Just an observation, AAA Camera Exchange is good for something. I took my
issue of Pop. Photography to the Guitar Center in Dallas, TX and got my D8
for $545 before tax. (I love places that will beat any national advertised

Folks, I have a set of brand new CSBs for sale that I've had as a back-up
and have never used, so I'm looking to get rid of them. This is a
special pair that Len made up for me with the wires coming out the back
end of the capsules (instead of through the underbelly of it), with no
clips. They are perfect for putting inside a bandana or to snake through
a pair of "croakies" or other eye-glass holders. Further details on
request. Highest bidder takes'em. They are in perfect condition.

Peaks over -3 are not too high! When recording, peaks of "0" are
completely acceptable as long as "over" does not light. On playback,
there's no real way to distinguish "0" and "over," so if "0" is
frequently lit, you can assume it was over.
I've noticed (and others concur) that the D8 level indicators read a
bit high, in other words, "over" on the D8 is not truely "over" --
you have about another dB or two to spare!
This can be easily verified by plugging the digital output of the D8
into another deck (with accurate meters), and looking at the same
tone on the D8 and another deck...
Or, for non-techie's with Sony home decks, take a tape that went
"over" occasionally on the D8, play the whole thing on a Sony deck
checking "margin," and you'll notice that the margin never even gets
up to zero.
Of course, if it does, then your tape really was over.

P.s. I can't tell you how to fix digital distortion, but if you have
loud analog distortion in the bass (marcsound mikes), just turn the
bass way down and that helps...

> iii) If you go from 32 kHz LP 12 bits to 32 kHz SP 16 bits, tis still
> a clone, but why bother and waste tape?
There are a few good reasons for doing this, mostly due to the fact
that SP tapes are more widely compatible than LP tapes.
1. LP tapes won't play on Panasonic decks or any true pro decks
(except sone Sony's), while 32K SP tapes are ok.
2. Sony LP often (not always) causes problems when played back on
Fostex/Tascam/Pioneer LP decks (and vice versa).
I make many original recordings in LP (especially stealth shows --
anyone who thinks they can get cohearent 15K>up sounds from mikes
clipped to their glasses is dreaming) but I usually trade them in
SP. There are two basic ways to do this. I used to copy LP tapes
through analog cables to 44.1; this method has the advantage that it
"hides" the fact that the tape was ever in LP, and it also lets you
adjust volume/EQ if necessary.
However, you will lose the start_ID's.
Therefore, for satellite and radio shows with multiple bands, it has
become more common for me to clone LP tapes to 32K SP, which
preserves the exact bits and start_ID's. Also, most modern CD
recorders and the ZA-2 card can take 32K without any problem.
One potential problem with 32K SP tapes is that if someone clones
them to a deck set to "LP" without realizing it, they will get an LP
copy.

Since I'm not about to start cloning all of my 90m DATs onto 60m DATs as
backup (at 2 50s for 1 90 no less), what do folks recommend as the best
solution for playing 90m DATs. It's my bet that it's not small low cost
portable machines (Look for a for-sale offer for 2-3 D7s when I get an answer
to this question).
I have a slight bent towards Sony for personal, service-related reasons, but
I'm open-minded (to some things at least).

> Getting equipment into a
> venue is the EASY part, not getting caught is the challenge!
Disagree. You should be able to tape completely inconspicuously. If
not, your gear is too big or your technique is wrong. You should
NEVER have to look at your gear more than once, and even that is
optional.
Deliberately record too low! You can always raise the level later,
much better than checking the level constantly, maybe re-adjusting it
during the set (bad), and maybe getting caught.
Consider how much more difficult it is to videotape without being
caught: first, your camera must be out constantly, probably held to
your face, and it's much larger and more obvious than any kind of
mike (the front of the lens reflects light too). And second, even
shows that allow audio taping usually don't allow video taping, so
it's even harder to get permission...
Yet, virtually all bands do get videotaped....

Hey all,
I recently returned from the Phish summer tour taping with a DA-P1. I hooked
the DA-P1 to my stereo and they all sound great. When I try to spin to
analog for trades, they sound like shit with a high end hum. I tried
everything, changed the RCA cables (from the analog out) and cleaned the
heads on my analog deck (wet and dry). Am I doing something wrong?

First a specific note then a general one...For any Canadian DAT-heads
who might be passing through Ottawa or anyone who already lives here, I
got my D-cell pack made at a place called Alexander Battery
(613-230-7117).
I purchased the pack and the plug (total cost, $5 at Radio Shack) and
got
one of their techs to do the wiring and soldering. Cost for bench time
$15...total
cost $20 Canadian. Not a bad deal.
Now for the general...I ran my D8 off a brand new set of D's for all
6 sets of the Great Went last weekend without a hint of problems...and
anyone
who was there can tell you it was cooolllllld Sunday night. I even
rewound
my tapes for listening between sets. I'd say it ran for a good 10+ hours
without running out...of course they had a chance to get the voltage
back up
overnight so I can't say that they'd run 10 hours consecutively. Just
thought
y'all might like to know...

IMHO, no, the D8 is not good for much of anything other than live
situations.. A lot of people use it as a 2nd deck, but I wouldn't expect it
to live very long if you do use it that way (ie, under 500 hrs).. once
again, IMHO, you're almost better off with 2 Sony consumer decks or maybe
(to splurge) a DA20 ($750) and a Sony consumer deck (~$500 if lucky) than
risking damaging the D8.. AFAIK, it's also the hardest thing to fix if it
breaks, so you want all the wear and tear going to your other decks..

The "over" detector doesn't necessarily flash at the first
distortion. Some decks require multiple consecutive max readings to
set it.

Three consecutive 0 samples implies the signal went over, and 2
consecutive gives an extremely high probability.

I'm pretty new to DAT and all, but I was under the impression that the
only way to set the recording level too high would be to go over 0dB, at
which point you are clipping the signal, eh? I've got a few DATs that
peak at 0dB, and they sound great to me.
Once you introduce distortion, it's incredibly difficult to get rid of
it.

The Otari DTR-8S will do the same thing. Incidentally, the original
Tascam DA-20 could read these track titles written with the Otari and
would display them upon playback but apparently didn't have the option
of writing them. Looks like they fixed it with MKII.
BTW, after seeing all the D5 vs DA-20 messages, I'd like to add a few
kind words for the DTR-8S. It's a great machine with a very clean
interface, built upon the same Pioneer platform. Anyone looking for a
new DAT should consider this unit.

SGI's datman program provides a DAT transport control panel interface.
Like cdman, datman transfers audio data across the SCSI bus
to and from the built-in audio subsystem on your
workstation. You can listen to an audio DAT through speakers
or headphones connected to your computer.
I have done some research on this, and have found: The only confirmed
DAT-DDS drive that supports digital audio over the SCSI bus is one that
is bought from SGI. (Silicon Graphics) They have special firmware which
performs audio tasks. They were originally Archives, but were bought
out by Conner, which was bought out by Seagate. The second requirement
is that the tape have a consistent absolute timecode written on the
whole tape. Third, you would need a program similar to the one
mentioned.
I would attempt to write such a program, but I don't have the time. I
already spend all my time working at a job I don't get paid for. :) I
doubt anyone here would want to buy an SGI DAT drive, either. They're
prices are just a LITTLE outrageous.
