From: Fever99@aol.com Subject: Can Adaptec CD go over 74 min? (noDAT content) Date: Fri, 4 Jun 1999 00:46:54 EDT I'm using the Adaptec Easy CD Creator to create my CD-Rs, but I have a few discs to copy that run a little bit over the 74min mark. Is there a way to override the software to go over the 74 min limit? Thanks for any help, Steve

From: JFC071@aol.com Subject: Airplanes/Mike stands? Date: Fri, 4 Jun 1999 06:18:10 EDT I have some flight time scheduled later this month and was wondering how I should go about getting my mike stand on board. Ideally I'd like to just carry-on my stand and stash it overhead with the rest of my gear. Is this the normal procedure or will I have to check it with the rest of my luggage? I'd appreciate a few tips from someone in the know. Jason

I believe this is the same as the DTR-80P's near-twin, the Casio DA-R100. The coax port accepts a 1/8" stereo to 2-RCA cable, the same kind that one uses to connect portable audio to home audio systems. One of the RCAs is digital output, the other is input. The Casio-supplied cable is actually has a Tip-Ring-Ring-Sleeve plug, as opposed to the T-R-S plug normally found on mini to dual-RCA adaptors. I recall that this provides separate grounds for input and output, but in practice, the common ground seems to work OK. One more thing. When using the DTR-80P's mic preamp, beware of patching AC-powered Sony portable DATs, even digitally. The D3, D7, D8, and D100 pick up a lot of hum from their AC adaptors and will send the noise upstream to a Casio or Denon feeding them. Bleah! From: American-Digital <dan@am-dig.com> Subject: RE: Quantegy discontinuing DDS tapes??? Date: Fri, 4 Jun 1999 10:26:34 -0400 < Just got home from a trip to my local recording media supplier, and was horrified to learn that < the Quantegy company, (formerly Ampex, then Ampex/Quantegy) has been sold yet again and < is no longer going to manufacture 4mm tape formats, in either DAT or DDS grades. [snip] To the best of my knowledge Ampex, Ampex/Quantegy or Quantegy never manufactured any 4mm tape. They purchased from a third party. Ampex, for awhile was made by KAO. Then KAO stopped making 4mm tape and I believe that Quantegy is now Sony tape in a different shell. The shell is made by Shape. I think there is currently only 4 manufacturers of 4mm tape. 1. Sony 2. Maxell 3. Fuji 4. TDK Third party manufacturing is always a closely held industry secret. If it was common knowledge that IGA salt was made by the same company in the same facility as Morton's salt (that costs 20% more) that could potentially hurt Morton's sales. (What the hell, salt is NaCl, unless chem. class lied to me.) Same holds true selling DAT tape for 30% more than DDS tape. (For one thing DAT tape pays a 15% RIAA royalty tax.) Manufactures can easily claim there are 2 different manufacturing processes without lying. However, the difference is probably DAT tape is made on Tues. and Thurs. and DDS tape is made Mon., Weds., and Fri. I have been waiting for the argument to start with computer grade CDRs vs. Digital Audio (consumer) CDRs. I thought the RIAA would try something like "there is magic dust sprinkled on Digital Audio CDRs, that is why you should use them and why they cost more". Also notice how they are very quickly moving away from using the term "for consumers". I have enjoyed watching that name disappear off all "Digital Audio CDR" packaging. Does anyone have any additional information? Thanks- Dan

From: "Rob Bertrando" <rbbert@earthlink.net> Subject: DDS tapes Date: Fri, 4 Jun 1999 08:07:02 -0700 To me, this is the power of the RIAA and music industry talking. A few years ago, as has been amply documented here and elsewhere, no one in the industry tried to hide the fact that DDS and DAT tapes are identical (and of course they are, by any test available, except for the leader tape). Now, however, with industry PARANOIA about piracy, and talk of _audible_ watermarking on prerecorded media, to prevent and/or trace copies, their official stance has changed. One would think they (the music industry) would look at their sales figures and realize that the explosion of technology benefits everyone, especially them. >>From: PBTS Support <PBTSSUPPORT@PANASONIC.com> >>Subject: Maxell Response on DDS Tape >>Date: Thu, 3 Jun 1999 16:20:41 -0400 As promised, here is the response from Maxell regarding the use of DDS tape in DAT decks. I am expecting similar letters from Sony, Denon, Tascam and three other tape manufacturers. I will post this info on DAT heads as it is received. I have converted the actual letter into a PDF file so anyone who is interested in receiving the original letter need only e mail us and request it. Thanks for your continued understanding. Bob Kozlarek Tech Support Manager Panasonic Panasonic Broadcast & Television Systems Co Mr. Bob Kozlarek Tech Support Manager 1 Panasonic Way, 2A-3 Secaucus, NJ 07094 Dear Mr. Kozlarek: This letter is in response to your correspondence of5/14/99. Maxell's official position on using DDS tape in a DAT audio recorder is as follows: Due to design differences between the two products, we absolutely do not endorse the usage of computer backup tape in a DAT audio deck. Prolonged usage of this product in a DAT machine can cause damage or premature wear to the recording heads resulting in costly repairs. In addition, any damage caused by the aforementioned usage, would void Maxell's Full Lifetime Warranty on the product and exclude Maxell from any liability for any damages incurred by the misuse of this product. In closing, no one representing Maxell Corporation of America has ever disclosed nor endorsed the incorrect fact that these two products are identical and can be safely interchanged. Date: Fri, 4 Jun 1999 11:19:51 -0400 (EDT) The Denon DTR-80P uses a special cable for digital IO: it has RCA connectors at both ends, and tip-ring-ring-sleeve in the middle. (Typical stereo 1/8" is tip-ring-sleeve.) Some people have found that a standard 2-RCA to stereo mini cable works. Radio Shack has the latter. Seth

From: jflannery@excite.com Subject: New D100-any info on good batteries readily available Date: Fri, 04 Jun 1999 08:35:55 PDT I just purchased the anniversary d100 and was wondering what people are using for batteries. Are these Sony dat rechargeable batteries any better than a top of the line Energizer alkaline? I want to find the ones with the longest charge for the obvious reasons. I believe I'll be taping a show with 2 sets, so I am looking for batteries that will go easy 2 hours. I figured I'd switch them out at the break. A quick note from those that have this machine would be much appreciated. Any tips will help. I don't think I'll be able to order some special ones before I need to use it-so they are gonna be your normal store ones. Please help! But, we in the dat-head community know better. That's Maxell's official position, but in 1996, someone within Maxell (Mark Okafuji, an Engineering Manager) did publish the actual specifications comparing DDS with audio DAT proving that HS4/60 and DT-120 are identical. Now, in 1999, rather than educate the public regarding the actual facts, we get political statements bolstering Panasonics position on the subject. Why aren't they standing behind their engineering mgr's statement and reaffirming the facts and giving the customer the choice? Gordon Gidluck
From: marty hanlon <mphmusixman@yahoo.com> Subject: Eco Charge->DA-p1 Date: Fri, 4 Jun 1999 09:16:19 -0700 (PDT) I was the original da-p1 that eco charge saw, and one of the first problems that Pro digital saw with regards to the incompatability. I'm obviously not happy with Jamie or eco charge and if DA-p1 users are thinking of a class-action law suit, maybe they'd contact me privately I may hire a lawyer. My deck was in the shop twice due to the incompatability problems so I think Jamie owes us more than an apology and I think that da-p1 users should stop using their eco charges immediately and seek some kind of solution from eco charge. It's obvious that these batteries are six volt and any retailer should've known better. I was the first customer so there was no time early on when eco charge sold anything different to da-p1 users. I've waited to see anything about this problem here before I posted. Is there any way to convert these batteries to some other use such as powering a preamp or other portable?? I would rather see something positive done with these. Any advice from you technical-types would be appreciated. _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
