From: "Tim Murray" <tmurray@total.net> Subject: Absolute Time Date: Tue, 13 Jul 1999 17:28:42 -0400 I received a batch of dats in the mail in a trade and a couple of them have problems with the absolute time. One of them doesn't have any absolute time recorded at all and with another, the display just flashes really crazy when I switch to absolute time. I am using a Fostex D5 and the A time on my other tapes seem fine. Anyone know how to fix the absolute time on these tapes or what else to do? The music is fine, just the a time is screwed up it seems. Thanks in advance. Tim tmurray@total.net
From: Seth Breidbart <sethb@panix.com> Subject: Re: Absolute Time Date: Tue, 13 Jul 1999 17:33:54 -0400 (EDT) > Anyone know how to fix the absolute time on these tapes or what else to do? > The music is fine, just the a time is screwed up it seems. Some decks (Panasonic sv-3700 and similar) can rewrite absolute time on a tape, but you lose the Start-Ids. Otherwise, it's easiest just to clone it (it might be easiest to do that anyway, and trade away the tape you got). Seth

From: Tom McCreadie <mccreadi@simplex.nl> Subject: Re: Resampling Date: Wed, 14 Jul 1999 02:37:18 +0200 Jamie Treworgy's polite dissent, in #55, to the claim that downsampling of .wav files takes disproportionately longer as the files become huge: <<Have you actually timed a longer file to compare to your short results? There's no reason to expect that what you are saying is true; quite the contrary one would expect the time to increase in a linear fashion......>> Yes, Jamie is correct and I'm sorry to have passed along anecdotal hearsay without scrutiny. Sloppy! Most of the files I process are in the 5-15 min range (classical movement sections etc). I had never timed the longer jobs but they did seem to take an eternity and I had swallowed horror stories from friends of "freeze-ups with memory/disk error messages". It has since turned out that those problems were solely of the kind: "out of hard disk space"(for the temp file). To convince myself, I have since compared the down-sampling speed of a 4 min long file to that of a 1 hr file and - ahem - the big file was actually proportionately faster! ____________________________________________________________ File size Time (x real-time) MB min-sec Pre-filter Downsample Scan Total ____________________________________________________________ 41 3-44 0.70 0.77 0.09 1.56 656 59-44 0.48 0.63 0.08 1.19 ____________________________________________________________ Conditions: K6-2 400 MHz processor; 48 MB 60 ns EDO ram; CEP in high-speed/ lower-quality setting "30"; undo mode disabled 1st IDE HD with partitions C,E, E and G for resp. Win98 OS, CEP prog, CEP 2ry temp file (369 MB free), .wav files. 2nd IDE HD for CEP 1ry temp file (691 MB free - i.e bigger than any .wav file) Conversion should probably be fast and trouble-free if the HD temp file space exceeds the original .wav file size. (Haven't yet tried re-processing the 1 hour file with a deliberate shortage of temp file space.). I still prefer to work with smaller wave files, though. But then again, I am a timorous soul who like's to get something "safely in the bag"...you ought to see how frequent my word-processor does automatic saves <g>.
