During the recording, although listening on headphones, this was not apparent. Having initially adjusted the level BEFORE the concert to give about 6 decibels headroom, this was unexpected and disastrous. I admittedly, did not use the MIC ATTenuation switch (20 dbs) as it didn't seemed necessary. Why would clipping occur BEFORE the sound level reaches 0 dbs? The microphone was about 40ft from the sound source (a pipe organ). Chris >> Beginner's error, you likely not do this again. No problem with the deck or mic, just your deck's setting should always include the (L) or 20 db atten setting (in MANUAL mode) for recording ANYTHING that's PA'd when using the mic input. There's a bit more about this you need to know and consider. My site's Tips page explains how to avoid distortion on all portable decks by selecting proper settings. GO CRAZY!!! :) For more info on bands/schedules/directions/other info, go to: http://www.magmusic.com/ If you especially live around the Atlanta area or will be attending this weekend's Harvest Festival in Fairburn GA, I can arrange to meet you there Saturday. From: "DeGrado, Robert K" <Robert.DeGrado@PSS.Boeing.com> Subject: Mother Hips & Vinyl tour dates Date: Mon, 4 Oct 1999 16:39:21 -0700 Just wanted to send notice that MOTHER HIPS and VINYL are now touring separately in and outside of their native California. Both bands are very taper friendly as I've had the privilege of taping both (on separate occasions) from the soundboard. But bring mics if you have them since I would guess some of the venues listed below might have substandard boards. I'll have MH's 10/6 and Vinyl's 11/6 gigs covered but will be interested in trading for anything else, particularly the gigs that MH are headlining. Thanks for the space -Rob. From: Hawker <Hawker@Connriver.net> Subject: DA-30MKII Woes Date: Mon, 04 Oct 1999 20:07:35 -0400 Howdy all, I have a few DA30MKII Questions. I hope someone can help with some of these. 1) Is there anyway to get around the 90m tape limitation of the DA-30 aside from sticking bubble gum in the hole of the DAT tape. My DA-30 will not play 90m tapes. 2) I can SPDIF dub from my DA-30 to my DA-P1 but not the other way around. If I try it looks like it is recording fine but I end up with a blank tape and no time code. Any ideas? It used to work. 3) I have a VERY early DA-30MKII (first one my dealer had - large dealer) but it has VERY low hours on it as I usually us my other decks. I figure I should update the firmwear. Does anyone have the HEX or JDEC code to burn my own PROM for this? I am assuming there is a 27Cxxx or some such EPROM/E^2 or similar inside i need to change. Thanx Hawker

From: "Joe Shambro" <jshambro@apci.net> Subject: ISO: Used Mics/Stand Date: Mon, 4 Oct 1999 21:14:04 -0500 Hi there, I'm looking to buy a possibly used pair of cheap mics with a bass roll-off - I picked up a D6 for a song and I'd like to add some decent mics, and a stand. I have a 9- foot stand, but it somehow got a kink in it, and it leans to one side a bit, and I would hate for it to fall over causing problems. Also, Is there any way to get a pair of mics/bass roll off for $150 or under? I spoke with someone at Radio Shack (bleh.) and they tried to sell me on a pair of $50 Shure Omni Cards, and he said they wouldn't need a bass roll off since they could go from 40-20,000hz freq. response (I don't think he knew what he was saying). He also said I"d have to buy one of their $50 mixers to use two mics with one stereo unit, and that I couldn't run a Y cable because it wouldn't sound right. How do you guys do it? What would you reccomend? Anyway, I'm sorry for sounding ignorant, I'm just confused. Thanks guys. Peace, -Joe
