From: KevRobb@flink.com Subject: The Great Went Tree Structure is FINALLY Here Date: Tue, 16 Dec 1997 22:53:59 +0000 Friends I wish to extend, first, my heartfelt apologies to all who have patiently awaited this tree structure. It's been a rough 2 months. No crying, no complaining, no excuses. Without further adieu, the structure is laid out simply: 90/60 Meter DAT Trunk, then 60 Meter DAT Trunk, then the Analog structure. This tree should move smoothly as the top branch for the 90/60 trunk has seeds in hand already. I have no trades on my decks currently, so the other seeds should be spun within a matter of days, depending on the arrangements that are made concerning them. To those who wonder about the breakdown for analog tapes, I will be working with the D>A person and the top analog branches to decide what works best. The most important words to be spoken here tonight: Enjoy the Shows!!!!!!!!!! From: Jim Troy <JimTroy@aol.com> Subject: Cloning via hard disk Date: Wed, 17 Dec 1997 01:44:55 EST I'm trying to clone a DAT by recording from an SV-3800 through a Zefiro ZA2 card to a Syjet drive, then playing back the file and recording to DAT. Recording to disk seems to have gone fine, but on playback I get intermittent burst of diginoise -- a second or two in duration, about a half dozen per hour. Device Manager reports no conflicts, and I've used the task manager to shut down everything that might kick in in the background. Does anybody have any idea as to what might affect "read" but not "write" operations? Thanks, Jim
From: Kurt Vogel <kwv@chem.stanford.edu> Subject: FS: Sony WMD-DT1 DAT deck (reduced!) Date: Tue, 16 Dec 1997 23:19:11 -0800 (PST) I still have a Sony WMD-DT1 portable playback-only DAT deck for sale, with an IDS warrenty good until Februrary, 2001. $300 takes it, or I'd be happy to trade for a nice (big) color monitor. Perfect shape, works like a charm, nice neoprene case with belt-loop included! Email if interested. Thanks Kurt

From: Brett Paulin <rando@werple.net.au> Subject: WTB, SCMS Stripper, & Sp/dif I?O card info Date: Wed, 17 Dec 1997 22:07:16 +1100 Greetings DAT-Heads, A friend here in Australia is looking for a SCMS stripper to aid his cloning operations. I recently bought the format convertor kit from a fellow dat-heads user and was wondering if anyone else has a similair model, or commercial unit they would like to dispose of. He is using two sony D8's, one with an Optical (Toslink) cable, and the other has the RMK-D3 box, so the format convertor must have optical and coaxial capability. It would be nice if was powerable from 6V DC, since I built him a 4 output 6vdc supply to run his DATs.. And seeing as how its in Australia, any 110v stuff will need fiddling. If anyone has such a gadget for sale, please email me and let me know price and shipping so I can see if he's interested.. -- Also, someone recently mentioned they'd found a sound card with a SP/Dif I/O capability for $18. I went to the web-site they mentioned and had a look, and sure enough, it looks good.. but I'm suspicous of cheap clone stlye cards, and havent received a reply yet from the company thats selling them. the original poster said that he would post to DAT-heads with his experience on the cards functionality. Has he done this and I missed it ? Has anyone had any experience with this card ? Any information would be great.. Cant afford $500 (Aus) for Sp/dif I/O, which is the next cheapest card I've seen so far.. From: Jon Lax <jon_lax@grey.net> Subject: Re:HHB Tapes Date: Wed, 17 Dec 1997 08:57:11 -0500 I use only HHB audio tapes when mastering. I love them. Never had a problem with them and I trust them to keep my music safe for years. The purple cases also look cool. In Canada they are priced the same as Sony and Ampex DATs (Long and McQuade Toronto) I think they cost $cdn 12.00 for 95 min. Jon
From: "Scott Weinmann" <ir001488@mindspring.com> Subject: Lilith Fair live Pay per View Date: Wed, 17 Dec 1997 09:13:27 -0500 I caught the Lilith Fair ppv ($19.95) off of the DSS direct to DAT. Would it be inappropriate to trade this tape since it was a pay per view event? It is a great tape, and many people don't get DSS (broadcast digitally at same 48 Khz sampling rate as DAT) and therefore can't record it digital direct (and must go through Analog/digital conversion..) From: "Bruce Baier" <baierb@hotmail.com> Subject: Re: New: Radio Shack NiMH Batteries Date: Wed, 17 Dec 1997 06:25:11 PST In DAT-Heads Digest #923, H Scott Matthews writes: >2-pack of AA's: $10 (would need 2 packs for $20 to run my D7) >Charger: $15 (also recharges NiCds - has selector switch for >batt type) > >so a complete system would be $35. $25 for a D10. It could be as low as $10 for a D-100. After all, both the Sony and RS batteries are 1.2 volt NiMH and the Sony charger puts out a charge voltage of 1.2 volts. The difference is the Sony batteries are rated at 1300 mAh, RS at 1200 mAh. The RS batteries suggest charging at 600 mA for a 2-hour charge, 300 mA for a 4-hour charge (I think). The Sony charger puts out 650mA for a 2-hour charge. It shouldn't hurt the RS batteries, just charge them a bit quicker. From: Paul <pdelima@worldnet.att.net> Subject: PCM Reply-To: pdelima@worldnet.att.net Date: Wed, 17 Dec 1997 09:38:23 -0500 How popular ware PCM machines in the 1980's, as far as bands using them to record their live shows? I know the Dead used to record some of their shows straight to PCM from the board - at least I think they did. Did other bands use PCM machines, or was the technology considered not stable enough? Say from 1985 - 19989, would most rock bands record their live shows using a reel to reel? Anyone have any ideas on this one? Paul
From: AZawodny@mobile.bam.com Subject: Nobody Beats The Wiz ... Date: 17 Dec 97 09:33:47 EST I heard on the news today that NBTW is filing Chapter 11. So, what is the likely cause of this (is it a serious problem)? Is it the microphones or more likely some other component in the chain (extension cables, preamp, A/D etc.)? Nabil

From: Victor Yiu <vyiu@mail.utexas.edu> Subject: $18 Sound card w/digital IO Date: Wed, 17 Dec 1997 11:55:03 -0600 Here's just a little more about the the cheap sound card that Ben & I tried... The board was a simple design, basically controlled by an Sound Pro 1864 chip. The digital in and outs were just pinouts from the chip, labeled SPDIFI and SPDIFO. Assuming SPDIF standards are +-.5v, it may not have been a smart idea for us to input a D8 first (I think they're TTL 0-5v). We tried every combination, switching pins, and stuff, but still no digital input levels. We even tried a standard coax out from a JVC CD player, to no avail. In any case, the A/D D/A convertors to this board SUCKS. Best case S/N I could get was around 45db, and even at that, you could easily hear the harmonic distortion doing an A/D D/A. The card had a digital and analog mixer, claimed to be full duplex, had cheezy 3D sound enhancement (which was no more than an inverted signal of the other channel mixed back in), and used software wavetable synth. I think it would have had a chance to work if we tried the standard JVC CD player first before my D8. Then again, if it wouldn't have worked with my D8, it would have been useless for me, and still fairly useless for Ben. (Unless we find a way to make a coax out from a Sony DT790) Any questions, just ask.... kinda disappointed with this card. If anyone tries a standard SPDIF input first, just post... From: pkmin@rsc.rockwell.com Subject: Re:Shipping DATs in cold winter months Date: Wed, 17 Dec 1997 10:12:57 -0800 Am I just being paranoid? Can the tape get condensation on it and then deposit that onto the heads and cause problems? Any thoughts? IMHO the biggest reason why to let tapes warm up after bringing em in from the cold mailbox is not for fear of damaging the deck, but rather for fear of snapping (or just damaging/crinkling if you're lucky) the tape. I'll spare you and leave my out my reasoning why. Pete
From: pkmin@rsc.rockwell.com Subject: Re:sampling rates Date: Wed, 17 Dec 1997 10:31:59 -0800 don't you ever crank your stereo up so you can feel the good vibrations? i'm sure, especially with a nice subwoofer, that there are low frequencies that you feel and don't "hear." I not too long ago bought a 12" velodyne subwoofer with adjustable frequency cutoff. I was listening to tapes on only the subwoofer and could adjust it to play only frequencies below anywhere from 20-140Hz(volume adjustable too). There is something to be said about feeling bass. While I think for *most* people any bass that can be felt can also be heard, the "feeling" part of it is more impt to the overall "listening experience" than is the "hearing"part of it. I don't have experience with freq's below 20 Hz though. Pete

Yes (of course D7's can't defeat SCMS though so you *may*run into probs) "2) Other than Sony, where can I buy these and how much are they?" I know The Dat Store carries them, probably others such as Oade Brothers and Klay Anderson Audio also. No offense but when are people gonna stop asking where they can buy stuff. Do your own homework.
