You don't need anything special to go coax into a D-5. A simple
cable with a male RCA on one end and a male XLR on the other
will do. Maybe you can find it at a guitar store. I bought mine at
Full Compass when I bought the deck. It was about $10.00.
Email me if you want more info on the D-5.

Hi all,
I too have traded with Dave before, with out a hitch. In early may we set
up a trade for a Bela Fleck show, and I sent the tapes out. He indicated to
me that he would be out of town for 5 days, and send the tapes before he
left. That was the *last* time I heard from him. I thought, "ok, some
pleople are slow, or maybe he ran into a deck problem etc etc". After
reading Duncan's post this morning, I gave him a call. A Father? answerd
and indicated he had no idea where Dave was, and abruptly hung up on me. I
will call back later. Maybe he really got abducted. Oh well, I hate to
write it off as a loss, but it looks that way.
Thanks

I'm looking for any input on the use of parabolic dishes for micing
ambient and distant audio. I am planning on purchasing one and will be
using it with a Sony TCD-D8. If anyone has any experience in this type
of field work, I'd greatly appreciate any advice or information you might
have concerning ideal/proper uses, best mics to use, etc.

Thought I'd prompt anyone going to see
the Allman Brothers in the next week about
this hot blues guitarist out of Houston.
Mark May and The Agitators are opening about
six shows for the Allmans, starting last night.
May actually was one of a pool of guitarists
who was asked to tryout for the spot vacated
by Warren Haynes of Gov't Mule. He plays a score
of really cool originals from his album "Call
On The Blues" and his upcoming release.
So roll some tape for these boys if you're
at an Allman show this week. If you don't like
it, let me know and we'll work something out.
I'd dearly love to get my hands on some more of his
live act.

In this age of lessening customer service and the resulting multitude of
posts relating to such, I thought I would pass on a great experience I
had recently.
I bought a Lucid PCI24 digi soundcard a few weeks ago and, on the day it
arrived, spent many hours pulling my hair out trying to get it to work. I
eventually concluded that it was a bum card from the get go. So, I gave
Lucid Technology (the manufacturer) a call, explained the process at
which I determined it was probably a bad device, and found that they
agreed with my assessment.
The quickly and efficiently sent me a new one and made it very easy to
process the bum card. (Though I did pay shipping. I probably could have
gotten out of that, but was so euphoric due to the great service that I
didn't argue). Ever since, I have been happily wasting hours and hours
transferring and editing my DAT tapes to disk and eventually CDR.
In both email and voice communication they stood behind their product and
were happy to help.
Thanks Lucid!
Mike
Could this good service be related to the fact that they are a Canada

Subject: SBM-1 Price / Preamp questions
Date: Wed, 2 Jul 1997 12:11:04 -0700 (PDT)
Someone was recently asking about the best price on an SBM-1. The Oade's at
Hi-Fi have them in stock for $400. Not sure if this is the cheapest but they
are good guys if you don't want to deal with the "that's the price without
the case, box, and ac adapter" type of dealer.
I have some pre-amp questions just out of curiosity:
On the inside, is the Beyerdynamic the _same_ as the Sonosax? At
least one dealer of the two has hinted at this here on DAT-heads in
the past. I know the Beyer has fixed gain settings (vs variable on
the Sonosax) and different outputs. Aside from this, are they
different? The Sonosax is from Switzerland? One increadibly beautiful
country but everything there is _way_ expensive!
What about the Lunatec preamp? I don't know many people who use this
and have never seen one or read any specs on it. What kind of outputs
does it have? What kind of gain settings? How many batteries does it
use and how long do they last. How big is it? Does it have
transformers and if so, what kind? How much does it cost? Who sells
it?
I'm totally happy with my Aerco but I'm just curious...

At the Charlotte show, we were allowed board patches for moe., but were
unplugged afterwards and told that would be it. We were not allowed to
patch for Hornsby (apparantly McNally said no go).
We were told earlier in the afternoon that Hornsby would allow patches, so
YMMV.
Hope this helps.

It occurs to me that we're trying to judge this new Kao tape that almost no
one knows anything about, much less tried it. Hell, we don't even know how
much more Kao will charge for it. :) Kao _says_ it's better with hotter
temperatures than their standard-grade DDS tape. How it really compares to
other brands is something that only time will tell.
I'm willing to give Kao a chance (but at the same time, I'm not going to be
first in line at Terrapin to get a batch).
The first time I read the Kao/Terrapin press release, I missed that it's
going to be a certified DDS tape. This might give some of the DAT-only
purists something to complain about, but at the same time, it was
apparently _designed_ for DAT decks. (It also probably makes more financial
sense for Kao to make it a DDS tpae. That way, they can sell the same tape
both to DAT-heads and computer people, with no need for redundant products
or marketing plans. Still, I'm sure some computer people will pause when
seeing this new product ("Wasn't the old Kao good enough?"). The
photographic film industry has similar problems, with several (possibly
redundant) product lines for both amateurs and pros. Just look at the
product offerings on Kodak's web site.)

No, and strict S/PDIF level conversion is not needed for many/most
applications. I don't recall hearing about a single digital audio
device that wouldn't accept the Sony portable DAT output levels. We've
found that most devices can feed the Sony portable DAT inputs with the
exception of the oldest Sony DAT decks, a few soundcards and some CD
players.
If you have a Sony D3/D7/D8 and are feeding or taking a feed from
another Sony D3/D7/D8, it hardly makes sense to go through two level
conversions just to get back to where you started.
If your application needs strict S/PDIF levels, we recommend using the
Sony interfaces (RL-DA10 or RM-D3K) or using a translator box like our
Digital Format Translator.
