From: Jeff Wright <gofry@mindspring.com> Subject: Re: CD cleaner Date: Wed, 02 Oct 1996 13:27:13 -0400 This is in response to somebody's question on the best CD cleaner. You might think it's crazy, but the best way to clean CD's is with soap and water. Use some kind of mild dish detergent, a soft cloth, and wipe from the center out! I'm telling you this is the best way, it works great for dust, dirt, and sticky liquids (like beer). Air dry. Cheap, quick, and easy. Jeff 'squeaky clean' Wright
From: jmurphy@iastate.edu Subject: Phish grovels... Date: Wed, 2 Oct 1996 13:15:19 -0500 Hi First off, i'm still trying to get ahold of a copy of Phish at Wolf Mtn. 8/2/96 Since I'm a single DAT person, i would prefer to send a new blank and return postage. Also, i'd like to try and get a ticket for Phish in Omaha (its GA so I believe theres no official tapers section) and Ames (which does have a tapers section). Thanks much! John
From: Ramasubramanian Ramesh <rramesh@dadd.ti.com> Subject: Help me buy a home deck Date: Wed, 2 Oct 1996 13:06:58 -0500 Hi everyone: I am new to this group and an audiophile. I am trying to get myself a DAT home deck that will replace my old and aging Nak cassette deck. My requirements are audiophile quality at reasonable price ($1k range) with very good reliability. I read the FAQ and Marketposting. They are more like reference manuals not an "intro to DAT" kind of documents (No, this is not a criticism, just an indication of my knowledge on the subject; I greatly appreciate someone taking the time to put together these docs.) Please advise me on buying some DAT home decks. Here is what I have 1) A Nak BX125 cassette deck (I am trying to replace this with DAT deck) 2) A Nak MB-2 MusicBank CD player with digital output (I do not know what kind, will find out though) 3) An Acurus R10 preamp 4) An Acurus A150 Amp 5) A pair of Von Sweikert's VR-4 speakers. I like the following features in my DAT deck: 1) Audiophile quality (probably all are, but...) 2) Allows free copying (prefererably, no SCMS) 3) Reliable and long lasting 4) Regular RCA connectors ananogue in/out 5) Digital in and out compatible with audiophile CD's and D/A's (I don't know what this means, but the idea is that I don't want to buy a deck that is not going to talk to an outboard D/A (say from Audio Alchemmy) I buy in the future) 6) price $1k range (less is ok too :-) 7) Blends with the rest of the above components (do not want an "way too odd looking" piece) 8) Remote control highly preferable, but will not die for it. Also, I noticed several DAT stores are referred to in the FAQ, do any of them have a Web page? Do they send flyers out so that I can read about a particular item before I buy it. I live in Dallas vicinity, are there any stores that sell DAT here? if so what brands? If possible, I like to listen to some units before I buy mine. Thanks for all your help. This is my first posting. So, please forgive anything I say here that is offensive to this audience (I come from rec.audio.high-end group to this one) If this is one of the standard question and you feel that it is unlikely that the rest of the audience will not be interested in the answer, please send me your response directly to rramesh@dadd.ti.com. If there is sufficient interest, I can summarize the responses and post it as a digest here. Ramesh
From: "Brad G. Serling" <brad@metaverse.com> Subject: extra GD DATs Date: Wed, 02 Oct 96 14:53:19 -0500 Hi folks. OK, so I win the bonehead stoner tapers' award for outstanding achievement in miss-mass-duplication. In the process of cloning some of the Betty's for some friends (2 clones at a time), I accidently dubbed three extras, and skipped one. So I've got an extra copy of: 4/6/71, 3/16/73, 3/24/73. Anyone wanna do a quick swap? Drop me a line (brad@elvis.com) /Brad

From: Jeff <jeffq@got.net> Subject: D5 TOC questions Date: Wed, 02 Oct 1996 15:38:30 -0700 Greetings, people. I think of myself as fairly intelligent when it comes to VCRs, but I can't figure out how my Fostex D5 works with its TOC to save my life. Some DATs have TOCs on them after I renum them, and some don't. I don't understand why I don't get a TOC EVERY time I renum. I'll give a simple scenario, and I ask for a bit of help as to why it doesn't work: - I have a 60m DAT made (by somebody else) from 2 90-minute analog cassette SBD masters. The S-ID/P-NO's of each song are on the DAT. This annoys me - I prefer my DAT S-ID's to be numbered 1-4, to correspond to the 4 sides of 2 90-minute analog tapes for doing D>A. - I S-ID search to the first S-ID, and erase it. I do this for the rest of the S-ID's, and it takes me a very long time, but I am patient. - I then write my own four S-ID's, one at the beginning of the music, and one near every 45-minute interval. - I enter a END ID at the end of the music on the DAT. - I press the 'renumber' button and the D5 does its thing. - I write-protect the DAT Ok, so the DAT is all ready to do D>A, and I can program the D5 to play any of the 4 "tunes" I've made using their P-NO, and this is great. But, I don't see a TOC, and I can't find one. Even if I play the first tune, nothing is read. I don't see any blinking TOC light, and the manual is full of shit. On other occasions, I have gotten a TOC to be read. So I figure I'm doing something totally incorrect here. Someone please show me the error of my ways! From: cmescia@infinet.com (Chris Mescia) Subject: phish's mics Date: Wed, 2 Oct 1996 19:08:22 -0400 (EDT) In response to: Let's clear this up: I was fortunate enough to get backstage after one of the recent Phish shows, and asked Paul Languedoc about the purpose of those "special AKG's"; he told me that they are used for an aud mix _into the ADAT's_, and are _NOT_ (and I specifically asked him about this point) mixed into the stereo board mix, which is the same mix going into the 3700. There are three mics mounted at the board: two "special" AKG C3000's and a Shure VP-88 stereo mic. The AKG's are used as stated above, and the Shure is used to make a separate aud recording. There is no two-track "matrix mix"; there is a _32_ track mix made of every show via the ADATs. :-) --- So what you are saying is that Phish makes 1)a DSBD with no aud mixed in at all, 2) a straight AUD tape with the Shure VP-88's and 3)AKG3000 aud mix'd into a 32 track SBD tape of each show?? Seems like a bit of an overkill. Why not just a DSBD multitrack, and an AUD copy (with much higher quality mics)? This would let them mix it together in a studio for much better results... Not to doubt them at all, just curious... BTW, I heard that John Popper played at a pearl jam show within the past week and it was killer. I also heard that the show was very windy and rainy, with almost no aud tapes coming out with kind sound.... Is this true, and did anyone get nice results with taping?? Thanks, Chris
From: Daniel Estrin <daniel.estrin@chadbourne.com> Subject: DA-20 prices Date: Wed, 02 Oct 1996 19:25:09 -0700 In response to WGARDNER's request for current street prices on the DA-20: I just bought a DA-20 from Full Compass for $790 (I had to talk them down from like $818). For $790 they agreed to pay for shipping to NYC and to throw in 3 (or was it 5?) blank 60 meter AMPEX DATs, and, of course, no sales tax (they're in Wisconsin). This was by far the best deal I could find for the DA-20 so I went with it. Good luck!!
From: "Philip S." <aiko@henge.com> Subject: Re: Another Tascam DA-20 Question Date: Wed, 02 Oct 1996 18:20:02 -0700 Bill, You mentioned that the DA-30 MK II won't play 90 meter tapes. Actually, it will. TASCAM (like other manufacturers) counsels against the use of 90 meter tapes. They claim that these tapes are "too thin and can cause winding problems, crimping, wrinkling, and other damage to the tape which will destroy your work". When they built the DA-30 MK II, they designed it to produce an error code if you insert a 90 meter or 180 minute tape. If it detects such a tape, all functions are disabled except for the door open button. The trick is to fool the tape deck into believing that you are not using a thin tape. Every DAT has a series of holes on the bottom front edge of the tape. Some are open and some are closed, depending on the type of tape. When the tape is fed into your TASCAM, the deck automatically searches for open holes to read the tape. This function is similar to the tabs on analog tapes that tell the deck whether the tape is normal bias, chrome or metal, and whether it is write protected. If you've ever had to over-dub an analog tape that has the tabs punched out of it, then you know what to do with your DA-30 MK II. Cover the second hole from the left on the bottom of the tape with a piece of tape label. When the deck tries to detect the thickness of the tape, it will read it as "thick" instead of thin, and allow you to use it. The counters on the deck will then read and write up to the full length of the tape, just like any other deck. If you're not sure which hole is which, read page 6 of your owner's manual. It provides a detailed picture and description of the structure of a DAT. My DA-30 MK II has, admittedly, crunched a couple of 90 meter tapes. Both times that this happened, I was removing the tape without rewinding it first. Since then, I've made a practice of always rewinding to the beginning before ejecting a tape, and have not had a problem so far. If you're uncomfortable with this procedure, then you can resign yourself to not playing or recording 90 meter tapes in it. This is unacceptable to me, so I'm willing to take what I believe to be a small risk of damaging a DAT. If you have any other questions, feel free to drop me a line. Phil

From: Bemand@aol.com Subject: Selling off DAT Equipment and tapes Date: Wed, 2 Oct 1996 23:00:35 -0400 Hey folks, Do to an unfortunate financial circumstance, I am forced to sell off my DAT taping equipment and tapes. The list of tapes I have available is up at http://users.aol.com/bemand/ There are 200+ tapes (all are 120 minute/60 meter) that I would like to sell for $3.50 each, or for a total of $700 (plus shipping). I prefer to sell the tapes as a whole lot, but may break them up if I get no takers. Buy them all and get the nice wooden cases I'm storing them in!!! I have two Sony D7 DAT machines and a Core Sound digital cable. The D7s will come with all original packaging, and one of them has 3 and a half years left of an extended warranty. I prefer to sell them both to the same person, $700 for both machines and the cable (plus shipping). I have two microphones set ups for $100 each, or $175 for both (plus shipping). I have a pair of MarcSounds stealth mics with the batter box, and I have an AT835 shotgun mic. Or if some person wants to take everything off of my hands (Tapes, decks, & mics) I will part with the whole package for $1500 plus shipping.

From: KINE1@aol.com Subject: re: CD's with digital out Date: Wed, 2 Oct 1996 23:11:51 -0400 Hey everybody, There have been a couple of questions about this lately. I'm sure that this is not the best answer but I have a Sony CDP-625. It is a 5 disc changer with optical (only) digital out. I got it in 1992 for about $350, I think. The disc changer is probably a terrible transport but it seems to playback fine to me and is probably a good candidate to be found in a pawn shop as one person mentioned. -Chip

From: lowfrqcy@west.net (Call Me Al) Subject: SBD Connections? Date: Wed, 2 Oct 1996 21:44:26 -0700 Hello DATty people! anyway, i have a couple questions for all you... I have a D7, just got it, and I was wondering the most convienient and best way to connect it to a soundboard. I'd like to have either XLR, 1/4", and RCA options, obviously ending in an 1/8" mini plug. Should i have one cable, say XLR to XLR, and adapt on both ends? is there an XLR > 1/8" cable so I'd just have adaptors on one end? Should i hvae 3 cables handy? I'd like to have my set up as small as possible.... ALso, I'm just thinking about ordering a nice amount of tapes to start with, maybe 20, where should I order from? And what type? I'd like to try to stick to 60m, i've heard too may horror stories... BTW, those headphones people were recommending from Radio Shack were the Pro-25's, right? thanks! Last thing, if anyone would be so incredibly kind enough to copy me some nice jazz related stuff (MMW, Zorn, anything like that...anything really) i'd be an amazing deed...i have nothing right now DAT, but i could give some of my crispy analog list, plus blanks and postage (obviously...). So, sorry for the Newbie rant, but believe me, i checked the FAQ and everything for answers.... Thanks! regards, COSMO!
