From: Tradedats@aol.com Subject: Weird CDR burning question (No DAT content) Date: Fri, 28 May 1999 00:42:57 EDT Hello Everyone, Sorry about the lack of DAT content, but I know a lot of you out there are familiar with CDR issues, so once again, I turn to DAT-heads for my digi-question. I used to own a Memorex 2x CDR burner on which I used TDK discs exclusively without a problem. I got a new burner, a Yamaha 4416 4x burner, and am experiencing strange problems playing back the CD. It burns fine, and plays fine in the computer. But when I put it on the CD player, it goes to 0:00 as if it were about to start, but then can't read. Though sometimes it plays the music, and sometimes it doesn't. Weirder still, if it doesn't start right up, if I change to Track 2, it may play (or it may not). The data is indeed burned onto the CD correctly, as it plays in the computer and can be extracted. I've since tried a Mitsui disc and it played fine. It is strange that on the Yamaha web site, they list TDKs as being one of the brands they recommend. Any thoughts on why this may be happening? I've done some research on the web but haven't found any FAQs that address this particular phenomenon. Thanks in advance for your help Mike

I think what you meant to ask was "How do I convert from PAL (english/european standard) to NTSC (yank... sorry.. american standard). Anyway, I used to live in America, and almost every town you go to will offer to do this dirt cheap. Alternatively, you can browse yahoo for NTSC Conversion or post to the alt.music.bootlegs newsgroup and pay a fortune on that. Check out your local electronics/video retailers specialising in that kind of equipment and you should get a good deal though.

It modifies the voltage from around 5V to 1V and adds 30ns of slew to the signal so that it can be run over a BNC cable and through a video switcher. Grahm Parsons makes these adapters.. one direction is a Model 21.. Hopefully >more will so they flood the market and drive down the price since I'm >going to probably buy one soon. Actually this is really wrong ... first off, the pre-amps in the Lunatec are WAY better than the ones in to AD1000, so getting rid of it is actually a downgrade in your system. Second the "big boys" may be after AD1000's in the DAT-Head world, but the price isn't going to go down since Apogee isn't interested in making any more. If anything it's going to go up since demand is up. But the real big boys (studio pros) are upgrading to things much better than the Apogee. Now as for some better coming out ... I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better pre-amp than the Lunatec...and as for finding a better ADC than the Apogee, rumor is a couple of companies are coming out with 24 bit versions. Midiman has the FlyingCalf that's a small portable ADC that's 24 bit and DC powered. Haven't used it, so I couldn't tell you if it's any good. scott === ========== |Scott Olsen (so16@prism.gatech.edu) |"You can't stop/Or I might pass ya/If you slow down| /I will out last ya" -BC | ---------- _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? From: daniel.estrin@chadbourne.com Subject: Apogee/V2/etc. Date: Fri, 28 May 1999 10:25:49 -0400 Howdy - >From: "Christopher and Anne Gillespie" <dizziness@interlync.com> >Didn't Tom Kingston provide the B&K4011>Lunatec V2>A/D-1000>HHB seeds last fall? I wonder why he is selling his V2... Could >there be something better??>?!?!?! I spoke with Tom in April and he told me that after a/b-ing his rig with the AD1000, and both with and without the lunatec, he decided that he really likes the preamps in the apogee, and that carrying the lunatec with the required 6v gel cell was overkill. btw, he also has an EAA psp3 (or maybe psp2?) that I think he intends to keep. fwiw, after a/b-ing a few shows, I similarly concluded that the mic pres in the AD1000 sound as good or better to my ear as those in the sonosax sx-m2, so I leave the sax at home except in situations where the apogee isn't practical to bring inside ;) YMMV. From: "Neil Corkindale" <neilc1@home.com> Subject: Re: LA Radio Date: Fri, 28 May 1999 07:53:28 -0700 I've just moved to Orange County (south of LA) and I'm wondering which radio stations carry any live concerts that might be worth recording, e.g. KBFH, etc. Can anyone in the area suggest any frequencies to tune into? Secondly, any comments about recording at the Coach House, Capistrano?? Security, acoustics, positioning, etc? I'm planning to tape Gong and Jimmie Vaughn next month. Thanks Neil

True but the fatal inherent weaknesses in a mic shouldn't be camouflaged with suger coated apologist soliloquys. >If you're hearing too >much bass it's a usage problem rather than a problem with the mic >itself. The Binaurals are omnidirectional mics and therefore are >subject to the usual acoustic effects that tend to emphasize bass >frequencies. These include hall effects (large halls often have an >inherent bass resonance), distance effects (high frequencies attenuate >quickly with distance while bass frequencies don't; low frequencies >bounce off the rear walls and are picked up again by the omni mics), >boundary surface emphasis (if the mics are positioned near a wall or >floor, they'll emphasize bass frequencies) and PA sound system EQ >imbalance. Under those conditions, a bass roll-off filter (such as we >offer) can often solve the problem. A better solution would be getting the modular binaurals w/ battery box from Sound Professionals (www.soundprofessionals.com) for over $100 less and better sound. For optimal bass cutting, I'd EQ the bass out AFTER rather than during the recording. An even better mic would be the OKM II R from www.soundman.de which goes for $200 US mail order. _______________________________________________________________ Get Free Email and Do More On The Web.
