I was crusing Target a few weeks ago and picked up a nifty portable power
supply. It's called a _Pocket Generator_ and is manufactured by Vector. I
found them in the automobile section near at the AC inverters and what
not.
The unit is 6.25" x 4.0" x 7.5" and contains a 12v 5 amp/hour lead acid
battery and has a AC/DC inverter hardwired to it. It provides both AC
(110v) and DC (12v). The AC is provided via a standard wall plug and the
DC is provided by a cigarette jack. It comes with a charger, some cables
and is packaged in a nice nylon water resistant case with belt and
shoulder straps. It seems like a nice way to use AC equipment in the
field. The AC output is a modified sine wave so i'm unsure of how clean
the power is, maybe an EE can take a look. The price -- $40. I've been
using it the past few weeks with various pieces of equipment and have been
quite pleased. My only complaint is the weight, 4.6 pounds.

The R500 is more solid than most Sony consumer decks, but I would still
recommend against using 90m tapes LP for "archiving." DAT really isn't the
greatest medium to be archiving in, anyway. You're better off just holding
on to the cassettes and making sure you have a working cassette deck in the
future. You're not really in much danger of hurting your machine, but 90m
at LP you are likely to have unplayable DATs in the future. At least that's
my experience. The only time I would ever do LP on 90m would be if I was
trying to catch a timer recording of something that was very long or at an
indeterminate time, using the 6 hours to make sure I catch it. I would then
immediately copy it off to another tape.

i compared bladeencoded 256kbps mp3 to original DAT/PCM 44k on my home

different - i did a blind test w/ two other guys and all drew same
conclusion (NB: all our ears are shot from too many years of going to
concerts but i truly think at 256k a lot of music won't sound that diff -
all i can say is try the test yourselves; just don't compare some crappy
<192kbps mp3 to pcm and then say mp3 is worthless)

It sure would be nice if Digigram would either provide a linux driver,
or make information avilable to the linux development community.
They seem to have a decent product. Does anyone know of any digital
laptop solutions for linux?
I have played with the cheesy built-in sound card in my Omnibook
7100 and got some decent results recording some practice jams, but
I'd certainly want a decent A/D solution before attempting anything
comparable to DAT recording.

> Los Lobos Sbd Patches Halted
It is with great sorrow that I pass along news I received from the band
this morning that Los Lobos has decided to stop allowing Sbd patches
effective immediately. Exact reasons for this decision were not
disclosed but it has been brewing for a while. They reiterated their
openess to audience taping and encourage tape trading for personal use.
They will notify each venue prior to doors opening that the band allows
audio tape decks into
their shows, but keep in mind that some venues do not allow taping
regardless of a band's wishes. All mic stands must be placed behind or
to the side of the soundboard.

Hi People,
Well not being "really" into the Dead, I've always wondered why I never
saw my first Dead show on any lists, 7/4/86 in Buffalo. I was not in
the know about taping back then so I never noticed that there were no
mic stands there. So does a nice copy of this show circulate? I'd like
the Dylan set too but I'm mainly searching for the Dead's portion of the
show. Even if no one will clone it for me, can someone let me know if
it exists?
Peace,

Subject: Dylan taping scene
Date: Thu, 13 Jul 2000 15:38:54 -0500
Let's face it folks, Zimmy's seen more than his share of bootleg albums.
Most of them not worth the vinyl they were stamped on. Anybody remember
albums? Well you can bet Bob does. He's been hosed probably more than any
rock artist in history. One of the biggest reasons Dylan is so anti-taping
is that the assholes who've been selling his shows over the past 30 years
are for the most part selling crap and he's pissed that he AND his fans are
getting ripped off. Since there's such a market for his stuff (even moreso
of late) he put the hammer down to discourage the scum-of-the-earth
bootleggers.
So Dylan's had a hard-on for tapers ever since GWW hit the streets. So
what? Tapers know it and adjust the MO accordingly. You've got to be
pretty invisible if you want to get out with an FOB tape these days, and so
the dance continues. It doesn't seem to affect the quantity or quality of
shows that are out there. If anything they seem to be improving on both
fronts every year. I'd bet he doesn't really care about the non-profit tape
trading scene nowadays.

Joshua Clark in #521:
>>....You are right about this one thing, there is much to be lost by going
over 0dB....<<
Which is exactly why David was advocating his conservative levels. It all
depends on how precious the recording is to you, and how unpredictable the
music level can get. When you've fallen foul of soprano's peaking 8 dB
louder in concert than in rehearsal, you tend to play safe with levels. For
"mustn't blow it" stuff, without resort to limiters, I use two decks
staggered 10 dB apart, plus a colleague to read ahead on the music score.
>>...This reduction in recording quality can be observed right on your meter!
I could tell you instantly the difference, play back two recordings
of the same concert, one recorded at -1dB peak, and the other at -6dB
peak, listening to both without changing the volume on the amplifier....<<
Wow! Eyes!...we poor wretches have to make do with judging recording
quality with our ears <g>. And do you mean the _same volume knob setting_
or the same actual sound pressure level, after compensating with volume
knob? David's comparisons would of course have been run at identical
playback loudnesss.
>The mics I use for live recordings have a dynamic range of 154dB...<
No they don't...they have a max SPL of 154 dB. To quote the dynamic range,
it is usual to subtract the Equivalent Input Noise, of say 15-25 dB.
>>...Just as a record, I have been making professional (I get paid) live
recordings of concerts and other events for 5 years now. I am a
student of the Center for Audio Recording Arts in Atlanta, GA.....<<
Good luck with your exams. As for your chosen career, be cautioned that a
lot of people on this list have a recording experience 10-15 dB longer than
yours, yet get paid nowhere near 10-15 dB as much <g>.
