From: Seeley Scott <Seeley_Scott@ems.prc.com> Subject: another dtc-790 scms question Date: Wed, 26 Feb 1997 18:05:44 -0500 I recently tried to clone from a da-20 to a sony dtc790 (I had to use the Sony since it has coax in but not out) and the wierdest thing happened. I was trying to clone a new show onto a tape that already had another show on it (the second show sucked, so I wanted to recycle the tape), and the sony refused to do it. The write-protect tab wasn't in the way. So I assumed the source tape was scms-protected. Just for the hell of it, I then erased the target tape by re-recording it with a dead signal coming in through the sony's *analog* ins (not technically erasing, just recording blank analog sound over the show). Then I tried to clone the good show onto this tape using the identical procedures as the in the first try (i.e. coaxial in on the sony) and it worked! Even if the erased show was scms-protected, it should have allowed itself to be overwritten (if not copied), right? Real weird. Any ideas on this? Thanks, folks! scott
From: Barabbas <mwilliams@preftech.com> Subject: mics? core/sonic/marcsound? Date: Wed, 26 Feb 1997 15:18:31 -0800 I am looking for small mics that one can wear. I was wondering which is the best mic? 1.Core 2.Core Stealth 3.Sonic (they have 3 versions) 4.marcsSound If any one could list the pros and cons on any of the above or knows of a simular mic system that is better, I would be grateful. thanks barabbas

I don't know why; it wasn't explained. I assume that it has something to do with one of the machines not being EXACTLY standard on it's input format. daniel ============================================ Sometimes you can get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.

From: Bill Shaw <bshaw@skyway.com> Subject: ISO: 3-18-88 my first DEAD show Date: Wed, 26 Feb 1997 16:49:42 -0800 OK so I have the old analog auds and sbds, but both are hi-gen lo-qual tapes and I'd love to find a nice digital copy of this mediocre Dead show. HJ Kaiser Oakland CA 3-18-88 Grateful Dead, my first Dead show (not including all the ones my parents took me to before I was old enough to understand). Anyway - anybody got this show on DAT, aud or sbd?? I've got a DSBD of 3-17-88, so it seems 3-18-88 is out there, like the truth on x-files right? Thanks and Peace to all Tapers, -Bill Shaw bshaw@skyway.com
From: "Adam Gross" <AgSTEALTH@msn.com> Subject: CD making Date: Wed, 26 Feb 97 01:25:55 UT I generally do not follow the posts on CD. However, a computer literate friend recently sent me the following message: So tell me what software I need to download DAT onto audio CD's in "red book" format necessary to make a CD. Then we could have some fun with your DAT tapes. Any help to respond to her would be greatly appreciated, as I have no idea what she is talking about! I do know that she has a DAT backup in her computer. Is there any way to use this to input audio signal and end up w/ an audio CD. What if my tapes are recorded at 44.8? What questions do I need to ask her? Please advise. Many thanks in advance....................
From: "Joe McCabe, Energy Ideas" <energyi@nicom.com> Subject: Wharf Rats Date: Wed, 26 Feb 1997 20:17:06 -0500 Strange as this might sound, I've done a compilation of 13 different Wharf Rats onto one 90 Meter DAT. But there is one missing! IN Dupree's Diamond news issue number 29, Bruce hornsby mentiones a 3/18/93 Capitol Centre show that he played accordian. "Man, that was a great night. Playing Wharf Rat, getting chills. Wharf kRat is one of my true favorite songs." So, does anyone have a kind 3/18/93 they'd be interested in trading? From: willard robinson <willr@star.net> Subject: D-5 and Otari DTR-8 Date: Wed, 26 Feb 1997 20:25:06 -0500 A couple of comments on both decks since I have both decks. I would give the nod to the Otari - better UI - better inputs and outputs (but no optical), better 'construction' and overall feel. The number one most annoying thing about the fostex is that the eject button is small and right over rewind (or is it stop). Anyway the Otari has a 'pro' feel vs the fostex's consumer. On a related question - can you use the error counter during the record phase? (on either?) Also - I just got a very good ministry show from germany '96 if people want to trade. Finally anyone know anything about a Steely Dan Monasis '96 soundboard. tc Will my car's alarm was going off last nite when I got to it - unlabled KOA? - you be the judge..... From: Dean Lipoff <deano@nicom.com> Subject: Scared to buy blanks! Date: Wed, 26 Feb 1997 22:30:56 -0500 (EST) Hello All, Quick newbie question for you. Before all this went down with the unlabeled KAO's, I bought a few batches. I have used them for trading and have had only one problem with one of the tapes. I sent it back to get respun and now it's fine. I own one D7, so I don't have the ability to see the error rates.? My question. Can these unlabeled KAO tapes that are apparently clean to the ear have long term problems due to error rates that I can not see with my deck or would these error rates be audible from the start? Thanks Dean
From: Tom Ott <otter@nauticom.net> Subject: DA-P1 Mic overload? Date: Wed, 26 Feb 1997 22:42:03 -0500 Hey everyone; Can anyone describe what mic overload sounds like on the DA-P1? Is there any way of knowing you are overloading the pre-amp by watching the meter? I had 30dB of pad, Sen short shotguns, dial at about 1.75, and the margin never exceeded 5dB. I know that these aren't the ideal mikes for a small club & loud band, but if you never cross the line, how do you know where it is? Otter Will SCMS be applied to sheep cloning too?
From: Bayard <walden@universe.digex.net> Subject: venue table? The seed comes from the Soundboard Monitor Mix -> a DA-P1. Robbie Dunn is graciously providing the seed for us. Sign-ups will be taken at <maf00718@acan.net> Please make your SUBJECT LINE one of the following: Illuminati D>D - If you are willing to make 3 Digital copies from DAT for others. Illuminati DL - If you can not or will not make Digital copies for others. ========================================================================== This is a DAT only tree. All leaves are encouraged to spread the tapes (both DAT & Analog) through offers in all corners of the internet. PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT LEAF SIGNUPS ARE NO GUARENTEED!! IF YOU SIGN UP AS A LEAF YOU MAY BE LEFT OFF THE TREE. I am setting this tree up in the following manner to make it more efficient. Each D>D person is required to make 3 sets of digital copies. I am setting this limit for efficiency reasons. In my opinion, trees can whither and die if people have too many copies to run; that why I'm setting the number of copies you can spin to three for D>D people - thats usually a manageble number. It is important that everyone treat their tree responsibilities as priority if this is going to be sucessful. If you don't think that you get your copies made quickly, PLEASE don't sign up for this tree!! From: Barabbas <mwilliams@preftech.com> Subject: DAT-Heads news group... Date: Wed, 26 Feb 1997 21:50:48 -0800 I found a newsgroup that no one seems to post too. I desided to post to it. It looks like a great newsgroup for trading DAT shows. alt.music.trading.dat I was checking out the alt.music.bootlegs newsgroup, but they are into buying and selling bootlegs and that's just not my scene. I think this unused newsgroup would be a great place to list dat shows and trades. Let me know what you think...start a thread and watch it grow.... barabbas
