I have down front tickets and was wondering if someone with a tapers ticket might be able to bring in my deck and some small mics. I had trouble last year getting in the door with out a tapers ticket and anticipate the same this year. I would be happy to return the favor in some kind way. Peace! Steve

From: PBTS Support <PBTSSUPPORT@PANASONIC.com> Subject: Maxell Response on DDS Tape Date: Thu, 3 Jun 1999 16:20:41 -0400 As promised, here is the response from Maxell regarding the use of DDS tape in DAT decks. I am expecting similar letters from Sony, Denon, Tascam and three other tape manufacturers. I will post this info on DAT heads as it is received. I have converted the actual letter into a PDF file so anyone who is interested in receiving the original letter need only e mail us and request it. Thanks for your continued understanding. Bob Kozlarek Tech Support Manager Panasonic Panasonic Broadcast & Television Systems Co Mr. Bob Kozlarek Tech Support Manager 1 Panasonic Way, 2A-3 Secaucus, NJ 07094 Dear Mr. Kozlarek: This letter is in response to your correspondence of5/14/99. Maxell's official position on using DDS tape in a DAT audio recorder is as follows: Due to design differences between the two products, we absolutely do not endorse the usage of computer backup tape in a DAT audio deck. Prolonged usage of this product in a DAT machine can cause damage or premature wear to the recording heads resulting in costly repairs. In addition, any damage caused by the aforementioned usage, would void Maxell's Full Lifetime Warranty on the product and exclude Maxell from any liability for any damages incurred by the misuse of this product. In closing, no one representing Maxell Corporation of America has ever disclosed nor endorsed the incorrect fact that these two products are identical and can be safely interchanged. From: swsmith@ix.netcom.com Subject: Quantegy discontinuing DDS tapes??? Date: Thu, 3 Jun 1999 17:06:59 -0500 (CDT) Just got home from a trip to my local recording media supplier, and was horrified to learn that the Quantegy company, (formerly Ampex, then Ampex/Quantegy) has been sold yet again and is no longer going to manufacture 4mm tape formats, in either DAT or DDS grades. My supplier is now offering a hell of a price on them as closeouts, and I'll be taking full advantage of the deal, but they will run out eventually. I'm needing a reliable substitute at less than DAT prices. Same old story . . . Any suggestions? From: Aaron Westendorf <westea@rpi.edu> Subject: Ground hum problem Date: Thu, 03 Jun 1999 18:42:55 -0400 I just set up my new mics to test everything out, and I have a ground hum that's causing me some concern. FWIW, I'm running a pair of AKG C1000 through Canare cables, and then to a XLR>RCA balanced>unbalanced converter, then through an RCA>1/8" convert to my D8. It's not exactly the straightest way of getting there, but all the converters are very high quality gold interconnects and shielded cables. Anyway, it appears that the RCA>1/8" converter is giving me some problems, in the right channel. If the cables aren't touching, I get this very bad ground hum. I don't have one of those cheesy plastic RCA>1/8" converters available to test and see if that gets rid of it, but if anyone else has ever had this problem, I'd appreciate hearing what you did to fix it. I'll be taping my first show this Saturday, so I could really use some quick help to fix this problem. thanks, Aaron Ps - I forgot to mention, the RCA>1/8" adapter is the Radio Shack gold one, if anyone's familiar with that. -- ==================================================== Aaron J.
