From: "mark wilkins" <wilkinsmd@hotmail.com> Subject: Eveready batteries Date: Wed, 12 May 1999 16:43:35 PDT Greetings fellow portable electronics users! In case you weren't aware Eveready seems to be in the midst of a marketing push. Recently they inserted a coupon in our local paper for $1 off a pack of alkaline batteries and another for $1 off a pack of lithium batteries (valid for the AA 2-pack). Then at Target the other night they had instant rebate coupons, the deal is you buy two multipacks and get a 3rd free, right on the spot (no mailing in receipts etc). The instant rebate is only for the larger packs of Alkalines (8-AA, 8-AAA, 4-C, 4-D, and 2-9V) and expires near the end of May. The rebate coupon doesn't appear to be specific to Target, that's just where I saw it. Good time to stock up! From: Travis Young <young.28@wright.edu> Subject: Re: CDRWIN subcode issues Date: Wed, 12 May 1999 20:49:50 -0400 >From digestifier #950 If anyone is using CDRWIN (www.goldenhawk.com) don't put the subcode "DCP" (digital copy permitted) in the subcode area. It won't fix what you feel it should fix, which is SCMS related issues. I have tried it and it doesn't do anything. reply: I have been informed by a few fellow Heads the problem I experienced with the "DCP" subcode flag on CDRWIN might be related to my coax out or my CDP-707ESD CD player itself. So feel free to try! -Thanks to David and Sam Trav
From: Jason Reiser <jreiser@ecoutez.com> Subject: Re:taping on reverse side of tape? Reply-To: jreiser@ecoutez.com Date: Wed, 12 May 1999 21:01:41 -0700 The arguments about why a recording cannot be made on the reverse of a DAT tape all sound quite interesting. I'd believe it if not for the fact that I've done it. About two years ago this topic came up, and someone mentioned they had a tape that they thought must have recorded on the reverse side of the tape. So I had an idea on how to flip the entire tape, end to end, and check if there was any music on the back. Before he sent the tape to be to try it, I wanted to try recording on the back side of a DAT to even see if it could hold data. This was a new Ampex 60m DDS tape recorded with a D8. The few minutes I recorded on the wrong side of the tape *did* record, and played with no audible errors. I didn't have a deck with an error counter, and I imagine this is not the best way to archive music. ;) I'll see if I can find that tape anywhere, but I suspect I trashed it as I was a bit fearful of using it by accident after the surgery. For the curious, I started by cutting the tape in the leader at the start of the tape. I then flipped the tape 180 degrees and spliced the break back together. Then I carefully would the tape manually (with a pen) to the very end, all the while keeping the twist I'd created at the cartridge opening so it didn't get crunched on the spool. Once I got to the end, I cut/spliced again to get rid of the twist. This effectively duplicates the theoretical "tape flipped during loading" situation where D7/D8 decks might be recording on the wrong side of the media. Sadly, after performing the same surgery on this fellow DAT-Head's tape, I wasn't able to recover any music from the tape. If folks still insist it can't be done, I'll duplicate the experiment and send the results. See ya, Jason jreiser@ecoutez.com

Reply-To: romain@icp.siemens.com Date: Wed, 12 May 1999 18:40:43 -0700 (PDT) | I am going to buy a 9ft light stand that has a 3/8" in diameter top | post. Where can I find an adapter that will be able to accept a regular | mic thread? I have the Bogen/Manfrotto 3/8" to 5/8" microphone adapter (#3366). Pro photo shops should be able to special order it for you. I got mine a few months ago from Adorama Camera in New York for $5.95 apiece, but they were backordered for a couple of weeks. Also, Audio Engineering Associates stocks their own model (AEA-TA2 3/8F to 5/8-27M threaded adaptor, silver $7.50) and there's also an AEA-TA1 which would be good for folks with 1/4"-20 threaded light stands (the Manfrotto model apparently needs an extra layer of adaptor in that case). See http://www.wesdooley.com/prices/pricefrm.html I use mine with a 17' Manfrotto light stand. In retrospect, I would have been better off with the 13' model -- it sounds stronger and probably doesn't wobble as much at the top. From: EZ <eric@ptd.net> Subject: Good CD-R Drive Under $400? Date: Thu, 13 May 1999 00:11:21 -0400 Hi, I recently found out today that my Sony CD-R drive only supports track-at-once mode, which defeats the whole purpose of why I wanted a CD-R. TAO mode is fine for studio recordings, but for a live show I will need a CD-R with disc-at-once mode. The drive was a gift, so I'm not going to complain, but I'm looking for suggestions on a drive that supports disc-at-once mode, and one that is preferably $400 or under. Any suggestions? I'm also selling my Sony drive for $180 if anyone is interested, it works great, it just doesn't support DAO mode. Thanks, -Eric
From: Aaron Baraff <dgregory@mole.uoregon.edu> Subject: Phish: RIG LOCKOUT REVISITED and attention patchers!!! Date: Wed, 12 May 1999 21:38:33 -0700 I'm forwarding this to the list for Derek Gregory <dgregory@mole.uoregon.edu>. Please respond to him and not to me. Thanks. -Aaron Hey all, I just wanted to tell the world how happy I am to be the proud owner of 14 LAWN tickets! I fell like standing on every mountain top and just yodelling in pure joy and ecstacy;-) Well sarcasim aside, I'm looking for extra tapers for Merriwether->Deer Creek. Obviously lawns aren't the greatest incentive for a trade but I can offer one cash, patch, clones: disc or DAT, or a trade for some of the Northwests finest. Certainly I can offer a carefree patch to someone w/ the assurance of being first out of the APOGEE even if you have a Sony portable. I hate trying to sell myself and my rig but I've been left absolutely no choice. The rig is: Schoeps CMC6(21,4,41)>Audio Magic cables>Lunatec(?)>ApogeeAD1000>HHb PortaDAT This is the same rig that did the Phil & Phriends from the drink rail minus the lunatec. I put a question mark by the Lunatec only after the steller results from the Phil & Phriends w/out the Lunatec. I'll also be trying ticketbasterd for some better seats to trade. Thanks for hearing me out. dissapointed, Derek Gregory P.S. I can also offer up the Phil and Phriends for the hook up if you don't have it already.
From: Kurt Vogel <kwvogel@yahoo.com> Subject: Terrastock II for b&p Date: Wed, 12 May 1999 21:43:26 -0700 (PDT) About a year ago I ran a set of tapes from the KFJC broadcasts of this show as a back-up for a friend who was also taping the broadcasts. 3 days, around 40 bands. Reception was reasonably good-- I strung a dipole across the living room (which my wife really dug!) You can find a list of the bands that played at: http://www.terrascope.org/twesttxt.html There is 1 sony 120 min tape and 8x90 meter DDS tapes. I'll trade for a box of 10 new (shrink-wrapped) good name-brand 120 MINUTE/60 meter tapes-- I'll pay postage to even out the 10-for-9 tape ratio so no one flames my ass. 2 or 3 bands have their sets cut where I switched tapes (I ran home from work, switched tapes, and ran back!)-- I think 1 or 2 is also in LP mode, and I've had problems in the past getting 90 meter LP tapes to play on the machine they weren't taped on so there's no guarentees from me! Looking for a quick trade-- no time to make clones for individual trades. Kurt Looking for HQ tapes of: Icu, Add N to X, Kraftwerk, new Meat Puppets! _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
