That's not true. The Fostex has optical and electrical digital I/O, and there is a switch on the back that allows analog I/O at either domestic or pro levels, and of course there's no problem running coax cables into the XLRs as long as the levels are right. All of this was in the market posting last time I looked. > Also note that using _un_balanced inputs and outputs (assuming your deck > even has them available) are sonically superior to using the balanced > input Sure, if a balanced input is done really badly that's true, but I'd love to see someone prove that the difference in this case is audible. That applies to the optical vs coax "debate" as well, of course. One difference that undoubtedly is important is that the Pioneer S/PDIF receivers have some compatibility problems. [ For example, I had to get my Arcam digital tuner modified to produce a signal that the D5 would accept. They didn't charge me anything either; nice people. ] I've never heard of any compatibility problems with Sony digital I/O. Andrew.

From: da9ve stovall <da9ve@pcgeek.net> Subject: A Praire Home Companion Date: 13 Nov 2000 06:58:28 -0800 Hey everybody, I'm searching for a recording of this past Saturday's (November 11, 2000) Prairie Home Companion show (broadcast on NPR stations everywhere) for a friend of mine who attended the taping and would like to have a copy on CD-R. (He's got no DAT machine, but I can transfer from DAT if necessary, . . .) Anybody out there tape this fine show? Any help in finding a recording would be much appreciated - and I know about the streaming audio on www.npr.org (though, I guess, not specifically if they have audio of PHC - I just know they've got a lot of other shows they broadcast up for streaming), but would like something of better quality :-) Plenty to trade. The Audio Buddy is a nice pre-amp but it doesn't adapt well to portable use, because it runs on AC, not DC (batteries). By the way, Core Sound is a full-line Midiman/M-Audio dealers. From: Bob Ramstad <rramstad@alum.mit.edu> Subject: Re: A few notes on etiquette Date: 13 Nov 2000 19:26:08 -0000 1) DO NOT USE "ONE-PASS" DAT's. They are CRAP, and it's a slap in the face to send them to someone else who sends you brand new tapes. DAT media is dirt cheap now anyway, there's simply no excuse for this. 2) Record 1 minute of silence at the beginning of tapes, since that is where errors are most likely to occur. 3) Treat others as you would have them treat you. (No, I am not religious but it's good advice). i'm sure i'm not the only one out there that agrees wholeheartedly with 2 and with 3, but disagrees violently with the start of 1. i believe that folks should always discuss the type of media being used, and if trading, it is perfectly acceptable to request that someone use a specific type of media. (DDS or audio, one pass or not, specific brand preferences, etc.) to say that all one pass DATs are crap is a gross generalization and that it is always "a slap in the face" to send them to someone who sends you new tapes is flat out wrong. i have done trades with people where we agreed that they would provide new KAO 60 meter DDS and i provided one pass HP 60 meter DDS. if we're both happy, how can we be wrong? fyi, i was one of the people who introduced one pass DATs to many collectors and traders in the Bay Area in the early 90s. at that time, the one pass HP 60 meter DATs (made by Maxell) were much higher quality than most of the other DATs available -- except possibly for Panasonic audio DATs which cost quite a bit more. always remember that tape brand and type is YOUR PREFERENCE and is not likely to be shared by everyone you come in contact with. another bit of data, i've found that the HP one pass 60 meter tapes have aged much better than the Fuji, AGFA and Sony audio grade DATs. this probably has more to do with the intended use of DDS (long term archival backup) as opposed to anything specifically about them being one pass... i still use HP one pass 60 meter tapes for mastering, and have had less trouble with them than new Sony DDS tapes. -- Bob

It was a plain-text page of links to Outpost.com CDR media, Barnes & Noble coupon deals, OfficeMax deals, Buy.com, etc. There were no banners, no sponsorship, and it was updated daily like the guy said. Anybody know what the URL is? I lost it, and had such a great experience with the page. JH

Rob - I agree with you on trading one-pass for new, but the VHS-DAT comparison is apples & oranges. VHS is analog; taping over a pre-existing signal results in (IIRC) a 3 db S/N loss. Bulk erasing reduces or eliminates this loss. Digital recording doesn't have this constraint - there should be no signal loss on DAT or DVC Pro digital tape when recording over a pre-existing signal. Frank.

Oh, it's free too. ^^^^^^^^^^^^ I think Mike Looijmans (the author of CDWAVE) would beg to differ on this last point. CDWAVE is shareware and can be downloaded for trial use for 31 days. After that if you continue to use the application you are supposed to register by paying $10 to the author. Mike did a very nice job on this very useful utility, and I'm sure this last point just slipped your mind...right Rob? In all seriousness, anybody who uses this elegant utility should have no problem coughing up the 10 bones no questions asked. Alan
