Hello All!
I have a a tape with slight audible clipping. I know that this means I have
lost some data which is more or less inrecoverable but is there software that
can do some tricks to lessen the audible effects?
Please let me know!

I used to be at crazy_diamond@webtv.net. I rarely check that e-mail any
more. So, if you want to get a hold of me please e-mail me at
niceguy1222@earthlink.net Also, I am behind on some trades right now.
My last month of school has taken a greater toll on me than I ever
thought it would. I finish in two days and assure anyone I owe tapes to
that they will be sent no later that next Monday. Thanks for your
patience. Sorry for the lack of DAT content.

Len doesn't really answer the question, and even if he did, you might
suspect that he painted too rosy a picture since he sells mics for
the purpose.
I've done binaural recordings with his battery box binaurals, and for
my purposes (acoustic environments/non-electrified music) the
results (with the exception of self noise) was as good as any I've
heard.
>From a 3-D localization standpoint, recording just outside the
ears makes more sense than recording in the ear canal, unless
you replay the recording in the ear canal _without any equalization
applied_. And of course, the recording should preferably be made in
your own ear. In reality, this scenario never occurs. Recording
inside an ear canal, real or artificial, is a dead end IMHO and is a
remnant from the research context. For sonic reproduction, recording
outside the ears gives better results, both from a theoretical and
from a practical standpoint as far as my experience goes.
Len's battery box binaurals do a good job at this.
I can't comment on their high SPL performance as I didn't use them
for those purposes, but the only real limitation I found was self
noise. If you want to record quiet music, such as solo guitar, or if
you want to make ambience recordings this could be important
to you.
(Obligatory name dropping: I once almost bought a dummy head
setup from Ken Kantor. I didn't want to ask how much he wanted
for it, because I would have felt obliged to buy it. I have regretted
that sorely, because it would have been great fun to fool around
with freely, and it would have made a great conversation piece
at home! I was in a very tight spot economically though. Still, the
home decoration aspect shouldn't be neglected even if the dummy
heads don't make much sense from a recording standpoint. )
I passed Len's mics on to someone who needed them better,
and he has improved his product in various ways since then.
They fit the bill for a sub $500 binaural setup. Be your own dummy
head. :-)
Binaural recording is a great way to capture the atmosphere of
a performance. The best way, possibly. If you want to record the
_music_ however.... :-) But binaural is fun, and a great way to
learn about the limitations of stereo, and about how our localization
works.
Enjoy!

Ok, so I had Sony send my deck back without making any repairs since
they weren't going to charge me the flat rate. It arrived on Friday,
and so I took it home and threw in a tape, just to listen to something,
and expected the same old problems I had before (DN, DO, etc.). To my
astonishment, it worked flawlessly!! Naturally, I assumed it was dumb
luck, so I decided to test out tapes that were particularly bad before,
and they played perfectly too! Next, I tested out a tape that I had
recorded just before I sent the deck in for new heads, which I figured
was worthless, and it was perfect too! The only thing different is that
the tapes I had recorded were the only ones to give me the
"blankety-blank" problem while FF.
What's going on here? They didn't charge me for any repairs, but is it
at all possible that, for some reason or another, they actually replaced
the heads? Is there any way that I can tell by looking at them? When I
sent it in, I specifically said that I wanted the heads replaced no
matter what, and I wanted an estimate on the cost of the display. Is it
possible that some service guy opened it up, changed the heads out of
necessity before/while generating the estimate, and since they're not
going to dig through the trash to put the old heads back in, just left
them there when I refused the estimate?? I'd really like to know, since
it means either a new deck or not.

Keep them coming. They are always short and to the point and definitely add
value. I'm surprised they got so riled up at you. It's probably frustration
that has built up from trying to keep a tree alive that had a noble goal,
but many participants who realized it was TOO much once the tapes started
flowing (I was lucky enough that all of my kids bailed so I could TOO).

For the 1st time ever, since PHISH Ticket's By Mail was started for Summer
Tour 95', I have been shut out. I have mailed ordered religiously for shows
on every tour since 95' & have always followed the instructions to the T
with the US Postal Service Post Mark always being the 1st date of mail
order, but this summers tour, my luck ran out. As the subject say's, I am
looking for tapers tickets for the following shows. I run either a set of
Gefell SMS M200's or M210's > Oade M248b or Schoeps CMC6 > VMS 021B into a
HHb PDR 1000 (modified), so a quality recording is pretty much guaranteed
and a digital or analog patch will be there for you. I appreciate the
considerations. If you have an extra(s) tapers for one or all of these
shows, please email me @ john@datrack.com to work out the details. Thanks
for the consideration.

Delano <bluesky@mindspring.com> wrote on Mon, 24 May 1999:
>>Just rec'd a SBM1 today. A few questions for any SX-M2 -> SBM1
users... 1) What do you use to patch the SX-M2 into the SBM1? What provides the
best sound? (i.e. some XLR -> coax, mini -> coax, mini -> mini, etc?)<<<
When I ran this same gear I used simple 1/2 meter monster 400 xlr->rca
interconnects. They worked just fine. I have always religiously avoided using
mini connectors for anything as I find the connection to be *way* too shaky for
field recording. You have the rca ins on the sbm...USE em!!!
>>>2) When using the Sonosax to amplify the sound, what volume setting do you
use on the SBM1 (and D8 - I would assume around 4 or 5 for the D8)<<<
All depends on the volume of the music you are recording and how hot your mics
are. As a general rule for rock shows using the u89s or the 64's, I would start
with the sonosax on low gain setting with the knobs at around 1 o'clock, and the
sbm1 dual knobs set around 6. From there, I would use the sonosax controls to
adjust left and right channels to make em as even as possible, and the sbm1
controls (which turn together) to raise or lower the overall levels once you
have left and right even. The setting on your D8 won't matter as you will be
feeding it digitally from the sbm1, i.e., the deck will slave to the levels you
set on the adc.
>>>3) I am thinking of finding some 90 degree attachments for my mic's XLR
cables and then possible a 90 degree attachment for the SBM1 and D8 also, do
these add noise).<<<
They shouldn't if they're done properly, but I never found such "attachments" to
be necessary.
