Hey folks. Just jumping back here after a 1y leave.
I'm looking to upgrade my mics and am looking for opinions and names of other
mics I should check. I am also willing to accept quotes/bids from any lurking venders.
Details.
I'm willing to spend about $2k for a pair.
They will mostly be used in ORTF and NOS configurations for recording
field sounds, including campfire music, nature sounds and occasional small/medium venue concerts.
I currently mostly record MS with a Sure VP-88 but want a better mic, as well as need a solution to
when MS is not appropriate (still plan on mostly MS recording). I'm mostly recording Directly to a DAP-1.
What I want is FLAT and ACCURATE. Bass Roll-off and PAD is nice to have.
Removable capsules are nice incase I want to get a fig-8 or hyp-card down the road.
Low self noise is also VERY important. Stealth is not an issue as I have to much
respect for the musicians to EVER record without permission.
Mostly I seem to like Senheiser MKH40.
The only drawback is non changeable capsules, $$$, and the are a bit big (heavy).
The Neuman KM140 looks nice but is not as flat, nor has the bass roll-off (which I use allot).
Are there any other mics I should consider?
How about zeppelins and shock mounts
I would want one that could be used for XY, NOS, ORTF & MS
that would have some sort of elastic suspension or similar.
Unfortunately out here there are no places where I could go to listen to
mics of this caliber so I am hoping for folks thoughts on this.
Thanx for you help

I assume that the Lucid is a digital in to PC interface?
(what do I know - I'm using custom AKM based A/Ds and D/As and a Gina card)
If this is so you are (and should be) digital all the way from the
Tascam to the PC. Since there is no analog going on here
what the computer gets is an EXACT copy of what is on the DAT,
which is what you want. Anything from there changes things.
This is why you want to do any level changes, compression, nominalization
etc after the transfer from the computer in the PC domain (unless you have
digital mastering equipment - but I assume you are not at that level)
The only thing to watch out for now is quantization artifacts.
Since the PC will use floating point math there will always be some
error besides jut level control. Some PC programs do all math at 16 bits
which can be bad news, some are 24 bit (like sound forge) and some are
32 bits (like Cool Edit) the more bits the less error and the less quantization noise
you will here.

This is the remote that comes with the D-100 but not
the M1 (and works with either the D100 or M1).
Retails for $99 and you can see a picture and
description at:
http://www.american-digital.com/rmed100.html
You can monitor levels on the remote while your deck
is safely tucked away (though the remote is not
back-lit). Controls on the remote include:
ff/rew/play/stop/hold/counter mode/volume/clock/AVLS.
You can also plug headphones into the remote but they
are not included.
It works fine, but aside from making sure it works, I
have never used it.
$50, I'll pay priority mail shipping in the US.
Thanks
Kurt

Hello All,
I was hoping someone out there could give me some advice. I'm looking into
purchasing a CD Burner & Sound Card. I'm looking into the Yamaha CRW-4416EZ
& the Yamaha CRW-4416S. What I can't figure out is what is difference
between Interface E-IDE & Interface SCSI-2. That is the only difference
between the 2 models as far as I can tell. I'm also looking into purchasing
the Ziafro ZA-2 Sound Card. Was wondering if anyone is currently using that
setup & what they thought of it. Also curious if anyone could recommend a
place that is currently selling these items at a low low price. The lowest
price I've gotten on the burner was $349. Last but not least, wondered if
anyone could recommend a brand of CD's to buy. Currently I'm buying Memorex
74 min. Cd's. Comp USA by me is selling 15 packs w/ jewel cases for $24.99.
I have a couple of friends who use Memorex, so this is the only brand I am
familiar w/. I guess that's all the questions I have for now. Thank You for
the Help!!!!

Hi, I need a favor from someone - Marine Research (featuring some former
members from Heavenly/Talulah Gosh) will do a Peel Session on Tuesday's Peel
Show, and I'd appreciate if someone can record all of Peel's Program (is it 2
hours?) on SP, 120minute (60meter) DAT/DDS for me, so I can hear the session
as well as the rest of Peel's program.
I do have analog tapes (several low gen) of Talulah Gosh/Heavenly shows from
1986 to 1996, and many of my 1986-1987 shows are very decent, and most TG
fans know how hard it is to find good low-gen copies of those shows since
most were taped on cheap tape recorders by fans of the band who weren't as
concerned with sound quality.
if anyone can help, please let me know. i also tape shows using D100, and
I'm expecting a new pro deck next week (so that i can FINALLY copy those
Rufus shows to those who are waiting) so can make SCMS-free clones etc. I
just taped Modern English on Saturday, plus still try to tape/trade most
UK-indie bands...
any help is appreciated, thanks!

About a year. There aren't any M1s much older than that, are there?

No idea.

2:25. But it *is* a tiny portable, so that's really not so bad.

Your logic seems to be that it stopped working with 90m tapes, so the
cause of the problem must have been the 90m tapes. Erm.

Subject: "CDR Pen" and other mysterious CDR accessories

I generally believe that a company trying to sell a $5 pen is probably
not the best source of info, esp not when that $5 pen competes with good
ol' Sharpie.
Of course, I admit, I quit writing on the discs with
sharpies after I heard about this, opting only to write on the inner
ring. I also use a Neato CD labeler (another supposed "deadly glue
solvent") so we'll see what happens with that.
What I really wonder is, can anyone here definitively say THEY PERSONALLY
have had a disc mysteriously stop playing due to solvent-based ink?
Clearly,m if you put a sticky note on a fragile surface, it will yank
some of it off. That's not rocket science. I'm only interested in pen
ink. I have some discs with sharpie on them, and I'm wondering now if I
ought to seriously consider backing them up. I'm hopeful that no sane
person who handles discs properly can say they blame the ink. Thus far
in my foray into the CDR world, it appears what really destroys them is
good old fashioned negligence and misuse.
an unusual question/opinion mix? I thought so.

In DAT-Heads Digest #959, Rick Rombak <rick@knight-barry.com>
asked:
>does anyone have any information on either of these units? what to >pay?,
>how does it record, sound?, what is comparable?, any
>information is appreciated.
I bought an HHb CDR-850 a month ago and am currently one happy puppy.
Here's a quick list of the machine's features:
- Analog XLR and RCA inputs and outputs.
- Analog XLR inputs and outputs can be switched +4dBu / -10dbu
from the front panel.
- S/PDIF coax and optical inputs and outputs.
- AES/EBU XLR input.
- Wired remote control input.
- Wireless IR remote provided, can be disabled on front panel.
- Can use CDR and CD-RW blanks, computer or consumer.
- Ignores SCMS on input. You can set the SCMS code on the CD
you are recording.
- Built-in sample rate convertor. Will automatically convert
32 or 48 kHz to 44.1 kHz. If set to "Sample Rate Converter
Off", will not resample 44.1 kHz input. If set to "Sample
Rate Convertor On", will resample 44.1 khz input (useful for
44.1 kHz Varispeed input).
- Digital recording modes: 1-track synchro (record 1 track, stop
when the next Start-ID is encountered), all-track synchro
(record multiple tracks and convert Start-IDs to track marks),
manual record (mark tracks yourself).
- Built in digital fader 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 seconds.
- Auto or manual finalize
- Multiple erase options on CD-RW: unfinalize, erase last song,
erase all songs, wipe entire disc.
- Digital output can be switched off.
- Auto-stop on digital recording after 0 or 10 seconds of digital
silence, or ignore digital silence.
- OPCs every disc for recording.
- Can automatically insert track marks, from analog input, when
signal goes below a certain level (You set this level).
- Auto-pause on playback (paly one track, then stop)
- All functions can be controlled from the front panel.
All in all, IMHO, a very nice deck. I imagine the Fostex CR300 is
similar, except for maybe the A/D convertor quality. However, I
just saw the HHb CDR-850 Plus on their website. It has the following
additional features:
- Word clock in (for synchronized playback in a digital studio).
- AES/EBU XLR output (also transmits Start-IDs through that XLR).
Anyway, I paid $999 for mine. Klay Anderson and MasterpieceAV
both carry the CDR-850 for that price. Both are exceedingly
reputable and customer-friendly in my dealings with them.
