From: SAlpert5@aol.com Subject: Sale on "Consumer" CD-r blanks Date: Mon, 24 May 1999 00:48:24 EDT I happened to notice that this week (5/23/99-5/30/99), the "BEST BUY" chain is offering a 3-pack of Maxell "audio" CDR-74 discs for $9.99. For those of you with "consumer" model CD recorders, that only use the tax-paid "consumer audio" discs, this may be a good price. But of course it doesn't touch the "free after rebate" typical prices of the computer CD-r's....
From: "Chris M. Hickman" <gomer67@xoommail.com> Subject: Is this good gear? Date: Sun, 23 May 1999 23:13:48 -0700 Hello, I'm new to the world of DAT and had a question on equipment. I've read the DAT-H FAQ and price/specs shopped, and this is what I came up with for a stealth recording rig: sony PCM-M1 coresounds High-End Binaurals I will be recording loud rock acts in rooms ranging from small banquet rooms that hold anywhere from 100-500 to a big theater that holds 2200 including balcony, with an occasional trip to places like the Peoria Civic Center (12,000, 4 levels), the Kiel Center (St. Louis), Braden Auditorium (Normal) or Aragon Ballroom, Rosemont Horizon (Chicago). Also will be taping close-range outdoor shows, similar to the 100-500 banquet hall shows. If this is too trivial to reply to the digest about, feel free to email me, any advice would be appreciated. Thanks. ************************* *****Chris aka GOMER***** *************************

But never before have I seen one perfect channel and the other not. I'm guessing it could be a firmware bug which causes the de-interleave to fail under certain conditions. From: Coopers <cooper@lightlink.com> Subject: FS: dat tape storage Date: Sun, 23 May 1999 21:22:46 -0400 hi all, I have 12 dat tape storage wall racks similar to the "datrax" product that hold 50 dats each. 4 are made of pine and the rest are reclaimed philippene mahogany. All are finished in clear poly. These are my own design and manufacture. My day job keeps me too busy to devote time to producing them any longer. I am asking $25 ea. for the pine and $30 ea. for the mahogany. These prices do not include shipping. (averages $8-12 ups ground depending on quantity and distance. You pay only actual ship cost.) I also have a oak cabinet that holds 400 dats. It has 4 drawers, 100 dats each. full extension, heavy duty ball bearing drawer guides handle the weight of the tapes with ease. this is also my own design and manufacture. finished in clear poly, it is a peice of fine furnature. I am asking $350 plus shipping.(It is heavy, 35+ lbs. you pay actual ups cost) photo available on request. I intended to produce these on a "by order" basis, but again the day job keeps me busy enough. Plus, i have a card catalog for all my cassettes & dats so it has been empty for about 3 years. Thanks for the bw, thom

The Bogen is 17' and the Manfrotto only 13'..... Don't fixate on length <g>. You can only get two out of the three variables - portability/sturdiness/height - and in my view sturdiness should be your main priority. A flimsy vibration-prone rig is next to useless. I am pleased with a 4 section Manfrotto "Master stand" (art.no. 004; max ht 3.85 m = 12.6 ft; min ht 1.09 m; wt 2.15 kg). Even then I prefer to add weights to the legs. For more height or maneuverability, I add a counterweighted light boom (art no 024; 3 sections; 2 m max). Manfrotto carry a large range of well-built adaptors, C- and swivel-clamps etc. I don't know the US Bogen stuff...had half surmised that Manfrotto, Italy was OEM'ing for them? -- Tom
From: Hawker <Hawker@Connriver.net> Subject: RE: Mic stand/ recording questions. Date: Mon, 24 May 1999 10:20:02 -0400 Manfrotto and Bogen are the same thing/company.. They were called Bogen in the US and Manfrotto in Europe.. now they just call themselves Manfrotto. There more than 50 stands in there line and they are all different. Basically they have a lightweight line (ala the famous 3374 etc) and a heaver, sturdier line.. If you goto your local camera shop ask for a Manfrotto catalog and it will spell them all out. You also need two adaptors to make these work with regular microphone holders. Lastly about this time last year we had EXTENSIVE discussion on the differences between the stands.. I suggest scanning the archives. I also posted a chart with all the light-weight stands by model number with all the relevant info and price. I don't have time to dig it up right now.. but you should be able to enter BOGEN and find it easily.. if not write me back and I will dig it up. Hawker >Ok guys, lemme know your opinions of the following: >Bogen or Manfrotto? The Bogen is 17' and the Manfrotto only 13', but the >Manfrotto is "air cushioned", whatever that means. Only $10 in price >difference.
From: "Rob Bertrando" <rbbert@earthlink.net> Subject: HHb 90 meter tape Date: Mon, 24 May 1999 08:11:48 -0700 Hate to bring this up again, but HHb sells a 90 meter "DDS" tape for use in its "pro" DAT decks. Also, a quote from their booklet "A Guide To Choosing and Using Digital Audio Recording Media"..."The only advantage of using DDS tapes in a DAT recorder is that a DDS90 tape will allow 180 minutes of audio recording. However, DDS tapes are much thinner and not so reliable when spooling and playing at high speeds."
From: Ernie Voegtlin <crpediem@ix.netcom.com> Subject: Maxell HS/4 Series Observation Date: Mon, 24 May 1999 11:42:38 -0400 Hey y'all. I've noticed in all recent batches of Maxell HS/4 Series (both the 60 & 90m) I've encountered that there is a fine white particle dust lightly spread over the cartridge. I was curious if anyone else had come across this & what their thoughts may be on potential causes or damage factors. I have stopped using them myself, preferring to err on the side of caution. The ones I receive in trade, I religiously wipe down before each use(as it does seem to re-accumulate somewhat). My obvious concern is that this "dust" is not only on the outer shell, but finding its way inside to potentially affect the tape as well. Am I just too paranoid for my own good or do you feel this to be a legitmate cause for worry? I welcome any input either privately or via a reply posting & thank you for the bandwidth. Ernie V
