I sent him a money order up front (like about $90) and he then sent the tix (in a timely manner). I've never dealt with him other than this but he could have just kept the cash but instead sent out the tix. YMMV, good luck! Peace, Sean
From: Sean Cartwright <cart1@eznet.net> Subject: Anyone know Indigenous' taping policy? Date: Fri, 16 Apr 1999 07:44:46 -0400 Hi Again, Indigenous, from what little I've heard, a great sounding SRV type of sounding blues band (and from what else I understand, a band of brothers and sisters who are Native Americans from North Dakota). They will be in town (Rochester, NY) on Thursday April 29 and I would like to tape them. Have any of you heard of them and/or know what their taping policy is? They are not listed in the BTAT list. Thanks in advance for any responses! Peace, Sean

From: Steve Marshall <stevem@thenightowl.com> Subject: ISO: Neil Young - St Louis, 4/14/99 Date: Fri, 16 Apr 1999 07:34:14 -0500 Subject says it all. Unfortunately, we didn't get to catch the show (Neil's my wife's alltime favorite), so to compensate for missing the show, I'd love to get a copy for her. I'm a unidecker, so I would have to do B&P if anyone could be kind enough to spin me a copy. Thanks in advance... Steve
From: Martin Voelker <mvoelker@tufts.edu> Subject: portable phantom power for $80 Date: Fri, 16 Apr 1999 10:03:02 -0400 Noticed a new item in Musician's Friend catalogues: Whirlwind Portable Phantom Power. Provides 12 to 18Vdc using two 9V batteries, has LED indicators. Possibly sufficient for some some mikes, including older Sennheiser shotguns with impossible to find batteries. Please publish any experiences. Peace and Carrots, Martin
From: Jim Hoey <jim@etown.com> Subject: DVDs, MP3's and electronics Date: Fri, 16 Apr 1999 10:34:04 -0500 hey, I recently saw the message about DVD players and I thought I'd throw my 2 cents in...since I work at this site, take the info for what its worth, but if your interested, check out this link to a high-end Toshiba DVD review that comes highly recommended from someone who knows whats up in the industry. http://www.e-town.com/buy/theater/viddisc/articles/toshibasd9000kma.html The site is in a young stage and doesnt yet have that much info on taping and DAT portable equipment yet, but I'm working on that. A new version of the site goes up in June, and I hope that there will be alot more DAT related stuff by then. Sorry for the bandwidth..... From: "Larry J. Abballe" <abballe@sprynet.com> Subject: Ozric Tentacles Date: Fri, 16 Apr 1999 11:05:45 -0400 Hello all, Here's some updated Ozric Tentacles tour info: May 7 1999 8:00PM WETLANDS NEW YORK NY May 8 1999 8:00PM WETLANDS NEW YORK NY May 15 1999 9:00PM THEATRE OF LIVING ARTS PHILADELPHIA PA May 21 1999 9:00PM ODEON CLEVELAND OH www.tickemaster.com has this info. This band is great! A Progressive - Eastern - Reggae - Jazz fusion! And... they allow soundboard access. I'm not talking a mono hollow sounding feed. The soundman (does anyone know his name?) mixes a great sounding stereo patch. The shows I have by this band are by far the best sounding tapes in my collection. (Not to take anything away from the great tapes I have from Gary Davis.) I'm going to try to make it to one of the New York shows to tape. I'd like to go to both New York shows AND the Philly show but it's going to be hard enough to make it to 1 show (because my personal schedule sucks). I'd like to get as many, if not all, the shows from this tour as possible. Anyone taping them - please let me know. ** To anyone offended by this post and to those that feel ** this is lacking in DAT content please accept my apologies. All the best, Larry

From: "Scott Weber" <something_on@hotmail.com> Subject: Soundforge Corrups, Watch Out!!!!! Date: Fri, 16 Apr 1999 09:18:17 PDT I rebuilt my entire f*uking PC because I was getting audio glitching. Many PC literate and DAT/music literate folks gave me thousands of suggestions from replacing my hardware to tweaking Windows 98/NT. I painstakingly swapped out ALL of my PC's hardware, and reloaded my machine several times to no avail. Who would've ever thought it was software!! Well, it was. Soundforge XP 4.5 was corrupting my wave files everytime I would re-write the file (ie: EQ, normalize, etc...) I get glitch free audio with Samplitude, Cool Edit Pro and Wavelab everytime. So, watch out for corrupt versions of Soundforge out there!! I think it's a .dll issue of non-compatability. Anyway, Soudforge sucks, the other programs are not as "destructive", and are faster when manipulating recordings you will be burning to CD. So I flip the bird to Sonic Foundry, for costing me major $$ and time, and many bad CD burns......... From: MeandMrRay@aol.com Subject: Advice needed about mics. Reply-To: MeandMrRay@aol.com Date: Fri, 16 Apr 1999 12:14:16 EDT Hello Everyone, I was wondering if anyone had anything to say about AKG C-1000S mics. Would a pair of these make quality live recordings? I have a couple of MMW shows recorded with these and they sound pretty suite. Is around $300 a pair for mint condition used AKG C-1000S a good deal? Any other mics you would suggest over them for the price? Hope someone can shed some light. Thanks! Greg.
From: "Craig Hoffman" <Craig.Hoffman@disney.com> Subject: Limiter for DAT Date: Fri, 16 Apr 1999 09:54:19 -0700 Anyone know of a good, cheap stereo limiter or compressor that I can use with my Core Sound Binaurals and my D8 DAT portable? I generally record live acoustic classical music that goes from a whisper to glass shattering opera belts in the same song, so I need something to keep the quiet sections from being lost in noise and not distort loud sections. I was thinking it would be great to put some sort of limiter between my mics and the D8 so that I could turn levels up and still not distort during the occasional really loud sections. I don't want to do the compression after the fact because I end up amplifying noise. I am recording these to make demo CDs, and I want to make CDs that will work in any environment (like a car), so losing some dynamic range doesn't worry me. Any ideas? Radio Shack has an external battery that was designed to power portable CD players that operate on 2 AA batteries. M1s also run on 2 AA batteries - therefor this battery works on the M1. The battery plugs into the AC connector and can be recharged by the M1's AC adapter. RS claims that it can operate for up to 20 hours per charge and can replace 5,000 AA batteries - yes, I said 5,000. I have used it for two shows and it definitely got me through a Panic and Galactic show - no problem. When the battery first came out, it sold for $40. Now it is on sale for $20. It is roughly the size of a CD jewel case. It will not power a D8 or SBM 1. I hope this clears up any confusion that I caused. Adios, JLD

Now compare it to a high-end display (maybe.22 > mm); can you tell the difference? This is very loosely analagous to comparing > a digital audio system bandwidth-limited to 22khz (roughly the lowest point > where we're sure not to lose audible sine waves) with one providing a > headroom factor of 2 or more. This is an inappropriate analogy, because people can reliably tell the difference between such video monitors. There will always be people in marketing departments ready to sell better and better systems with more and more "bit depth" and sampling frequency. Better to concentrate on things that really are in need of improvement: microphones, loudspeakers, and especially listening rooms! Andrew.
From: "Jay J. Hector" <70243.3034@compuserve.com> Subject: Sony MD Report and MD Report Jr. Date: Fri, 16 Apr 1999 16:28:14 -0400 I just got a Location Sound flyer with some interesting products from Sony for field recording: Sony MD Report and MD Report Jr. Finally, an acceptable professional interface for the current generation of consumer portable DAT and MD recorders. Let's face it, those Sony Walkman DAT recorders sound OK, but the flimsy connectors and poor monitoring capability leave much to be desired. The MD Report and Junior have solved that. The MD Report turns the consumer portable DAT or MD recorder into a rugged, fully professional portable recording system. All you have to do is slip your recorder into the MD Report housing, connect the power and audio cables and go. The MD Report comwes standard with carrying case and strap, internal rechargeable battery and a charger. Here are the main features: Stereo mic/line inputs on XLR connectors High quality mic preamps Summed Mono Output on XLR connector (MD Report only) stereo output on 3.5mm minijack headphone output on 1/4" jack mic/line input selector 48v Phantom Power low battery indicator (MD Report only) stereo/mono switching source/record/line monitoring via headphone amp level control built-in monitor loudspeaker (MD Report only) 6-8 hours battery life from internal rechargeable battery or 4 D-cells (MD Report only--dual 9v for MD Jr.) If you need greater portability, then the MD Jr. may be for you. It offers most of the same features as the MD Report in a configuaration the same size as a TCD-D8 or MZ-R3, and will sit just below the recorder in a twin compartment carrying case. If you don't want to lose portability but want to upgrade your consumer recorder, these two units will do the job quite well. MD Report Retail $679.99 MD Report Junior Retail $349.99 It appears the MD Report will make a D8 about the size of an HHb Portadat or Tascam DA-P1. Jay
