my distrubutors at work. most places sell these for between $9-$12... I
am going to pass them along to people in the NG for what i paid for them
$6.50 (plus 75˘ per tape shipping)

Date: Wed, 02 Jun 1999 06:44:35 -0700
I am looking for a little figure-8 mic (or good way of
fashioning one). It should be quite small, low noise,
and generally decent quality. Oh, and not too
expensive. Suggestions?
You see...Starting with that AT-933-based Microline
mini shotgun from www.soundprofessionals.com, I have
fashioned a pretty good shockmount and windscreen for
it.
But that is only one channel going into my stereo M1,
and there is still some room in next to that first
mic...which gets me thinking it might be useful to
figure out how to squeeze a little (and inexpensive)
figure-8 mic in there so when the occasion is right I
can do that sorta-pseudo stereo which can mix up out of
such a pair of channels.
Thanks,
-kb, the Kent who discovered the M1 can keep a tape
inside but unloaded.

Hey Mark,
I have not tried the Radio-Shack rechargeable 9v batteries. I am sure
they will last just as long as the alkalines, but will wear out rather
quickly...you will get less and less out of each charge. I however make
a couple of rechargeable battery systems for the Beyer and the Sonosax
pre-amps. One lasts 8-10hrs for $160 delivered, and the other 18-20hrs
for $180. These systems will last you well over 3 yrs if you keep the
batteries charged, and the batteries are cheap to replace. No one else
makes these battery packs. Let me know and I can send you more info.
happy taping,

Dear Fellow DAT Heads;
About a week ago I sustained a severe system crash, to the point where I
had to reformat my hard drive. Of course, I lost all my files in the
reformatting.
I was a participant in a few trees & I'd appreciate some help in
reconnecting with those I owe tapes to. The trees were the GD 12/27/77
tree, the David Gans/Vince Welnick tree & the Phil & Phriends tree.
If there are any trading partners I owe tapes to, PLEASE CONTACT ME
IMMEDIATELY & we'll get things straightened out.
Thanks in advance for all the help.

Our 7-Pin-Coax-I/O cable will work fine for transferring data between
the newer Sony portable DAT recorders and the DATport.
Our 7-pin-Coax-I/O cable has the same usage rules as our two separate
cables: the 7-Pin-to-Coax cable for output and the Coax-to-7-Pin cable
for input.
We know that our 7-Pin-to-Coax cable works fine transferring data from
all Sony portable DAT machines to the Opcode DATport.
Our Coax-to-7-Pin cable works fine for transferring data from the Opcode
DATport to the PCM-M1 and TCD-D100. We don't know whether it works with
the older TCD-D7 and TCD-D8, because they require a higher signal
voltage level; by your report, it may not. We'll post updates to our
Web page as we learn more.
Hope that this helps!

Two solutions: for your -D7 you can use a Sony RK-DA10 cable to accept a
signal from the DATport, or you can add a Midiman CO2 (please see our
Web page for details) to the 7-Pin-Coax-I/O cable. Either way, cost
will be about the same but with the CO2 you won't have to re-cable your
D7 each time your switch between "record" and "play."
For the PCM-M1 or TCD-D100 you won't need either of these.
Feel free to ask questions.

The variable and fixed outputs are both analog. fixed supplies 2v
standard line-level output singal. variable output 0-2v, adjustable with
the remote control. (I had a DCD-1500 and a power amplifier for a year or
so, before purchasing a pre-amp with volume and tone controls, and used the
remote for volume adjustments) the sub-sode output was put there for CDs
that contained, or for future CDs that would contain, pictures or lyric
sheets which were not moving-picture quality. a new picture was supposed
to be available every 30 seconds or something. the subcode format never
took off in the marketplace. you would need a converter box to connect the
subcode out to your television set. there's no way I know of to get a digi
out of the DCD1500.
the manual says only "This output terminal will enable the more effective
use of the compact disc player in the future"
my DCD1500 has also worked flawlessly since March 1986 as the only CD player
I have ever owned (besides a boom box)

HI All,
Here's hoping everyone had a fun 3-day weekend and had the opportunity
to catch some great tunes. Here at Sonic Sense, we have kept the decks
rolling in order to catch up with tape trades and get our "Equipment
Comparison Page," http://www.henge.com/~sncsns/eqpcmptp.html and
"On Tour Page," http://www.henge.com/~sncsns/ontour.html back on track.
>From here forward we will have a featured Tape of the Month.
We will pick one of our favorite audience recordings each month and post
it
for everyone to enjoy.
This month we are starting with a double header:
String Cheese Incident--Mishawaka Amphitheater. Ft. Collins, CO 7/25/99
and
Grateful Dead Riverport Amphitheatre, St. Louis, MO 7/6/95
We will continue having all the shows that we record listed on the "On
Tour"
page along with liner notes indicating what equipment was used.
Additionally, we will continue making the Equipment Comparison Tapes
featuring the latest in popular microphones including the SCHOEPS
m222/4v
tube mics and Earthworks as well as pre-amps including the Lunatec V2,
Apogee, Sonosax and other top-quality equipment.
To keep these pages going successfully, we are looking for people who
are
interested in being listed on our site as a contact person. We will
provide
a complimentary copy of the show and only request that you promptly
trade as
you are contacted. Please see

Subject: CD-R quality at high speeds
Date: Wed, 2 Jun 1999 11:54:03 -0600
There has been some commentary lately on whether there is a
degradation when you burn CD's at faster speeds. The silver-on-silver
discs at http://st7.yahoo.com/cd-recordable-dot-com/8xdurhphigpe.html
specifically say they _shouldn't_ be burned at 1x, so, in this case, a
disc burned at 8x is better than a 1x disc.
The really cool thing they sell there is a PlayStation-style black
CD-R. They cost a lot, but I'm definitely going to get some for when
I send out demos of my group. Does anybody know if there are any
other cool colors available, beyond blue, gold, silver, and black?
Since black works, probably anything else is also fair game.
*Oh... one other question. Laser discs and DVD's have their clear
layers about half as thick as on a CD, to allow them to be
double-sided. Does anybody know if there's such a thing as a
double-sided CD? I'm not sure if players would be out of alignment on
it due to the thin clear layer. I ask not because I want to do
double-sided CD's, but because that would mean I could potentially
create albums of my group with standard CD on one side and DVD on the
other (with 2/5.1-channel AC-3 sound, videos, etc. on that side).
Then it would work in _any_ machine, and do a lot of extras. (with
the one deficit of having a _really_ small label on the disc)
-Pat
p.s. Yes, I do DATs too. Sorry about the non-DAT content!

In regards to mixing SBD w on stage omni's vs (hyper)cards from further back -
earlier I wrote:
(Another disadvantage) "is that placement is more crucial with the onstage omni
mics since you want to get a good balance to compliment the SBD (further back
you're getting mostly an equal balance of everything so placement isn't as
crucial)"
change "mostly" to "more of" (unless its a mono main mix, and even then you will
be getting some stereo effect from the stage itself)....the main point is that
variations of on stage omni placement have more of an effect on what mix of
sounds gets recorded through those mics than variations in placement from
further back. Slight variations in positioning of ORTFish cardioids from
further back aren't gonna have as much of an effect on what mix of sounds gets
picked up through those mics when compared to choice of on stage omni
placement....Pete

Your friend's advice is correct in many circumstances, but not all. Case in
point: 1X burning is generally considered not to be the best, because the
recording laser spends more time over any one area of the disc than at a
higher speed, potentially getting the dye _too_ hot. (This is why some
media, such as HHb and Apogee, is formulated to be recorded at 1X.) 2X and
4X are fine for almost every disc, but personally I record at 2X on my 4X
burner (a Teac 55S) when I have the extra time, just to be safe. At 4X, the
laser spends less time over any one area of the disc; I presume it's also
hotter than at 2X, but perhaps not sufficiently enough to get as good a
burn as it would at 2X. I should admit here that I haven't done any
objective testing as to whether this is really the case with my own burner;
this is done mostly on suspicions, and perhaps a little on superstition.
At 6X, you almost definately won't get a good burn as at 4X, and 8X is
worse. That's why not all media is certified to record at 8X, or even 6X.
But I suspect that if the disc is excellent, and certified to be recordable
at 8X, it will last a long time if it's recorded at 8X.
Peace,
