From: Europe90@aol.com Subject: 05/29/99 Philly Ratdog Date: Sat, 29 May 1999 22:56:15 EDT Just came back from the Ratdog show at Penn's Landing in Philly. No taping equipment was allowed into the show. Those who where able to sneak it in or get it over the fence eventually got busted and escorted out of the show by Philly's finest...( the man in blue). So.. while I was envious of those who got their equipment in to the show I continued to do my stealth sonic studios recording standing immediately next to the sbd, dead ctr. about 75 away from the stage. the tape came out great. Any trade requests should me made to me privately. I am looking for Ratdog, Bruce Hornsby, Gov't Mule, and Little Feat ONLY. chris
From: Beast914@aol.com Subject: PAL/NTSC Date: Sat, 29 May 1999 23:00:37 EDT Alfredo asked: "I was wondering if in USA are sold NTSC deck that can play PAL" Of course there are!! This is America! You can buy anything!! The cheapest deck that I know to do this is Aiwa's unit. It only does PAL/NTSC conversions both ways and it does an OK (not great) job of converting. Its about $600.00 US. D

From: tsemans@hargray.com (Music Arcade) Subject: ISO Springsteen in Europe Date: Sun, 30 May 1999 00:02:14 -0400 I have been completely shut out of dats from this tour. Can *anyone* assist me? I have hundreds of hours of dats - some Bruce, lots of Dylan and Neil Young, plus many of other artists. I also plan to tape at the Meadowlands, so if there's a kind soul out there who could help me out, it would be much appreciated. How long, and what gauge? Try a listening comparison. (The answer is, probably not, if everything is within reason.) > (i know it does to an extent, > but what about thinner atenuator cables vs.monster cable with low levels to > prevent clipping??? If you need to set the level too low (exactly what number that is depends on the deck), you're better off with attenuator cables. > 2. when recordingin lp, 32 khz with 94m tapes, the time remaining display > shows about 1hr, 53min...shouldn't it be about 180 min, or 3hr??? Time remaining is seldom that accurate. Also, at LP, ATIME runs at half speed (increasing by 1 second every 2 seconds of clock time). Seth
From: randy@monkeybiz.Stanford.EDU Subject: Re: Etymotic headphones Date: Sat, 29 May 1999 23:40:49 -0700 (PDT) i've had a set for a few years now and in a normal (non-concert) setting the volume i can get on my d3 or m1 while out on the road is loud enough that i wouldn't bother with picking up a headroom amp just so i can blast away my eardrums.... ...and wearing over the ear hearing protection to cut out room noise when using them at a show seems a bit healthier than turning up the volume... -rand0m
From: GaoBest@aol.com Subject: gogos at maritime hall, july 7 '99 Date: Sun, 30 May 1999 03:01:42 EDT hey everyone is anyoen going to tape the GoGos show at Maritime Hall (San Francisco) on July 7? I am going but don't want to tape because I want to be near the front, because I've wanted to see the GoGos since 1983 but have never gotten around to it for reasons I can't fathom. so if someone else plans to go and tape, please email me to let me know, otherwise i'll have to deal with taping it... and i'm very bad at sneaking in extra blank DATs, i'm not sure if the "it's for work, it's a data cartridge" argument will work every time. anyway i would just appreciate it, and i may have something you'd like for trade... and if anyone plans to tape the LA and other US dates, please let me know, thanks very much! ciao mike
From: Scott Olsen <scott_olsen@yahoo.com> Subject: A fair comparison (was Apogee Envy) Reply-To: so16@prism.gatech.edu Date: Sun, 30 May 1999 01:21:51 -0700 (PDT) <--major header snippage --> >>Actually this is really wrong ... first off, the pre-amps in the >>Lunatec are WAY better than the ones in to AD1000, so getting rid of >>it is actually a downgrade in your system. >You wouldn't be saying that if you heard the results. ;-) > I have heard just about all of Tom's test tapes. The results are >conclusive. I liked the straight Apogee tapes much better. And I've >been a big proponent of the V2 in the past. However, I've changed my >tune a little bit. >Thanks, >Bill Gardner Ok, I re-read what I wrote and what all you you have been saying and I did realize something really stupid (mostly my part)....it's hard to compare tapes unless they are recording the same source (band), recorded exactly the same way, listened to on the same system, in the same room. The brand of tape might also play some small factor in this, I doubt it, but you would want the same brand of tape just to make sure. Now, I will grant you this, if you can't tell the difference on your system (or you even think the Apogee is better), then you're right ... don't get the V2. It's a waste of money for you. I also realize this will probably be a majority of the people out there. So see if you can listen to some comparisons before you buy. But I promise you if you listen to a perfect side by side comparison on some high end speakers you'll notice the difference. I got to do that in a hell of a control room equipped with some Wilson X1 Grand SLAMM's and the difference was obvious. I know of a person working in a high end shop who will help me run the test on a pair of German Physiks Borderland's soon and I'll tell you the result's of that if you care to know. But even using a pair of Mackie HR824's I could tell which tape was which, although the difference wasn't as dramatic. In fact it was almost slight. So it all just depends on what you are going to be doing with the tape and where you are listening to it. I would just encourage if the tape is going into production, please use a really good pre-amp, like the V2 or others. Better safe than sorry. BTW - if anyone is basing their info by listening to it on a set of Bose...then you don't count and should have all your DAT equipment taken away from you for having a Bose in the first place. >If ya'll like Apogee so much I suggest you get inside one of the newer >units and find out what it needs inside for DC. My guess is you could >use a 12V battery and a switcher to make the -12V firing it that way.. >It probably has 5V and 3.3V regulators inside to make the 12V 5V/3.3V >for the MPU/FPGA etc. Currently there is no portable Apogee products to do this. Who wants to help me lobby for a "Rosetta Jr." that will run DC and be about 1/3rd the size of a Rosetta? I'd be willing to part with a fair chunk of change for that. You know...get rid of some of the excess interfaces but keep the 96/24 converter and I'd be one happy camper. Oh yeah, while I'm out to dream up the perfect portable equipment, how about a portable 96/24 DAT under $5000. Neumann/DPA-type quality mics under $700 a piece. And I want a pony Santa...oops...got carried away there in my dreams. Now the insomniac sleeps, Scott _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
