As there seem to be a confusion as to which batteries are the best,
here are the currently (990401) best cells available for DAT use:
Size AA (R6): NiCD: 1100mA Sanyo KR-1100AAU
NiMH: 1600mA Toshiba TH-1600AAH
Size D (R20): NiCD: 5700mA Energizer EC-5700D
NiMH: 7000mA Energizer (Available August/September-99)
(Observe: The Toshiba battery is a foamed cell type, for sintered
cells, use energizer 1200mA NiMH, if the Sanyo product is
not available. Sintered cells are used for fast-charge.)
Primary: Size AA: Li/FeS2 Energizer L91 (AA 1.5V replacement)
An excellent product, well worth trying out!

The precursor to the D-5 cassette unit. Similar to some of the larger
Marantz protable field decks. Runs on 4 D-Cells, Mic in, Line in and out. I
have been unable to find a replacement motor. All else ok. I didn't put
much mileage on it, previous owner was the local school system. 1st $75
takes it. e-mail privately. Thanks! Carl

I am going to try to discuss the external converters to some extent.
This is by no means an exhaustive treatment, but it is an attempt to
expose the issues. I am by no means an expert on this subject, but I
will offer what I have learned thus far. What makes an external
converter perhaps better than an internal one? Part of it is the analog
front-end and part of it is the digital components. Then also you have
options like 16/20/24-bit word sizes, and dither. The addage "you get
what you pay for" certainly holds true for digital systems also.
On the analog side, some analog circuits are better than others. This is
very evident in the electronics industry. Studios will spend thousands
of dollars on a Class-A preamp when they can use the excellent circuits
in their studio console. There is a difference. Regarding converters,
the Symetrix 620 manual says about theirs, "the extra attention to
detail taken in the design of the 620 is typified by features such as
the direct coupled signal path. There are no capacitors in the 620's
analog signal path." So analog design is a important part of a good
converter. Generally, superior designs require more engineering and
testing, and manufacturers recoup this cost as a part of the price.
Let's talk about the digital side. As I recall, Apogee makes statements
about "stable clock" sources in their converters. A stable clock source
is vital to minimize jitter. According to Ken C. Pohlmann's book,
regarding the sample/hold circuit which is a fundamental component of
any A/D converter, "Variations in absolute timing, called jitter, create
modulation noise". Principles of Digital Audio, 2nd Ed. (p.84). Apogee
makes the selling point that they search for stable clock sources (ie.
on a crystal by crystal basis???) to find stable clocks to use in their
converters.
Electronics aside, you also get extra features in a good converter.
Choices in output word size are one. Soft-limiting (analog) might be
another. And, there are choices in dither (what a converter does to
quantize those least significant bits at lower levels.) Apogee has a
proprietary process they call UV22 which encodes a 20-bit converted word
down to 16-bits and adds dither. Sony has Super-Bit Mapping (SBM) which
is their proprietary noise-shaping method which attempts to conceal
noise. All DAT recorders and most standalone A>D converters have dither
(either as fixed or optional), but there are exceptions to that rule
like the MidiMan Flying Cow. Anyway, arguably, some dithering methods
are better than others.
That's the external converter side of your questions. Perhaps someone
else will respond on the D7/DAP1/HHB question or the decks with the best
converters. Someone with a lot of experience with different machines
will have to deal with that. I hope you get a response. I have been
thinking that a Panasonic SV-3800 might be my next machine.

while surfing some web sites today, i came across 3 very interesting =
decks that were new to me. they were the sony pcm-r700, pcm-7040, and a =

home units and the fostex is clearly a portable.
my question is, and cost is not the most important factor here, should i =
try to use either of the sonys as my other home deck, and will it have =
compatibility problems with my flawlessly-working da-30mk2? i am =
assuming that scms will not be involved here. they both look and appear =

also, is the fostex in competition with the hhb? it is beefy and the =

Subject: Tascam DA-20 odd behavior
Date: Sat, 22 May 1999 23:23:16 -0400
My DA-20 has developed an annoying and odd problem, I am wondering if anyone
else has seen this before, with a DA-20 or any other deck. Here's what's
happening:
When I record on 90m tapes, just recently, I've noticed a low, but steady
stream of errors on the right channel when I play back the tape. Now, I
understand that 90m tapes are not recommended for use with the DA-20, but I
have not been having any difficulty until recently, and the problem is
strangely consistent, IOW it _always_ does the same exact thing with no
variance whatsoever: the error count on the right side flickers at 06 and 13
steadily throughout playback. If it was just general flakiness, I'd expect
to see maybe higher rates of errors every so often, or some error activity
on the left channel, but this never happens.
Now, here's what's really throwing me: If I have my D8 and DA-20 connected
(or my ZA2 and DA-20) and I record blank space on the tape in the DA-20,
there are ZERO errors on playback. The errors only appear once there is a
signal coming from the playback device. Its like clockwork, as soon as
there's sound coming from the playback device, the error count begins to
flicker.
This would seem to indicate that its not a head-related problem, but I don't
experience this at all with 60m tapes. Recording with 60m tapes has been
flawless.
The problem occurs with every brand of 90m tape I've tried (KAO, Sony DGP,
Ampex, Maxell DDS), and dry cleaning the heads did not make any difference
at all.
Any ideas? Is it a slight head misalignment that for some reason only
manifests itself with 90m tapes? Has _anyone_ seen this pattern before?
TIA
Paul
