From: "Erik B." <erikb@erols.com> Subject: Chris Whitley @ Bowery Ballroom Saturday Reply-To: erikb@erols.com Date: Mon, 17 May 1999 23:09:24 -0700 I had been planning on seeing Chris Whitley, who now allows sbd taping, this Saturday 5/22 but don't think I'll be able to make it. Is there anybody here who is planning on going who would get a board tape of the show? I know who to talk to there.... Email me if so, Erik
From: Seth Breidbart <sethb@panix.com> Subject: Re: Tracks in Negative Time Date: Tue, 18 May 1999 00:20:59 -0400 (EDT) > I got a Cd with some of the tracks in negative time. For example if track > four was in negative time, at the end of track three the CD reads -5:10, > -5:09 etc. I am new to the CDR techniques and use CDRwin for recording my > discs. If someone could help me fix this is would be great. Thanks. That might be intentional. A CD has indexes within each track. Index 1 is at time 0 of the track (by definition). There usually isn't an Index 0; if there is, the track shows negative time between Index 0 and Index 1. I might use that technique for creating a CD of a concert, where I'd put Index 1 at the start of the music for a track. ("Skip to next track" goes to Index 1.) Look at the .cue file, and edit it by hand (using Wordpad or any other plaintext editor). The documentation for CDRwin explains how .cue files work. Seth
From: "Brian Price" <brianp@cjnetworks.com> Subject: 5/30 Tapers???? Date: Tue, 18 May 1999 00:17:25 -0500 I'm looking for a tapers ticket for the 5/30 show at Sandstone. Got the good old lawn seats from Mail Order. I do have some pavilion seats to trade if you have a spare to offer. One other question..... What section are the tapers tickets. I have some section 11 tickets which is directly behind the SB. Is this where the tapers section is for this show. Do the tapers tickets clearly say "taper"? I would hate to have a problem getting my gear in if I decide to try and bring it without a taper ticket. BTW I have the obligatory, shows/good karma/patch to offer.

What kind is good, > > where to get em, how much. I feel this is an important topic being I still > can't hear anything from last night's Deep Banana Blackout show. I have a pair of custom molded ear plugs, which you can get from an audiologist. They have 15 db attenuators in them (actually the "pads" are removable so you stick in higher or lower db ratings) and are relatively flat sounding. Some people refer to them as "musicians earplugs". Everything still sounds clear, just "turned down". Highly recommended if you care about your hearing! I can refer anyone to an audiologist in NYC.

From: Thomas Narten <narten@cs.duke.edu> Subject: Opcode datport Date: Tue, 18 May 1999 07:46:47 -0400 Seems that this device has been out long enough now that folks have experience with it. Questions: 1) Are folks having problems getting it to transfer data reliably from DAT to hardrive? As a comparison point, I'm thinking of the ZA2 where plenty of folks at times have had problems with random glitches in the received input stream. 2) Does the software/driver provide a good indication of when the transfer has succeeded glitch free? I.e., if you transfer data with no apparent errors, does that really mean there are no pops/glitches or does one in practice still need to listen to the transferred file to be sure? 3) Anyone have experience with this setup under NT? 4) For folks who have used it for a while, what are the main negatives/disappointments? Thomas

From: Hawker <Hawker@Connriver.net> Subject: RE: Power for Graham-Patten DMIC-20? Date: Tue, 18 May 1999 09:25:42 -0400 Gel-Cel 101.... I don't know what voltage a DMIC-20 needs. I'm assuming it is 6V or 12V. If it is something different you will need to add a voltage regulator.. write back if you need info on that. Other than that, IMHO the Eco Charge is a big rip-off. It is WAY overpriced for what it is. You should be able to use ANY gell cell battery to do this. Gel cells are preferable as they may be recharged b4 they are fully discharged. Nic-Cads need to be fully discharged b4 they are charged. To figure out what size you need look at the DMICs current draw in Amps (should be printed on it or ask there tek support). Multiply amps by the amount of run time you want from the battery and add about 25% headroom. For arguments sake lets say it is 500mA and 12v. In this case a 4AH (read Amp -hour) battery would give you a bit less than 8 hours of service. Use this to pick a battery size. To get a gel cell try calling a local place that does alarms and/or emergency lighting. You should be able to get a new 6-8AH 12V Gel Cell for $25-$50 tops. Most of these places cycle out "critical application" gel cells each year so you can often get a one year old cell for free or near free ($5-$10). There usually good for 3-5 years if properly cared for. I have piles of gel cells I have gotten free this way (and from Ham-Radio Fests). Charging is the key to making these batteries last long. Most chargers do not charge gel cells correctly. Gel cells need 4 exact charging cycles to maximize charge. Most chargers only give one or two. They best gel cell chargers out there are built around the Unitrod UC3906 Charger IC. There is a good charger in the ARRL handbook for this.. there is a good kit and/or preasembled charger built around this chip from Jade Products. http://www.jadeprod.com/ you could also use. From: Jonas <jlb20@duke.edu> Subject: nak300 active/stealth setups Date: Tue, 18 May 1999 11:39:56 -0400 (EDT) I hve been considering trying to use my Nak300 for stealth taping, but I have virtually no engineering-type abilities. Anyone out there still use one of these setups? What all exactly does it entail?? I know you need active cables, which I assume you have to have custom-made? Is anyone providing that service, or willing to? I'm not really sure I want to even do this, but it could be interesting.. I have mailed ordered religiously for shows on every tour since 95' & have always followed the instructions to the T with the US Postal Service Post Mark always being the 1st date of mail order, but this summers tour, my luck ran out. As the subject say's, I am looking for tapers tickets for the following shows. I run either a set of Gefell SMS M200's or M210's > Oade M248b or Schoeps CMC6 > VMS 021B into a HHb PDR 1000 (modified), so a quality recording is pretty much guaranteed and a digital or analog patch will be there for you. I appreciate the considerations. If you have an extra(s) tapers for one or all of these shows, please email me @ john@datrack.com to work out the details. Thanks for the consideration. 7-8-99 Virginia Beach Amphitheatre, Virginia Beach, Virginia. 7-9-99 Merriweather Post Pavilion, Columbia, Maryland. 7-10-99 E Center, Camden, New Jersey. 7-21-99 Star Lake Amphitheatre, Burgettstown, PA

From: Chris_Seward@woodberry.org (Chris Seward) Subject: cleaning cartriges Date: Tue, 18 May 1999 12:17:13 -0400 Hey everyone, What's the deal on reusing the dat cleaning cassettes? I've heard that it's really bad for the heads but I've also heard that it really doesn't matter. Could someone email me personally before I screw something up. Thanks for the b/w and time. Chris
From: Seth Breidbart <sethb@panix.com> Subject: Re: cleaning cartriges Date: Tue, 18 May 1999 12:30:53 -0400 (EDT) > What's the deal on reusing the dat cleaning cassettes? Some of them say they can be re-used (that is, rewound once they reach the end; they're all good for multiple uses). Other sources say not to. I'd say that if you ever used one when you saw an elevated error count, and it reduced the error count, then there's a lot of dirt on that section of the tape and you don't want to reuse it. (If you ever used one when there wasn't an elevated error count, why?) Seth
