Portable Phantom:
buy an AC inverter, like the SIMA (see at http://www.cameraworld.com ) hook
it up to a 12V battery (any size) then you can plug in a phantom power
supply. That inverter has regular power jacks, you can use it for all
appliances up to 150 Watt.

Subject: portable phantom power?
asked:
<<I was thinking about a solution that gives portable phantom power (48V?
for 2 microphones) with a very small size (no need for large XLR-3 input,
unbalanced output is OK, etc, etc).
Batterylife is not much of an issue (5-10 hours would be OK).
This box could be combined with small capsules like the DPA
(http://www.danishproaudio.com) 4022 or 4061.>>
I have in my possession now a prototype from DPA of what you ask. About the
size of a thick deck of cards, it has two Microdot inputs, XLR and mini TRS
outputs. I also have the prototype of a special binaural mic they have been
working on; quite spectacular.
More later.

wow. consider yourself lucky. I've only used one once, so I don't know if
mine was a _massive_ anamoly, but I only got about 2:45 straight running 48V
phantom with energizers in there.
bummer the show was 3:15...

I've never heard a mini-disc, so I can't comment on that, but there is a
significant loss of quality in even the 256kbps MP3 encoding format,
while most encodings are actually done at 128kbps or lower rates. I
haven't done a really good comparison, like burning a CD from an MP3 and
comparing the two, but even on a cheesy computer speaker system (better
than most, but nothing compared to a real stereo), the difference is
quite audible. It hasn't seemed worth making a coaster to test it further.
My opinion on MP3 is that it is suitable for portability, and for
providing samples for download, but it's never going to compete with CDs
for me (and DVD-audio should widen that gap further).
That said, the record industry =will= find a way to cash in on MP3s, so I
wouldn't worry about them going out of business just yet. ;-)

I'm glad you asked. Could be a Pro to consumer level or balanced to
unbalanced problem and it gives me a chance to rave about a pair of Rolls
Matchbox DB25 direct boxes that Klay set me up with (send him an e-mail if
you are interested). I do not what causes the problem but the they fixed it
for me. It is also nice to be able to run balanced cables a long way from the
soundboard to the boxes then to a D7 (when it works better for the venue).

OK, we are going to give you the power! You have worked with other
companies or heard the sad tales of woe from frustrated networkers.
What if you could put together the ideal network marketing company?
What characteristics would you build into your company? How would you
treat your distributors? Let's see...
1) First you'd need products that people want, need, can afford, give
results, and are in demand. This is a must. (What if you had products
with 9 years of extensive double blind studies, worked in seconds or
minutes, and affordable! What if you could add products announced on
CNN and weight loss products that really work! Naw!! Really?? This is
only a dream, right?!)
2) Then, you would want a company who would be willing to expose
these
products thru the media, at their cost: TV and radio commercials,
newspapers, talk shows, etc., to help you get the word out. Offer
people the chance to purchase products thru an 800 number while
viewing or listening to the advertisement. (I haven't seen anything
like this before! Could you just imagine!)
3) Then you would want your ideal company to let you share in the
sales
generated from this media exposure. Imagine what kind of volume this
national exposure would generate. (What company would do this? We had
nothing to do with these sales! This would be radical!)
4) Wouldn't it be great if we were given the names and addresses of
the
people who ordered product this way, so that we could follow-up with
the customer to either sell more product as needed or introduce him
or her to our ideal business opportunity. That would take care of our
distributors having to constantly be finding their own qualified
leads. (Companies now let us find our own leads, they follow-up with
these people and THEY pocket the proceeds!)
5) You would want your company's compensation plan structured in such
a way that we wouldn't need hundreds or even thousands in our
downline before we start earning a decent check. Most people cannot
do this. (True, but who's going to tell you this when you start?)
6) Wouldn't it be great if we could share in the successes of other
distributors, and not just those that are in our downline. We would
want
everybody to be successful, not just some. (Nope - all we can do is
admire
the others' success!)
Yes, wouldn't it be great if a company like this existed? One that
confronted all the major drawbacks in this industry and actually
solved them....a company that was built by distributors, for
distributors..... a company that would want it's distributors to be
successful....wouldn't it be great?
Introducing the nation's first and only Wave5 company, a company that
has
done all that and more! For more information about this
unprecedented business opportunity -- please email:
mailto:starwave@mymail.com?subject=more_info
or mailto:starwave5@bigfoot.com?subject=more_info
now for complete details. You now have the power to achieve your
goals!

Hi - I have 4 tickets in the 18th row center orchestra for "An Evening

Wallingford, CT. I'm only asking what I paid for them: $61.50 each
which includes all handling and phone-in-order fees. In addition to the
tickets I will provide my payment receipt as verification of what I paid
for the tickets. First person to arrange and make CASH PAYMENT IN
PERSON takes em. That's the only fair way I can figure to work this.
I'd like to keep one of the 4 tickets for myself but if you absolutely
need the 4th I'll labor over it and get back to you ASAP. Thanks, Ed.

Date: Sat, 3 Apr 1999 10:22:59 -0500
I have a pair of Neumann KM184 mics. I want to plug these intot he
Neumann BS 48i-1 power supply using the Neumann AC-21 cable.
This is a pair of 3 pin XLR cables, merged into a 5 pin XLR, which is what
the PS takes.
The output is an AC-23, which is a 5 pin XLR to 3.5 mm "unbalanced
stereo" plug.
I want to connect this to the jack on my SBM-1 labeled mic/plug in
power. Plugging a power suppy into t jack labeld plug in power just somehow
seems wrong.
Has anyone done this?
How about plugging the output of the power supply directly to the
TCD-D3? Its just labeled mic/line in.
Thanks,
Jim

Subject: help with my machine
Date: Tue, 27 Apr 1999 21:53:37 +0100
Hi everyone,
I'm fairly new to the list and would appreciate some help/advice re: my
machine which no longer works, particularly as I have little technical
knowledge.
I have an AIWA XD-S260 recorder, which developed a fault. Either during
recording or playback, the tape would stop, the caution warning light up and
I couldn't unload the tape or do anything else with the machine. This would
happen at random. The only way of achieving anything was by turning off at
the main supply and turning back on again, Everythhing would then be fine
untilthe next time
I have had the machine sent away for repair - initially I was told it needed
a new motor at what seemed a fair price. Now I have been told that it is
unrepairable -that there is an intermittent mechanical fault and that they
are unable to complete a repair.
Does this machine have a history of problems?
Does anyone know of a reliable repair company in the UK who might help (at
fair prices?)
Has anyone had similar problems and had machines repaired?
Or do I have to consign it to the scrap heap?
If so, can anyone recommend a good machine? I'm on a fairly tight budget .
I have looked through the ads in the UK magazine 'Sound on Sound' and seen
decks within my price range but I don't know what their track record is.
Any help will be much appreciated.
Many thanks & best wishes

Hey all,
Sorry for the long silence. The technical DAT-Head Alex Chin has been a
lurker for a while.
Anyhow, just wondering if there were any DAT Heads in Melbourne. I'm
planning a trip there next month... perhaps I could bunk in.
If so, please drop me a line.
And, yes, I'm still here. Just haven't had any new toys to open up lately.

Sorry for the lack of DAT content everyone, but this has some important
information that I figured a bunch of people on the digest list might be
interested in. Please save the following, read, sign, and pass along.

Quick Sign Petition to Preserve Red Rocks Park &
Amphitheatre
If you'd like to learn more about this issue, please visit:
http://www.red-rocks.org
Red Rocks amphitheatre is an internationally renowned venue
in the foothills west of Denver, Colorado. Performers and
spectators alike have come from all over the globe to
participate in events at this amphitheatre. Its
unsurpassed beauty, and natural, near-perfect acoustics have
drawn millions to this site. It's a magnificent natural
treasure that should be preserved and protected.
On Feb 18, 1999, the City of Denver announced plans to
renovate this historic landmark. The City's first proposal
called for a number of "improvements" which they claimed
would make the amphitheatre more "user-friendly." A few of
their proposed changes included:
-removing existing landscape to add 400 new box seats
-building a new restaurant and trading post beneath and
behind one of the 400 foot Red Rock monoliths that this park is
known for, although the park already has a well-established
restaurant, trading post, and visitor's center.
-allowing corporate sponsors to display advertisements on the
magnificent red stone monoliths.
-adding more concessions stands at strategic locations.
These are just a few of the City's proposed changes which
would adversely affect not only the character of this historical
landmark, but dramatically impact the park in which it is located.
Red Rocks Park is 639 acres of designated open space, and
one of the last bits of undeveloped real estate on the
western edge of Denver. Any attempt to commercialize this
property goes against the very purpose and intent of
dedicating open space.
We treasure our historical landmarks, and we value our open lands.
On March 2, 1999, Denver's Landmark Preservation Commission
unanimously voted down the City's current proposal, but don't think
this is over yet.
One way that our representatives can be aware of our concern
for and our commitment to the preservation of this
historical landmark, and the open lands that surround this
amphitheatre, is by making our voices heard.
Please add your name to this list and forward it to your

This is my list of complete shows available for trade. I send CDs, you
send CDs or DATs (in cases for protection). Things that I refuse to deal
with include incomplete shows and recordings with cuts or skips (during or

recorded most of them; therefore you won't find them elsewhere. If you

I use the old DOS version of this program, but it's the same principal.
There are two different ways to set pregaps: you can take time out of the
file itself, or you can add 2 seconds to the file. If you are doing this
with one .wav file, then there is no way to "cut" the file so that you
lengthen the time of the disc by 2 seconds. But if you are using two
distinct .wav files, you can use the PREGAP command to add two seconds to
the beginning of a track without taking time out of it. I think this would
accomplish what you are trying to do. In my DOS version, there is a file
called DAO.TXT that explains all of the commands and gives examples, I'm
sure there is something similar in the windows format that you have. Check
it out and see what it says.

I agree with Seth. Although in real life, you get a lot of electronic
noise, which sorts of counts as dither. That'll actually give you a higher
'perceived' resolution.

That is only during the peaks. Assuming the normal level is -12 dB below,
you only have 12 bits of effective resolution. I tend to go over, peaking
at 0, or close to it. So what if I clip a minor few peaks, less audible I
reckon than less resolution.

This depends on the A/D. Some have noise shaping already in the 14/12 bit
signal, so the actual useful signal can be even one bit less. Normalising
will break the noise shaping, leaving you even worse off.

Greetings Friends,
Alaska is starting to melt from the 6+ feet of solid ice/snowpack on my
property this year. This week promises mid 50's and sunny with 30+ mph
winds from the south. Here in Alaska we call it the Chinook winds since
these winds are known to bring fresh King "Chinook" Salmon to our rivers to
start their spawning runs. and yes, several in the upper 40's low 50's were
caught off Deep Creek this past few days.
I hope to be out this Friday. it is said that King Salmon tremble at the
mention of my name...but I think they start trembling cause I often play
Neils acoustic music in my boat while fishing. I guess only time will
tell...
My main reason for writing to you all is that I would like to get a
DAT (or minidisc) recording of Neil Youngs show at Akron, Ohio last night
4-27-99. I have many master recordings including 12 of Neils tour this year
on the west-southwest coast. Anyone with a recording of Neil in Akron, let
me know and I will email to you my updated list.

Subject: GYBE! taping advice
Date: Wed, 28 Apr 1999 13:34:43 +0100
Happy to say I finally caught Montreal post-rock outfit Godspeed You
Black Emperor! last night (@ Embassy Rooms, London). Sadly I wasn't able
to tape the show. Only other taper I found managed to hit erase on his
MD deck 5 minutes after the show finished (I'm not making this up!).
Anyhow - apart from an obvious grovel for any folks who've been a bit
luckier to come forward, I figured I'd share some info that might help
folks planning on taping upcoming shows...
First off, GYBE! have a ton of kit on stage. There's nine of them (3
guitars, 2 bass, 2 drummers, cello, violin). Not everything is mic'ed
for the PA so desk feeds are *out*. Logical extension of this is that
get the whole sound down, you'll need to position somewhere centre -
stack hugging is a big no no. The stage I saw them on had amps layed out
the full width of the stage - binaurals might sound good here?
I'd been warned that they were fairly loud. They were, but not to Mogwai
levels. Shouldn't be a problem. They did get louder as they went on...
Final thing to note is that the band started playing while the 'between
bands' music was on (in fact you could here the tape playing for a good
90 seconds into the set!). Start recording as soon as anyone picks up a
guitar!
If you've not heard GYBE! check them out - some sound clips are at
http://www.gybe.cx/
Thanks for the bw

hey I was wondering sense the location is so large, something like 14sq
blocks if it would be possible to slide some equipment under the fences. I
know last year there were so many people that once you get in you can do
whatever you want. However the amount of people could be a problem, but if
I remember correctly they had the sound board on a very large scaffolding
setup, so you could set up in FOB. I am working right now with the guy that
does the lights for panic, brian to get a possible patch sense in essence
they are not allowing taping. He said he is going to talk to Mary Armstrong
from brown cat, and Houser to get approval, but this is still tentative. If
I hook it up i'll let ya know.
jeramy
Please contact me if you'd be interested in helping tape some bands.
It costs $30 for a 3-day ticket, but it is well worth it! And
remember, you are more than likely going to have to stealth. So if
you have some Core Sound, Sonic Studios, or wanna sneak in say,
AKGs/Neumanns->pre-amp->DA-P1 -- go for it!!! Just as long as you
can get it through the front gate!
And KindTaper@aol.com, if you're out there, get a hold of me too! I
think I remember you have stealthing capabilities, plus you're a
local taper dude like me! :)

Subject: mic thoughts

Hey folks. Just jumping back here after a 1y leave.
I'm looking to upgrade my mics and am looking for opinions and names of other
mics I should check. I am also willing to accept quotes/bids from any lurking venders.
Details.
I'm willing to spend about $2k for a pair.
They will mostly be used in ORTF and NOS configurations for recording
field sounds, including campfire music, nature sounds and occasional small/medium venue concerts.
I currently mostly record MS with a Sure VP-88 but want a better mic, as well as need a solution to
when MS is not appropriate (still plan on mostly MS recording). I'm mostly recording Directly to a DAP-1.
What I want is FLAT and ACCURATE. Bass Roll-off and PAD is nice to have.
Removable capsules are nice incase I want to get a fig-8 or hyp-card down the road.
Low self noise is also VERY important. Stealth is not an issue as I have to much
respect for the musicians to EVER record without permission.
Mostly I seem to like Senheiser MKH40.
The only drawback is non changeable capsules, $$$, and the are a bit big (heavy).
The Neuman KM140 looks nice but is not as flat, nor has the bass roll-off (which I use allot).
Are there any other mics I should consider?
How about zeppelins and shock mounts
I would want one that could be used for XY, NOS, ORTF & MS
that would have some sort of elastic suspension or similar.
Unfortunately out here there are no places where I could go to listen to
mics of this caliber so I am hoping for folks thoughts on this.
Thanx for you help

I assume that the Lucid is a digital in to PC interface?
(what do I know - I'm using custom AKM based A/Ds and D/As and a Gina card)
If this is so you are (and should be) digital all the way from the
Tascam to the PC. Since there is no analog going on here
what the computer gets is an EXACT copy of what is on the DAT,
which is what you want. Anything from there changes things.
This is why you want to do any level changes, compression, nominalization
etc after the transfer from the computer in the PC domain (unless you have
digital mastering equipment - but I assume you are not at that level)
The only thing to watch out for now is quantization artifacts.
Since the PC will use floating point math there will always be some
error besides jut level control. Some PC programs do all math at 16 bits
which can be bad news, some are 24 bit (like sound forge) and some are
32 bits (like Cool Edit) the more bits the less error and the less quantization noise
you will here.

This is the remote that comes with the D-100 but not
the M1 (and works with either the D100 or M1).
Retails for $99 and you can see a picture and
description at:
http://www.american-digital.com/rmed100.html
You can monitor levels on the remote while your deck
is safely tucked away (though the remote is not
back-lit). Controls on the remote include:
ff/rew/play/stop/hold/counter mode/volume/clock/AVLS.
You can also plug headphones into the remote but they
are not included.
It works fine, but aside from making sure it works, I
have never used it.
$50, I'll pay priority mail shipping in the US.
Thanks

Is there any way to get DAT-Heads in any format other than digest?
it would be much easier if I could get it in "Normal list-serve" format
with a unique e-mail for each post.
Thanx

Subject: Help
Date: Sun, 16 May 1999 21:51:10 EDT
Hello All,
I was hoping someone out there could give me some advice. I'm looking into
purchasing a CD Burner & Sound Card. I'm looking into the Yamaha CRW-4416EZ
& the Yamaha CRW-4416S. What I can't figure out is what is difference
between Interface E-IDE & Interface SCSI-2. That is the only difference
between the 2 models as far as I can tell. I'm also looking into purchasing
the Ziafro ZA-2 Sound Card. Was wondering if anyone is currently using that
setup & what they thought of it. Also curious if anyone could recommend a
place that is currently selling these items at a low low price. The lowest
price I've gotten on the burner was $349. Last but not least, wondered if
anyone could recommend a brand of CD's to buy. Currently I'm buying Memorex
74 min. Cd's. Comp USA by me is selling 15 packs w/ jewel cases for $24.99.
I have a couple of friends who use Memorex, so this is the only brand I am
familiar w/. I guess that's all the questions I have for now. Thank You for
the Help!!!!

Subject: john peel, tuesday
Date: Sun, 16 May 1999 22:35:12 EDT
Hi, I need a favor from someone - Marine Research (featuring some former
members from Heavenly/Talulah Gosh) will do a Peel Session on Tuesday's Peel
Show, and I'd appreciate if someone can record all of Peel's Program (is it 2
hours?) on SP, 120minute (60meter) DAT/DDS for me, so I can hear the session
as well as the rest of Peel's program.
I do have analog tapes (several low gen) of Talulah Gosh/Heavenly shows from
1986 to 1996, and many of my 1986-1987 shows are very decent, and most TG
fans know how hard it is to find good low-gen copies of those shows since
most were taped on cheap tape recorders by fans of the band who weren't as
concerned with sound quality.
if anyone can help, please let me know. i also tape shows using D100, and
I'm expecting a new pro deck next week (so that i can FINALLY copy those
Rufus shows to those who are waiting) so can make SCMS-free clones etc. I
just taped Modern English on Saturday, plus still try to tape/trade most
UK-indie bands...
any help is appreciated, thanks!

About a year. There aren't any M1s much older than that, are there?

No idea.

2:25. But it *is* a tiny portable, so that's really not so bad.

Your logic seems to be that it stopped working with 90m tapes, so the
cause of the problem must have been the 90m tapes. Erm.

Subject: "CDR Pen" and other mysterious CDR accessories
Date: Mon, 17 May 1999 08:55:53 -0400 (EDT)
I generally believe that a company trying to sell a $5 pen is probably
not the best source of info, esp not when that $5 pen competes with good
ol' Sharpie.
Of course, I admit, I quit writing on the discs with
sharpies after I heard about this, opting only to write on the inner
ring. I also use a Neato CD labeler (another supposed "deadly glue
solvent") so we'll see what happens with that.
What I really wonder is, can anyone here definitively say THEY PERSONALLY
have had a disc mysteriously stop playing due to solvent-based ink?
Clearly,m if you put a sticky note on a fragile surface, it will yank
some of it off. That's not rocket science. I'm only interested in pen
ink. I have some discs with sharpie on them, and I'm wondering now if I
ought to seriously consider backing them up. I'm hopeful that no sane
person who handles discs properly can say they blame the ink. Thus far
in my foray into the CDR world, it appears what really destroys them is
good old fashioned negligence and misuse.
an unusual question/opinion mix? I thought so.

In DAT-Heads Digest #959, Rick Rombak <rick@knight-barry.com>
asked:
>does anyone have any information on either of these units? what to >pay?,
>how does it record, sound?, what is comparable?, any
>information is appreciated.
I bought an HHb CDR-850 a month ago and am currently one happy puppy.
Here's a quick list of the machine's features:
- Analog XLR and RCA inputs and outputs.
- Analog XLR inputs and outputs can be switched +4dBu / -10dbu
from the front panel.
- S/PDIF coax and optical inputs and outputs.
- AES/EBU XLR input.
- Wired remote control input.
- Wireless IR remote provided, can be disabled on front panel.
- Can use CDR and CD-RW blanks, computer or consumer.
- Ignores SCMS on input. You can set the SCMS code on the CD
you are recording.
- Built-in sample rate convertor. Will automatically convert
32 or 48 kHz to 44.1 kHz. If set to "Sample Rate Converter
Off", will not resample 44.1 kHz input. If set to "Sample
Rate Convertor On", will resample 44.1 khz input (useful for
44.1 kHz Varispeed input).
- Digital recording modes: 1-track synchro (record 1 track, stop
when the next Start-ID is encountered), all-track synchro
(record multiple tracks and convert Start-IDs to track marks),
manual record (mark tracks yourself).
- Built in digital fader 6, 9, 12, 15, 18 seconds.
- Auto or manual finalize
- Multiple erase options on CD-RW: unfinalize, erase last song,
erase all songs, wipe entire disc.
- Digital output can be switched off.
- Auto-stop on digital recording after 0 or 10 seconds of digital
silence, or ignore digital silence.
- OPCs every disc for recording.
- Can automatically insert track marks, from analog input, when
signal goes below a certain level (You set this level).
- Auto-pause on playback (paly one track, then stop)
- All functions can be controlled from the front panel.
All in all, IMHO, a very nice deck. I imagine the Fostex CR300 is
similar, except for maybe the A/D convertor quality. However, I
just saw the HHb CDR-850 Plus on their website. It has the following
additional features:
- Word clock in (for synchronized playback in a digital studio).
- AES/EBU XLR output (also transmits Start-IDs through that XLR).
Anyway, I paid $999 for mine. Klay Anderson and MasterpieceAV
both carry the CDR-850 for that price. Both are exceedingly
reputable and customer-friendly in my dealings with them.

Hello again.
Are there any Rainbow DAT-Heads out there amongst us.
Things are gearing up for the National Gathering in PA this year
and I would love to make contact with other DAT-Heads who will
be there besides myself.
It would be nice for us to coordinate on charging, mics, batteries etc.
I will have a 200ah battery and 150W of solar panel for other DAT-Heads to use.
Looks like we may have some funding to do a full-production FREE CD for next
year.. kinda in the vain of the Rainbow Spirit video. It would be nice
to have as many contributors as possible.
Also the CD I did of Campfire music I did from last years National in AZ
is basically done. I intend to pass out as many free CDRs of this as I can
burn with my trusty CDR. If anyone is interested in helping me copy more
CDRs to pass out (who will be in PA of course) please e-mail me.

When the D7, or D8 get digital input, they don't synch their D/A
converters to the input's clock, resulting in clicks on the analog
output. This does not affect the tape in any way; when you later play
that tape (on that or another deck), the clicks won't be there.

I am trying to learn more on the conversion process. What makes some
coverters better than others? For example, what makes the DA-P1's or
HHb's A/D better than the D7/8? Hmm, perhaps someone thinks it is the
other way around??? What is it about the external converters, e.g.
ADC-20 or A/D-1000. that make them superior to internal?
What deck(s) on the market have the best converters?
Thank you,
Eric

w/ Mark Turner on tenor, Aaron Fletcher on alto, Eric Harland on drums,
Edward Simon on piano, and David Pulpus on bass). CoreSound heb->m1.
outdoors appr. 35 ft from stage. 90 min set. Pretty good stealth recording,
tenor & piano are a bit weak, and A. bass lack definition (gets better as
soundman gets it together), but good clarity on trumpet, alto & cymbals.
Also recorded Roomful of Blues, Ray Vega Latin Jazz 4tet, and Kevin
Mahogany, but Terrance Blanchard was the smoker. I haven't heard a jazz set
this good in a long time. Aaron Fletcher (alto) is only 19 years old and
sounds like a cross between an Paul Desmond and Cannonball Adderly. A really
lyrical improviser. Each member is a monster. Can't say enough good things
about 'em. See them if they come your way.
Looking for good jazz (or interesting other) for trade. I'll be out of town
until Monday PM (going to Asheville, NC to see Hornsby).

hey y'all
Seth asked me what was up with the Teddy GoodBear Trees:
i responded like this:
open letter to Seth B.
to Seth:
PLEASE READ:
i reiterate what i sent to you previously...others seem to be fine with the
arrangement...
to qoute my message directly:...as was sent to you last week...
hey guys,
i was orig to be a DAT Trunk on this tree, but had to place myself in CDR
land instead...
therefore, i have the round 1 on DAT, but my D>CDR capabilities are giving
me fits right now...(long story)...
Teddy is going out of town in a few days, so there was no time to get
another batch of seeds spun in time...
sooo...the big question...
would y'all be willing to recieve round 1 on DAT instead?...of course,
converting to CDR for your children...
if for some reason this won't work for any of you, that's fine, i will have
to get these converted, and then i will simply pick something else from you
and trade the CDRs as normal...
if this will work for you all...i will get these sent off to each of you by
this weekend (give you some extra time to do your conversions)...Teddy has
listed all the CDR timings on the web pages, and this should be an easy
conversion...(except for me!)...
so sorry for the inconvenience...things will be cleared up by round 2, i
promise...;-)/
thanks in advance...
OF COURSE I HEARD NOTHING FROM SETH ON THIS ONE...
===========================================================
of equal importance, Seth, is why are you jacking around your kids on OUR
01's Tour Tree '98?...
Al Zeffer and i have MANY complaints about you having 7 shows in your
possesion, and not releasing them to the masses...
what gives, bro?...
and another pertinent deal...
why did you OFFER assistance with the pending 12/31 tree when you were not
ready or willing to come forth with any goods?...a simple note saying "not
interested" would have been fine...instead, we heard NOTHING!...
enuf of this HOLIER THAN THOU CRAP!...
if you don't have something constructive to offer...please keep the
condesending comments to yourself, eh, bro?...
just a little FYI:
you're "quoting" of every damn comment on DAT-Heads is quite
redundent...give someone else a chance, eh? ...or do you figure no-one else
would be able to answer with your clarity, and forethought?...
ever get out of your apartment and tape/see a damn show?... think about
it...it's great fun...just ask anyone on the list...oh, yeah, you don't need
to ask any questrions......that's right, you're the answer man...i forgot...

Subject: FS: Lunatec V2 w/ Eco-Charge battery and charger
Date: Fri, 21 May 1999 01:39:25 -0400
Hey all->
I am parting with my Lunatec V2 preamp and an Eco-Charge battery system to
power it. Reason for selling: upgrading to Apogee AD1000:)
Lunatec V2 new: $1495
Eco-Charge Sigma Plus system: ~$179. Includes BP-50 battery with y-cable
to power the Pre-Amp and a Sony D8/7 and Smart Charger. Record time using
both outs=8hrs. You can use the battery by itself on the Lunatec not
powering a Sony portable for ~12hrs.
The Lunatec has been great and sounds great. It hurts me to part with it,
but IMHO the Neumann KM140>Lunatec V2> Apogee AD1000 rig sounds better than
that without the V2, but just not $1500 better. I have taped probably
about a dozen shows with it and it is in mint condition with original
paperwork, Serial#V045. Purchased new in September '98 from Sonic Sense
and extremely babied.
Asking $1300obo for package. I think it's a fair price for the package, so
don't make a ridiculous offer or it will be deleted wihtout hesitation. If
you have questions about my credibility or whatever, I think there may be a
few people here willing to back me up. Please reply via private e-mail to
this address and thank you for your support.
May the Force be with you,
Kevin

I can if I have to, but it would be a major hassle. (I expect the
quality would be OK, but I can't guarantee it.)

Just which tree is that?

Which shows? The only Other Ones tree I know of (that I'm on), I've
sent 11 shows to each of my children as of last month.
> why did you OFFER assistance with the pending 12/31 tree when you were not

I'm not _ready_ to, because I haven't made duplicate copies yet. I'll
be able to; tell me specifically which of the tapes you want, and I
should be able to get them out next week. (In fact, you could even
get them in trade for this tree; see how easy it is sometimes?)
> a simple note saying "not

So, ping me again. I don't have time to keep up with everything, and
stuff gets lost in my inbox.

Field Question. Your stealth out in the sacred sweet spot. The Pyramid, You
get levels after hitting pause, then record. Hit pause again and check
levels, then put on hold. At the end of the show I rewound to the beginning.
When I got home hit eject and come to find out the tape is pulled out of the
case. I replaced the tape back in the cartridge and the played the tape with
no recording in sight at all. So I guess the Question is: Is this tape shot
now, can the music ever be recovered. What can I do to prevent this mistake
again?Thanks Bill

For CD booklets I have to admit that I use Micro$oft Publisher. I
created a 12 page booklet with ease. Similarly for CD labels I use
Publisher. For back sheets I use EasyCD which has basic functionality.

Since I first heard about this tree from this forum, I thought I'd share
with everyone how the admin treats people. This is NOT a bad trader alert or
a warning not to sign up for any of the "GoodBear aud" trees. It's just what
happened to me. I made a simple, fairly polite request to be moved in the

Does anyone out there know which of the commercially available cdr machines (standalone audio, i don't have a computer at home, nor do i have enough money for one right now) allows the recording of live music without pauses between tracks? I went to a store and they told me all of their machines (philips, pioneer) would put a gap between tracks. Obviously, i would want to be able to make a mike's->groove into three tracks, but have them flow seamlessly, much like the way it works on a dick's picks segue..... any info would be much appreciated...

Subject: No Soundboard, No Dancing Policy
Date: Fri, 21 May 1999 12:49:29 -0400
Hey John,
I got to see Hornsby last night, They gave me the biggest run around, I
first got there about 45 mins early. The guy at the Board said no patches,
I explained the letter. And he said Alan was back stage and would be back at
show time. When I got back before ShowTime no one would admit to being
Allan, so I said to myself, to forget it. I had plenty of friends that had
mics set up. I went and took my seat (Amex Gold 4 row center) I used my
coresounds, and proceeded to enjoy what I perceived to be pretty good show,
train song started and I started to get that itch to stand up and dance to
that boogie feeling that Bruce can so much do with those ivories of his. We
looked around to see if we were disturbing anybody, and all we got back were
smiles, so we continued to enjoy the show, right up until Bruce ruined the
night, for my wife at least. I don't mind being embarrassed or degraded, but
Bruce started sing about moving to the side of the amphitheater if we wanted
to dance, which was fine w/ me, but I paid for good seats and didn't want to
go over to the GA portion of the show, so I sat down! which was a good waste
of dancing music.
Not to leave it at that, Bruce proceeds to chastise us, for being
inconsiderate, and not thinking of our neighbor, "being in our own trip" as
he put it. Saying we should be kind to our neighbors, Me being the guy that
I am might think of MYSELF once in a while, but far from inconsiderate to my
neighbor. And my wife, never thinks of herself first. She really wanted to
go the side to dance by herself.
I know that I was not disturbing anybody around me, due to the fact that,
that most of the people that were behind us decided to move to the side of
the place to dance.
To really top it off Bruce, people behind us later in the show yells out to
Bruce, "Can we dance Yet!" Were as Bruce then says sure if you want to
dance, Dance. Seeing people get up and dance gets Bruce to offer everyone
up on stage to dance on stage.
We sat the rest of the night!
By the way my tape on the coresounds, came out nice up until Bruce chastises
us, which then has conversation on it with my wife stating that she feels
insulted, and embarrassed .
But I do have a clean tape of this show, E-mail for details.
Peace, and if you know how to warn others of this no dancing in your seat
area, let others know of this (I believe New)Policy.
Thanks, Boca Bob Silver
PS Don't get me wrong, very Tight, and enjoyable show. But I was just
surprised!

A buddy of mine has taper tickets that he won't be
using for these shows - he's looking for a straight
trade, one taper ticket for that show, for one regular
seat (pavillion preferred) for that same night. He'd
also like to be able to do a DAT b&p for a copy of the
show. Additionally, he wants to split the tickets on
nights that he has two taper tickets available
(instead of both taper tix going to the same
individual), so that as many people with equipment as
possible are able to get in.
Don't reply to me - his email addy is carp1@siu.edu
and he'll be able to check his email this coming
Sunday.
atlanta July3-4 - 2 taper tix for each night
virginia beach - two tickets for that night
mansfield - one ticket each night
holmden - one for each night

I am seeking opinions on the Pioneer PDR-555 CDR deck. If you have one
I am very interested in hearing your thoughts. What discs work
well? Please email me directly as I don't always get a chance to read
this list, thanks. My objective is simple, start spinning DATs to CDR
and this unit appears supports sample rate conversion + fade in/out.

I build rechargeable battery packs for D7/D8's and a couple of pre-amps
for much cheaper than other's. Do you have Word

D8 pack for $100 delivered. Let me know and I will send you some info
on it!

Hey Now-
Sorry for the lack of DAT content, everyone, but I figured someone on
the list might be interested in this one... I just got two Alpine Valley
Lawn tickets through Phish Mail Order, but I'm unable to use them :-(
:-( :-(
Also, I didn't receive any Great Woods (Tweeter Center) tickets from
either night...So, if anyone wants my Alpine Valley tickets + cash,
trade, etc. for some Great Woods tickets, or if anyone wants to buy the
Alpine Valley tickets for cash/trade/etc, then drop me a line...
Peace and happy taping,

Hey Now!
(sorry for the lack of DAT content)
Just got my Phish MO back, but didn't get ANY Great Woods (though I did
get tix for Oswego & Alpine Valley). My brother & I are taking a train
trip back East for the two runs (Oswego & Great Woods) and would really
REALLY appreciate it if anyone could help us find 2 tickets for both
nights of Great Woods(either night would be great!). We've got plenty to
trade, including our Alpine Valley tix that we can't use, tapes, DAT's,
more tapes, live CDR's, stickers, cash, a Kenwood CD Player, and even
another tape or two. Anyhow, thanks in advance to any kind souls who can
help us out!
Peace and happy taping,

Subject: Recommend source for 4-CD binder pages?
Date: Fri, 21 May 1999 14:26:15 -0700
Hello everyone. After a long hibernation, I'm ready to start putting my
DATs onto CDR and start trading again. I've decided to try using big 3-ring
binders to store my CDs. Jewel cases are annoying, expensive, and they
always break; plus, you need shelves to store them in quantity. For me, a
big-assed 5" 3-ring binder with a ton of those little 4-CD-per-page binder
sheets seems like the best solution. Mobile, lightweight, small,
effective... a show a page, plus a place to stick the setlist. Perhaps even
a 'check-out card' for loaning pages (shows) to people. Man, is that anal
or what?
Does anyone know where I can order these sheets? Some of them are kind of
cheap (the plastic tends to rip at the sides, etc) -- any word on quality of
the sheets? The ones in my caselogic CD thing are nice, but I suspect
caselogic charges an arm and a leg for them. I'm thinking maybe office depo
or something like that, I haven't spent too much time poking around town to
find them yet.
Thanks!

This is the tree where Mark Houston <MToaste@aol.com> is your parent, whom
has not had a response from his emails to you since Feb. 27, 1998 and to
whom you owe 7 tapes as your end of a trade for some of the treed shows.

Seth, How many Other Ones trees are you on? If you have only sent 11 tapes
to your kids, your 10 or so behind as the tree was completed a couple of
months ago.
snipped crap...
> see how easy it is..
even easier when you return an email on occasion....
Do all of us a favor Seth, don't sign up for any trees, you don't seem to be
able to hold up your end.

Subject: FS: AKG C3000's
Date: Fri, 21 May 1999 16:06:07 -0700
Greetings everybody-
As the subject says, it looks as though I'll be
parting with my pair of AKG C3000's. Reason? Well, I just
got my bonus check from work, and I'll be upgrading to a pair
of Neumann KM184's:) I purchased the AKG's only a few months
ago as a "starter" setup to make sure I'd enjoy taping as much
as I thought I might, before investing more money in equipment.
Well, I learned quickly just how much fun it was going to be, and
I'm ready to commit more cash now. The AKG's have served me very
well, and I hope that they will find a good home and bring somebody
else the enjoyment they've brought me.
I would like to get $400 for the pair, but will consider slightly
lower offers if I can't find somebody to meet that price. I paid
$600 for them only a few months ago, but I got a few accessories
with the package that I'd like to keep. These mics are in excellent
condition, and include the swivel mounts and hard-shell padded
cases they came with. I'll also throw in a pair of 20ft cables and
clamp on mounting arms if desired. So...if you've been meaning to
jump into the pit with the rest of the loonies and start making tapes
for yourself instead of begging for a patch at every show, by all
means, get in touch with me and we'll work something out! If need
be, I'll gladly spin a show I've recorded with these mics if you
need convinced as to how good they sound.
For those that don't know, these are large diaphram mics with built-in
windscreens and shock-mounts. They have three switches (bass-rolloff,
pad, and card/hyper-card polar pattern) and require phantom power.
I'd also like to take a second to thank Phil Nazzaro, who sold me
these mics and is probably personally responsible for getting me
hooked:)
Thanks for the space!
chad
