago, solely because I used 90M tapes in it. If
this is the advice you're getting, please go call the Oades and ask them
what they think, they're the one place I know of that are staunchly
against the use of 90M tapes. Save yourself some time and money and stay
away from them the best you can.

Denecke 48V Phantom Power Supplies (pair)
- low noise
- uses one 9V battery (each)
- long battery life from 8 to 76 hours (depending on mic load)
- low battery LED
- rugged light-weight construction
These power supplies are in excellent condition and have been used less
than a dozen times. They are a good option for powering a wide range of
mics.

Hi People,
For what little this is worth, I called the poor fool who included all
of her info within the chain letter (Roberta B). From what I could
tell, she did nothing more than fall victim to a chain letter. She said
she did this in FEBRUARY, just to give you an idea of how long she's
been regretting her mistake.
She asked that I post this note and ask everyone to please not call her
and if the letter pops up, to please DELETE it.
I don't know her or care if you harass her but thought I'd try to stop
at least some phone calls to her, she sounded like she was bummin'!

Subject: Panasonic DDS BS, hmmm...
Date: Wed, 12 May 1999 16:52:33 -0400
Hi Again,
I'm in a typin' mood I guess. Here's a thought on the BS about DDS
tapes. I would guess that by using DDS tapes, a person saves a minimum
of $2 per tape. I have been taping for just over a year now and have
probably bought near 200 tapes (I'm not disclosing which kind, don't
want the MAN to put me on his "do not service list" %^) thus, IF I am
using DDS tapes, I've saved myself near $400. Knock on wood, I've had
no problem as of yet and basing my assumptions on what I've read and
heard, I should be safe for at least one more year of repair-free
recording. By that point, my average savings, IF I'm using DDS, will be
about $800. My deck, bought brand new, only cost about $600, so by
using DDS (again, IF) I could buy a new deck with my savings. Now, of
course, you DAP1, HHB, etc. people will have to either buy a few more
tapes per year or hope your deck lasts longer than a couple of years BUT
using my theory, there's no reason to not use DDS.
Although somewhat serious, I do say this with tongue in cheek so please
no flames or in-depth, drag-on rebuttals (unless, of course, we can get
a good laugh outta it)!!
Peace,
Sean

You might have overlooked the most significant detail of the story (or maybe
the 6-o'clock news didn't bother to mention it).
The "official approval" permits sites to distribute GD MP3's only if they
derive absolutely no revenues from commercial advertising banners. (in
other words, the music cannot be used as bait to lure internet surfers to go
check out their sponsors)
Other sites (which have advertising banners) are being forced to take the
MP3's down.
excerpt from the Associated Press story:
"The announcement came after the band recently discovered
an Internet Web site that posted live concert MP3 songs,
but the site's owners also received revenues from banner
advertisements on the Web page."
Here's the analysis:
Bandwidth cost money. Popular sites use a lot of bandwidth. The Grateful
Dead are way popular. If a web site wants to pay (out of pocket) for the
bandwidth, then they are allowed to host the GD's MP3's and give them away
for free. If they are hoping to offset some of the bandwidth costs
through other site revenues, then they're in violation of the "official
approval".
In real practice, this new announcement is intended to force some MP3 sites
out of business, since much of the incentive of paying for said bandwidth
usage is based on the hopes of drawing attention to your commercial
interests. This a way of setting a precedent which can be used (for
example) to prohibit a website which sells tie-dyes from distributing the
GD's music. The implication is that the music is indirectly being used to
sell the product.

<<Given the poor electrical conductivity of most polymers, I find it very
unlikely for any signal from the heads to pass through the polymer backing

Quite correct, and made more impossible by the fact that at higher
frequencies (video, in this case) the magnetic flux generated by the heads
does not penetrate into the oxide very damn far. That is why standard audio
reel-to-reel tape had thick oxide and print-through. Also why the tape can
be made soooooo thin; one does not need a lot of oxide at these frequencies.
Also that is why one notices even slight scratches on video tape as
drop-outs. There ain't a lot of magnetism to recover, as there is not a lot
put down.

"DCP" works as it should on my equipment: Teac 55S burner, and a (circa
1992) Sony CDP-597 CD player with optical digital output. In fact, after I
take a disc out where every track was recorded with the DCP flag, it still
sends out an output of SCMS=00, until I put another kind of disc in. (This
is usefull to me when I record a minute of blank space at the beginning of
a DAT.) Every DAT I've recorded from that CD player with a DCP/SCMS=00 disc
also has SCMS=00. (If the disc had any SCMS code on it, my Sony PCM-R300
DAT would record that level of SCMS on the DAT.) I suspect it might be your
CD player, or even your CD burner, which might not support that subcode. I
now burn all of my CD-Rs with DCP, except the ones I make for commercial
sale (I do a small business on the side for friends' bands that want to
sell their own CDs at shows).
AFAIK, the "4CH" flag is totally useless for the vast, vast majority of
people out there (if not everyone) -- I don't know of any CD players that
support it, for one. Even if it were widely supported, the sampling rate is
much lower for 4CH than plain old stereo.
Peace,
<> David
