From: James Treworgy <jamie@treworgy.com> Subject: RE: Panasonic's reply to Omar (long) Date: Fri, 14 May 1999 09:35:46 -0700 I have to say this Panasonic fellow is continuing to lose credibility in my eyes. We see things like "technical support manager" - always the expert on the material construction of tape media. Until I see an engineer's name (and phone number or email address) this remains bunk. "the tapes are quite different and not interchangeable" - yet still with no actual *description* of these so-called differences. What is the formulation of DAT vs. DDS? Until I see in writing, with a name and address or phone number, a statement to the effect that "DAT and DDS tape does *not* come off the same assembly line, here's what's different" this is still a lot of marketing. Considering that we have a statement sent to Terrapin Tapes (in the last digest) which *is* actually from an engineer at Maxell, and *does* describe material differences between DAT and DDS tape - which amount to, for 60M tapes, that DDS is more rigorously tested, I don't see why this fellow should have any credibility here than Barney. Finally, as for the recording audio tax, which another of these knowledgeable "technical support representatives" said only applies in Canada, the Audio Home Recording Act of 1992 (A US, not Canadian, law) states: "Obligation to make royalty payments: (Sections 1003 to 1004) U.S. manufacturers and importers must make payments as follows: ... * for digital audio recording media, 3% of the wholesale price." From: Jay Lyons <jayl@southeast.net> Subject: CD_R labeling pen Date: Fri, 14 May 1999 10:17:58 -0400 Hi, sorry to trouble but I've searched office max, office depot, compusa etc( this town ain't got no staples) and no one knows what I'm talking about when I ask for a pen that I can directly write onto a CD-R with and have no fears of contaminating the dye. Can anyone help/direct me? I received one CD-R from a friend and tho it played fine on my home unit(carrousel) I couldn't get it back out of the machine. Turns out the label( on printed paper) he'd put on it was too think and wouldn't allow it to slide back outta the drawer. this has inspired me to turn to labelling with the pen only. are there other solutions? My home decks, cs/dat, are still down so I can't trade at this time.
From: Drummerist@aol.com Subject: ISO: Lemonwheel Schoeps DFOBs Please!!! Date: Fri, 14 May 1999 10:25:12 EDT Hey Everybody, I'm looking for these tapes (both days) if anyone wants to set up a trade. Drop me a line and I'll send ya my list. Thanks, Luke
From: "Rob Bertrando" <rbbert@earthlink.net> Subject: DDS vs DAT Date: Fri, 14 May 1999 07:51:34 -0700 >>. Because there are people that have had no problems with 90M tapes you can't just simply conclude that 90M tapes are fine when there are plenty of decks going in for repair cause of these very real problems associated with only 90M tapes. << Exactly, anecdotal evidence is just that, and applies no less to your tales of woe RE: 90M tapes wearing out decks. As I mentioned earlier, Terrapin Tapes has the number for Sony's DAT technical support head tech, but I wouldn't be surprised at this point (given the legal questions about copying, etc, which are certainly at the fore these days due to DVD-Audio) if he's unwilling to talk about "gray" issues even "off the record". However, he used to be, and everything I've posted comes from this source, which I have no reason to disbelieve (and many reasons to trust). I honestly thought all this had been hashed out a few years ago here, but some people apparently have other agendas. As alluded to earlier, all the hardware manufacturers are treading a fine line these days re: copy protection. The new DVD-Audio standard has a proposed copy protection scheme which will audibly degrade the sound, which should tell you whence the music industry is coming. I don't think any company representative would be allowed to say anything supporting copying, or avoiding the royalty tax on digital media.
From: Jeramy Daniels <jeramy@abcpolymers.com> Subject: DDS vs DAT Date: Fri, 14 May 1999 11:10:17 -0400 well All I have to say is DDS's can, and do drag in my DA-P1 and I for one do not want to take any risks in regards to my portable DAT, however I feel I could probably run over my tascam 302 home deck and it still keep ticking. just my preference I prefer not to, but I will run them in my home deck but never in my portable deck. One Problem, the music disappears intermittently, not dig noise or drops, just no music, faulty patch or connection somewhere I guess. It happens once in the middle of Gotta Jiboo, and a few times in the depths of "Will it go round in Circles". Anyone with a complete and tasty tape please, please help out, AKG 3000s, Neumann U89's, know i saw some schoeps, How'd the FOB come out? Nak 300s. Lot's to trade!!! Hopin' someone can hook me up with the phatty tape of last nite's show, bunch of folks who were there are looking for an unscathed copy of the show. I will be taping Albany with either AKG480s>MEV100>SBM1 or hopefully a friends Schoeps MK4>VMS02IB. BTW, the crowd was enthusiastic (very much so) but not as loud as it seemed to have been on other nights of the tour, thus, the Acoustic set from last night is a winner. Crowd screaming is not as much of a problem on the tape as I expected it would be, couple of gain shifts after the first few songs, not bad at all. If i get a good tape I will gladly do some B&Ps for it and already have many analogers patiently waiting. TFTBW! From: "Scott Bernstein" <scott_bernstein@hotmail.com> Subject: Re: Recent Maxell 90m problems Date: Fri, 14 May 1999 16:24:28 EDT This is a very interesting post from Gary here to me. It so happens that in a 100 lot of Maxell 90 meter tapes that I bought about 6 months ago I have had an unusually high (6 or 7) tapes fail due to super tight friction with the shell. In all cases, I would rewind/FF the tape before a show with no difficulty (or none that I notice). Then I record the show seemingly OK, but when I get home and try to rewind the tape, it seems a little reluctant, but rewinds. When I try to play it the tape has jamming problems in the deck and then when I pull it out, tape is hanging out of the shell. When I open the tape-protecting guard at the front of the tape and try to wind the tape back in, I notice that one of the hubs is VERY tight or will not turn at all! Some of the tapes loosen up after I fiddle with them (turn the hubs back and forth), but many of them do not, or when I think I've got them loosened, they tighten back up in the deck. I've had 3 of them actually BREAK in the deck while trying to use them, one that was unplayable in any form, and 2 that I just had to trash. Luckily I was able to get dubs from people who were patched out of me at shows, but I wanted to confirm that this has been a small problem for me. Now when I come home from a show I worry that my tape is going to have this problem! Luckily I'm down to less than 30 in this batch, so I'll be done with them soon. One thing that I've noticed is that the recent Maxell tapes I've been seeing people getting have a NEW shell design from the ones that I have. The ones that I have have horizontal lines going across the black part of the shell on the front. The new ones have more of a "sandpaper"-y kind of surface and say "ASSEMBLED IN USA" printed on the side. Just my $0.02 incase anyone else is having a problem with these tapes. Same location? Same stereo configulation?? Same recording level? It's pointless to compare two recordings if they arent made in the same manner. That said, "imaging" is a stereo concept and has very little if anything to do with the brand of microphone used and everything to do with the placement and configuration of the stereo pair and the skill of ther person recordin ghte show. True, if the mics are very poorly matched the image might suffer, but HQ mics...Neumanns, Schoeps, AKGs, DPAs, Geffels, Sennheisers...etc...don't exhibit this. It's obvious that you are not working from a sound basis in recording theory or practice, and are merely tossing around terms like "imaging" for some reason. As an aside, it's interesting that since 1995, it seems, certain folks who once swore by Schoeps (even when other mics were available and in wide use) now bash them routinely....even when everyone else I know thinks the tape sounds amazing. > in ATL and the warfield in SF were this could apply and I have seen 28 So you're saying that, all else equal, in historically great sounding rooms the Schoeps sound better? > panic shows 6 galactic shows 2 leftover, 1 string cheese and various others > local bands around ATL GA in the last 365 days. It might have something to so with have anything to do with the fact that the sound at Panic shows is typically much worse than that of other bands. This isnt just my experience...this is the consensus of many diehard Panic heads who feel that, even with the new PA, the FOH person simply can't get it together most of the time. > If you feel confident with your, and I mean your rig, not some tape you > dubbed from someone and want to go toe to toe and we can match venues > lets get it on. Better yet, why don't you do some true comparisons...same location...same stereo configuration, same recording levels, then issue your challenge. If you already have, then find a person on Phish tour this summer running Schoeps CMC641s into an Apogee AD-1000 and run on the same stand, in the same configuration and try to match the levels as closely as possible. I have this rig, but so do many of my friends, so its all the same. I'm not predicting which tape would sound better, just insisting that it be a controled experiment. > I am not really this arrogant I just thought it would be fun to compare > some of the top of the line rigs out. > thanks for playing. You wouldn't sound so arrogant if your post didn't lack credibility. I'm not really this pissy...just thought I would rant because it's Friday and my stocks are down and I got lawn tix for my mail order. ===================== Craig Hillwig chill@teamschoeps.org chill@well.com
