From: Rich Perlman <montclair@cyburban.com> Subject: Re: Recent Maxell 90m problems Date: Mon, 17 May 1999 11:42:17 -0700 Gary Davis wrote: Maxell changed their shell design a few years back, and many (all) of the Maxell tapes I've seen recently appear to have a higher drag (reel friction), as well as making a noise when they FF/RW, and they *definately* show the "blank" problem on a D8 long before a 90m Fuji/KAO/(Sony?) or other brand. Scott Bernstein added: This is a very interesting post from Gary here to me. It so happens that in a 100 lot of Maxell 90 meter tapes that I bought about 6 months ago I have had an unusually high (6 or 7) tapes fail due to super tight friction with the shell. Hi All, I had the same exact problem with a 50 lot. I don't recall if it was 90m AND 60m, or just 90m. My vendor was out of stock on Fuji DDS (my current fav), so I decided to try Maxell HS/4. When unpacking tapes, I heard the same dragging sound (chuh - chuh - chuh - chuh) that Gary speaks of. I'm sticking to Fuji. I also recall at least one other DAT-Heads post (6 months ago?) claiming the same noises. Surely, we can't be the only ones... YMMV.... Tape on - Rich Perlman

From: KindTaper@aol.com Subject: Anyone familiar with Pavement's taping policy? Date: Mon, 17 May 1999 13:40:26 EDT I would like to tape a couple of upcoming pavement shows. From what I understand, they do not like pro taping (I guess this means mic stand and gear), but will give sbd patches to a Sony D-8. It makes no sense to me why they would give board access but wouldn't allow people to bring in mics, but if anyone can clarify this for me, I would be very appreciative. Please e-mail me or post this info to the list. thanks, Wes Kindtaper@aol.com

Granted i am new to this, any and all comments = >are appreciated. As I recall, the only person who's claimed that the 90m DDS tapes are more abrasive is a Maxell rep who informed a Panasonic rep of this. Other Maxell reps have not claimed this, nor has anyone else to my knowledge. 90m tapes are absolutely thinner than 60m tapes--that's how they get the extra 30m in there. Probably all decks can handle 90m tapes on occasion, as long as they're not used on a regular basis. (I'm not sure how much damage a single pass through the average DAT recorder 90m tapes cause, and how it builds up over multiple passes.) If you've got a 2h 30m show, you can either use a 90m tape or split it up over two 60m tapes. You can also get a deck that's claimed (by users, if not the manufacturer) to handle 90m tapes well. and ElTortuga4@aol.com wrote: >When I bought my Sony PCM 2600 (from an authorized Sony Dealer) they >ADVERTISED that the 4 Direct Drive Motor was capable of handling 90M tapes >without any fear of wearing out the motor. I don't know if Sony will stand behind the claims of one of their dealers, even if they're "authorized", when Sony doesn't make those claims. AFAIK, Sony has never made those claims. There are 90 meter DAT tapes out there from TDK, but I don't know of any others. Already tried that, Eugene? > > Tom One way to look at it is that you're cancelling out the M component of a M-S mix when you combine coincedent cardiods out of phase. I've only tried using an AT822 in fig-8 to record acoustic guitar and not pick up too much vocal, and that was some time ago. Not surprisingly, I seem to remember the polar response not being as flat as your typical fig-8 mic. I don't own an AT822, but perhaps someone who does can give it a whirl in M/S configuration and let us know how it turns out. It certainly could be a nice way to upgrade to a more flexible setup without having to buy two new mics if you already own an AT822. -Eugene

From: Charlie Brush <charlieb@cwix.com> Subject: Power for Graham-Patten DMIC-20? Date: Mon, 17 May 1999 20:45:36 -0400 Hey all- I will be receiving my new Graham Patten DMIC-20 Pre-Amp-A/D this week and am looking for portable power options. I'd prefer to use something more inexpensive than the Eco Charge. I'd like to get a few inexpensive rechargeables(for festivals, etc.) or just regular 6 Volt batteries. I'm looking for specific manufacturers/model #'s for batteries that will power this Pre-amp. Someone told me they use the Sonic PS-670, 6 volt 7.0 amp hour battery, which can be purchased from House of Batteries, but the recharger for it is out on back order and I need something asap. The DMIC-20 comes with some type of connector for the battery, but I'm not sure the name of the device and if it can connect to a 6 Volt battery purchased at a place like Radio Shack. I called Graham Patten and they didn't have an answer for me, but are looking into it. Thanks for the help! http://members.tripod.com/~groovin/index2.html Charlie
From: Aaron Westendorf <westea@rpi.edu> Subject: D8 dead, need opinions on options Date: Mon, 17 May 1999 20:56:37 -0400 I recently sent my D8 into Sony for repair, only to have them tell me that it's been "excessively used" and that they are refusing to charge me the flat rate. Considering that the repairs total $471 if I also replace the front display panel (~$300 just for the heads), I'm pretty much stuck with coming up with another solution. It's kind of a difficult decision, I just bought a pair of AKG C1000S' (thanks Mark!), and I was planning on getting a DATPort and Plextor 4X burner, basically relegating my DAT for mastering and some tape trading, but mostly for DAT>CD. To make a short explanation somewhat longer, I don't want to give up on plans of live taping, considering there aren't too many Agent Porridge tapers out there, I want to make sure that I can record each and every show I go to (FWIW, their soundboards are pretty bad right now since they're still working on their equipment setup). So, here's some ideas that I came up with (please no emails telling me to buy a DA-P1, I can't afford it), and I could really use some feedback on: 1)Buy a new D8. Since it's not used (like the last one), I can get the extended warranty, and run it as much as I want and get it repaired as often as needed. 2)Buy an M1, which has a cleaner pre-amp. Slightly more expensive, but now I'm not dealing with SCMS, and my recordings will sound slightly better. The only drawback to this is that I'll need to modify my car and battery adapters to deal with the 4.5V input as opposed to the 6V of the D8. Further, there's the whole issue of the output voltage of the M1 not being compatible (even though I do have an active Oade cable) with D8's. I'm not even going to add more fuel to the fire, but real world experience has shown me that there are problems, and it must be a considered. Warranty situation is the same as with the first option, 5 years extended. 3)This one I just thought of today, and if I can make it work, I would definitely like to go this route. Basically, the heads are ~$175, and the pinch roller assembly is about $19. Sony estimated 2 hours of labor to install them. What occured to me is that I might be able to put in the new drum and pinch roller, and then send it off to someone who can do the tensioning and adjustments, and voila!, it's up and running again, for about $250. I can then buy a new home deck (preferably from the person who adjusts the deck), and all of a sudden I'll have a D8 with new heads and pinch roller, used soley for mastering and some cloning, and a sturdy home deck (with 5 year warrenty) for regular listening, CD mastering, and recording for clones. I rather like this third option, since I don't really need the display replaced (I had only asked for an estimate on it's cost of replacement), and I would get a lot more out of it. If I do go with this, I'll need a little help with putting in the new drum, but after taking the deck apart a couple of times for a wet cleaning, I really don't think it would be that big of a deal. From what I could tell, there's just one screw holding the thing on, and since I'd be paying for someone else to make all the adjustments and alignments, I could save a lot of money by putting in the new drum by myself. If the proccess of replacing the heads is a lot more complex than this, than I'll probably go with option 1 or 2. Since each option has it's own merits and drawbacks, I'm having a really tough time deciding what I'm going to do, and could really use some help here. thanks, Aaron -- ==================================================== Aaron J. From: Ryan Ellingson <rellings@earthlink.net> Subject: Digital Soundcards and CD-Writers Date: Mon, 17 May 1999 18:43:07 -0700 Hey All, I posted a few days ago to get some info on what everyone thought about soundcards that can do digital in and out. I took all my responses and put them on a Word document. If anybody wants this let me know. What I've figured out so far is that the Soundblaster live is pretty much no good for the serious tape trader, although one person e-mailed me and said he really likes his. I got a mountain of e-mail on why the thing is no good though. The soundcard that sounds like a good one is the Zefiro ZA2, it will resample quickly but some people say it may be a little finicky installing. Or, if you have USB ports on your computer the Opcode DATport sounds like a simpler alternative, although you must be using Windows 98 to use the USB ports easily from what I hear. As far as CD-writers are concerned I have discovered the Plextor drive seem to be people's picks, although I haven't spent as much time researching the CD-writers as I have the soundcards. If anyone has anymore input I would love to hear about it. I hope this post helps at least a few people. Ryan p.s. If anybody wants to spin me a Strangefolk show or two for B&P I would really appreciate it.
