All clones made via the AES/EBU input will be scms=00. However clones made via the S/PDIF inputs will only be scms00 if the incoming signal is 00. If the incoming digital signal is scms11 or scms10, the resultant clone will be written as scms10. Hence, this deck will always clone any DAT, but you may be creating copies that can not be subsequently cloned on a consumer deck. peace, further... e
From: "Charles D Boozer" <Charles.D.Boozer@MCI.Com> Subject: Repeat request: SCMS Stripper info Date: Mon, 31 Mar 1997 15:56 -0600 (CST) Anyone have any opinions regarding the Technolab SCMS Stripper vs. the Hutch? I'd really appreciate any opinions (posted to the list or e-mail). This is DAT-related btw, not a complaint about someone else's musical tastes or lack of editing etiquette (which I personally feel should be kept private). Charles

From: "P d L" <pdelima@future.dreamscape.com> Subject: Re: another newbie offer Date: Fri, 21 Mar 1997 17:28:30 +0000 After developing some transport problems with my deck I have decided to stop using 90m dats. This has left me with a bunch of tapes that I no longer need. I would like to offer these to newbies, or those with one deck, in exchange for blanks. All of these shows are on 90m (labeled) Kao dats. I have divided the tapes into 2 batches, one containing 4 dats and the other containing 3 dats. Preference will be given to those individuals who are willing to take a whole batch. In other words, I would prefer to see these tapes go to one or two people. In exchange for the set of four 90m dats I would like 5 new (sealed) 60m blanks. In exchange for the set of three 90m dats I would like 4 new (sealed) 60m blanks. I will only accept Sony, Maxell, Ampex, and (labeled) Kao 60m dats. I will not accept unlabeled dats, even if they are sealed. Preference will be given to tho= se who have the blanks in their possession. Here's the tapes: Batch #1 (Allman Brothers Band) 9/04/94 Waterloo Village, Stanhope, NJ (mics unknown) Daud 8/04/95 Great Woods, Mansfield, MA (Beyers mics) Daud 3/05/96 Beacon Theatre, NYC Neumann KM140=92s Daud 3/06/96 Beacon Theatre, NYC FOB>NAK 300=92s Daud Batch #2 (Medeski, Martin & Wood) 5/05/95 The White Rabbit, Austin, TX Dsbd (mono mix) 10/13/95 The White Rabbit, Austin, TX Dsbd 4/17/96 Fox Theatre, Boulder, CO (B&K 4011=92s) Daud ....... From: Jonathan Edelson <winnie@borealis.com> Subject: Losless audio compression Reply-To: Jonathan Edelson <winnie@borealis.com> Date: Mon, 31 Mar 1997 21:05:56 -0500 (EST) I have just started playing with sonarc; a compression program that does lossless compression of .wav and .voc files on the PC. Seems to be a pretty nifty product; for a recording of Hornsby/Lesh/Wier I got about 30% compression. (Meaning that each 100 meg of source was compressed into 70 meg). I am using the compression software to allow me to store an entire audio CD of information in _CD-ROM_ format, which has greater redundancy than the CD_DA format. To do this, one needs about 13% compression, that is sonarc is 'too good'. I was wondering if there were any losless compression routines which give less compression than sonarc, but which are faster. Ideally something that will adjust itself to maintain about a 15% compression ratio while going as quickly as possible. Thanks for any help. -Jon
From: Rob Gronotte <rob@patriot.net> Subject: Is slow rewind a problem? Reply-To: Rob Gronotte <rob@patriot.net> Date: Mon, 31 Mar 1997 21:33:01 -0500 (EST) I just realized that one of my DATs is rewinding slower than normal - particularly at the beginning of the tape, where it goes very slow. Is this a problem showing signs of wear or problems with the tape? I have probably played this DAT more than any others I have, but still only about 10 times. I hope they don't wear out over that little use. Btw, it's a Maxell sudio grade tape. Rob bootlist --> http://www.patriot.net/users/rob

The noise is before hitting start or anything, just as it takes up the = slack... Is this common? Is it a problem with the Deck or the Tape?? Should I = take it in for servicing?? 2) I *STILL* have very few dat tapes, and, although I use my DAT for my = own musical endeavours, i *REALLY WOULD* like to start building up a collection, so = if anyone of you souls with 2 (or more DAT machines) and THOUSANDS of hours of music = would SPIN me a tape or two, I'd REALLY appreciate it!!! I mean, think of all the time you = have on your hands to spin tapes and listen to shows now that Jerry's gone?? I NEED SOME TAPES TO MAKE IT THRU THE SUMMER OK!?!?!?! According to Art's web page on MasterDAT's (at http://www.tape.com/prodinfo/mstrdat.html), he *won't* tell who they're made by; thus they *can't* be "billed as" anything. He sells Maxell DDS tape (unlabeled?), three notches below the MasterDAT's on his web order form. The MasterDATs won't work on DDS drives, though they meet DDS specs in every other way (apparently, just like 90% or so of all DATs sold do). FWIW, I'd like to know more about his "custom" DAT tape (at http://www.tape.com/prodinfo/housedat.html). He's selling those singley in the 120-minute version for $4.65; the same MasterDAT's are selling for $5.00. Wonder if they're also (apparently?) Fuji's...? From: "Gary Davis" <gdavis@loop.com> Subject: Nels Cline Tree #3 pre-announcement Reply-to: gdavis@loop.com Date: Tue, 1 Apr 1997 02:15:08 +0000 Tonight at the Alligator Lounge, bassist Bob Mair was sick so guitarist G.E. Stinson filled in as the "third" in the trio. They did a totally improvisational set, with Nels & Stinson usually contrasting on guitar styles. They go everywhere from super loud and noisy to almost silent. Norton Wisdom painted as they played. (You'll need to get a video version to see that!) I got the whole thing in "Super Seven Stereo SBD." It runs about 50 mins. I was going to package it with a "best of Nels Cline Trio -- Loud Trax," but I just noticed another GE Stinson recording with Jeff Gauthier and Alex Cline performing their new CD, "Right of Violet," from 1/6/97. This was a direct stereo dSBD and is quite nice -- Alex Cline (Nels' twin brother) had a huge spread of drums which we captured nicely in stereo with overheads. So what do you guys think -- spring for a 90 meter tree and include both GE Stinson shows & the best of Nels Loud? Also, will anyone get really upset if I post my article about Nels Cline? It does have DAT content, after all... --G.Davis

The overwhelming response was: Get the Oades cable. Everyone that > replied told me that it was built much better and worth the money. ... >From what we hear, the Oades do make a very nice cable using Sony's own right angle 7-pin plug. Last I heard, the price was around $150. We could easily offer the same cable but for now we're content to offer the low cost solution. We've sold many hundreds of our cables with the straight 7-pin plugs. They're great for situations when you're not going to move your deck or the cable around much, (for example in your home audio system or at a show where you can set your deck down on something solid). We've never received a cable back with broken pins though a few folks have accidentally bent them -- you can bend them right back and get back to work. For $30 to $50, they do the job well and are an economical interface solution. We've been asked to build a more rugged cable, so we recently began offering a right-angle connector option on all of our 7-pin cables (except our 7-Pin-Coax-I/O cable -- the "Y" cable -- we hope to have that ready to go soon). Unlike our straight connector that stands out from the recorder, the new right-angle plug exits the D8 (or D3 or D7) towards the recorder's rear (like the Sony plug); the cable hugs the recorder's chassis. If you're bouncing the deck or the cable around, it is much less susceptible to bending and pulling out. And if you like, you can secure it to the D8 with a piece of tape -- there's no way it would ever pull out unless someone made a concerted effort. It takes us a bit more effort to manufacture, so each right-angle plug adds $10 to the cost of a cable. Even with that extra cost, Core Sound cables are much less expensive than any alternative and do the job well. As with all Core Sound products, they come with our usual 30 day money-back trial offer -- we get very, very few back. For more details about our cables, please see our Web page or send email. From: Bob Velkov <Bob.Velkov@par.univie.ac.at> Subject: ? Sony 59ES transport mod Date: Tue, 1 Apr 1997 15:27:09 +0200 (MET DST) Hi DAT-heads! After two and a half years the transport problem finally appeared also on my Sony DTC-59ES DAT deck. I've got lucky that it was still under the 3 years ESPRIT waranty and got it to the service center. After a week they've returned it to me, but after hearing all the horror stories in the past, I was wondering if there is some way to check whether they have applied the described transport mod, or just cleaned it and did other not useful stuff... What makes me worry is that I have only 3 months left of the warranty. I would be very thankful if anyone could tell me what should I check for? Thanks a lot in advance!
