hey gang,
I'm looking for a reputable and knowledgeable shop
in manhattan or Brooklyn in which I can bring my decks in
for a professional cleaning and calibration, etc. Are there
any recommendations? Or am I just better off sending the machines
off to pro digital in PA? The decks in questions are a Tascam DA-20
and a Sony D8. I'd appreciate any pointers.
Also, I'm looking to buy a 2nd home deck in the near future.
Are there any machines that can handle 90 meter tapes flawlessly?
How is the Sony PCM R500 with 90 meter tapes?
Thanks a bunch,
Anthony

Hey, a minidisc can quote 40 bit performance for all I care, but the fact is
it is a LOSSY compression scheme. That means if the algorithm thinks you
can't hear it, it won't record it. Just clone an MD through 3 generations
and judge for yourself.
DAT, for all its 16-bit antiquity, is not a lossy scheme and holds up quite
well for a tape-based format, thank you.
Just ask that guy with the 1978 SB DAT... :o)
Thanks!

I thought about Minidisc and did some recording with a Sony MZ-70 but

Hello Thomas,
There is an in-depth 7 page review of the PCM-M1 on my site at: <A
HREF="http://www.sonicstudios.com/d100rev.htm">
http://www.sonicstudios.com/d100rev.htm</A> This deck is working internally
with Dual 20 bit AKM A/D that is very good sounding all by itself.
It's most important to know that live 'Stereo' type recording is a very
special recording process that is almost entirely dependent on the type of
mic and how it's used. Using conventional high quality studio/stage type
microphones is most often not the best choice for getting consistent quality
2-track stereo recordings.
My site has <A HREF="http://www.sonicstudios.com/faqpg0.html">FAQ PAGES</A>
that discuss many aspects of using different microphones for stereo. Also
check out the multitrack page: <A
HREF="http://www.sonicstudios.com/multitrk.htm">
http://www.sonicstudios.com/multitrk.htm</A> for a better understanding of
the HRTF stereo recording method.

studio, outdoor, or live performance work; <A
HREF="http://www.sonicstudios.com/liteguy.htm">
http://www.sonicstudios.com/liteguy.htm</A>
There's over 250 megs of stuff on the site (soon to be over 1 Gig) dedicated
to stereo recording gear, tips, reviews, and MP3 recording session clips with
full liner notes. Take some time there to find the answers to most of your
questions and more.

You should get cables with 110-ohm nominal impedance. For short runs
it's unlikely to matter.

Believe me, I'd _love_ to believe that. But theory and experience say
otherwise. You just can't predict whether your AES3 and S/PDIF recorders will
accept to work together, it all depends on how the model is designed.
Sometimes it will work flawlessly (ie. the input is designed to accept both
levels _and_ the receiver chip is one of the few that recognize both AES3
and S/PDIF formats. Yes it does happen. But not so often). Sometimes it will
work in some instances but not in others (usually it's the AES3 status bits,
being misinterpreted by a S/PDIF-only receiver chip, that affect how the
audio data is interpreted, as described in the relevant standards),
sometimes it won't work at all.
In any case one should _not_ assume that an S/PDIF piece of equipment will
accept an AES3 signal (or the other way round), unless he/she _knows_ that
it is designed to accept both standards. Personally I would never bet my
day's work on it, unless it's explicitely written in the specs.
For further details regarding these issues, you can refer to the AES3
standard (publication Tech. 3250 of the EBU, and supplement 1) and the
S/PDIF standard (IEC-958 type II), or Ken Pohlman's "Principles of digital
audio", McGraw-Hill, ISBN 0-07-050469-5, pp. 317-336, that sums them up
pretty well.

Hi all...
I have a Sony R300 and D100. When making optical
clones, sometimes the start id's aren't transferred.
Anyone else have this problem?
If there's a silent space, it will write a start id
when the music starts again. It's a problem when
trying to clone a tape with id's already laid out
though. If anyone has a fix, please let me know.

Items for sale:
Sony D7: approx 100 to 150 hours of total use. I am the second owner. deck
was used to make masters. First owner taped three 60m dats on it and that
was all. Excellent condition, never any problems. I would like to get 300$
for this unit shipped to your door, or serious offers will be considered.I
will include the car adapter as well as the wall mount and a couple of tapes
if you like.
RMRD3 Adapter kit. Original box, original recipt. Looks like new. 110.00
shipped to your door.
Rolls pb 224 48 volt phantom Power Adapter, runs on 2 9v batterys. Along
with xlrs, has rca outs that were added. Make an offer.
2 Countryman ISOmax IV mics. Omni pattern. Looking to get around 175 for the
pair. You WILL need a preamp with gain to run these, i used a mixpad 4. I
have a few sample recordings available. I have 4 of these, I am keeping my
other pair. Great for taping on stage. For the money, i think this is a
reasonable price for the results that these mics produce. If you tape in
small venues and want to experiment, these can be fun. I would not reccomend
them for any event where there is excessive crowd noise.

I will also have these items for sale just after christmas.
