A test with a few external mic pres would lay to rest (for this
particular set-up) the question of if the problem can be traced
to the DA-P1 mic-pre.
I personally suspect the contorted 460B units but it would
take a custom job to pin the problem conclusivly to the 460B
and not the capsules used with it if the mics are to blame.
Then there is the issue of phantom power. Have you confirmed
that your DA-P1 indeed puts the full 48 Volts on the phantom
drop-resistors inside the DA-P1 ?
Mics like
>Schoeps, B&Ks, or Neumanns
all sound very different. I have no advice but to try the various
choices and cry when you return the two you can't afford to keep.
By this time a mic-pre might make a difference.

Has anyone discussed the possible demise of DAT due to media-less storage? It seems to be an obvious direction
as it becomes easier to obtain larger amounts of storage while still being rather small in size.

Are you Shure (narf!) that it's not PA Crapitis. I've maybe been to ONE
show that sounded halfway decent this summer. (ABB @ SPAC 6/24/96. Peak
SPL's were about 126dB. A lot of fools really close up front suprisingly
reported that their Schoeps's were overloading really bad. Too bad. I used
about 30dB of pads all told, and it's crispy!)
P.S.: DMB soundman, go see the ABB and take notes.

my experence with DIC brand tapes has been horrible the batch i used shed
oxide so bad after 4 or 5 plays i had to manually clean the heads after
about 35 hrs. i dont want to defame the DIC media co. they are after all
made in the usa- perhaps i got a bad lot. KAO,sony (generic as well as
labeled) and hewett-packard have all worked ok for me. remember,
inexpensive blanks are inviting, they might be cheap for a reason.

i dont feel enough can be said about having a good mic pre (mp from here on)
i have had rec'd with: aerco, oade, custom oade, sonosax, schoeps,
beyerdynamic, neumann, and two original design pres. my faves are the
sonosax and schoeps, while the aerco gets a gold star for being the most
stealth. the aerco is a good unit and affordable (650.00) also the
transformer coupled inputs sound very good with the 460. i used this
combo for 2 yrs then i bought schoeps. face it, the mp inside most all
port. decks sound good with dialoge but not high spl at a concert. two
other pre's i hve not heard but iwould strongly consider are the lunatech
and black audio devices.

Not a chance! Your lack of a "full sound" is because you're recording
the sound of a PA system in a questionable acoustic space. Mic
preamps won't improve things. Nor, likely, will mics. What will
help, in my opinion, is to find really good sounding venues to record
in, learn good mic positions in those venues, get there early enough
to set up properly, and then you'll improve your sounds.
Folks, I've been wondering about these "really great" concert tapes
for a while now. In the past couple of days we've had a question
indicating that one taper's recordings suffer from audience talking.
Another described a concert where a singer's mic and the PA system
covering the lawn area (the only place were recording was allowed)
went on the fritz for a good portion of the show. There are countless
other problems and yet people still claim that they have great concert
tapes.
Now, I'm not a tape collector so I've never tried to get in on a tree,
but I'm really curious as to what you're listening to. If there's
someone in the Washington DC area who would invite me over for a
listening session (or I'll invite you to bring some tapes and enjoy my
beer), I'd really like to hear what you all are doing.
If someone can show me a recording that really blows me away, I'll
shut up about this, but until I hear some examples of good concert
recording to counter all the reports of problems that I read here,
I'll remain skeptical that anyone with a DA-P1 and decent mics like
AkG C-460's (and the knowledge to use them properly) can improve
things significantly by getting better mics and preamps. Anyone want
to take up the challenge?

Hi all-
Well, I have a pair of tix for KISS in Orlando 9/22 (Sunday). I am still
going down to Tampa that weekend and will see them in Tampa on that
Friday, but my plans changed and I must leave early Monday morning and
can't take the chance that I won't be able to function Monday
afternoon...
The way Orlando is set up is there is a front floor section with about
10 rows and then three smaller square sections behind it with about 20
rows and then the rest of the floor sections are normal size...
My tix are in the second block (not sure whether it is the right, left
or center square offhand). And are 6 rows back, making the seats about
16-20 rows from the stage (because there is a little aisle between the
first block and second block)...

Sec 1 has about 10 rows and Sec 2, 3, 4 has about 20 rows. My tix are
either 2, 3, or 4 and about 6 rows in...
E-Mail if interested... Tapers are obviously preferred, but as I live in
NY and my friend in Tampa has no idea how to get rid of them, I want to
take care of this ASAP so if a nontaper contacts me first, I will not
hold off... Besides, I already taped all 4 nights at the Garden and will
do Tampa and all the NY/NJ dates in December... ;>

Sounds like all the security guard wanted was a tape of the show,
especially considering he refused to break the tape. Of course, being
a complete moron, the only way he knew how to get a copy of the show
was to steal the tape from you. I've been to Slayer shows before, and
I can attest to the fact that taping should be the least of their
problems. I'm still surprised they don't have multiple deaths at
every Slayer show just from the amount of violence that goes on in the
pit. And the security guards don't do shit about that.

WHAT TO E-MAIL:
===============
A list of DAT/DDS tapes you have purchased and used in the past *3
months*,
broken down by manufacturer and grade. Specify how many used and how
many
have been problematic (diginoise, bad shell, chewed up in machine,

relative to other tapes you have purchased - low, medium, or high.
Also, don't forget to specify if a tape is of 'one-pass' variety,

Its accuracy and relevancy depends on your contributions. I understand
that
it can be hard to estimate - just be as unbiased and truthful as you

Subject: D7/D8 nightmares continue....
Date: Wed, 7 Aug 1996 12:37:01 -0400 (EDT)
We've had two severe -- and baffling -- failures of Sony D7 and D8 units here
at National Public Radio's Chicago bureau.
In the first case, a reporter went into the field with a newly-issued (i.e.
out-of-the-box) D8 to conduct interviews. After returning, she rewound the
tape, then logged the contents. (The machine was turned off between recording
and logging, but the tape was not removed from the machine.) After logging, she
rewound the tape and presented it to one of my colleagues to have him dub
sections to open reel (yes, we still produce from open reel here). He was
unable to locate _any_ audio on the tape. A Sony DTC-700, DTC-690, and TCD-D10
PRO II, as well as a Tascam DA-P1 were unable to detect any audio; all machines
still detected (intermittent) A-time and Start IDs.
It happened again yesterday. Another reporter -- one who started out as an
engineer and has been a DAT partisan for years -- went into the field to do
some interviews using his D7. Being a healthy paranoid, he kept stopping down
to rewind slightly and listen back to make sure he was getting signal on tape.
Each time, he was confident. Upon returning to the bureau this morning,
however, the tape didn't carry his interviews from last night. Instead, the
tape carried the same material he thought he'd recorded over last night -- with
a CONSIDERABLE amount of mistracking added. (I recorded those interviews, and I
know there was no mistracking.)
It sounds in both cases almost like some strange and precious misalignment of
tape took place, one that allowed the machines to read back off tape until the
cassettes were unthreaded and removed from the machine. In the second case, the
D7 wrote enough signal to tape to confuse the tracking of the original signal.
Anyone have a clue what's up here?
Thanks in advance....
