From: "Stephen Rushmore" <srushmore@kenan.com> Subject: Sonicport vs. DATport Date: Tue, 18 May 1999 17:22:29 -0400 I am looking for a way to convert my music collection to my Windows 98 computer.  Right now I am thinking one of the Opcode products will be the solution.  Can someone explain to me if there any reasons not to purchase a Sonicport instead of a DATport?   They both are both selling for about the same price, yet the Sonicport can be used to transfer analog music.  They only disadvantage I can think of is that it uses 20 bits instead of 24.   - Stephen

Questions: > I've used it since about mid march and have done about 15 conversions on it since then, so I'll throw out what I know... > 1) Are folks having problems getting it to transfer data reliably from > DAT to hardrive? As a comparison point, I'm thinking of the ZA2 > where plenty of folks at times have had problems with random > glitches in the received input stream. > I've had problems once, but they were of an entirely different nature than the za2. the za2, as do many digital i/o cards, has problems with other devices accessing the dma buffer during a recording. notably, video cards with specific video drivers caused channel swapping and glitches. with the datport, as long as you don't have a conflict with your usb port in general, you should be okay. You shouldn't have any kinds of "noise." However, since the datport has no buffer at all, I need to 1) use cool edit pro because I found it has much more configurable buffering and 2) turn off everything running in the background to get a clean copy. otherwise, I get little "jumps" in the music where the buffer overran. > 2) Does the software/driver provide a good indication of when the > transfer has succeeded glitch free? I.e., if you transfer data with > no apparent errors, does that really mean there are no > pops/glitches or does one in practice still need to listen to the > transferred file to be sure? that's the thing - it doesn't provide any indication at all. with the za2, you got a little yellow dot if you overran the buffer at all. plus, it told you when it last happened so you could check it out. I could run experiments on how much I could do with my computer while recording. I discovered that I could even record a show to my computer _while_ burning another one to disc - even if I did overrun, the software would tell me and I coudl just do it over again. but the datport doesn't have a feature like that - there's no built-in buffer so it doesn't tell you if you overran it. I haven't been able to find such a thing in cool edit or sound forge, either. So what I do is take random 20 minute segments and listen to 2 or 3 of them, usually towards the end of the file. I also defrag the drive about once a week. > 4) For folks who have used it for a while, what are the main > negatives/disappointments? just the buffer factor, I'd say. I have to shut everything down, and that's a pain. its' damn affordable, though, and portable... allan

From: John Kellogg <phishjam@earthlink.net> Subject: ISO WinTaper Phish archive file Date: Tue, 18 May 1999 19:15:48 -0400 I noticed on the WinTaper site that there are databases for Dead and DMB, but not for Phish. If anyone has this can they e-mail this fileto me. My computer crashed and I cannot find the backup I made of my list of tapes. If anyone who uses WinTaper and has a large Phish collection and can send me their list file (wtf) and let me import the shows off their list to mine, I would truly appreciate it. I also don't have the registration no., but the demo works fine without it, I guess I never wrote it down. thanks, John Kellogg
From: SusanHAI@aol.com Subject: FS: Prodif 32 and Red Roaster 24 Date: Tue, 18 May 1999 20:11:51 EDT Prodif 32 -digital i/o via coax and optical (coax can be adapted for balanced xlr i/o) -PCI card for Mac or PC (WIn 95/98--I've heard a few probs. with those who run NT) -sample rate conversion -can ignore or write scms -low jitter design -full duplex for record/source monitoring (but I've never used it this way) -includes a 4 track samplitude studio program (but not the full pakcage available from SEK'D) -some other stuff that I forget I bought this brand new about 1 month ago. Works just fine but I decided not to go the computer/cd-r route. Setup/installation was a snap. $275 obo cost ~$375 new Red Roaster 24 -awesome stereo cd mastering program -sample rate conversion -will accept up to 96khz signal -has EQ, compression, dehissing and declipping software (and more) -up to 24 bit resolution $150 obo (~$235 new) I realize this is software but I cannot use it without the Prodif 32 so I am just trying to recoup my $$. I'll consider a reasonable offer(s). As I said, I decided not to go the computer route on burning cd's. However, with a nice cd-r unit, these two items make a sweet setup. Since I registered these products in my name, I'd be glad to maintain contact with the buyer(s) in case they need any tech. support or have warranty concerns. Please see the SEK'D webiste for complete info on these at: www.sekd.com regards, Patrick

I heard that there is a set "taper's section". Is this true, and if so, where is it located? (pavillion vs. lawn, relative to board). Are there a limited number of taper tix; how quick do they go? Any help is much appreciated. stay in the groove, Matt

From: Hawker <Hawker@Connriver.net> Subject: mic thoughts Date: Tue, 18 May 1999 21:53:06 -0400 Since it looks like eklektix ate #961 and #963 I assume this didn't get out the first time (unless you looked on the archive). If I'm wrong sorry for the repost. I'm looking to upgrade my mics and am looking for opinions and names of other mics I should check. I am also willing to accept quotes/bids from any lurking venders. Details. I'm willing to spend about $2k for a pair. They will mostly be used in ORTF and NOS configurations for recording field sounds, including campfire music, nature sounds and occasional small/medium venue concerts. I currently mostly record MS with a Sure VP-88 but want a better mic, as well as need a solution to when MS is not appropriate (still plan on mostly MS recording). I'm mostly recording Directly to a DAP-1. What I want is FLAT and ACCURATE. Bass Roll-off and PAD is nice to have. Removable capsules are nice incase I want to get a fig-8 or hyp-card down the road. Low self noise is also VERY important. Stealth is not an issue as I have to much respect for the musicians to EVER record without permission. Mostly I seem to like Senheiser MKH40. The only drawback is non changeable capsules, $$$, and the are a bit big (heavy). The Neuman KM140 looks nice but is not as flat, nor has the bass roll-off (which I use allot). Are there any other mics I should consider? How about zeppelins and shock mounts I would want one that could be used for XY, NOS, ORTF & MS that would have some sort of elastic suspension or similar. Unfortunately out here there are no places where I could go to listen to mics of this caliber so I am hoping for folks thoughts on this. Thanx for you help Hawker P.S. Hey folks remember to switch to using gathering@conf.welcomehome.org, not gathering@cygnus.com for all AGR posts. P.P.S. The 1998 Arizona Gathering CD MP3 music recordings can be found at ftp://ftp.xichron.com/xfer/Music_from_the_Campfires.html Info on obtaining this CD can be found by e-mailing me at Hawker@Connriver.net (Note CD on temporary hold till Mid March. As of 3/8/99 was 90% done re-mastering)
From: "Darren Murtha" <dmurtha@earthlink.net> Subject: Re: DATport questions Date: Tue, 18 May 1999 20:47:34 -0500 From: Thomas Narten <narten@cs.duke.edu> 1) Are folks having problems getting it to transfer data reliably from DAT to hardrive? As a comparison point, I'm thinking of the ZA2 where plenty of folks at times have had problems with random glitches in the received input stream. 2) Does the software/driver provide a good indication of when the transfer has succeeded glitch free? I.e., if you transfer data with no apparent errors, does that really mean there are no pops/glitches or does one in practice still need to listen to the transferred file to be sure? 3) Anyone have experience with this setup under NT? 4) For folks who have used it for a while, what are the main negatives/disappointments? 1. It took me some time, but I have my SONICport working like a charm 2. Not really, the software you buy/pirate will indicate this, but the DATport software panel itself won't. After you are sure you get it working right, and when you know, all you have to do is make sure you have your sample rates set right. 3. I briefly tried to set it up on NT, but read that USB doesn't work under NT. I installed the service pack, and it didn't help, and I am impatient, so I installed 98. 4. Biggest pain is you have to reboot when switching sample rates. The manual blows, and so does Tech support. If you know about computers, you shouldn't have problems tho. The main reason I like it is it doesn't take a PCI slot and I didn't have to dick with IRQ's. I am working on a miniFAQ for the DATport/SONICport, more on that later.
