From: "@ri" <ari@cloud9.net> Subject: M1 patching problems.... Date: Tue, 21 Apr 1998 14:35:48 -0400 All, I was wondering if anybody has run into the problem with patching an M1 and has found a solution to it (other than running an analog patch, that's not a solution in my book). I have heard that it's the voltage difference that causes the problem, but I have heard from others that that is incorrect. Here was the set-up and the problem from last night. I was at the String Cheese show with my M1, patched out of a D8 and it was working perfectly, but when I tried to patch in another D8, that deck read "No Input". Here was the whole line last night: Neumann KM184's > Oade Pre-Amp > DA-P1 > Pollotnik modified RKDA10 Cable > D8 > Pollotnik modified RKDA10P cable > my M1. That set-up was working like a charm. When I tried to patch in my friend's D8 out of my M1 with a monster cable connected to an Oade modified RKDA10 cable, the patch did not work at all. I was using Radio Shack barrels (yes, I know, radio shack makes faulty equipment), but they have given me no problems before and it's definitely not the barrels b/c I tested them out. I doubt if even radio shack could mess up a simple barrel. So that's the dilemma. Is there any solution? I am pretty sure that if I threw the D8 in front of my M1, all would have been well, but this problem could get pretty annoying at large shows with long digital lines of decks. I've also heard the problem might be one of just hooking up two sony decks digitally (ie the problem might happen sometimes just hooking up two D8's). Any info. is greatly appreciated. From: "Robert Franklin Gaines, III" <rfg4m@server2.mail.virginia.edu> Subject: Re: DMB... Improv/Variety?? Date: Tue, 21 Apr 1998 15:07:26 -0400 (EDT) Personally speaking, I think Dave Matthews has been getting stale for years now. All of his songs sound the same anymore. Though his 4/18 show had a couple of new songs that were okay to hear, some others literally sucked! He just doesn't seem to have the drive to become the superior musician that others have become. As for shows that are must haves... I would say only some of his real early stuff, maybe from Frat parties here at UVA, or early shows at Trax here in C'ville. They would be your best bet, though I havn't found the drive to get them myself. The only show i have is the Blacksburg show with Tim Reynolds (Acoustic) on Schoeps mics. It is definitely the most clear tape i have heard of him. It is FOB and sounds great. hope this helps you or enlightens you. rfg4m@virginia.edu
From: Steve Babyak <babyak@epix.net> Subject: Sony PCM-1 Date: Tue, 21 Apr 1998 15:32:24 -0400 I've been lurking here for a few months and i've got some questions concerning the M-1 portable. I'm interested in this deck in particular because of its SCMS-defeatable feature, since my Sony DTC-670 has SCMS. I plan on using it to patch out at shows, so I'm also going to get the 7 pin>coax I/O cable. The prices for this cable range from $65 for the Coresound to $150 for the Oade. I heard that the M1/D100 have lower output voltages on the digital outs than the D7/D8. As a result the M1/D100s are placed at the end of the daisychain. I'm not sure if i'm comfortable with this. One reason is if someone's batteries above me, then i lose signal. Marc Nutter from Sonic Sense told me that Sony has now developed a better digital cable that eliminates this problem. He carries the modified version that has digital in and out for $119. What's the difference in these cables besides price? Does this cable really address the problem concerning the M-1's lower out put voltage? Are Y connectors often used to split the signal and get higher up in the chain? Do you lose much quality when doing this? How about the M-1 overall? Has there been any problems? I'd appreciate anyone's help. Steve
From: noyes_ed@sonalysts.com (Ed Noyes) Subject: Re: Audio Alchemy DTI V.2 Date: Tue, 21 Apr 1998 15:51:24 -0400 This could be considered a pretty silly question... please forgive me in advance! Can anyone tell me about the AA DTI V2.0? I picked up one thinking it was a DAC, but it appears to be a junction box / reclocking device instead. Is this correct? Can someone provide more details on its purpose and application. Also, what does it do with respect to scms bit (wishfully asked). Please email me privately as I don't always get to read the digest. Thanks!

Also, the TCD-D7 includes an AC adapter. Plus, I will throw in analog XLR>RCA cables, both left and right in and out for connection to a consumer stereo. Thanks, sorry for the multiple posts.

We will be running a dsbd, I ran one there for Merl a couple of months ago. I'm sure it will be fine Saturday there is really no great place to set up mics. This is a nice huge club, with a smoking area <G>. It is adjacent to the beach and should be a killer time. Just remember to bring the deck for a sweet patch. if you need more info just drop me a line nick@tapetree.com nick@tapetree.com - www.tapetree.com - Coming To Web Radio May '98

I've only used the external battery Pack once and am wondering how long it will last for an M-1, so if anyone has experience, please let me know. I'm assuming that it will last for about 15 hours. From: Andrew Foster <Andrew_Foster@infoworld.com> Subject: Core Sounds Binaurals sample tape Date: Tue, 21 Apr 1998 14:21:55 -0700 hi there, it seems like people post asking about these mics all the time. i know there is a sample tape you can get from Len, but i'd also like to offer up a show i recorded with these mics to anyone who's considering buying a pair. the tape is of Phish @ vegas, 12/6/96. i came in during wilson and didn't get the deck running until the third song, but i got the rest after that. i was near the back of the hall for the first set and about 15 rows back for the second. both sets sound quite good...it's one of the best tapes i've made with these mics where i DIDN'T have to get extremely close to the sound source. you can hear some drunken frat boys (how that demographic slice EVER got into phish, i don't know) on the tape at a number of places, but overall it's pretty clean. let me know if you're interested. the show takes up a 90m tape. andrew

From: "Marcus Leatham" <leatham@nortel.ca> Subject: Carry Bag for D-100 Date: 21 Apr 1998 19:05 EDT Somebody asked about choosing a bag for the portable DAT recorder. I found a great little bag at Wal-Mart made by East Bay. It is padded cordura nylon, black color with embroidered pattern on front. Lots of color options available, same model. It came with a shoulder strap. The front compartment just fits my D-100 with its leatherette cover, and that compartment has a plastic buckle to hold it closed. Every- thing else uses YKK zippers. Under the D-100 pouch, the bag zips open around the perimeter and there is a big storage area for cables, earphones, mic mounting bar, and mic clips. The back zips open to a big storage area but there are pouches etc in this area -- one pouch holds both my mics, another pouch holds a spare DAT (60m of course) with a velcro closure, one pouch holds 2 spare AA batteries perfectly. There are a couple smaller zippered pouches that I don't use. The bag was <= $10 and I'm really happy. Approx. size 6" W X 10" L X 6" D. The bag and a mic stand are all I need for taping. Good Luck -Marcus

Oh, Klay... Just look at the pictures and you'll see that the Sennheiser MZS 20-1 doesn't look like a Rycote _at all_ - different shock mount, different handle, different baskets (larger -> more efficient), different= windjammers, different everything. And it fits any mic length by just changing the space between the two horseshoe mounts (and the basket, a costly operation - better to buy only the longest one you expect to need= ). The Rycote can't do this. I have an older MZW 426, and also use a Rycote at times, which is much lighter & smaller but also less efficient in fast wind. But the weight of= the MZW on the end of a 3.50 m pole is tremendous, so the Rycote is generally more workable except in very heavy wind. I hope Sennheiser made= the switch to lighter materials for the MZS 20-1. Marc Nutter wrote : >> The other option, for SCHOEPS users, is the hollow B 5 D. By far the most efficient windscreen available, except the ze= ps of course. Needless to say, it's expensive (round $200 each ?). Won't wor= k very well on serious wind though ; then you can still use the trick of holding a large umbrella between the mics and the direction the wind come= s from (it really works !). BTW the W20 can also be used on an Oktava MC-012 (same diameter than the= Schoeps) or with those old Schoeps with the funny flared capsule, but the= n don't buy the W20R1 - which has the windjammer but can't be opened to let= you put the mic in by the front. In this case you have to order the W20 _plus_ the windjammer (the set is called W20+R1 I was told). This point = is not mentioned in the Schoeps docs. = Also, the smaller W5 and the B5D can't be opened at all - so one can't us= e them with flared mics. I've seen a W5 and a W20 on Neumann KM100s (diamet= er 21 mm) but it takes filing the windscreen to achieve this feat. Wagner One wrote : >> Money is an object too, though I do want to get something worthwhile. My= experience is that all the foam ones are mostly useless, and that the sma= ll baskets don't really justify their price. The W20 works really well in ve= ry light wind, but it really needs its windjammer when it gets heavier. Real= ly heavy wind can be cured only by a serious zep with windjammer (I once recorded wind turbines on the seashore with these - no problem at all). Well, anyway this is my experience with the Oktava which is very sensitiv= e to the wind, your mics may be more forgiving. Hope this helps, Jean-Luc.

In the event that this occurs, I am writing to ask if anyone else in the DC area would be able to fit me in at this late date. I would like to be at the Fest by start time on Thursday, but if this unfortunate event does indeed unfold, I will take any offers I get! I will of course contribute to transportation costs and will only need a ride THERE, as I am pretty sure I can hook up with my group after arrival. I can also offer tapes of the Fest and such if there is interest in that.
