We would gladly use a right angle 1/8" plug if we could find a professional quality plug that was repairable. We've scoured the world looking for one -- haven't found one yet. When a right angle connector is needed we recommend a right angle adapter -- Radio Shack makes a decent one for under $5. Perhaps we should offer the adapter as an option, the way the folks at Headroom do. > One last point. From: noschwag@juno.com (John A Procopio) Subject: Digi-Noise -- Argghhh! Date: Sun, 8 Dec 1996 13:53:53 PST Hello all. Well, I'm having some probs with my DA-20. I seem to remember a few digests ago Dan Estrin mentioning that everytime he played a tape in his DA-20 (?) he got digi-noise. Well, I am now experiencing the same problem. The tape will play flawlessly in my D8 but is riddled with noise in the Tascam. This happens with _every_ tape :( Any help and/or suggestions to resolve this problem is welcome at Noschwag@juno.com. Dan -- ever fix your prob?? John

We have reports that the -2600 will accept the D8's start IDs via our 7-pin-to-XLR cable. So the -2600 treats the data stream as S/PDIF, not AES/EBU despite coming in via the XLR. When I'm able to get this fixed, I'll offer it out for trades. Sorry! Does anyone have any advice on how to fix a tape that has one channel out of phase? J&R is also closing out the JVC TD-V661 for $199; a three-head deck with real-time counters that also work in FF and RW. It seems to me a pretty solid machine, though they sure would have done better sticking with the display on the old TD-V66, which I think has the best meters and counter layout of any 3-head I've seen. The functionality remains on the V661, but you have to press a button to switch between the counter and the peak level LED (the number display, the bars are always there). It does have adjustable bias controls, which is a plus, but a silly mechanical door, which is a minus, IMO. Now that it looks as if my DA-20 is down (frown) now it seems as if it's a good time to purchase that 3rd deck. Who has the lowest price on the DA-P1s these days? Thanks in advance. Oh, also with the DA-20, not only does it read digi-noise on every tape -- on some it has no levels whatsoever! Holding down FF and PLAY at the same time prove that there is still music on the DAT it's just not audible when hitting play alone. Any ideas on what kind of damage I'm looking at here? John

Primarily about what they do and est price range? If this is not already in the FAQ, it should definitely be there. "Jitter" refers to timing errors at the output of a D/A. As the D/A converts the discrete time signal to continuous time, these timing errors can cause audible distortion in the continuous time signal. A jitter reduction unit tries to reduce these timing errors. Sorry, I don't know how much they cost. > Also, and don't mean to sound stupid here, if I used the analog output to go to my > preamps in, then the DAT's D/A converter is used at whatever *quality* that is. > Does the author of the above imply that a standalone D/A convert of obvious more > cost/quality would improve sound quality. Yes, the author implied that his outboard D/A converter is better than the internal D/A converter on his DAT. And yes, this outboard DAC would be fed by the digital out from the DAT.
