Updated list of bands that allow taping as of 9/04/99 (Kurt Andrew Kemp)
From: Kurt Andrew Kemp <kkemp@ccsf.cc.ca.us> Subject: Updated list of bands that allow taping as of 9/04/99 Date: Sat, 4 Sep 1999 20:17:19 -0700 Dear fellow tapers: This is the first time since last Spring (4/99) that I've updated this beast (had a most eventful summer), and I appreciate your understanding and patience. I can't say for sure when I'll be to update it next, but probably some time within the next three months. I guess you can put this in the same category as the Market Post, whose frequency is "irregular". Starting next time, I will only post the new or modified entries to DAT-Heads, but you'll still be able to see this entire list at "http://www.enteract.com/~wagner/btat". If you have additions or corrections to share with me, please email me at <kkemp@ccsf.cc.ca.us> and I'll get your message. Thanks again to all of you who have helped me update and add to this list over the years. Without your help, it would not exist and would not have grown exponentially as it has over time. BTW, I don't have any "inside" info; all I do is organize the updated info that all of you share with me. The only ground rule I have for sending me information is that it has to come from your own direct experience and cannot be mere heresay. If a friend of yours saw a band and noticed a change in their taping policy, please ask that friend to email me directly if possible. If your friend doesn't have email, email me privately and I'll give you my phone number so he can call me directly. Please examine the list below and correct me if I have included any misinformation. Also, updates are in order, as bands' taping policies often change with time. Note that (a) = audio taping allowed, (v) means video taping allowed and (BA) means (sound)board access allowed. "Aud" refers to analogue audio taping and "daud" refers to digital audio taping. <> represents the present hometown(s) of the members of a band, not where they used to live years ago. BTW, if you see <?> after a band's name, please help me locate their present hometown(s). Finally, if you don't see (BA) after a band's name, you can assume that their policy is to disallow it, even if they occasionally do allow it. I might also mention that Mike Wagner has gone to considerable lengths to convert my updated list to html and to create links to the websites listed under the bands. If you want to check it out, you can find it at his URL, which is: "http://www.enteract.com/~wagner/btat". If you want to create a link from your webpage to his, please let him know first by emailing him at <wagner@enteract.com>. He'll be honored. If you're interested in availing yourself of the vast resources found in the Jeff Tiedrich's Resources For Tapers, which also contains this list, you can find them at: "http://www.resourcesfortapers.com/resources/tapeband.html". Thanks to a suggestion by Eugene Hu, I have decided to create a separate list of the bands that are very much against taping and actively search out tapers during their shows. You will find this separate list immediately following the regular list of bands that allow taping. If you know of any others bands who fit this description, please let me know. Finally, an * before a band's name represents new or modified info since my last update (thanks to Gordon Gullahorn for suggesting this). ====================================================================== *BANDS THAT ALLOW TAPING* (as of 9-04-99) Acoustic Junction <Boulder, CO> (a,BA) Their taping policy is to allow DAUD and DAT BA, but you have to talk to the soundman early for the latter. *Acoustic Syndicate <Asheville, NC> (a,BA) This bluegrass band encourages daud taping and will let you tape from the board if you make arrangements before the show. No SBD access, so bring your mics. Under no circumstances is power available. Please stay out of the way of the crew at all venues, and respect those around you so that everyone has a good time. In particular, please do not set up mic stands directly in front of the soundboard. If you see someone setting up a stand right in front of the board, please educate them kindly. If there is a problem at a venue, you can ask to speak to their manager, Dennis Belline, provided you arrive AT LEAST one hour before showtime. *Cowboy Junkies <?> (a) On their website (http://www.cowboyjunkies.com) they have stated that they are flattered that people want to tape and trade their shows, but venue restrictions may apply. No board patches (due to lack of ambience) and don't bug their onery soundman. On their website, go to "exclusives", then "message board", then 6 pages down to "bootlegs". Cowboy Mouth <New Orleans, LA> (a) Audience-only taping encouraged. Their engineer, Chuck Keith, once did sound for Jackopierce and is a relatively taper-friendly guy. Stay out of his way, get there early, and ask for his address to send him a copy. Be prepared to provide your own power, but he may help when possible. Shows run around 2 hours. Taper emptor! Craw <Cleveland, OH> (a,v,BA) BA depends on venue and how good the board is. They also allow video. Crazy Alice <Boston, MA> (a,BA) They'll probably ask for a copy. Crenshaw <Washington DC> (a) They allow daud and will even pay you for the cost of postage and tape if you send them a copy. Video? SBD? Their website is at: "http://www.crenshawnet.com/". Critters Buggin' <Seattle, WA> (a,v,BA) Their drummer, Matt Chamberlin, was the second drummer for Pearl Jam. They are very pro-taping. Their sax player, Skerik, has gone on record as saying that they have no problem with BA, but check with the soundman first. If the board is substandard, they prefer not to give out BA. Also, they are very happy to get a copy of the show, so please send one to them. The name of their soundperson is Melanie (Mel) Detmer, who openly allows all taping, but you must ask Mel early for BA. The Cure <?> (a?) The band has apparently said in interviews that they don't mind folks taping them, but they never inform the venues of this mindset, so its stealth or nothing. Curious Ritual <Malden, MA> (a,BA) Talk to Sean O'Brien. Currently Nameless <Burlington, VT> (a,BA) They are very taper friendly and allow board patches on a first come, first served basis. Their soundman is Eric, who is a great guy and will always accomodate a DAT-Head. Board patches are dependent on the venue's equipment and will usually be run out of Eric's DA-P1. Daddy Longlegs <?, MI> (a) They encourage taping. BA and video are decided on a show-by-show basis and must be OKed ahead of time. Aud taping is always allowed. Mic stands are permitted but please show the courtesy of not putting it right between the soundman and the band. DAT OK. Their website is: "http://daddy.longlegs.com" Dah-veed <Austin, TX> (a,BA) ask early for BA. Dan Bern <?> (a,v,BA) DSBD and DAUD OK. He has given permission on several occasions for video, DAUD and DSBD taping. Your best bet is to contact his management in advance as they are aware of his permissive stance, and will go out of their way to help out. If you ever have a venue that you expect to give a problem (like GAMH in SF), call his management in advance and speak to Amanda Stark at 310-652-2205; she has even gone so far as to call a "problem" venue in advance to tell them that a taper would be taping *for the band*. When Amanda goes to the door to help you get in w/your equipment, the 1st thing she will ask you is if you have asked Dan for permission and if he has given it to you. If you don't have it, you may be turned away. At a show, his tour manager (Miki [pronounced Mikey, a woman] Walsh) may or may not be there to help you out. If she's there, she'll give 100% support to the taping cause. To email his offices: <danbern@gte.net>. His webpage is at: "http://home1.gte.net/danbern/" Note: Dan usually sings 1-3 songs per show away from the mic, so it's best to work with a fellow taper; one of you does BA, the other DAUD. The Dark Horses <St. Louis, MO> (a,v) DAT aud and video are usually OK. Check first by emailing Randy, their webmaster at <700083@fs3.law.missouri.edu>. Their webpage is at: "http://www.thedarkhorses.com" Dark Star Orchestra <Chicago, IL> (a,BA) DAT AUD is always welcome, if not encouraged. BA is often possible, but venue dependent. Their soundman, Cam, is a very nice guy. In the past, Cam has given his setlist copy to tapers after the show. He is even willing to adjust the volume of the board feed to ensure a good tape. There will often be only one RCA output (no patch bay), so expect a daisy chain. Their homepage is: "http://www.darkstarorchestra.net". Darlahood <?> (a) They believe the music is meant to be shared. Check out their website at: "http://www.darlahood.com" *Dar Williams <?, MA> (a) Dar Williams, a folkie from Mass., completely supports audience taping, but does not permit soundboard patches (either DAT or analog cassette) unless approved in advance via AGF, her new management company in NY. Regarding mic stands, this is likely venue dependant. During a July '99 show in Toronto, she spotted someone stealthing and stopped the show to tell him he could put his mics on the table so he can get the best sound. Venue restrictions may apply. On her web page (http://www.panix.com/~tneff/dar/) she says taping & trading are just fine but that she would prefer tapers make a donation to an environmental trust fund she has established. Dave Alvin <?, CA> (a,BA) Dave recently (1/99) said after a show that he not only allows taping, he encourages it. He said he doesn't get to record often enough, his live CD has maybe a third of his regular material, and he mixes the set up every night, so encourages people to tape and trade. BA is dependent on the venue; ask early. Dave Matthews Band <Charlottesville, VA> (a) No BA. No video. Mic stands OK. DMB's stance on taping is the following: the band supports taping, the sound people have instituted a taping section at many west coast venues and are working on setting one up at all venues in the near future. Right now though, it's a transitional period. Unless it's a rare non-taping event, you may still record from anywhere in the venue--even when there is a taper section designated. Most tapers tickets can only be purchased at the box office and many are obstructed view seats. At some venues, there's a special entrance for those with tapers tickets. It's a good idea to call before you get there and get the scoop. Make sure to get the name of someone in charge at the amphitheater so that if there is a problem, he/she can be called and you can get in without the hassle. This taping policy holds true for Dave and Tim shows too. Their website can be found at: "http://www.dmband.com" *The Dave Wolfenberger Band <Cincinnati, OH> (a) They are an incredibly taper-friendly band (Dave is the former singer/songwriter for the Marshwiggles) and encourage daud taping and spreading the music. They will reserve a spot for you to tape if you contact them ahead of time at "http://Bluejordan.com/dave" or <Dave@bluejordan.com>. David Crosby <?> (a) David Crosby has recently been saying (in online discussion groups) that he encourages aud taping, trading and treeing of his shows, as long as no ones profits off it. David Gans and the Broken Angels <Oakland, CA> (a,BA) This band is no longer performing. David Gans is concentrating on his solo acoustic performances and songwriting for the time being. As with the band, DAT & mic stands are OK at the solo shows. BA is sometimes available, depending on the venue and the sound person. More info can be found at <http://www.trufun.com/gigs.html> *David Grisman Band <SF, CA> (a), No BA! Larry Cummings, their soundman, prefers that you be subtle while taping. He is very taper friendly and about the only restriction is that the *promoter* and the *house* cannot tape the show. Tapers in the audience are OK, but he asks that you bring no special equipment that would interfere with any other audience member's enjoyment of the show, e.g., no mics in the air blocking other people's view. Its best to contact the venue 3-4 days before the show to confirm that there's no venue prohibition of taping. David Nelson Band (of the original New Riders) <?> (a) BA often possible if you get there ahead of time and speak to Mookie (keyboards) or Steve or Tim, the bands sound techs. *Day By The River <Athens, GA> (a,v) DAT OK. They no longer allow BA of any kind. They encourage you to use your mics and Andy will go to bat for you if the venue gives you a hassle. They'd appreciate a copy, so get their address from Andy before the show. Check out their website at: "http://www.daybytheriver.com/tapers.html" DayInTheLife (Yes one word!)<NYC> (a,v) BA is possible, but venue- dependent. Talk to the band or tour manager. Dear America, <Atlanta, GA> (a,v,BA) DAT OK; Formerly known as Acoustic Workshop, they allow and encourage all forms of taping. They normally DAT all their shows from the SBD, and will give you a patch if you ask nicely. They will ask for a copy of the show if you record w/mics. Questions? Email <corburyjunction@boone.net> *Deep Banana Blackout <?, CT> (a) DAT aud OK, but no more BA (they don't like the mix). They mayor may not allow a matrix mix. Their video policy needs clarification. Check out their website at: "http://www.deepbananablackout.com" *Deke Dickerson & The Ecco-Fonics <Hollywood Ca> (a,v,BA) This country rock band, which plays in the style of Merle Travis, Joe Maphis, Chet Atkins, Scotty Moore, Tiny Moore, Les Paul & others, allows all kinds of taping. Deke is a very approachable nice guy, and enjoys tapers stopping by and saying hello. If possible, he would appreciate a copy of your recording. Deloris Telescope <St. Petersburg> (a) Delta Hurricanes <Memphis, TN> (a) They love folks to tape them and encourage you to daud tape rather than BA, which often sounds worse. Their sound engineer is Rhonda, who is very nice and helpful. She allows BA depending on the quality of the board. DemBoyz <Indianapolis, IN> (a,v,BA) This reggae band encourages taping of all kinds and gives out BA whenever possible. See their website at: "http://www.iquest.net/~dbudzak" For further info, contact their keyboard player, Doug, at <dbudzak@iquest.net>. Derek Trucks Band <Atlanta, GA> (a,v,BA) DAUD and video are no problem, but mics are encouraged in the smaller venues where the sbd is small and mainly for sound reinforcement. Their sound engineer's name is Marty Wall, very taper friendly. They appreciate copies, which few tapers seem to give them. Dial-7 <Laguna Beach, CA> (a) The bassist and lead guitarist of this metal/rap/reggae band said that they didn't care if folks tape them, but they'd like to hear the tape. Their video and SBD policies are unknown. Dire Straits <London, UK> (a) This was officially announced by their management company, Damage Management. It is assumed that Mark Knopfler solo concerts are also OK to tape. Please confirm. Especially in Europe, venue/country law restrictions may apply. Disco Biscuits <Philadelphia, PA> (a,BA) They are cool about aud and BA, and their soundman, John Lesser, is very accomodating and will be happy to set you up with a DAT SBD patch. Their website is at: "http://www.discobiscuits.com/" Don Caballero <Pittsburgh, PA> (a,v) They are cool with aud and video taping, occasional BA if you get there early. Please send them a copy of your tape. The Donna Jean (Godchaux) Band <?> (a,BA) They have been allowing aud and BA, DAT and ana, at their recent shows. Donna The Buffalo <Ithaca, NY> (a,BA) Soundman's name is Tomas (pronounced to-MAS). Taping encouraged, but BA may depend on venue. Arrive early. Permission may be required to use DAT. Check out their website at: "http://www.donnathebuffalo.com" or contact their archivist Tim at <Tim@RockBass.com>. The Doughnut Prodjekt <Buffalo, NY> (a,v,BA) DAT everything OK, depending on the venue. All they ask is that you don't hassle the venue soundman if he says no and that you don't block others' view if you bring your mic stand. Send them a copy and talk to Daiv after the show if you can. Email him at <x-jiff-x@geocities.com> if you have any questions or want to tape them. They love tapers. Doxy's Kitchen <Chapel Hill, NC> (a,BA) Now (12/98) defunct. Dr. Didg <Cambridge, UK> (a,BA) They are *very* open to daud taping and usually to BA too. Just ask for Graham Wiggins (the Didg player) before the show and let him know you'd like to tape. He'll approve a board feed, but will (of course) want you to send him a copy. The band is very pro-taping. *Drifting Through <Raleigh, NC> (a,v) They strongly encourage audio and video taping, but as of yet, no soundman, so no SBD patches. If you do tape them, please send the band a copy! You can contact their manager, Todd Finch at <rtfinch@driftingthrough.com>. Their website is: "http://www.driftingthrough.com". Drivin' n' Cryin' <Atlanta, GA> (a,BA) Mic stands OK. BA needs to be cleared first with either Warren, the road manager, or Bill, the soundboard operator. If further questions, contact Todd, the fan club manager at <Pruta@aol.com>.. The Drovers <Chicago, IL> (a,v,BA) are a Celtic band that allows daud, video, BA and mic stands. Check out: "http://www.efohio.com" *Edwin McCain <Atlanta, GA> (a) The latest word (8/99) from their webmaster is that board taping is not possible at this time. Audience taping is allowed as long as your mic stands don't obstruct the view of others. Be sure to double check with the Front of House sound engineer to make sure that taping is allowed the night of the show. Bring your own power. As always, no profit can be made, in any way, off of any recording. Check out his website at: "http://www.edwin.com" Eek-a-mouse <Los Angeles, CA> (a) After a good deal of pleading, the manager said he had to get Eek's permission. The manager even said "you guys have quite a community" so he does know about taping. Eek was OK w/DAUD, and actually gave me the sweetest spot in the house. The only condition was that I give them my master and my address. To date I haven't got my DAT back. The key here is to bring two decks. There are also many Eek SBD/AUD going around. Ekoostic Hookah <Columbus, OH> (a,BA) they allow both audience and board access. However, board access is only allowed when the venue is large enough for a decent mix to be possible and this is at the discretion of Bill, the sound engineer. Everyone is welcome to a board patch if Bill thinks it will come out well. Check out their homepage at: "http://www.ekoostik.com/". Elderberry Jam <Portland, ME> (a) DAT OK. If John is not there, Rob will generally give out a straight SBD patch, but not always. Bring all the appropriate cables and adapters. Mic stands and AUD taping is always allowed. If a venue's security ever stops you, ask them to check with the band (this could mean with Cal, or any of the band members, especially Todd, who's gone to bat for tapers numerous times and is a great guy). Rob Calabrese is still their soundman. If running dat, use a 90 meter. Many times they play one long set of 120-140 min. The band generally does not allow SBD patches, simply because they don't believe the tapes will sound as good as coming off high-quality mics. Their deal with Capricorn Records has NOTHING to do with their taping policy. Like the band ZERO, they run a permanent tape tree, with both DAT and analog branches, with several SBD seeds. For the record, their tour manager is Kenny Silva. *The Greyboy Allstars <San Diego, CA> (a,BA) The band encourages DAT BA, as well as DAUD. Their webpage is: "http://www.greyboyallstars.com/". Their road manager Brian Groves can be reached at <brian@20thcongress.com>. The Grifters <Memphis, TN> (a,BA) Their soundman, Martin, will OK any kind of audio taping, including DAT BA, although the overall sound is usually better using mics since not all the instruments are miked to the board. Their website is: "http://www.groovecollective.com". Groove Thangs <So. FL> (a,v) DAT aud OK. They occasionally allow BA, so ask early. Guided By Voices <Dayton, OH> (a,BA) Catch any band member early to request BA; by show time they'll all be too drunk to understand the question. Guster <Somerville, MA> (a,BA) DAT OK. Mike stands OK. Formerly "Gus". Hamell On Trial <NYC> (a,BA) Just talk to him before the show. He's bald and well-rounded. BA isn't always the best as he often talks to the audience without the mic. *The Handsome Family <Chicago, IL> (a) Husband and wife team, Brett and Rennie Sparks, are great people touring on a tight budget. They have no problem at all with you taping them and instead of you sending them a copy, they prefer you send them a Wilco tape. HateBreed <NYC> (a,v) Talk to the band for video. The Hatters <Atlanta, GA> (a,BA) DAT BA strongly encouraged! *Hayden <Toronto, ON Canada> (a) He has said in an interview that he doesn't see why anyone would want to tape his shows but as long as its for personal use, he doesn't mind. He does not inform venues. His web site is at: "http://web.idirect.com/~hayden/". Headstone Circus <Richmond, VA> (a,BA) DAT BA OK. (hed)pe <Huntington Beach,CA> (a,v,BA) They allow daud, vid and BA, but BA is venue-dependent. They are friendly; talk to the band first. Helmet <NYC> (a,v,BA) As of 2/99, they have broken up and Page Hamilton will be doing a solo thing soon in the Spring or Summer of '99. Henry Kaiser <Oakland, CA> (a,v,BA) Henry encourages any kind of taping that does not interfere with the sound tech, audience enjoyment or presentation of the particular gig. Board access is up to the soundman & venue, and they may veto it if they choose, but it's fine with Henry. Mic stands are OK, as long as they don't get in anyone's way. He doesn't mind if fans trade tapes of his shows. His fan website contains a bulletin board where you can leave questions or info for him. Check it out at: "http://php.iupui.edu/~mapiper/hk/home.html" Henry Rollins <Los Angeles, CA> (a) but venue-dependent His Name Is Alive <?, MI> (a) Check with Warren D., himself a trader/ collector. Hitmen <?, MO> (a,BA) DAT OK. H.O.R.D.E. tours <?> (a) If you have a problem getting your equipment in the door, insist on talking to the head of security. Taping is allowed from your seat, but mic stand must be kept low. Be there early, at 3:15 or so to catch Neil Young's solo acoustic set in the small tent. You will not have enough time to get from the second stage to the main stage without missing part of the latter, so plan your taping accordingly. Hot Tuna <Athens, OH> (a) Although in the past they have allowed taping sporadically and inconsistently outside of the Further Festivals, in '98 they have been more open to it and have been allowing it more regularly. No guarantee the venue will know, however. No BA. For Hot Tuna/Jorma Kaukonen setlists, check out: "http://www.users.interport.net/~mykescot/". Huffamoose <?> (a?) Picture taking OK. Aud taping is a "don't ask, and we won't hassle you" policy because of their contract with the record company. Stealth is required. No BA. Hum <Champaign, IL> (a,v) They are now better about informing the venues about their pro-taping stance. They would like you to send them a copy if it comes out well. Send to: Matt Talbot c/o Parasol Records, 905 S. Lynn St., Urbana, IL 61801-5205 Check out their web site at: "http://www.prairienet.org/~hum/" Human Waste Project <Los Angeles, CA> (a,v) Most of the band members are cool with taping. Jeff is especially pro-taping. Management attitude is unclear. Their website is at: "http://www.humanwasteproject.com". Humpers <Long Beach, CA> (a,v) They allow aud taping and video, with permission. However, venue restrictions (and an anti-taping in house soundman) may apply. They like a copy of the tape to be sent to them at the record label address, which they'll give to you at the show. Hybrid Children <Helsinki, Finland> (v) Hypnotic Clambake <Boston, MA> (a,BA) DAT OK. Audio taping encouraged, but NO video without prior permission from band before each particular show. Board patches are available if the club's board will allow it, both analog and digital are fine. The current soundman's name is Mark and he is very friendly and helpful. The band's road manager is no longer Pickle, it is now Dan. For further info, contact their publicist/propagandist, Stacey, at <claminfo@aol.com>. For tour dates and such, check out their new website at: "http://www.hypnotic-clambake.com/" Ian Moore <Austin, TX> He is cool with taping but his manager, Jan Mirkin, is not. Steer clear of her at all costs. Stealth is required. Ian recently was quoted as saying: "We don't necessarily discourage taping, though it is conditional on people being ethical. In other words, no selling, or in any way making money off our music. So far everything has been cool." Idle Hands <Little Rock, AK> (a,v,BA) They allow BA, but aud FOB usually sounds better. Iguanas <New Orleans, LA> (a,BA) for BA, ask Joe Cabral early. Iko-Iko <Miami, FL> (a) Ask Graham Drout, the lead singer, for permission. Board patches are allowed, if available. DAT OK. Video allowed, if possible. Illuminati <NYC> See under "Joe Gallant's Illuminati". *Inasense <NYC> (a,BA) They encourage aud and board taping, both DAT and analog. They do not have their own soundman, so if the soundguy gives you a problem, just ask a band member (nicely) to help you out. At most New York area shows Yossi will be there as the official taper, and he'll be happy to give you a patch. If he's not there, or if it's not a local show, bring mics if possible...many gigs don't have soundboards! If you tape a show and he's not there, offer to make the band a copy...they really appreciate it! Their website is "http://www.inasense.com". Incubus <?> (a,BA) They encourage and allow daud taping and trading of their shows. They allow BA approximately 50% of the time, according to the mood of the soundman or band. Talk with the band, the tour manager or Mark Shoffner, their soundman, before the show and offer to make him a copy. They prefer that you circulate their board tapes rather than inferior aud ones. Indecision <Charlottesville, VA> (a,v,BA) They still get together to play about 5 times per year. They stopped heavy touring about 6 years ago. They currently play within the southeast and allow daud recording, video and BA at their shows, barring venue restrictions. Dan McCrystal, the sound engineer, is always very helpful. If anyone has a problem at the door, Dan should be contacted. Their website is at: "http://www.indecision.com". Independents <?, Northern CA> (a,BA) DAT OK. ing <San Francisco, CA> (a,v,BA) Playing REM>Pink Floyd influenced tunes in the SF Bay Area, they encourage all types of taping for your listening enjoyment. To contact the band, email <inghead@aol.com>. Their website is: "http://www.quality-schnallity.com/ing.htm". Invisible Lisa <Muskegon, MI> (a,v) The band allows daud taping and photos. Talk to the drummer before the show. Band would like copies. I Radio Iodine <?> (a) aud DAT OK, according to their singer. Talk to her before the show to get permission. Jabber <Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada> (a,BA) BA is allowed only if the band feels the board is good enough to produce a good sbd tape. Jackopierce <Dallas, TX> (a,BA) DAT BA OK, no video. They have announced that their New Years show will be their last. Thus, they'll be defunct as of 1/1/98. Until then you should continue to ask Chuck Keith, their soundman, for BA several days ahead of time if possible. His email address is <chuckkeith@aol.com>. Also, it is highly encouraged that you get there at sound check at 5-6pm. He is very cool about taping and really appreciates it when tapers make a copy for him and the band. You can contact their management (Robinson-Wood, Dallas) by calling (214) 747-9663. Their website is: "http://www.jackopierce.com" Jambay <San Francisco, CA> (a,BA) Please note that this band is now defunct. They played their last show on 11/09/96. Three of the ex-members are currently playing as the Jambay Trio and they still very much encourage taping. The fourth ex-member, Shelley L. Doty, performs solo or with a drummer and is very enthusiastic about taping. Jangowood <Rochester, NY> (a,v,BA) They allow all forms of taping and offer SBD patches. Just talk to Danny, their soundman well before the show. Jason White and the Dying Breed <Cleveland, OH> (a,BA) They'll allow you to set up your own SBD/aud mix if you have all the requisite equipment. Check out their web site at: "http://www.en.com/jasonwhite" Jawbox <D.C.> (a) Jawbox broke up in early '97, but J. and Bill have a new band called Burning Airlines. See their entry above. *Jazz is Dead <?> (a,BA) After receiving reports in 1/99 that JID no longer allows taping nor do they play Grateful Dead tunes anymore, at the 4/5/99 show at the Rialto Theatre in Tucson, they played Dead tunes again and allowed DAT BA again. Further confirmation is needed. In every show this tour (Spring, '99) the 2nd set is the entire Wake of the Flood album. For more info, see their website at:"http://www.jazzisdead.com/tour.htm". Jazz Mandolin Project <Burlington, VT> (a,BA) They are very pro-taping and now (1/99) allow BA once again, but you are more likely to be given BA at a small venue with only one or two tapers around the board. As always get there early and BE POLITE! It wouldn't hurt if you made them a copy of the show either. They still let you set up your mikes in the sweet spot. Of course, mic stands have a lot to do with the venue. Their URL is: "http://www.netspace.org/jmp". Jefferson Starship <San Francisco, CA> (a,v,BA) They allow BA when available. Mic stands are used all the time. Video taping is fine as long as the venue allows it. There is lots of trading on their mailing list, which is at: "2400FULTON@NETSPACE.ORG". Their website is at: "http://www.jeffersonstarship.com". Jeff Sipe (AKA Apt. Q-258) <Atlanta, GA> (a,v) They encourage DAT taping! Jenn Wertz & Lovechild <Pittsburgh, PA> (a) Taping policy is still unclear, but they have been enthusiastic about taper requests in the past. Be sure to talk to Jenn Wertz first, and let her know how she can get a copy. BA may be venue-dependent. Permission may be required for DAT. Mic stands OK if they do not obstruct the view of others. For more info, check out their website at: "http://www.angelfire.com/pa/Lovechild" or email at <gamb1t18@erols.com>. Jerry Douglas <?> (a) Jerry, who is currently playing w/Tim O'Brien and Maura O'Connell, has a sound engineer who is VERY picky about mic stands in seats. At Davidson College in Nov, 1998, he insisted the taper not block ANYONE's view or he'd be forced to move or take down entirely. 10 minutes prior to the show, after having been setup, and ready to go, he was forced to move and set up again near the console area. Be sure to be careful where and how you setup, as the soundman mentioned growing more frustrated with tapers and was considering discontinuing taping this tour due to several other people who frustrated him. Even though the taper tried to be nice after he moved, the soundman was still angry. His shows tend to run around 1:55:00. Jerry Joseph & the Jackmormons <?> (a,BA) Jerry (formerly of Little Women and author of Widespread Panic's "Climb to Safety") actively encourages audience taping and board patches when his soundman Steve is working. Check http://www.ipeg.com/~kbender/jm.html for tour dates. Jess Klein <Rochester, NY> (a) DAUD OK, ask about SBD access. Video policy unclear, but she's friendly, just ask. *Jesus Lizard <Chicago, IL> (a,v,BA) Although I previously reported that they disallowed taping in Minneapolis in 7/98, it appears that was an exception and they definitely allow all types of audience taping. Board access is becoming more frequent, but needs permission by soundperson. Stands are allowed with clearance from the soundperson. Video taping is not so warmly welcomed by band, but requires permission ahead of time. If using any type of rig or stand it is helpful to be there at time of load in, and get permission. The JGB Band <San Francisco, CA> (a,BA) They definitely allow aud taping, barring any venue restrictions. Check with the venue first and if they give you trouble, ask them to contact the band. They have a new soundman and have recently (1/99) started allowing BA and the soundman appreciates it if you send him a clone. Jiggle The Handle <Boston, MA> (a,v,BA) They encourage audio and video taping and allow BA if you show up early and talk to either Larry, their new sound & light engineer or Chuck, their Merchandise man & Archivist, but it depends on the venue and how good the board sounds there. Their website is: "http://www.jigglethehandle.com" If further questions, you can contact Larry at <ltlg@mindless.com>. *Jimmie's Chicken Shack <Annapolis, MD> (a,v,BA) Arrive early and speak to Drew, their merchandise man, Double D (guitarist) or Che Lemon (bass player) for permission to tape. Board access and video may be venue-dependent. See Jamie, their soundman, for a board patch or video. Their website is: "http://www.fowl.com" Jimmy Clinton & The Mean Red Spiders <Marietta, OH> (a,BA) For BA you must clear it with the soundman before the show. Jim's Big Ego <Boston, MA> AKA Jim Infantino <Boston, MA> (he does a bunch of solo gigs) (a) DAUD OK, video and SBD policy unclear. They've always been very permissive and friendly - just ask. You can find their webpage at: "http://www.bigego.com" Jim White <NYC> (a,BA) Just talk to him before the show. He's tall & always has a cowboy hat on. J.J. Cale <Oklahoma City, OK> (a). J.J. doesn't seem to mind if folks tape him, but this may be venue-dependent. Joe Gallant's Illuminati <NYC> (a,BA) Taping is encouraged. They have a mixer separate from the PA board for your taping pleasure. Mics always welcome. They play Grateful Dead music arranged for big band and tend to play mostly in NYC and SF. Email them at <Gallant@panix.com>. John Scofield <Katonah, NY> (a) occasional BA. No video. John would like to receive copies of all shows that are taped, and they can be sent to: John Scofield, 194 Katonah Ave., Box 189, Katonah, NY 10536. For further questions, his email is <sco4it@aol.com>. John Southworth <Toronto, Ontario, Canada> (a,BA) Will allow aud and BA, but you need to talk to his manager, Campbell Webster beforehand. He'll probably want a copy. John Wesley Harding <San Francisco, CA> (a) Johny Vegas <?> (a,BA) They encourage taping and trading. Their video policy needs clarifying. Check out their website at: "http://www.johnyvegas.com/" Jonas Hellborg <Sweden> (a,v) They encourage DAT taping! The Jongleurs <Miami, FL> (a) Very pro-taping. BA depends on venue soundman. Jorma Kaukonen Trio/Solo (from Hot Tuna) <?, OH> (a,BA) He has allowed DAUD and BA at several recent (1/99) shows. No Video allowed. He is encouraging any and all tapers to tape him at the upcoming Suwannee SpringFest in Live Oak, FL on 3/26-28! Joseph Arthur <?> (a) Will allow aud taping, sometimes BA too. Josh Smith & The Frost <?, FL> (a,v) They allow daud and video as long as you talk to Josh before the show. BA is venue dependent. If you have any problems, ask for Joel Smith, Josh's dad and manager. Juggling Suns <New Brunswick, NJ> (a,BA) DAT BA OK. This is a new incarnation of the now defunct band " Solar Circus," whose lead guitarist and vocalist, Mark Diomidi, is the leader of this new band. They are very pro-taping and play tons of original Solar tunes, as well as some Grateful Dead, JGB, etc. DAT BA or mics are very welcome. Ask soundman, Rodger, for a patch. Jump Little Children <Charleston, SC> (a) They are now aud & daud only. They no longer allow video or BA. They will ask you to send them a copy of your tape. Mike stands OK. See an explanation of their new taping policy at "http://www.jumplittlechildren.com" Jumpsuit Jerry <Weymouth, MA> (a) Venue restrictions notwithstanding, they are very pro-taping. BA depends on the venue soundman. Before bringing your mic stand, email Doug at <SmallPaul7@aol.com> so the band will be expecting it. Otherwise, handhelds are fine. The band wants you to send them a copy if possible. Any further questions can be answered at the above email address. June of 44 <Chicago,IL> (a,v) They allow daud, video and mic stands. Ask for Jeff Mueller before the show and he'll hook you up. BA? They appreciate a copy. June Rich <Philadelphia, PA> (a) DAUD OK, video and SBD policy unclear. You can find her webpage at: "http://www.voicenet.com/~junerich" Junky Southern <Dallas, TX> (a) This cowpunk/new country band is actively in negotiation w/EMI as of 2/99. DAUD okay, but video and DSBD only w/ prior permission. *Jupiter Coyote <Macon, GA> (a,v,BA) They have a new soundman and no longer require permission to tape. They have the most friendly taping policy of any band you've ever seen. Not only do they allow sound board patches (you need to get there early), they also run their own DAT at each show and will make you copies of shows if you get a hold of them and send them blank tapes. You contact the band at "http://www.jupitercoyote.com". KAI KLN <Sacramento, CA> (a) It is always possible to tape them with your mics. BA may also be possible if you contact them ahead of time at <aloper@earthlink.net>. They ask you to send them a copy at: KAI KLN, P.O. Box 566, Carmichael, CA 95609. Hotline is at: (916) 334-1985. *Karl Denson's Tiny Universe <San Diego, CA> (a,BA) A sidecar project of the Greyboy Allstars, they openly encourage taping. Ask for Brian Groves, their road manager, if you run into any problems. He can be reached at <brian@20thcongress.com>. Keller Williams <Steamboat Springs, CO> (a,BA) Kelly's Heroes <New Orleans, LA> (a,BA) for BA, ask Lance or Josh early. Kenny Blue Ray <Menlo Park, CA> (a,BA) This musician, who does Stevie Ray Vaughan and Elmore James covers as well as his own blues numbers, allows daud and DAT BA, but aks him for permission first at "http://home.earthlink.net/~blueray/". He would really appreciate a CD clone or cassette copy of the show. Kevin So <Boston, MA> (a) DAUD OK, video and SBD policy unknown. Someone at his merch table indicated that he really appreciates the efforts of traders spreading the word. Kicking Harold <Tempe, AZ> (a,v) Band members don't mind taping if venue has no problem with it. Kickstand Travolta <London, Ontario, Canada> (a) Sadly, they broke up and formed a new band called Fly Fantastic. See their entry. Kilgore <?> (a,v,BA) They are not real good about informing venues, so if you want to do video or a board, talk to the band/tour manager ahead of time. Kilgore Trout <Seattle, WA> (a) Mic stands OK. For BA, you must ask the soundman that night. If you have problems, ask to talk to someone in the band (like Linder or Dan Moore) and they'll let you. Their website is at: "http://www.kilgoretrout.com". Kilmo and The Jazz-Blues Project <So FL> (a,v,BA) DAT OK. Contact # = (954) 568-0175. Ask early for a board patch. King Black Acid & The Womb Star Orchestra <Portland, OR> (a,v,BA) SBD OK but won't sound as good as running mikes or a SBD/AUD mix. Fully taper friendly, just don't get in the way and "don't shackle anyone's buzz" and you'll be allowed to do pretty much whatever you want. Kojikiri <Charlotte, NC> (a,v) They allow daud and video, but no BA for now. All they ask is that you don't get in the way of the audience and that you buy their CD. DAT is encouraged and they will help you find a good spot to tape from. Their website is at: "http://www.crosswinds.net/charlotte/~kojikiri/home.html". If you have any questions, direct them to: <skinner_john@furman.edu> or <kojikiri@charlotte.crosswinds.net>. Komeda <?> (a) Depending on who they are touring with, they allow taping. In early '98 with Ivy, no taping was allowed, but later in '98 with His Name is Alive, daud was allowed next ot the board. BA? Kristin Hersh <Providence, RI> (a,BA) This musician, formerly of the now defunct band Throwing Muses, has been allowing soundboard taping; just talk to her husband and manager, Billy O and he'll help you out. The Kudzu Kings <Oxford, MS> (a) BA is often possible if you get their permission prior to the show. If you have any questions, contact Frank at <frankg@watervalley.net>. *KVHW <San Rafael, CA> (a,v) DAT aud OK. No BA. Video OK. Mic stands OK, but stage mic'ing is strictly by permission only. Don't video the soundcheck. The band is: Steve Kimock, lead guitar; Bobby Vega, bass; Ray White, rhythm guitar & vocals; Alan Hertz, drums. They are very nice to tapers. Just talk to Chris first and he'll be real accommodating! Lake Trout <Baltimore, MD> (a,BA) Speak with Matt, the sax/flute/keyboardist, or talk to Steve, the bands soundman, for further info. Their webpage is: "http://www.sbachman.com/laketrout" Lambchop <Nashville, TN> (a,BA) Talk to Kurt, the lead singer, if there's any problems. Lancaster Bombers <?, Australia> (a,v) Talk to Alan or their manager before the show. Larry <Austin, TX> (a,BA) DAT aud and DAT BA OK. They play Colorado all the time. Laura Love <?> (a) DAUD OK, SBD and video policy unclear. Great band of friendly people - ask about taping. They've allowed it in the past on several occasions. Lazy Cowgirls <LA, CA> (a) Talk to Pat Dodd. These guys aren't as scary as they look. Left Hand Jack <Baton Rouge, LA> (a,BA) For BA, ask early. Leftover Salmon <Boulder, CO> (a,BA) They fought hard with their new record label to keep taping and still allow DAT BA. They deserve a lot of credit for sticking up for us. Their soundman, Steve, is very accomodating and provides a very nice board feed. The Leftover Salmon discussion list is at: <leftover@lists.colorado.edu>. You can subscribe to it at: <listproc@lists.colorado.edu>. For further questions about taping policies, etc., contact Marcie at <taz@nowhere.net>. BTW, if LS is in your town, they really appreciate folks lending them their extra set of wheels so they don't have to take the tour bus to go one mile down the road for a 6-pack. Their new webpage is at: "http://www.leftoversalmon.com/" Lenny Kaye <?> (a) Patti Smith's long-time guitarist, he doesn't mind tapers or even bootleggers and feels that they allow a band to put out music that might have technical flaws or mistakes, but also things of interest, without worrying about being responsible for such releases. For further information, see the 2/98 issue of Live! Magazine, Music Review section. Leon Russell <?> His taping policy is tentatively "no see, no enforce," after a fellow taper taped him in VA with a mic stand 15' from the stage in plain view and was not stopped. More info needed. Less Than Jake <Gainesville, FL> (a) The FAQ on their website http://www.lessthanjake.com/ states that they do allow daud taping. Video? BA? Let's Go Bowling <Fresno, CA> (a,BA) For BA, ask Tom Mattot early. *Little Feat <Los Angeles, CA> (a,BA) They are now encouraging DAUD and BA and have endorsed a continuous tape tree. Jerry Manuel, their sound engineer, Denny Jones, their road manager, and Roz, their monitor man, are very helpful getting tapers set up. If Jerry doesn't have the single XLR board patch available, you may have to get a line out of Jerry's SV-255, which has a mini digital output. Get there early! If Jerry does not see any tapers, he won't put out the patch. You will most likely have to sneak your equipment in to the venue. They often play one long 2:15 set. See http://www.dmci.com/~hoyhoy/tapers.html to arrange for trades or e-mail Ian L Hughes <hughsoid@ozemail.com.au> to inquire about joining the tape tree. Finally, they now (4/99) have the usenet group "rec.music.artists.little-feat" through which trades may be arranged. Little Sister <Dallas, TX> (a,BA) See "Sister 7" (name change) +LIVE+ <York, PA> They have very strong anti-taping sentiments, as reported in DAT-Heads #261, Vol #3. Tapers beware! *Liz Phair <Winnetka, IL> Although she doesn't officially allow taping, her former drummer, Brad Wood, and soundman have said that Liz really doesn't care, and would even be flattered, as long as it's "nothing approaching professional and we can't see it." Los Lobos <Los Angeles, CA> (a,BA) Los Lobos does indeed allow DAT BA & DAT aud taping. Louie, the soundman gives out a single XLR or coax patch, no patch bay, so a chain is necessary. Mic stands OK as long as they are low, near the soundboard and out of the way of other patrons. If you have problems getting your equipment in or setting up should ask for Louie Stetzel, their soundman, the road manager or the head of security. Louie and the sax player, Steve Berlin, love to get copies of tapes. They are much better now at informing the venues of their pro-taping policy, but the head of security is not always perfect at informing his workers. Love/Hate <?> (a,v) The lead singer and lead guitarist have gone on record as being cool with aud and video taping. BA? Madball <NYC> (a,v) Ask ahead of time for a video pass and they'll likely put you on the guest list too. Magpu <Dallas, TX> (a,v,BA) A mixture of King Crimson meets Zappa & beats up on James Brown, with this band, anything goes! You bring the multi-tracks, they'll allow it! However, feeds to the remote truck are discouraged. ;) Major Lingo <Phoenix, AZ> (a,BA) DAT BA but ask soundman first. Manchild <Miami, FL> (a) Ask D. Brown, lead guitar player, for permission. DAT OK. Video possible. No board access. Manic Mule <Philadelphia, PA> (a,v,BA) This jam band encourages trading and offers sound board patches. They will allow video with prior consent as well. If you wanna check 'em out they can be found at "http://www.manicmule.com". Man or Astroman <?, GA> (a,v) They allow aud video and aud DAT but no BA because in their estimation it doesn't sound as good. Mic stands are venue-dependent. Photos OK. Marcy Playground <?> (a,v) Mark Eitzel <SF, CA> (a) Very unpredictable. Sometimes allows BA, sometimes won't even allow aud taping, so take nothing for granted. But even if he does allow BA, its usually better to tape him with mics, as he often talks/sings to the audience without a mic. Marc Ribot/Los Cubanos Postizos <NYC> (a,v) Mark, who has a band called "Los Cubanos Postizos", doesn't care about audio or video taping. He never has his own sound man though, so BA is not likely (he usually plays small clubs like the Knitting Factory anyways). Marshwiggles <Cincinnati, OH> (a) The Marshwiggles are no longer a band as of 7/98. Thom Scarecrow the Dave Wolfenberger Band are two new bands that have formed from various members of the Marshwiggles. Both bands are incredibly nice to tapers. Their website is at: "http://Bluejordan.com". Martin Zellar <Minneapolis, MN> (a), no see, no enforce policy. Mary Lou Lord <Seattle, WA> (a,BA) If you ask her before the show for a board feed and explain that it's just for your listening pleasure, she'll most likely allow you to patch in or tape with your mics. Max Creek <Collinsville, CT> (a) They always allow taping unless there are special circumstances that prevent it (which is extremely rare). BA is generally available, space permitting. Their concert hotline is (203) 653-7616 or write to them at P.O. Box 198, Collinsville, CT 06022 to contact the band. Their web site, which includes a tape trading message board, is "http:www.moonsite.com/maxcreek/" Meat Puppets <?, AZ> (a) BA if Dave, their soundman is in the right mood. Medeski, Martin & Wood <Boston/NYC> (a) They do not allow BA, but daud is allowed from ANYWHERE in the venue, provided that you are respectful and venue personnel have no problem with your mic stand location. Venue security have the final say on where mic stands are allowed. DATs, MDs and Cass are ALL allowed. No AC power provided. Please don't ask for a board patch; they are not allowed. No video; videos will be confiscated. If you tape their show, PLEASE send them a DAT clone/copy at: MMW Archives, c/o Federico Cribiore, P.O. Box 311, Closter, NY 07624-0311. Liz Penta, their manager, has said that they almost NEVER receive tapes of their shows. Their new official website is at: "http://www.mmw.net". Brian Whitman's MMW webpage (containing some resources the official page doesn't) is at: "http://www.netspace.org/mmw". Melanie Sparks <Greenville, NC> (a,BA) but no DAT aud or BA; ana aud & BA OK. *Merle Fest <Wilkesboro, NC> (a) This bluegrass festival, named after the late Merle Watson, is held in Wilkesboro, NC during the last weekend of April. Taping is allowed at all stages, if not in policy than at least in actions. A special taper's ticket can be obtained if you want to tape from the taping section; for more info, call 800-343-7857 or at "http://www.merlefest.org". In practice, they don't ask you for such a taper's ticket at the gate to be able to get your equipment in and they generally don't hassle you while FOB taping if you keep your mic stand low and out of other people's way and if you're polite to others. Merle Saunders & The Rainforest Band <San Francisco, CA> (a) Due to his new Live CD, Merle is not allowing BA or video of any kind at this time, but there's no problem with (DAT) aud recordings with a mic stand. Both Boots, the road manager and Edwin, the soundman will tell you no if you ask for BA or video. The Mermen <San Francisco, CA> (a,BA) BA is venue-dependent. Metallica <San Francisco, CA> (a,v) Taping tickets available on the regular on-sale date. No equipment allowed in without such a taper ticket. Mic stands are generally not welcome however. The entire Load tour has had a taping section near the stage, with tickets being sold via regular ticketmaster outlets. However, ticket salespeople are often clueless as to the existence of taper tickets and it's often safer to get them from the box office. These do sell out quickly. Michael Ray & The Cosmic Krewe <VT/New Orleans, LA> (a) BA? Michael & Krewe are open to daud taping. Their BA/video policy is unknown. Mike Keneally/Beer For Dolphins <San Diego, CA> (a,v) Mike Keneally encourages his fans to tape and trade his music, both audio and video. He naturally asks that no one profit monetarily from such recordings and asks that you send him a copy at: P.O. Box 927605, San Diego, CA 92192-7605. Their guitar tech, Thomas would appreciate patching out of your setup with his minidisk. For more details on his taping policy, see: "http://www.moosenet.com/keneally27.html". Mike Watt <San Pedro, CA> (a,v) likes aud tapers and allows video too. Millencolin <Durebro, Sweden> (v) allow video-taping, possibly aud too. Minglewood <Dallas, TX> (a,v,BA) DAUD, video or SBD OK. Check w/the venue & the resident tapers before a full-scale assault, but whatever happens, happens. Used to be a Dead cover band, now almost all originals. The Miracle Orchestra <Boston, MA> (a,v,BA) The encourage aud, video and BA, with the only stipulation being that if you tape them, please contact a member of the band about getting/trading a copy of the show with the band's official archiver, Jason. You can contact Jason via email at <truffela@tiac.net>. The band's website is at: "http://users.aol.com/miracleorc". The Misfits <Vernon, NJ> (a) The band members allow aud taping, but their manager, Rocky, is against it. Check with one of the band members (Michael, Jerry, Doyle or Chud) before attempting to get your stuff in the place if security is tight. Their snail mail address is: Misfits Fiend Club, P.O. Box 310, Vernon, NJ 07462. Email them at: <FIENDCLUB@aol.com>. Their webpage can be found at: "http://watt.seas.virginia.edu/~msk4m/" *moe. <Albany, NY> (a> Audio taping is allowed at all moe. shows for personal, non-commercial, home use only. Video and BA are no longer allowed as of 8/99. They ask that you bring your own mics and deck. Please stay out of the way of the working crew at all venues. Steve Young, their new FoH soundman, is currently allowing ONE mic stand to be set up in front of the board. Three pairs of mics will be allowed to be set up on the stand, then lots of folks can patch out of each of the three setups. As long as this doesn't get out of control all will be fine. If mic stands get set up in front of the light board then the front of soundboard stand goes away. Be nice to Chris Ragan, the lighting director. In particular, please do not set up your mic stands in the "sweet" spot without checking first with Chris. He continues to be frustrated with newbies setting up mic stands directly in the way of his line of sight. If you see someone setting up a stand right in front of his lighting board, please explain to him kindly and gently the policy of not impeding his line of sight. It's also wise to set up your mics 5-10' from the soundboard, as the soundman and the lightman tend to talk to each other a lot during the show, which can come out on your tape. Some things that are never allowed at moe. shows are: camcorders, large mixers, reel-to-reel, home decks, long extension cords, etc. They ask you to cooperate with them so they can continue to provide as cozy a taping environment for everyone as possible. For further info, contact Steve Young, their Front of House Audio Engineer/Production Manager at <moe767@aol.com>. Check out their web site at: "http://www.moe.org/" which includes info about their new taping policy, tour dates, how to subscribe to their fan-based mailing list, how to contact the band, etc. BTW, their Road Manager is Ken "Scippi" Richman. Mono Puff <Brooklyn, NY> (a) DAUD OK, video and SBD policy unknown. This is John Flansburgh's (of TMBG) side project. John gave permission to tape and trade a couple recent NYC shows. He seems very open to the idea of non-profit trading to spread the word. Send him a copy! Moon Boot Lover <Woodstock, NY> (a,BA) Morgans <Wilkes-Barre, PA> (a,v,BA) They allow everything, but soundboard taping may not be there if no outputs are available. You can write to the band at: Morgans, P.O. Box 1571 Plains, PA 18705. You can email Jay Morgans at <blueboywb@aol.com>; Jesse Morgans at <bareknkles@aol.com>. For BA, talk to the band before the show and they'll make it easier for you than going straight to the club's soundman. Video is possible, but ask Thierry, the drummer, or any of the other band members, beforehand. They're really cool and love meeting fans. If you want to give them a copy, they can even arrange a trade for some of their other shows. Their webpage is at: "http://www.aei.ca/~funkers". The Mother Hips <Chico, CA> (a,BA) In addition to having an open attitude toward daud taping, they also allow board patches if the venue is OK with it. Motley Crue <?> (a,v) Their recent pro-taping stance has been confirmed in a interview with Webnoize. Tommy Lee has stated that you can audio or video tape them from your seat. He encourages everyone to go home with a video/audio memory of the show. His label is cool with this stance. Taping is for personal use, not profit. Mountain Express Band <Columbia, SC> (a,BA) They allow BA and DAUD. Moxy Fruvous <Toronto, Ontario, Canada> (a) Although venue-dependent, if you get there early and talk to the band, they'll usually let you tape them. They only ask that the tape be for your own personal use and that it not be treed. For further info, email the band directly at <moxy@passport.ca>. Mr. Blotto <Chicago, IL> (a,BA) BA if you go to venue early and talk to their lead guitar player and soundman, Bob Mu330 <St. Louis, MO> (a,BA) DAT OK. Nels Cline <Santa Monica, CA> (a,v,BA) tapers can sometimes sit on the stage. Neutral Milk Hotel <Athens,NY> (a,v) They are very taper friendly. No BA. The Newcastle Boys <Charlotte, NC> (a,BA) They love tapers and would love a copy of the show. The New Meanies <Winnipeg, Canada> (a,BA) Formerly the Canadian Blue Meanies, they are now with Virgen Canada, so their taping policy may change. Check out their web site at: "http://www.mbnet.mb.ca/freepress/MEANIES.html" New Model Army <Bradford, UK> (a) Their video and BA policy needs clarfying. They, like Ween, aren't real good about letting the venues know about their taping policy, so venue restrictions definitely apply. New Riders of the Purple Sage <Larkspur, CA> (a) BA often possible if you get there ahead of time and speak to a band member. The Next Step <Washington DC> (a) They enthusiastically encourage taping. The Nields <Northampton, MA> (a) DAUD OK, but no SBD access as a rule. Video policy unknown. They're really friendly folks - just ask. Old Dead Bug <San Jose CA> (a,v,BA) This high-energy band allows BA, given enough time to for them to deal with it, as well as video. They generally recommend audience taping, as the board is often merely re-enforcing the stage sound, and may not provide an adequate mix. *Old 97s <Dallas, TX> (a,v,BA) Regarding taping, anything goes. Some times the venue tries to be pushy about taping but the band usually gets their way. They have no trouble with board taping, especially now that they've been adding reverb digitally. Their website is at: "http://www.old97s.com". Olivia Tremor Control <Athens, GA> (a) They very much encourage daud taping and have been known to invite tapers to hang out with them after the show so they can hear your tape. Ombre Players <?, NY> (a) taping is encouraged. Ominous Seapods <Albany, NY> (a,v,BA) DAT and analog taping is welcome for SBD and AUD. For a SBD patch, please arrive early enough to ensure a spot in line. Speak to the Front Of House engineer Marty Racine ahead of time before plugging in. All SBD patches are on a first-some first-serve basis. In the near future, we will have a SBD/AUD Mix with an accessible patch bay. AC power may not be accessible, so bring your battery packs and own cables if possible. BA will not be allowed if the SBD patch is not good and/or the mix is not suitable. Always bring microphones for aud taping as a backup. Check out the OS website at: "http://www.netspace.org/seapods" for current tour schedule, taping connections and lists of past shows available. His website is at: "http://www.nilerecords.com" Other Half <NYC> (a,BA) *Ozric Tentacles <London, England> (a) OT no longer allows BA, saying that "too many people are making CD-Rs and selling them." However, taping with mics is still allowed, especially in the US, although in the UK low-key stealth is usually the rule due to venue restrictions. If you want to be first or second out, you need to get there early. Offering to make the band a copy is a good gesture. Venue restrictions may apply. Skavengers Punk Rock Ensemble <New Orleans, LA> (a,BA) For BA, ask Ryan. Skeleton Key <NYC> (a,v) BA also possible, but venue-dependent. Skin <Boulder, CO> (a) Taping is encouraged. Their web site, with all their upcoming concert dates as well as the Shockra archives, is at: "http://www.indra.com/~edwin/" The archives contain a list of all their live DAT recordings since 1991, which are available to the public. Skin plays in Boulder, CO, alternating between the Fox Th. and the Boulder Th. every 5-6 weeks. If you want to tape them at the Boulder Th., please call the theatre's production manager (Glen) first, to secure permission. The phone number there is (303) 786-7030 ext. 3. Sonic Garden <Buffalo, NY> (a,BA) This Grateful Dead cover band allows daud taping at their shows. Mic stands OK. The soundman typically brings a DAT recorder, and will allow people to connect to his DAT if they have cables. The bass player usually records onto hi-fi videotape from the board as well, so stereo RCA cables can go into the back of that if you get there early enough. Remember, you need to bring your own cables! Check out their website at: "http://www.freeyellow.com/sonic" Sonic Youth <NYC> (a,v) They no longer allow BA, but apparently still allow daud and video. Soulhat <Austin?, TX> (a) Last time, I reported to you that Soulhat was defunct and changed their name to Shat Records. Here's the latest scoop: they are still playing under the name Soulhat, but are now a three-piece band without Bill Cassis, but have the same lead vocals, bass and drums. Kevin, the lead singer, doesn't like the sound of soundboard tapes from small venues, so don't expect BA at most small places. He is cool about taping, if you have mics. Their manager, Martin, appreciates copies. Steve Wynn <NYC> (a,v,BA) He encourages all types of taping, subject to venue permission and rules of course. Although he won't necessarily request one from you, he and the band would appreciate a copy of your tape. Talk to Kevin Browning, their soundman, who will get you set up just fine. *Uncle John's Band <Tampa, FL> (a,v,BA) This dead cover band encourages all forms of taping. Apparently they are not too good about informing venues of their pro-taping policy, so good luck getting your equipment past the door. Ween has a pretty big following of tape traders & a substantial web presence in MP3 trading. This comes mainly from their direct involvement in releasing outtakes on the web as well as allowing taping at shows. Ween can be contacted directly at <deaner@tradenet.net>. The 'official' site maintained by the band, namely Mickey (Dean), is "http://www.chocodog.com/ween/". *The Why Store <Bloomington, IN> (a) DAUD OK, occasionally BA permitted. For exception requests, contact Brian, their live recording engineer, whose email address is <brianab@vnd.tek.com>. There is no real tapers section, but aud tapers are encouraged to set up their stands in a place where it won't inconvenience other. Aud taping is encouraged! No video or flash cameras. FYI, this band is very nice to us tapers and will work with you to give you the best damn tape possible. If you are caught taping, the band will stop playing until someone comes down there and breaks your tape." She is VERY anti-taping. Ani DiFranco <?> At a local Ani show in Spring 1998, a fellow taper arrived at the venue a few hours early and sought out her road manager to ask about mic stand/board patch possibilities. He was met with nothing short of _ANGER_ the guy nearly lunged at him and started yelling in rage about their No Taping policy. They have been known to confiscate non-recording walkman decks and are VERY aggressive about busting tapers. Although it may be humanly possible to procure prior permission, it is a very long and cumbersome process and is not worth it. Barenaked Ladies <Toronto, Ontario, Canada> Their management company is *very* anti-taping, so tapers beware! However, if you're able to stealth them, the band members are OK with it. Ben Harper <?> Ben's management group is very against taping and doesn't allow it at all, but Ben himself has said that if you get your equipment in, he personally has nothing against you taping him. Stealth is required. Security has been busting tapers left and right on his most recent tour. Beth Orton <?> When a taper recently asked her tour manager if he could tape, the answer was a big "NO". *Better Than Ezra <New Orleans,LA> They are very anti-taping if you show up just before showtime and ask to tape, so tapers beware! However, recently (9/99) the bassist and drummer told a fellow taper that taping them is possible if you show up during soundcheck and make your case known. Otherwise, the tour manager will take your equipment and you won't get it back until after the show. Blur <?> Blur is very anti-taping and anti-trading. They have an "anti-piracy unit" investigating bootleg material, and they are strongly against taping. Their lawyers have stated that even trading is condemned. BEWARE OF BLUR! Bob Dylan <?> As is well known, you tape at your own risk at Dylan shows and it seems that 10-20 tapers are busted at each of his shows. Bob Mould <NYC, NY> (a) His former band, Sugar, is now defunct. He is no longer allowing taping of any kind at his shows. Spread the word. Burning Spear <?> This reggae band does not allow taping unless you offer the band and the manager the funky stuff (for real). A soundman at a recent show allowed a friend of his to patch into the board (DAT) with no problems. At the same show a fellow taper asked the manager if he could record w/mics and he said "No taping man" If the manager doesn't know, there may be a chance you can tape them, especially since the lead singer is reported to be taper friendly. However, it appears that their management has a no taping policy. Carolines Spine <?> The band is ok with it but the tour manager and label are VERY anti taping. Cheap Trick <Rockford, IL> They absolutely do NOT allow taping. The only time they ever allowed it was when they toured with Motley Crue, who allows it. The band's policy is, and always was - NO TAPING ALLOWED. And, that goes for video as well as audio. Coal Chamber <?,CA> Being Managed by Sharon Ozbourne (Ozzy's wife) means you'll be pitched from the venue if caught. Creed <?> They used to allow "underground tape trading" before they were signed to Virgin. They personally don't care if you tape them, but due to contractual obligations, they can't give you permission to do so. The present situation is "no see, no enforce." The Cure <?> Although the band has said in interviews that they don't mind taping, they never seem to communicate this to the venues. Thus, the policy at the door will invariably be "no taping." *The Dance Hall Crashers <Berkeley, CA> Although it was previously reported here that they allow taping, a recent email reply from Gavin, their lead singer, has revealed that in fact they are not cool with it and fear it will end up in bootlegging. David Lindley <?> He allows no audio or video recording of his concerts in great part because of his very strong anti-bootlegging stand. However, Dan Mahoney, who's been in charge of busting David's tapers over the last 12 years, has stated that if he sees a tape- head who is obviously taping for his own personal stash, he never hassles them. He busts those whose equipment looks too "pro." It is unclear what criteria the uses to draw this distinction. The feeling that many tapers have gotten is that Dan values David's music and sees the need for it to be documented on DAT, but isn't at liberty to come out and openly encourage it out of respect for David's negative feelings on the subject. David Wilcox <Black Mtn, NC> While he appreciates tapers showing an interest in his music, he has an audio archivist touring with him and doesn't want additional folks to tape him. Deftones <Sacramento, CA> The band and manager are cool about taping and tapers but the record label says no. It's stealth or nothing. Diamanda Galas <?> She has a very beautiful road manager who does not like tapers and who is aware of DAT and analog decks-she will not fall for the extra tape you carry just for such eventualities! She will also ask for the DAT tape that you carefully hid under your jacket! Believe it or not, this happened at probably the most taper friendly place in the world, the Knitting Factory in NYC. Doo Rag <Tuscon, AZ> Digiphobes. They *might* allow analog taping, if the gear is primitive enough to meet their standards. They claim they've recorded some of their own shows directly to vinyl with a record-cutting lathe. Dream Theater <Long Island, NY> Although their drummer is into taping, their lead guitarist and singer are not, so their official policy is "no taping." Duke Rollibard <?> It'll be a mistake if you ask Duke if he allows taping, as he will most likely tell you, in a very beligerent tone "absolutely not", as well as threaten to throw you out and take your tape away if he catches you taping. Beware! Faithless <?, England> When asked what their taping policy was, their tour manager was very polite, but said that in no way would they allow taping because it would probably be bootlegged right away. Gary Primich <?> He thinks that tapers don't buy his albums and for this reason he has an attitude about taping. George Clinton & PFunk <?> His soundman has gone on record as saying that he doesn't allow taping of any kind and will even take away cameras if he sees them. Their Sony rep is even worse. *Godsmack <?> Will confiscate equipment if found. Very anti-taping. 1999. Great Big Sea <Newfoundland> They've indicated that they don't want substandard hissy recordings to serve as an introduction of their music to new listeners. They therefore do not allow taping. If you happen to stealth them and get a great recording of a great show, consider sending them a copy to convince them that not all tapes sound as bad as they think: "http://www.greatbigsea.com" Happy Apple <St. Paul, MN> No taping, they believe it hurts sales and do not want any unauthorized recordings in anyone's hands. They also claim that their current record label is very anti-taping. They will bust you if they see you taping. House of Blues <various places> They are a group of blues bands that tour together each year, with the '98 lineup featuring Buddy Guy, Blind Boys of Alabama and Billy Boy Arnold. Their taping policy is simply "NO TAPING". Expect a thorough search at the door, even at normally low-key venues. Indigo Girls <?> Although they have gone as record in the past as saying that they don't mind aud taping and tape trading (but disallow video, BA or mic stands), their FOH, Michele, has recently said that they no longer allow taping of any kind. Further clarification is needed from the band members themselves. Iris Dement <?> Iris does NOT like tapers and does NOT like being taped. She doesn't enjoy knowing she's being taped, period. She doesn't actively seek them out, but would rather not know. Before some shows, there's an announcement not to take photos or tape her. Jamiroquai <London, UK> The group's label, WORK, is against all taping, but there is a good number of stealth tapers at most of their concerts. Their website is: "http://www.jamiroquai.co.uk/" Jayhawks <Minneapolis, MN> Their soundman is a nice guy, but will tell you flat-out that they do not allow taping. They are worried that a bootleg CD will get out. However, recently a few tapers have talked to the band before the show and have been allowed BA, but your mileage may differ. Jewel <San Diego, CA> Although it was reported in a past update of this list that she now allows audience taping, this has in fact turned out to be misinformation. She still does NOT allow taping. It is true, though, that open tape trading does occur on the mailing list. This occurs because it is among list members only. Check out "http://www.spectra.net/~ducksoup/" for more info. Joan Jett <?> Very Anti-Taping! Posts large signs before the show detailing her stance. Will even threaten to take your taping equipment away if caught. Watch out! Jonathon Richman <?> He hates being taped, but only because he feels you cannot get the full concert experience from a tape compared to watching him. For the same reason, he doesn't like it when radio stations broadcast his concerts. *John Prine <?> He and his management DO NOT allow taping. John Zorn (Masada, Cobra, all other projects) <NYC> He is VERY anti-taping and anti-picture-taking. He actively seeks out tapers, so it's best to avoid talking to other known tapers, as it may give you away. Josh Redman <?> It appears that he is NOT taper friendly; he was one of the guests at DJ Logic's LOGIC PROJECT at the Knit (3/99) and for the set Redman guested on, no taping was specifically requested. King Crimson <UK> Robert Fripp is very anti-taping, they have been known to use metal detectors at the door to catch tapers, as well as turn the house lights on at the 45min. mark to catch anyone flipping their tapes. By contrast, Belew doesn't seem to mind and the other band members could care less. Levon Helm <Turkey Scratch, Arkansas> After an intial report that he allows taping, it has since been reported that he himself refused to allow very polite folks to tape his concert in NY. Until further notice, assume he has a no taping policy. Limp Bizkit <Jacksonville FL> VERY anti taping. Their tour manager Nick looks for tapers and will grab tapes and batteries. Maceo Parker <?> His men apparently search out tapers, so discretion is advised. Several tapers have been busted at his shows. Mark Eitzel <SF, CA> (a) Very unpredictable. Sometimes allows BA, sometimes won't even allow aud taping, so take nothing for granted. Merrie Amsterburg <?> On 2/99, Merrie answered a fan's email request to tape her shows by saying: "As far as recording the live shows, Q Division Records would rather not have you do it. Sorry." Michael Hedges <?> RIP, Michael. Michelle Shocked <?> Her management/record company seems to be strongly against taping and has put up strongly worded signs prohibiting it at all the entrances of venues normally allowing it. It appears she lost a legal battle against a European bootlegger and has understandably soured to all tapers. Morcheeba <?>. When a taper recently asked their tour manager if he could tape, the answer was a flat "NO". The Neville Brothers <New Orleans, LA> They used to allow taping, but no longer tolerate it. Stealth is now necessary. Page/Plant <?> Indications are that they are NOT allowing open taping on during the summer '98 tour. Palace (Bros) <?, OH> Will Oldham, the group's leader, has been known to be extremely volatile towards those asking to tape when in a bad mood. Lately he has been saying an emphatic no to both BA and aud when folks have asked. *The Paper Boys (Vancouver, BC, Canada) In spite of the fact that Cam, group's bass/banjo player, is very pro-taping, the band's stated policy is NO TAPING. Chris, their soundman, is also anti-taping. Pitchshifter <U.K.> No taping allowed. PJ Harvey <?> A fellow taper was busted by PJ's management in 11/98 during an in-store free performance at a Virgin Megastore. They went so far as to demand that he erase it in front of them. Although it's not clear if PJ herself is anti-taping, her management certainly is! Preverts <Austin, TX> The band is currently not allow any kind of recording and if the singer catches you taping, he has been known to give you a lot of grief. Check out their website at: "http://www.eden.com/~wallyski" Queensryche <Seattle, WA> They no longer allow taping, which started on their last tour. The webmaster of their fan-page has declared this as their new policy until further notice. Red House Painters <SF, CA> (a) Kozelek is as moody as his hero, Mark Eitzel; unless you have a connection, play it safe and don't be obvious. Reverend Horton Heat <?> Forget about it! The band is cool but "The Reverend" is very anti-taping so the policy is NO TAPING. Richard Thompson <London, UK> He is very against taping and actively enforces his no-taping policy. Tapers beware! *Ritchie Blackmore's Night <?> When they did a short tour in Germany in July, '99, he stopped the show one night when a taper was caught in the act of taping. Richie Havens <?> Unfortunately, Richie is very anti-taping. Robert Cray Band <?> Robert and his band are against taping of any kind. He regularly informs security of his anti-taping policy and many tapers have been busted at this shows. Robert Earl Keen Jr. <Austin, TX> He has switched record labels and can no longer allow taping of any kind. Robert Fripp <?> He is VERY anti-taping and will bust you in a heartbeat if he sees you taping. He makes each venue sign a contract promising that they will put out a big sign saying NO TAPING and another stating that you will be escorted out of the venue if caught with a camera or recording equipment. He has even gone so far as to equate taping with RAPE! Santana <San Francisco, CA> Although Carlos himself has a liberal attitude toward taping, the group's manager is apparently totally against it, so steer clear of him. Sarah McLachlan <Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada> Her soundguy recently duped a fellow taper when he asked for board access. He soundguy apparently said, "Yeah, give me your stuff and I'll plug you in." He then took the guy's batteries and tapes, gave him back the deck and said, "Pick your stuff up after the show." Tapers beware! Seven Dust <Atlanta GA> This band is now very anti-taping. In 11/98, they gave a friend permission to tape a show and took his tape after the show! Shellac <Chicago, IL> They NEVER allow taping and have spoken out against it at several shows. They have taken gear away until after the show. But usually venues they play at don't have heavy security, so getting gear in is usually a cake walk. They will stop the show and bitch at you if they see or suspect you're taping. Sheryl Crow <?> No taping allowed at present. Slayer <Los Angeles, CA> They are very anti-taping, so tapers beware! Smog <NYC?> When a fellow taper asked him if he cared if he taped him a few months ago, he said he would prefer that he didn't. Son Volt <New Orleans, LA> They no longer allow taping of any kind, this coming straight from the manager and from tapers. Squirrel Nut Zippers <Efland, NC> They no longer allow ANY taping of ANY kind, despite the good wishes of the band members, so it's stealth or nothing at this point. The tour manager is VERY anti-taping. Steve Earl/Del McCourey <?> A person was recently (3/99) stopped from taping Steve Earl w/a mic stand fob during a recent North Carolina show, apparently because he is recording for a live album to be released in the future. Be prepared to stealth depending upon the security at your venue. Susan Werner <Philadelphia, PA> After being refused a board patch in Albany, NY on Halloween '98, a fellow taper was caught stealth taping her show. When JANE, the road/tour manager found out, she got very upset, refused to hear the tapers arguments about the benefits of allowing taping and expressed that taping is illegal and not to waste her time about this. Tapers be aware. Tea Party <?> The band prefers to be in control of what gets out to the public, so they are against it. An apparent band member has stated that if you're gonna tape, don't piss off the band by being blatant about it. Stealth is the key. Testament <?> They are VERY anti-taping and very unreasonable and have threatened to break any recording equipment they find. *They Might Be Giants <Brooklyn, NY> Although their taping policy has yet to be clarified, John Linell, one of the band members was quoted as saying: "We appreciate the interest shown by tape-traders and bootleggers, but we also appreciate the money from our record sales. I guess you should let your conscience be your guide." There are also new reports (4/99) that Flansburgh said in an interview that they are kind of flattered that folks want to tape their shows and he wishes he could pass out DATs so people could have high quality stuff. So their policy seems to be ambiguous at best. Tiny Town <New Orleans, LA> Although two of their new members are from the Subdudes (now defunct), who used to allow taping, Tiny Town has recently made folks take down their mike stands. Tapers beware. *Tom Petty <?> Tom Petty and his band have always been against taping and have recently (9/99) been busting more tapers than usual. Urge <St. Louis MO> Their tour manager, Yanni, is VERY unfriendly and against taping and has his crew on the lookout for tapers. Verve Pipe <East Lansing, MI> No longer allow taping of any kind! Willie Nelson <?> Willie doesn't mind, but his management is totally against it. Taping is not allowed. Ziggy Marley <Jamaica?> Their management has stated: "Absolutely no taping allowed." *end of list as of 9-04-99* ====================================================================== Regarding the Grateful Dead and the surviving members' musical efforts and corresponding taping policy, they have been allowing it in an official taping section on the lawn of their ongoing festival called "The Other Ones." FOB taping is generally tolerated if you don't affect anyone else's line of sight or inconvenience others, but the tolerance factor often varies from venue to venue. For the Summer '98 Tour, no tapers tickets are needed, but one has to have a lawn ticket (the tapers section is limited to the lawn area) in order to get your taping equipment in the door. The number of decks let in the door may be limited by the venue, so get there early if you want to tape. Overall, your best bet to tape the Other Ones Festival is to run a 90meter tape. For further information, check out their web site at: "http://www.dead.net". Joe, a soundman from the Blacksburg, VA area, has recently run into a rash of problems with newbie tapers who don't know what equipment they are expected to bring to be able to patch into the SBD and how to treat the soundman for best results. He has asked me to share the following with all of you in the hopes that it may reach at the eyes and consciousness of at least one newbie taper. I think it is representative of the problems and the concerns of most other soundmen across the country. Please bear in mind that no matter how taper-friendly a band is, if you act like a jerk and get on the bad side of the soundman, you are much less likely to get any cooperation from him and may even be told that they'll be no taping that night. Anyway, here it is, in Joe's own words: "I work for a sound company that provides club sound for two local clubs and a variety of road shows in the area. It seems every other show or so, someone asks me if its OK to tape the band. Some thoughts: I *will* ask the band if its OK, so don't try to lie and say it's cool with the band. That's not happened to me, but it has happened to co-workers. I can always use an extra tape. Always come prepared. A mono 1/4 inch to stereo adaptor is a must. Bring 1/4 inch adaptors, XLR adaptors, a 10+ foot cable (with a twistie/something to tie the slack up with), a power extension cord, and 3 prong to two prong adaptor. I'm not being paid to provide you with equipment. Please don't pester me. Catch me before the show, ask me quickly, and then wait for me to get some time to talk with you and get you set up. Just find a spot near the board and hang out for a while. The show may start before I can help you, but I've got my priorities to take care of. And please don't ask me to flip your tape if you've just using a cassette deck - I've got more important things to do." Editor's note: I can't say it often enough--get to the venue early, 2 hours before showtime if possible, and get set up way in advance of the show. In this way, you'll make life a lot easier for everyone concerned. One more thing: even if a band allows board access, tapers should not attempt to plug into the board without the assistance of the sound engineer. There are shows where naive tapers help themselves to the board thinking it will be OK and that always greatly upsets the engineer and normally ruins the chance for a board patch for everyone at that show. It takes the engineers a lot of time and effort to set things up (and the house sound, not tapes, is always their primary responsibility) and they don't need or want tapers plugging things in or out without their knowledge. Many newer/smaller bands will allow taping if you arrive early and chat w/the band. You may find yourself promising the band a copy and getting their address/phone # in return. Audio, video and soundboard access are always possible, but in some cases the venue may have restrictions or fees, even after you get permission from the band. At some Los Angleles clubs, for instance, there is a $50 video fee and a $500 DAT SBD patch one (fees in your city may vary). Just because a particular band is listed here, doesn't guarantee that you'll be allowed to tape them. All it takes is one bootleg CD from a recent taping-allowed show or one beer spilled into the soundboard of a recent BA-allowed show and the band will often quickly regret their decision to allow taping and disallow it from that moment on. It's also not entirely uncommon for you to show up at the venue of a concert of a band that allows taping, only to find that the security individual you encounter wasn't informed by his boss that it's OK to let folks in with their tape decks and mikes, thus denying you the access you deserve. In such a case, there are several things you can do: 1) insist on talking to the head of security, 2) try another entrance in the hopes of finding a better informed security employee, 3) stealth it, 4) leave your taping equipment in your car. Of course, the best thing to do is to contact the band a week or so before the concert and make sure they have contacted the venue and asked them to allow folks to bring their recording equipment in to the show. If you call the venue, ask for the head of security and confirm that the band has informed him that taping will be allowed and that the security employees have been or will be informed of this, you'll save yourself a lot of trouble later. This little act of initiative on your part can make all the difference in the world. Another related problem that you may encounter is a concert that is advertised as allowing taping, but prohibiting "professional equipment." In this case you are at the mercy of how and where the security personnel draw the line between "consumer" and "professional" equipment. Many times anything with XLR connections is deemed too "professional" to allow in. Those who have encountered this problem have told me that they can usually get past this hurdle by simply going in through a different gate where the security individual isn't quite as knit-picky. In addition, whatever the taping restriction might be, it seems to be slightly easier to get your equipment in if you are either in the first wave of fans getting in the door or the last. Finally, when a band has an official taping section and doesn't require taping tickets for you to be able to tape there (e.g., Phish), they often let folks bring their taping gear in until the taping section fills up, and at that point they inform the security not to let anyone else in with their mics and/or deck. Be ye forewarned: if you fail to arrive early, you will most likely be told that the taping section is now full and you'll have to take your taping gear back to your car. I want to make it perfectly clear that in no way does this author or the people who have contributed to this list encourage or condone the bootlegging of the recordings of the artists mentioned above. When a band gives us their permission to tape their concerts, there is an implicit understanding that we will do so only for our own listening (and trading) pleasure and not try to profit from this by selling a copy of the recording afterwards. 95% of all tapers are honest audio hobbyists who are only looking to record a unique audio event for their own listening enjoyment (i.e., to relive the live concert experience) and have about as much in common with bootleggers as good doctors have with quacks. The great majority of us tapers agree that the selling of the music that a band allows us to tape for free is an extreme act of back-stabbing and is considered taboo. Let it be known that the purpose of this list is not to encourage or facilitate bootlegging in any way, shape or form; it is to inform and instruct audio hobbyists as to which bands have given us their permission to tape their live performances and what, if any conditions or restrictions such bands choose to place on our ability to tape them. It is also designed to help instruct newbie tapers as to some of the do's and don'ts of live taping, as well as to help band managers and record company executives consider some of the potential advantages and benefits of allowing their fans to tape them.. While selling the live recordings of a band without their permissionis heavily frowned upon by 95% of all tapers, trading the same live tapes is a different story and is encouraged by most tapers and bands (allowing taping) alike. There are several reasons why allowing taping and encouraging tape-trading can be advantageous to a band, the most important of which are outlined below. First, it tends to increase a band's fanbase, mostly because the majority of fans feel more allegiance or dedication to a band that freely gives something back to them without asking for anything in return (other than following certain guidlines or rules). Second, tape trading is one of the most effective modes of word-of-mouth advertising that exist and tends to increase the enthusiasm factor among fans and creates a sense of community among those who tape and trade tapes. Many tape traders have become interested in seeing a certain band in concert after enjoying a live recording of theirs from a tape trade. In turn, this renewed interest often causes tape traders to purchase the official CDs of a newly discovered band. Third, when a band allows taping, it will usually increase its take at the gate, in part because of the widening of its fanbase and in part because it will attract the interest of more tapers in the area, many of whom will choose to attend the concert of a newly discovered band if they know they'll be allowed to tape them. I'll be the first to admit that my statement that 95% of all tapers won't bootleg is more my opinion and my guess than any kind of a scientific conclusion based on hard research and surveys. The truth is, there are some dishonest people in any human endeavor or field of human interest and it's not that easy to come up with an exact number or percentage of how many rip-off artists there are out there. It's true that when you allow taping, you also open yourself to an increased possibility that you will be bootlegged. But consider this: if you allow taping and encourage your fans to trade your live recordings among themselves, the most ardent ones (who would be a prime target for bootleggers to sell their wares to) will already have a copy of all the most sought-after shows. Therefore, the bootleggers will have fewer potential buyers to peddle their illegal wares to. Another point is that bootleggers tend to ignore laws and are not the kind of people who will wait until you allow taping before deciding to bootleg you. We don't close our banks because there are bank robbers out there and we certainly don't close our churches because there are some priests who are pedophiles; we do what we feel is right and take immediate action to weed out the small amount of bad that comes with the overwhelming amount of good. Bootleggers are going to operate whether a band allows taping or not and, in my opinion, the way to combat them is not through disallowing taping but through legal channels. It certainly wouldn't hurt to impose tougher penalites against record store owners and managers who choose to buy this illegal merchandise. If you have any questions or suggestions to improve this list, please let me know. As always, if you know of any other groups allowing taping that I haven't listed here, please let me know so I can share it with all the others out there who might benefit from it. As I mentioned above, I'm currently trying to complete the info on where each band resides, i.e., where they play the most concerts, thus where one is most likely to be able to catch them and tape them. Please help if you can. Finally, you are encouraged to share this list with any and all forums/newsgroups/lists that stand to benefit from it. If you want to include this list in your webpage by establishing a link from your webpage to Mike Wagner's at "http://www.enteract.com/~wagner/btat", please be considerate enough to email him first at <wagner@enteract.com>. He'll be truly honored. Finally, it goes without saying that the selling of this list and/or any of the information contained herein, is strictly forbidden. In music there is peace, and in taping there is documentation of unique sound events, Kurt <kkemp@ccsf.cc.ca.us>
