Almost all the responses I got (thanks everyone!) mentioned Cool Edit (Pro). It
appears there is no other software for this specific task?
I'll give CEP a go at this piece of audio and if the results are OK I'll post

preferably recent shows ('98-'99). Anybody got any? I've got plenty to
trade.

Date: Fri, 4 Jun 1999 22:14:13 +0200
Hi all
I am a newbie in burning CDRs and want to transfer some of my best
tapes to CDR.
The software I have available is
ProTools 4.1.1
Jam 2.5
RayGun HyperEngine 2.2.2
Toast 3.5.6
TrackThief 1.1.1
UltraRecorder and some more shareware applications
Macintosh G3/233/128MB/4GB with System 8.6
Now my questions
- How can I make single songs of a live recording so that I can make indexes.
Is ProTools needed for that and how can I make the needed regions easily?
Can I make this in Jam too directly?
- Is there any difference in the AIFF file that is created by
AudioExtractor resp. TrackThief? Which is better?
thanks in advance

I'm looking for some veteran traders who, like myself, have quality DAT
collections and are slowly migrating to CD-R. Particularly interested in
JGB and other Garcia side projects. Tons of sweet recordings to trade.
Looking for flawless (so far as is possible from the master) DAT>CD

So are you saying that Mark Okafuji was not a representative of the Maxell

I agree. Maxell DDS tapes are *not* good for DAT recording.
The reel friction is too high and their tape causes head clogs.
(See a previous message from me on this subject for more details).
Now, as to other brands of DDS tape, that's another story...

Hi Folks,
First of all, I am not subscribed to this list, so please send any responses
to me directly at: sam_berg@esri.com.
Thanks!
A question that some of you perhaps could address:
I have a few Mp3 files on my laptop and am experimenting with techniques to
produce the best tapes possible.
My current technique is to run a 1/8" cord from the laptop's headphone
output to a Y adapter to 2 RCA audio cables which are then jacked into the
PHONO slots of the receiver.
The tape deck can then record from the output, or when playing the MP3s with
WinAmp, I can play the tunes through the speakers hooked up to the reciever.
The problem: The signal is severly muffled when both monitoring through the
speakers, or recording, as well.
Listening directly through the headphones demonstrates that the quality of
the recording is fine- it sounds great, then.
With even low volume on the reciever, I can't get the output volume of the
laptop higher than around 10% without being severly distorted.
Even when the volume seems to be OK, the quality of the sound is terrible...
So my initial thoughts are that the problem are:
1) The connection through the Y adapter is very poor...
or
2) The physics of the output watts of the laptop's headphone amp and the
reciever's input are incompatible...
or
3) The volume levels of the components are off (although I've tried several
configurations)...
But, I could really use some advice from experienced dubbers. Any thoughts?
Thanks,
-sam

Hello ZAPPA traders...
What may sound like a stupid question is just one out of curiosity... Did FZ
condone or dislike taping by fans? I remember he put out the "Beat the Boots"
series a few years ago, but I have always wondered what his taping policy
was. Boy what a shame to have missed seeing such an amazing musician before
he died. I was only 16 and remember hearing about it in the car driving to
school that morning.
Any replys appreciated, either to the list or privately.

People, unless you want to be ripped off like many on the Turtle Tree
and other trees, avoid any trades with this guy. Of course, I'd be happy
to retract my statement if he ever made good on our trade from a year
ago... and yes, I did politely remind him "several" times. If you need

AFAIK, the royalty on blank recording media, digital or otherwise, is 3%,
not 15% (which of course doesn't begin to explain the price disparity
between "computer" and "audio" grade media).

Date: Fri, 4 Jun 1999 09:16:19 -0700 (PDT)
I was the original da-p1 that eco charge saw, and one of the first problems
that Pro digital saw with regards to the incompatability. I'm obviously not
happy with Jamie or eco charge and if DA-p1 users are thinking of a class-
action law suit, maybe they'd contact me privately I may hire a lawyer.
My deck was in the shop twice due to the incompatability problems so I think
Jamie owes us more than an apology and I think that da-p1 users should stop
using their eco charges immediately and seek some kind of solution from eco
charge.
It's obvious that these batteries are six volt and any retailer should've
known better. I was the first customer so there was no time early on when
eco charge sold anything different to da-p1 users. I've waited to see
anything about this problem here before I posted.
Is there any way to convert these batteries to some other use such as
powering a preamp or other portable??
I would rather see something positive done with these.
Any advice from you technical-types would be appreciated.
__________________________________________________
Now I must say, I've had my DAP1 powered by the Eco-charge 6V batteries that
you mention now for over 2 years, and have yet to experience a single
problem. In the last two years I have recorded over 200 shows, all using
unlabeled Maxell HS4-90 DDS tapes. My deck and battery combo is rock solid.
Before you go opening up a lawsuit against them, consider this:
In January 1995 I bought a brand new D7. Plugged it in, popped in a tape,
pressed play, and 2 seconds later the deck shut off, and then continuously
cycled on and off, whether it was plugged in or using batteries. Of course
the store replaced the unit...and a couple of months later I started
noticing diginoise on playback of perfectly good tapes around the hour and a
half mark. That deck was in the shop twice, first it was a bad chip they
said, then it was something else, finally I stopped using it and got the
DAP1, eventually I shelled out the money for new heads and lo and behold
that did the trick, but by then I was ready to sell the unit and so I did.
In June 1995 I bought a Denon DCM-460 CD player...and used it for a whole 8
hours before it broke and wouldn't play anything. Nothing would work, and
the unit wouldn't open. Had to get the unit replaced. The replacement has
worked flawlessly ever since.
In April 1996 I bought a demo Sony DTC-790 DAT deck. No kidding, I have
logged over 6000 hours on this thing (and that's probably conservative), yet
have only had to get it cleaned once. In April 1997, same time as I got the
DAP1, I got a Panasonic SV3800, and logged 900 hours on it in less than 6
months...then had to get it professionally cleaned. 9 more months and 1000
more hours later, I had to get the heads replaced. 300 hours later a chip
went bad and it wouldn't read any tapes, and after they fixed that problem
it wrote nothing but diginoise. A thorough cleaning and realignment finally
fixed it.
The point of all these personal examples is that it is the nature of
electronics, particularly very small electronics, to periodically break.
Sometimes they break early, sometimes late, sometimes not at all. I think
you had a DAP1 that was destined to break. I don't recall many people at
all having the problems with their DAP1 and Eco-Charge batteries as you've
had. Go ahead, take an informal poll on DAT-heads of everyone with this
setup, see how many have had problems. I would venture to guess that it's a
small percentage, and if there were a way to poll everyone in the world who
owns a DAP1, I would also venture to guess that it pretty much mirrors the
failure rate overall of the unit.
I don't think Eco-Charge owes you anything, to be honest. I've been a
guinea pig for one of their products too...I have a Vortex power supply,
which is two 12 volt lead acids into an ultra clean power inverter, all
packed nicely into a Pelican case with an on/off switch and 3 prong power
outlet on the side. I'm extremely happy with it, and I think they know
their stuff and did enough research on the DAP1 and using it with 6 volts to
determine that it would run ok without problems. Again, mine works totally
fine, I think your deck is just a lemon. Take this all as you see fit
however...I can't stop you from bringing a lawsuit against them. I'm just
saying that you should look at the big picture, and not just the isolated
case of your deck failing.
Thanks for hearing me out.

Nickle Meatal Hydride (like those that came with your DAT) are
GREAT! They are way better than Alk, far better than NiCad
(i.e.Eveready Rechargables).
I bought two more pair from an electronic wholesaler (Digi-Key) for
$3.50 per battery. They last almost as long as the SONYs, but
they didn't have the "bump" on the positive terminal. I had to
carefully solder on a bead of solder to make them work.
I shudder to think what SONY might charge for extras, but if they're
not too bad, I'd get 'em. Two sets of these NiMH will get you
through a whole concert and let you listen to the show on the way
home.
