From: "Vernon A Webb" <Vernon.Webb@webb-solutions.com> Subject: CDR Info Date: Tue, 25 May 1999 23:00:52 -0400 Just purchased a CD-R and am looking for the best way to record from DAT. How is everyone else doing it? Is there a special soundcard people are using or are we still in the analog input stage? Is there any special software people use. My CD-R came with Adaptec's Easy CD Creator, is this sufficient? Thanks, Vern

From: Aaron Westendorf <westea@rpi.edu> Subject: $620 Fostex D5 Date: Wed, 26 May 1999 00:11:21 -0400 I've been meaning to post this, and keep forgetting. B&H Photo Video down in NYC (www.bhphotovideo.com) has the D5 for sale now at $620! Even more surprising, they list the usual retail at $650. If you're in the market for a deck, I've heard great things about the D5, and this price certainly can't be beat. No affiliation, blah blah blah, just like the price, and it's a pretty cool store (and it's 420 Ninth Ave no less =). -Aaron -- ==================================================== Aaron J. From: "Patrick Hayes" <pat@patrickhayes.com> Subject: Re: CD-R Date: Tue, 25 May 1999 23:09:37 -0600 For my new computer I spent a little extra to get a Soundblaster Live! sound card, which does the usual sound card stuff (in/out, joystick, etc.), but also includes MIDI, plus SPDIF (RCA cable) digital I/O. Assuming your DAT has SPDIF (they look like ordinary RCA connectors, except probably orange instead of red and white), this would probably work just fine. I haven't gotten around to burning anything this way, but your Adaptec software should work. Most burners come with that same software. From: "Gary Smith" <flatpick@interlync.com> Subject: Remote power supply for the DAP1 Reply-to: flatpick@interlync.com Date: Wed, 26 May 1999 00:29:52 -0500 Hi, I use phantom power from my DA-P1 to power 2 Neumann TLM103's. The internal battery lasts no more than 1 1/2 hours at best when I use phantom, about 2 hrs without. (I have a spare & it holds up with the same time frame). I'd made a battery out of two 4V 10Ah nicads in series but for some reason, they don't seem to last much longer (a little over 2 hours) than the standard Tascam batteries. I need something portable that I can put in a knapsack with the DAP1 that will last for 6-10 hours at a time without a recharge. I was wondering how well the RayoVac Renewal D size alkaline batteries hold up? I could use 10 of them in a series parallel & I do have use of the microprocessor controlled RayoVac special recharger for them. Anyone have a good affordable suggestion? the stock DAP1 batteries are 7.2V at 1.4Ah. Answers direct to me or on list are really appreciated. Gary Smith

From: Seth Breidbart <sethb@panix.com> Subject: Re: Remote power supply for the DAP1 Date: Wed, 26 May 1999 01:52:28 -0400 (EDT) I use Radio Shack 7.2v batteries for the DA-P1 (via the external power jack). 1. Cut the power supply wire, and install mini-xlr connectors on both ends. 2. Make a cable with mini-xlr on one end, Radio Shack locking molex on the other. 3. Wire the batteries with RS locking molex connectors. 4. Make a cable with locking molex on one end, 2 locking molex (in parallel) on the other. This allows switching batteries in a make-before-break (that is, no-dropout) way. (I'm leaving out a lot of info about connector gender, etc. because I'm too lazy to go check. It should all appear in back issues of the digest.) Another possibility is 6 high-capacity D-cell nicads in series. (The advantage of this is that in the absence of time or ability to charge them, you can use 5 alkaline D-cells and short the holder for the sixth.) (Be careful which D-cell nicads you get; some are just C-cells in a larger box. RS's high-capacity are real.) Seth

I have some info about video switchers which use 75ohm circuitry which would pass the SPDIF along and let me switch back and forth from different inputs. Any help would be appreciated. Looking to spend up to ~$200 if the value is there. *begin grovel* To any one out there that has Tapers Tix for Phish 7/10, 7/15, or 7/16 I am in search of TT and can offer my highly coveted lawn tix, cash, clones, patch whatever for trade. From: Robert Kane <rkane@mich.com> Subject: Re: DAT-Heads Digest #975 Date: Wed, 26 May 1999 09:49:00 -0400 (EDT) I picked up the Guillemot Maxi Studio Isis, it has an outboard box with 8 in/4 out analog jacks, and optical In/Out and SPDF In/Out. I have the Sony optical I/O cord for my D7, I plug it into the optical ports and use CoolEdit SE that came with the Maxi Sudio ISIS to record to wav files. Once the songs are copied onto my PC as wav files, I use Adactec EZ CD Creator to burn the disc. Works great. From: "Read, John" <John.Read@infores.com> Subject: re: questions re tascam da 30mkII Date: Wed, 26 May 1999 09:12:09 -0500 I picked up a DA-30MKII used from a professional studio who upgraded their system to 24bit. They said they would never have given it up unless they needed to upgrade. It is(was) the standard for mastering DATs for transferring to CD. In my humble use of it, I find that it sounds 'quieter' and cleaner than any other deck I've used such as the Fostex D-5, especially when using the analog outputs. I especially like and get a lot of use out of the shuttle wheel for fast queing.. This machine has a lot of pro features and is sure to have what you need for 16bit taping. This machine does not handle 90m tapes. It won't play them unless you fool it by covering the little hole in the bottom of the tape. (compare a 60m to a 90m tape and you will see the different holes) Other people on Dat-heads may know exactly what happens to the deck but the manual states that the tape is too thin on a 90m and may get crimped or broken if played. I have played a few 90m tapes on my deck and they have played just fine when I cover the hole. I do notice that the rewind and fast forward sound as if the tape is winding a lot faster than a 60m. I have heard that the 90m can damage the rollers in the deck but I'm not sure so I am avoiding using 90m. I haven't yet figured out all the features of the start ID's, auto-ids, abs, etc. The manual isn't very helpful on this. It seems straightforward but when I try to set and ID, it doesn't work. I think this is my own problem though. The features seem to be the same to other decks I've used. What price are you getting for it?? I sometimes hear @700-800 is a decent price. I got mine for a "friend's" price of $600 but some people on this list told me I should've got it for less. Who knows? happy taping, -jr chicago ========================= in reply to ===================== From: dwb <dwb@ameritech.net> Subject: questions re tascam da 30mkII Date: Tue, 25 May 1999 10:50:30 -0400 looking for some user feedback on the da 30mkII, which i can get a good deal on. i understand there's a serious 90m tape issue. how have people resolved this? who's liking or disliking their machine and why? dwb
