Pthalocyanine is nearly clear so the reflective layer (silver or gold) will show through. I believe Ricoh Platinum, Mitsui Toatsu, and Taiyo Yuden use Advanced Pthalocyanine dye. Man, We're going to need a CD-Heads list soon.
From: al young <sugarcrafty@juno.com> Subject: S/PDIF help!! Date: Tue, 1 Jun 1999 16:18:30 -0700 hey folks, I just purchased a SEK'D Prodif 24 digital soundcard. The S/PDIF digital input is a 1/4" on the card. I currently use a RCA > RCA (75 ohm coaxial) cable to do my DAT clones. I want to use this cable to do my DAT > PC transfer so obviously I will need an RCA > 1/4" adapter. Two questions: a)Will I need to get a "stereo" or "mono" adapter? b)Are there quality differences in the adapter I get? The only place I seem to be able to locate one locally is at radio shack. I've tried Musicians Friend, Guitar Center and American Music and they don't seem to have such an adapter. I've been getting mixed answers as to whether I'd need a stereo or mono adapter. Please help!! thanks al ************************************************************** DAT List: http://members.xoom.com/Pakalolo_NW/ ************************************************************** ___________________________________________________________________ You don't need to buy Internet access to use free Internet e-mail. From: Jeff Bowen <jbowen@slonet.org> Subject: Little Feat board taping Date: Tue, 1 Jun 1999 17:14:35 -0700 (PDT) Greetings all, Snuck my DA-P1 into the Avila Beach Blues Festival and taped Little Feat through the board on Sunday. Sorry, no time for trades now. Just thought I'd relay some information for others taping the Feat this tour: Jerry Manuel is their sound man. Super nice guy. Plays a wicked air guitar too. ;) Currently they do Not have their patch bay running. I asked Jerry about it and he said the one they ordered was damaged in shipping so he sent it back. He is running his SV-255 off the board. There is another person with the band who is using a mini disc that is patched out of the SV-255. Luckily the venue soundman is a friend of mine and found me an unused set of 1/4 inch unballanced outputs so I was able to have my DA-P1 1st out. Thanks Bill! I don't know when the patch bay will be in use but for now anyone who wants to tape through the board has to go through the mini disc's output. They run two of them and do a quick 'hot swap' at 70 minutes. You will still have to sneak equipment in to the venue. They have been playing one long set. It has been 2:15 minutes but Sunday's show was less than 2 hrs including the encore. Jeff

I have had it for about 2 months now & it works great! Optic & RCA digital I/O's 4-1/4" out's & 8 1/4's analog in's. Comes with great software, and works well with Sound Forge,Cakewalk. I have used my DAT, Mini-Disc And burned several CD's from my Memorex CRW 1622. Also MP 3's straight from my computer to DAT !!!! Great bargain for under $300. I have waited along time to have a fully functional studio and Thanks to Alex's ...."DAT DAT World" home page he gave me allot of great research to compare. You can check out some live digital recording I have done with Mini-Disc converted to MP3's on my home page !! www.benroth-entertainment.com Douglas "Blazze" Benroth

From: pkmin@rsc.rockwell.com Subject: Re: "time aligned mix" - was: Matrix recordings Date: Tue, 1 Jun 1999 20:21:35 -0700 Thanks Stan - I found your recording experiences quite useful and informative. I have a comment in regards to A)mixing "foot of stage" mics with SBD or B)mixing mics 20-40 feet back with SBD. I switched from B to A a while back. Don't get me wrong, I still prefer to keep things simple and go for the straight AUD tapes (or straight on stage spread omnis). Adding the SBD into a live stereo recording makes you dependent on the soundman and his (or her in the case of zony mash the last time I saw them:-) settings, and a lot more equipment - theres more things to go wrong(or not necessarily go wrong but just not be/sound right). Not to mention you're now going through a mackie or whatever and not a lunatec....but anyways... "I don't see that the "foot of stage" technique offers any real advantages, other than not requiring a delay unit and overall convenience/fewer wires. I haven't done much of this particular type of recording though, as I prefer the results from the "SBD+" or time aligned methods. . . And I'd still rather listen to a good audience tape than a straight SBD. ;) Maybe I'll try it for the "xxxx xxxxxxx" (deleted to prevent groveling) show tonight, if the band will allow. I do have several acoustic music shows that I taped using a 4 ch SBD feed with a front of stage AT-822 stereo mic that did come out well, before I got my delay, so maybe there is something to this?" I'll assume that you are using cards, hypercards or some other directional mic from 20-40 feet back. An advantage of on stage mics is that ideally you're using omni's. Given the proper circumstances to use them, I feel omnidirectional mics offer the fullest, most natural and pleasing sound. On stage omnis mixed with SBD is one of those circumstances. Omnis spread on stage will give a much better soundstage and 3 dimensional imaging (hence the name omnidirectional)than from 20-40 feet back with directional mics mostly picking up the stacks will. You're closer to the direct sound sources themselves. Another nice thing about omnis spread on stage is that all you need is 2 mic clamps and possibly a small foldable photo tripod (which fits into a backpack). You can generally find places on stage (keyboard leg, stand, etc)which are out of the bands way (and still in a good location for your purposes), to clamp to. The small photo tripod comes in handy if you can only find one place to clamp to. One disadvantage is that depending on where you place them, you may not have as much "audience ambience" as you like. Another is that placement is more crucial with the onstage omni mics since you want to get a good balance to compliment the SBD (further back you're getting mostly an equal balance of everything so placement isn't as crucial).....Pete (personally I'd like to experiment with mixing just 4 or 6 mics (start out with 4 but then probably realize I need more)on stage but I don't own that many...unless you count the radio shacks which would probably choke at the high on stage SPLs...oh yeah I gave those to my bro:-)

Is this generally acceptable fidelity or is it better to get an audience recording. The applicatioin would be a live, musical theater, stage performance. Kind response appreciated. Only thing is, with a digital input you cannot choose the sampling frequency (the switch is useful only with analogue inputs). In the present case, the external analog/digital converter was sampling at 32 kHz, and your DA-30 could only use the sampling frequency of the signal it received via its AES/EBU input (it does not convert the sampling freq, which would be useless anyway since it would not improve the sound quality). >> I know it's a newbie thing, but if you could >> help me out I'd appreciate it. Thanks. What's wrong with newbie things ? Everyone has to learn, and this is a good place for it.. Hope this helps, Jean-Luc.

I think he emailed me stating that he successfully ran S/PDIF coax about 100 feet. If you go that distance use real 75-ohm coax cable and solder RCA's onto each end. FYI, I don't think you would have to worry about USB. We run 300ft serial cables (non USB) at work all the time. It's not uncommon. Low capacitance cable will allow you to go longer distances. But, if you're going room to room, I would think that a coax cable of the appropriate length will do it. Gordon
