Anyone have the phone number for EcoCharge? -Tom

From: Hawker <Hawker@Connriver.net> Subject: Gina issues from the horses mouth Date: Wed, 02 Jun 1999 22:20:33 -0400 Howdy folks. I recently read in a DAT-Heads circulating Word Doc that the Gina card adds dither if reading 16 bit data. I must say I was rather shocked to read this, but it explains what I have been hearing. Since I own a Gina card I contacted Event.. who were worthless, to confirm this. Event has not returned any of my E-mails. I am now having a VERY nice conversation with ECHO (who designed the card, Event just markets it) that i thought I would forward to all those interested. For what its worth I have found my Gina card a good card for SPDIF in. Since i have better out-board A/Ds I have never used the Analog IO for anything other than simple monitoring ,and can't report on that. It has three problems (other than this dither issue) that I have found. 1) It only runs on Win 95/98. Since I use NT 4.0 SP3 for everything else I had to create a dual boot to use it. i sure whish the had NT drivers. 2) Switching sync from internal to external is a pain in the neck. The switch is VERY buried down in a windoz system control panel. If you set to internal sync (which you need to receive SPDIF without pops and clicks) and want to monitor what you are working on external via the SPDIF out you must have a DAT deck or other SPDIF generator connected in... that or switch to internal sync. 3) They drivers it came with suck, and don't have full monitoring capability. However a trip to Events web page to download new drivers fixed that. Other than that the device has worked fantastic with no weird problems, overruns or anything else. From the weird problems folks report with other cards I can only assume this is a more stable card than most in it's class. >Dear Mr. Schaich- > >Yes, if you record from Gina's S/PDIF input in 16 bit mode, Gina will >treat the S/PDIF signal as 24 bits and add dither noise before >converting to 16 bit samples. > >We apologize if this is inconvenient. On our end, we will look into >adding a feature that would let you turn this off. > >For the time being, it is possible for you to use the Cool Edit Pro >(Special Edition) that came with your Gina to do this. Record from the >Gina S/PDIF inputs in 32 bit mode, then use Cool Edit to convert to 16 >bit format (make sure and uncheck the dither option in Cool Edit). >While I realize that this is not as satisfactory as being able to bring >samples into Sound Forge, it will at least let you capture perfect, >bit-for-bit S/PDIF. > >Matt Gonzalez >Echo > Parts of other E-mails >> 2) Could you describe the dither? Shape? #bits, filter response etc? > >It's a simple TPDF dither. >> 3) IMHO the dither issue is costing you LARGE sales numbers.. >> I for one would not had bought the GINA if I knew about that then as my number >> one use is to import my DATS for editing to CD. I want in exactly what I recorded, nothing else. >> If I wanted Dither I would have used UV22 when I printed to DAT in the first place anyway so now >> I end up with dither x2. >> A switch to disable dither would be Highly desirable. Is there perhaps a bit in a EEPROM or the GAL >> I could change, or a register.. or is it more difficult than that? > >No, it's a DSP code and driver change. I'll look into it. Hawker

From: "adam smith" <adaml@lanset.com> Subject: Pre-Amp A/B Comparison Reply-To: adaml@lanset.com Date: Wed, 02 Jun 1999 19:24:27 -0700 This idea might be technically flawed but I thought I'd put it out there anyway. Why not use 1 pair of mic's, B&K, Schoeps, Geffell's etc. Run them into a phantom supply. Out of the phantom and into a patch bay or construct a "splitter y cable" (would soldering two different cables to a single XLR create impedance problems??) and then run 1 set to 1 pre amp and the other to another. Comparing Sonosax, Lunatec, Apogee, Oade etc. Then route the signal from the pre amps to 2 decks of the same model. This way you would have the same signal feeding both pre's (in theory) Like I said I'm not sure if this would work but if you could feed the signal from 1 pair of mic's into different pre amps I think that would be the best way to compare the difference between pre amps. My .02 don't know if it is feasible though. Adam
