If DVD Audio doesn't include an option for a red >book layer, it perhaps deserves to fail. According to a Usenet post I just found, purportedly from a Dolby guy ( http://x15.dejanews.com/[ST_rn=qs]/getdoc.xp?AN=415143072&search=thread&CONT EXT=923615834.803012678&HIT_CONTEXT=923614909.793116765&HIT_NUM=33&hitnum=5 ), DVD-A will have a Red Book (regular audio CD) option, but they don't talk about it very much because it adds to the cost and it is "as yet unproven". The poster alledges that there are benefits of high-rate PCM over Sony/Philips Direct Stream Digital (DSD) for SACD, but the post doesn't specify what they are. (One benefit of DSD: It can resample to virtually any PCM rate without the lossy qualities of PCM resampling. This should make it very usefull in the studio someday, even if SACD doesn't make it.) But I know that some people on this > list swear by old card catalogs for high-volume dat-storage, and thought I Have one of these and was the one who told Scott about them. I bought mine from a University library fundraiser for $135 at auction and thought I got a good price. $10.00 is a Steal!!! The drawers are adjustable using metal sliders. 60 drawers = 32 DATs per drawer. They sit sideways and you don't have to remove the brass bar that runs down the center of each drawer. The drawers on mine are dovetailed hardwood. Very nice construction. The brass plates on each drawer are worth $7 each new. Card catalogs are a very unique way to store DAT tapes. Definately a conversation piece!! The ultimate in recycling. They don't work Quite as well for cassette but it does work. You have to take the rods out. Shipping would be a problem because they are heavy as lead. :( Jeff
From: Michael Hackett <mhackett@supercity.ns.ca> Subject: Re: APS CD-R any good? Date: Fri, 9 Apr 99 01:51:14 -0500 >From: Bob Olhsson, olh@hyperback.com > >The newest Plextor is even better AND is a tray type! In what ways is it better? I happen to like caddies, and was planning on getting a PlexWriter 4/12max, but my main concern is the quality of the audio burns. Since it seems that 2x is often the best speed for burning audio CDs, the 8x drive didn't seem to offer me anything. But if the new drive can really produce better quality CD-Rs, I'd be interested. -- Michael

From: ChillyBe@aol.com Subject: SCI - Patch bay consistency... Reply-To: ChillyBe@aol.com Date: Fri, 9 Apr 1999 02:23:25 EDT Went to the SCI show 2 night ago at The Majestic - Detroit, MI, and had a blast... Taped the show... house sound guy was tending the board... didn't really see a any SCI personal at the board once the show started... not sure if this is protocal for them or not. The Nutter donated rig running that night was pretty dissapointing... Not sure who was responsible for the "patch bay"... Whoever it was asked a kid standing in front of us not to let anyone set up a stand in front of the board... Saw him on the side of the stage during the show... Not a very pleasant person. He was running Earthworks SR77??? Asked the crew and they had no idea exactly what kind of Earthworks... into a TL Audio stand alone pre-amp.. never heard of it... had nice knobs though... He said the Lunatech the band uses blew up... **Kick down a new one Marc** ... Mics were placed 25-30 feet from stage about 12ft high... The levels were WAY too low...like -30db.... sound ok once you turn your stereo up to like 6 or 7... too bad cuz Karl Denson was tearing it up ...levels come up a lil bit a few songs later... I am sure that our taping of the band isn't the soundmans top priority, but if your gonna delegate that we either tape behind you (no FOB) or from you (patch Bay) it would be nice to have a consitently good mix... The soundman should be capable of at least getting that together for the fans/tapers (we all listen to the tapes). I don't think thats asking too much for a little consistency... There were 10 or so tapers patched into the SCI patch bay who have mediocre at best tapes of that performance... I heard the tapes and I am being generous when I say they are mediocre... Fortunately I was not held back by debacle of the Bay.. nor the confines of the Section... But for those who are its not fair to have to play the lottery to get a decent tape. Anyone have troubles with patch bay? Just curious... Please save your flames for someone who cares... No holy wars please... Just my .02 cents... CB
