I think with all the other stuff you might have going into USB, like your
keyboard, mouse, printer, etc, you might have difficulties with audio data as
well. I'm not entirely sure here, so rather than just blathering on, I'm going
to do some investigation. I'm having dinner with one of the top audio people at
MS this week -- and one of the top computer audio guys in the country, and I'll
see what he has to say.

Thanks to those who replied via email to my question about one of my
DA-20's not recording start ID's when cloning (while the other one would).
Turned out to be a wetware problem. I had either forgotten about the
"auto ID" button, which puts it into the "auto" mode to pass through
the start IDs, or just somehow had my normal record deck in the right
mode through sheer dumb luck. (The manual is very unclear on this,
and sounds as if the auto ID only applies to recording from analog
input, creating an ID when silence is detected during tunes.)

It depends on if you care about them or not, personally, I don't
ever use them, except to froward over blank at the beginning of a
tape, so its not much of an issue...The analog stage of the 512 is
not great but listenable (better than Kenwood, JVC, and sony players
I have heard)
I had heard about the Philips CD players, but couldn't find anyone
who would sell me one here in the states...

Hello,
I ran into a Sony DTC-A9 in an Amsterdam store the other day. It was priced
at (fl 3599,-) a level comparable to a Tascam DA30-mkII. It had 4-heads, SBM
and apparantely the usuall modern features. Why is it this expensive ???
It isn't in the market-posting yet, so does anyone have any info on this
machine allready ???

When are some good jazz shows going to be tree'd? I know somebody's taping
them. Is that permanent jazz tree still going on, and if so, how do I get on
it? I only had one DAT machine at the time the tree started, but now have a
second one to clone with. I tried to contact the guy that was running the tree,
but he never responded, and I recall he was trying to find someone else to run
the tree. Any help appreciated.

Since I have moved to pro DAT's I no longer need my SCMS stripper, and I
looking to sell it.
The following is the FCN-1 product description from Digital Domain's web site.
"The FCN-1 Format Converter very effectively addresses these problems and
several others. Input is switchable between a 110 ohm XLR, a 75 ohm RCA
jack, or an optical (Toslink) jack. Its built-in five-output distribution
amplifier simultaneously feeds (3) RCA jacks, one XLR male, and one optical
jack, so you can make a master and safety, or up to 5 DAT copies for all
your studios at once, with virtually any combination of Consumer and
Professional machines. You can also use the FCN-1 as an input/output
switcher for a Digital Audio Workstation, CD player, and DAT machines. All
non-optical inputs and outputs are floating, transformer coupled, helping
to keep hum and digital interference from entering your analog domain. An
8-position output format DIP switch sets the important channel status bits
that allow compatibility between machines, including Pro/Consumer,
Emphasis, Sampling Frequency, Copy, SCMS status, and Category Code. The
digital signal path is 24 bits. A thorough User's Guide explains all."
I paid $450 for it new. Selling for $250 + s/h.

Has anyone had experience with the Sony repair center in Boston? My D3's
heads just went out of alignment, it doesn't unload properly (unless I tap
the cassette door after hitting eject, it hums and flashes the caution
light), and it occasionally makes a grinding noise when I rewind. I talked
to Paul at ProDigital, and he thought it would be cheaper for me to send it
to Sony than have him fix it. I just talked to Sony, and they want me to
send it to their Boston service center (they don't do DATs in Atlanta,
which is nearby), and they want me to include a check for the repair, tax,
and shipping to pay for the service before they fix it. I'm a bit wary;
has anyone used the Boston (actually Westwood MA) service center? Was your
experience good or bad?

That price seems a little high. Four years ago, I got a Philips CD-920 for
only $150, which has a "coax" (actually RCA) S/PDIF (IEC) digital out.
I remember going in the store with my SV-3700, becuase I had to verify that

Hello all-
This was discussed a long time ago... NAPA makes analog cassette racks that
hold 100 tapes. But, if you take it and remove 3 horizontal slots, leave one
slot, remove 3, etc... Then, flip it vertically, and boom, you can hold 175
DAT's with no real room to move, or 150 with some play between them...
They cost about $20-$25... I got mine for $11 each on sale a long time ago...

Hi there -
In an effort to save on Bubble pack envelopes I think I have come up with a
way to extend their lives. The most wear and tear comes from staples/
packing tape. I have used this method primarily when doing blanks and
postage, and have had 1 envelope last a long time. And still be in good
shape. I hope I am clear in the explanation.
1.
_______________________
I i \I I
I overlap ài I Back View
I i I
I__________ __b__i__a___I
2. Take a Bubble pack envelope (do not use FiberPack. It leaves little nasty
things on the tapes that no one wants in their machines) The Self stick
type are not recommended for this either.
3. With the envelope laying flat, and unbent, place a strip of packing tape
across the entire front side of the open end, lining the edge of the tape
flush with the edges of the envelope.
4. Fold that side over as if you were about to seal it.
5. Mark how far the flap comes down the back side (in your mind or with a
pen)
6. Take another strip of packing tape apply across the back of the envelope
about a quarter of an inch UNDER the flap.
7. Now, when you fold the envelope over you should have the two tape strips
slightly overlapping that entirely cover the manilla of the envelope.
8. Seal the envelope with a third strip of packing tape with one corner
folded over. This corner should be on the A side. The side closest to the
edge. The most important thing is that where ever this third piece of tape
sticks - There is tape underneath it.
9. When the recipient gets the DAT in the mail, all they have to do is peel
off the top layer of tape by the folded tape corner. Packing tape doesn't
stick to itself so the top strip peels off easily and cleanly (while the
other two strips remain intact on the envelope), and without taking half the
envelope with it and without tape buildup.
10. I also include a self stick label with my address on it. You can buy
them rather cheaply at any office supply store.
11. This holds through shipping just fine, and doesn't trash the envelope.
I hope I have been clear and not too anal. I actually just had some time at
the office and not a whole lot else to do. If all of us adopt this practice,
and make it a standard, we can save a lot of money on Bubble packs. I have
spent close to $15.00 on them over the last year. It's not a lot, but I'd
rather have the three blanks. If there are any questions e-mail me
privately.

This information applies to a lot of situations, but here's mine... There
is a local venue that has squat for security (no metal detectors, frisking,
etc. they look at you as you walk in, that's about it). I can get
everything I need in, except for a stand. How should I go about getting it
in? It's a the 15' Shure mic stand. This will be a two person operation (if
it happens). Veteran stealthers, how do you go about getting stands into
the venue, keeping them somewhat hidden, and getting them out?
Many Thanks,

The important thing is, some decks will play errors much better
than others. I keep known-error tapes around just to test such
things. Many home/studio type decks can produce good sound (maybe
not perfect sound) with errors up to 50%. Many portables cannot.

CD's do not have start ID's, they have index marks (P-codes?) which
must be converted or otherwise recognized in the SP/DIF data stream.
Not every deck does this. Oddly enough, the Sony D8 does it but
without 100% reliability... I've seen it miss about 3 indexes out of
30-40. The D8 recognizes index marks and start_id's when it's *not*
in Auto ID mode. The Fostex D5 (and Tascam DA-20) recognize index
marks and start_id's *only* in Auto mode.
