This is a public service announcement to Goldenhawk CDRWin users. When
you use the Extract Disc/Tracks/Sectors to Image File: Extract Mode:
Disc Image/Cue Sheet, the cue sheet created by CDRWin adds index's on
every track after track 1. Index 00 on tracks 2 and 3 below are not on
the cd I was copying, CDRWin added them. So, what I am getting at here
is if you want to make a 'copy' of a cd, and not something that
'resembles' the original cd, *you must delete the INDEX 00 XX:XX:XX
lines* as I have shown corrected below. It is reported that the
addition of these 2 sec 'pregap without silence' index marks have
something to do with the red book standard. The way I see it this is
not an 'image' of the disc since things have been added that are not on
the disc. BTW thanks to Andrew R. for noticing this quirk.

AQUARIUM UNIT TO THE RESCUE
Bassist Oteil Burbridge had a busy night March 28. After finishing the last
show of an 18-night stand with the Allman Brothers Band at the Beacon
Theater, he rushed downtown to the TriBeCa nightclub Wetlands to host an
all-night jam session featuring a reunion of the original members of
another group he plays in, Aquarium Rescue Unit.
Burbridge and original ARU drummer Jim "Apt. Q259" White were joined by
guitarists Col. Bruce Hampton, Atlanta's answer to Captain Beefheart, and
Jimmy Herring, part of the highly successful "Jazz Is Dead" Grateful Dead
interpretive group.
The reconstituted ARU performed "Compared To What," "Fixin' To Die," "Time
Is Free" and "Basically Frightened" from the band's 1992 debut album.
The ensuing jam session lasted until dawn, with Burbridge joined by Gov't
Mule bassist Allen Woody, Parliament/Funkadelic keyboardist Bernie Worrell
and
various guitarists, percussionists and vocalists on a wide array of material.
The set ranged from "Space Is the Place" and "Outer Space Incorporated" by
Sun Ra to material from "Love Of A Lifetime," Burbridge's first solo album.

DAT-Heads,
I just taped The Get Up Kids, an exciting and amusing emo-core band from
Oklahoma last night. It was quite fun and great, energetic music. Taped
10' directly at the left stack with CSB's to an M1. Sounds terrific. I'm
interested in trades for Smashing Pumpkins, Ednaswap, and Hum, DAT and

FYI, Consumer reports has done extensive testing of battery life in
high drain electronics (e.g. portable CD players, dat machines, etc.)
And have rated Radio Shacks _alakalines_ as the _BEST_.
Main reason, High turn over, RS sells more batts than any other
brand. I started using them when the Duracell multi paks I was
buying at a large home discount center, started going dead faster
than usual.
I have been able to run the RS alkalines for over 3.5-4 hrs in my
SBM1 over non consecutive days and in one stretch.
To boot, they have Batt. discunt cards that get you discounts on each
purchase and free batts every third purchase.
I'm in no way affiliated with RS, just thought I would pass on the
info cause I was sick of wasting $ on the _brand_ name batts.
happy taping, peace, tr
btw, for long term taping in D100/M1s the Eveready lithiums are the
choice, I haven't had the nerve to try the RS alkalines for that yet.

This isn't quite true. The real problem is with the Philips, Marantz,
and Tascam models that stop after 18 seconds of relative quiet
(NOT requiring silence). Earlier HHB and Pioneer models would
stop after roughly that length of total digital silence. The new HHB
and Fostex models allow the auto-stop for total digital silence to
occur instantly, after 10 seconds, or never.
Unintended auto-stop never was a problem with the
Pioneer/HHB/Fostex/Otari models, and it's clearly a bug, even if an
intentional one, of the Marantz CDR-630/Philips/Tascam models.
(The Marantz CDR-615/620/640 only stop on full digital silence).

Howdy folks, a while back there was a discussion regarding battery life
using the rechargebles included with the d100/ m-1. Has any one used these
batteries in an SBM succesfully. Also is there a general concensus that the
SBM lasts longer when used only as an A/D converter and not a mic amp? I am
getting 3 hours plus on energizer "advanced formula". Thanks for any input.
Also I have a couple of pairs of 1.5 meter balanced interconnects with
neutric connectors and xlr>rca if anyone is interested, reasonable or will
trade for blanks. Finally JGB 2-4-82 extra for the first newbie.

Figure that with the Radio Shack #23-525 NiMH 1200 ma rated AA cells about 2.5
hours Max is likely (not verified).
I believe Klay was also carrying a good brand with a bit more capacity than
these Radio Shack cells.
However, I am currently trying to source a suitable 1500+ ma NiMH AA cell that
should provide closer to 3.5 hours maximum on the SBM-1 and well over 4 hours
on the D100/M1 decks.
While several sources for these exist, the positive tab is not extended enough
to reliably contact most 'safety keyed' or recessed + terminal battery
holders. Special Ordering large quantities with the proper terminal
configuration seems necessary.
Anyone interested in future notification on availability these "super
capacity" NiMH AA cells please send me E-mail with "NiMH Super Cells" in the
subject line so to be notified if this becomes a reality.
My site has guidelines on how to best manage charging and maintaining NiMH
cells at: <A HREF="http://www.sonicstudios.com/batsys98.htm">
http://www.sonicstudios.com/batsys98.htm</A> look at the page end for these
tips.
Also, externally connected rechargeable Lead/Acid battery systems suitable for
powering the SBM-1 for extended periods are also available on the same page.
Prices are a bit less than is listed for 3APB/5APB systems.

Tangerine Dream want to announce their performance at this year's
"KlangArt
Festival", a four- day multimedial happening of modern contemporary
music. The
festival will take place from June 10th to June 13th, 1999, in the
"Stadthalle" of
"KlangArt Festival" and various other locations around this German
town. Tangerine
Dream will perform there on Saturday, June 12th, at 9:00 PM, as the
headlining act.
They will play a previously unreleased piece called "Mars Polaris". This
is the
first time since 1982 that TD will present their audience a completely
new
production in concert.
"Mars Polaris" will be approximately 100 minutes long. Edgar and
Jerome Froese
have worked on this composition since August 1998. The journey of NASA's
spacecraft,
"Mars Polar Lander", to the red planet as well as some still mostly
unknown aspects
about this most important of Earth's neighboring planets provide the
inspirational
base for this musical story.

Well since the software is free (mp3.com), and mp3 files are free, have a
listen yourself. I love them personally, since I work in the Information
Technology biz, I can run them off my laptop all day long. No need for
carrying cd's or brining in a boom box. This company actually has an mp3
server with ton's of dead, phish, day by the river, mediski martin & wood,
and more. Of course it is hidden from the execs... (-:
Last night I played Day By the River's all mp3 CD "Watermarks" for a local
DJ/Programming director at the Altanta Station Z-93. He had heard about
MP3 but not yet listened to one. He was floored, and couldn't beleive
that it was not an audio CD. I think he is now hooked. He saw the beauty
of being to store DAT shows in a computer ( Jeff Dunham is a huge Jam
music fan and Deadhead).
If you want to download a couple MP3's to check it out, Day By the River
has MP3's of their music, both live and studio at
http://www.daybytheriver.com/samples.html

It depends heavily on the bit rate used for encoding, and the type of music.
I have encoded a number of MP3s for my daughter's band's web page, plus some
more for listening test purposes. At high rates (128kbps) from a decent
encoding program, they sound OK. I can still hear some of the lossy
encoding artifacts (varying from a gargling sound to some non-specific
modulation effects), but it's no worse than FM radio from a typical
compressed pop station. Well, maybe not THAT bad...
At lower bit rates, the sound deteriorates rapidly. I was trying to avoid
having people DL a 5MB file just to hear the band's music, so I cranked the
bit rate down to 48kbps and used joint stereo. It took an hour of
experimentation to find an encoder that didn't introduce horrible and loud
modulation on the signal. It's still there in the samples I uploaded to the
web page, but at least it's tolerable and the users have an endurable wait
for it to load.
Overall, I'd say that until the encoding algorithms get a lot better, or
unless you can tolerate a huge bandwidth (OK for the portable MP3 players I
guess), the recording industry has nothing to fear as far as audiophiles go.
It sure isn't a threat for me. :-)
