We're using an Opcode DATport. For around $150 (at Sam Ash:
1-800-4SAMASH), it's likely the simplest and most reliable way to
transfer S/PDIF digital audio into your computer.
To go from your Sony portable DAT to the DATport, you might use one of
our 7-Pin-to-Coax cables. For details, please see our Web page or send email.

You'll find many enthusiastic User Comments on our Web site from folks
who use our Core Sound Binaural mics for recording loud electric music.
Those mics are specifically designed to have very low distortion at very
high sound pressure levels, and to avoid mic pre-amp overload problems.
They have a very flat frequency response and so have no inherent bias to
emphasize bass. So they're great for recording electric music.
No single mic is optimum under all circumstances. If you're hearing too
much bass it's a usage problem rather than a problem with the mic
itself. The Binaurals are omnidirectional mics and therefore are
subject to the usual acoustic effects that tend to emphasize bass
frequencies. These include hall effects (large halls often have an
inherent bass resonance), distance effects (high frequencies attenuate
quickly with distance while bass frequencies don't; low frequencies
bounce off the rear walls and are picked up again by the omni mics),
boundary surface emphasis (if the mics are positioned near a wall or
floor, they'll emphasize bass frequencies) and PA sound system EQ
imbalance. Under those conditions, a bass roll-off filter (such as we
offer) can often solve the problem.
Hope this helps!

You might consider the Zefiro InBox. It has an excellent sounding,
quiet, discrete pre-amp plus two very good sounding A-to-Ds. For $299
it can't be beat.

I've got a D7 that I'm thinking of selling now that I have a CDR. It's
3 years old, been cleaned and repaired a year ago with probably average
mileage on it. Any suggestions on what it should go for? $400? $350?
If you're interested, make me an offer.
Please respond privately and not to the list.

Mike-
I have 2 D8s, and one of them starting doing this around last August or so.
I don't know if its related or not, but around mid-April the latch on the
door stopped working and tapes could no longer even be loaded. I have a
feeling that the door was not locking properly all along, causing tapes to
be slightly misloaded and the deck to flash Blank whenever a tape was fast
forward or rewound. The repair was $70, and since then the deck is
performing normally again, no more flashing blank when trying to forward or
rewind tapes.

Subject: DAT racks
Date: Thu, 27 May 1999 20:37:06 +0000
A friend of mine got tired of hearing me bitch about my DAT storage problems.
Well he came by with a really nice rack that he had made that holds about
300 tapes. He gave it to me and wondered if I knew anyone else looking for
a rack. I told him that I'd ask around. The rack is nice. It has 5 rows
that hold around 60 tapes each (300 total) They are nicely sanded and
stained. It could be mounted on a wall really easily. I feel its really
worth it. I had bought a rack from a guy online (Dahfdia.com, or something
like that,I know some of you know the ones I'm talking about) that was nice
but this one is much nicer. Anyway, let me know if interested in one of
these. You can reply to me or directly to my friend. His name is Terry and
can be reached at:
terrygilland@mindspring.com
I now have some pix of the DAT racks. Get back to me if interested. He
now has 2 from which to choose. One is just sanded and stained (darker
finish) for $80 + shipping. The other is sanded, stained and varnished
(lighter glossy finish, much nicer in my opinion)) for $95 + shipping. They
are nice and definately worth the money in my opinion. Let me know at this
address if interested or you can reach Terry at: terrygilland@mindspring.com
He's the one that builds them.
Also, he is thinking about making analog racks if there's a demand. I'm
not sure of the price difference but let us know if interested. Thanks alot.
Steve.

My advice is to NEVER FF or RW. Do you have a home deck? If so do it all on
there. If not I recommend to stop unpacking your tapes. My D8 has been
heavily used for 90m tapes and I have had no problems and that's why.

Sorry 'bout the lack of dat-related content, but this concerns us all. It
really irks me to see blatant sales postings like the "Watch Your Sales
Incerase Overnight" posting in DAT-Heads #979. I can accept occasional
postings from companies advertising recording media/equipment, but these
shady-sounding sales pitches really irk me. This particular ad gave a
***TOLL-FREE # of 1-888-264-9272*** to call during 8-6 MST. I suggest
everyone who subscribes to DAT-Heads call this toll-free # whenever they
have a chance to voice their anger at this abuse of our newsgroup. If
enough of us participate, this will swamp these jerks with complaint
calls, preventing them from benefiting from their posting. I think
DAT-Heads Digest is a wonderful forum, and hate to see it misused. Thanx
for the bandwidth. -scott
