From: pkmin@rsc.rockwell.com Subject: Re:Mis -load Date: Fri, 21 May 1999 16:30:25 -0700 (the typical D7/8 misload/tape snaggage upon eject/blank tape syndrome) " At the end of the show I rewound to the beginning. When I got home hit eject and come to find out the tape is pulled out of the case. I replaced the tape back in the cartridge and the played the tape with no recording in sight at all. So I guess the Question is: Is this tape shot now, can the music ever be recovered. What can I do to prevent this mistake again? Thanks Bill" The following may or may not work, but it can't really hurt if you want to take every precaution possible. If you are the owner of a D7/8(especially an older one which seem to have this problem more frequently), do not eject the tape after the show. Instead leave it in and clone it(all the time keeping the deck powered) Then make sure the clone turns out. Once you know you have a backup, then eject the master. If it comes out snagged and "blank", it won't matter since you have a backup. I have a suspicion (so take the following with a grain of salt)that the times a tape misloads in a D7/8 or those times when it doesn't come out snagged, and the music is fine for a while but then slowly drifts into dropping out/blank mode, is encouraged when the door isn't shut solidly/quckly enough(ie not closing it quickly/solidly increases the probability for this to occur). A few weeks ago I was running late at a show (like usual)had my D8/SBM in my fanny pack and was hurrying to get everything going. I wasn't satisfied with how I closed my D8 (I like to quickly slam it closed(you give the door a quick push from the fully open position and it ends up "slamming" itself closed in a single quick motion), this time was a real slow closing(since I had a bunch of stuff crammed in a small fanny pack which made it difficult to slam closed)- pushing slowly until you hear the "click"), but they were starting so I left it (and the whole show was thinking this tape isn't gonna turn out bc I didn't slam the door shut). My suspicions were right - the tape plays fine for a while then starts dropping out more and more until finally its nothing but "blank" after about 40 minutes....Pete (can you say "crappy loading mechanism")
From: Ryan Ellingson <rellings@earthlink.net> Subject: Digital i/o Soundcards Date: Fri, 21 May 1999 16:48:39 -0700 Hey Guys, A couple of days ago, I claimed to have Word Document with comments about Digital Soundcards on it and took requests to mail it to people. I got many requests so I put some time into it to make it look nice and read well. If you want a copy, or requested one but did not receive one, please let me know and I will send it out. I still would like more information about Digital in and out soundcards. Any comments about them would be great. If anybody would like to share a few must do's and must dont's about buying a digital i/o soundcard, I sure would appreciate it. Has anybody used the Ego Sys/Klay Anderson card yet, any comments? Take it easy Ryan

From: Edward B McGrath <sac19854@saclink.csus.edu> Subject: British tapers heads-up!!!!!! Date: Fri, 21 May 1999 17:20:17 -0700 (PDT) PLEASE! PLEASE! Somebody tape this and get in touch with me. Especially the Pavement. I just got this from the Matador News list so hopefully someone can catch it. thanks- Barin Attention, British! CORNELIUS, MOGWAI, and PAVEMENT recorded live at the recent Bowlie weekender and will be aired on Steve Lamacq's show on BBC Radio 1 this Monday, May 24th from 8pm - 12am GMT. You can expect to hear Cornelius' set around 9pm. Or if you live in the States, you can expect to hear none of this.

From: Rick Shaich <Rick.S@XiChron.com> Subject: RE: A?D converters Date: Fri, 21 May 1999 22:18:46 -0400 Well that's a long question but here is a start. There are two types of AD converters R2R and Delta Sigma.. There are other types, but they are all basically variations of those two. R2R tend to be older.. or more audiophile market.. they require more outboard parts to make them work. They are based on laser trimmed resistors.. The quality of the ADC is based on quality of the conversion process. They tend to be more linear but higher distortion do to trimming errors. Analog Devices used to be king of the R2R ADC.. lately most of them are coming from Burr Brown. Since there are not to many R2R ADCs floating around anymore I won't discuss them right now. Delta sigma ADCs are the newer ADCs. The big difference here is over sample number. Early ADCs are 4x... the latest are 128x with every 2^x in between. Oversampling modulation pushes the frequency of modulation over the nyquest frequency.. for example (assuming 44.1Khz sample) a 8x modulates at 8xFS (352.8Khz) a 128FS is 5.6448. What this does is push the noise out of the audio band. the higher the oversampling number the further out of band the noise and distortion components are. Further refinements come from dual bit ADC (two ADCs running in push - pull) for lower noise.. The latest ADCs like the AKM 5392/5393 and Crystal 5396 use Noise shaping technology. Early ADCs were known to display Birdies and Idle tones, by using noise shaping and high oversampling rates these Birdies and Idle tones have been mostly eliminated creating a "white" noise floor which is more desirable. Further refinements are made by more accurate references and lower noise references in the ADC. Noise on the Reference can show up on the output. Some folks like Crystal have made separate dies in the ADC for left, Right and Digital sections. While this improves cross-talk and noise a bit it makes the ADC much more expensive. Folks like AKM are using a smaller micron process for more space and a single wafer for lower cost. Also AKM ADCs are single ended requiring an external reference, but only one power rail. Crystal is bi-polar supplied which eliminates the need for an external reference, but requires a negative rail.. this makes the Crystal ADC easier to design with in the AC studio world but harder for battery powered situations where the negative rail either takes a second battery or a switching power supply (which can be noisy). Lastly some ADCs have balanced inputs, while some are single ended. A single ended input will transfer all noise throughout. A balanced input assumes that any noise is "common mode" and will cancel out on the differential front end. Hope this gets you started.. Try reading some Data sheets from AKM, Crystal, Burr Brown and Analog Devices for more info.. perhaps start with AKM as they pretty much own the market these days. Hawker P.S. Just finished a design with the AKM5392... got boards back a week ago... can't wait to hear how it sounds!! The DAC (4392) was VERY impressive. Also while we are at it... does anyone reading this have a data-sheet for the Tascam ADC (the AKM 5340). Since that is a Japanese AKM product I can't get the datasheet from AKM USA. (The Jap/USA issue is another long story) I could really use this data sheet! >I am trying to learn more on the conversion process. What makes some >coverters better than others? For example, what makes the DA-P1's or >HHb's A/D better than the D7/8? Hmm, perhaps someone thinks it is the >other way around??? What is it about the external converters, e.g. >ADC-20 or A/D-1000. that make them superior to internal? >What deck(s) on the market have the best converters? > >Thank you, > >Eric ************************************************ Rick Shaich KD4TPB CET Rick.S@XiChron.com Hawker@Connriver.net WWW.XiChron.Com (802) 291-6131 voice (802) 291-6132 Fax (910) 251-9140 Home Office Voice & Fax ************************************************

Date: Sat, 22 May 1999 00:46:59 +0300 Hey all, I caught the last 15 or so seconds of Bruce and Branford Marsalis doing the national anthem for the opening of an nba game.. I was just curious to see if anyone might have taped it?? I'm not really extremely interested, i just it would be nice to have... even on an analog tape or something... thanks for the space! -_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_ Osman Balkan Obalkan@borg.com -_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_-_ "We are all driven by an invisible whip.
