From: "Jacob Jordan" <jordanjacob@hotmail.com> Subject: Ron Levi's Wild Kingdom Date: Fri, 19 Jan 2001 21:23:07 -0500 Hello, Not sure if any tapers up North would be interested but thought I'd offer this tape up for trade as well as B&P for three. The source is CoreSound Binaurals>M1 and sounds pretty good. Probaly only 25 people there. One note, my battery failed in the first set and I missed about a minute or two switching from my pack to AA's. Which brings me to my next question ... I was using the Radio Slack batteries and I have burned them out I believe. I think I have overcharged them. So I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions about a similiar pack (the Radio Slack battery was small and skinny and I could stealth with it). Thanks for your suggestions, Jacob Guess I will also call Sonic Sense/Terrapin. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

Date: Sat, 20 Jan 2001 03:16:55 From: Steven Kingsley <eskay@ix.netcom.com> Subject: From: Steven Kingsley <eskay@ix.netcom.com> Subject: Phish responsible for datheads digest? Date: Thu, 18 Jan 2001 22:42:50 -0500 I mean, I love Phish & all and am sorry to hear of Mrs. Fishmans demise but I don't for one second think Phish is at all responsible for creating Datheads. Correct me if I'm wrong. Steve <snip> Either way, we all should be Grateful because if it weren't for Phish, there would be no DAT-Heads Digest.</snip> ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Sean has stated alot already. Maybe, you (Steve) took a little too literal of a meaning of what I said, as seen from your <snip> above. Or something..... Your <snip> and response are kinda like a journalist who takes part of what someone told them in an interview, and takes it out of context w/ his own spin. Nowhere in my statement do I say, "Phish is responsible for creating DAT-Heads". Without the spirit of the Grateful Dead we would not have gotten where we are at this time and therefore may not have DAT-Heads, as we know it. So they are definitely responsible in a big way. Any argument w/ that is futile. Period. Short and sweet. Here are some entries in the "Phish Companion", for FURTHUR reinforcement. (page 2) Spring 1990 "The Phish.Net begins as an email list of fans on the Internet." (page 2) August 8, 1991 "The Phish.Net digest is started." (page 3) The Usenet newsgroup rec.music.phish is created and messages once sent to the Phish.Net digest are forwarded to rec.music.phish." (page 3) Fall 1995 "Rosemary's Digest, a moderated digest composed of posts chosen from rec.music.phish by Rosemary Dean Macintosh, is started. The Phish.Net digest is discontinued." (page 4) October 1996 "The digiphish email list is started for DAT tapers and traders." (page 4) November 1997 "Rosemary Mackintosh hands her legendary digest of rec.music.phish's messages over to Benjy Eisen, who operates the digest ("The Eigest") through June, 1999." (page 5) August 22, 1999 Philip Zerbo, Brian Fisk and numerous Mockingbird Foundation contributors renew the Phish.Net digest (a digest of the substantive messages of rec.music.phish, including important Phish news." And there you have it. Without Phish, there would be no Phish fans. Without Phish fans, there would be no Phish.Net ....etc...etc. What's the addy you send your posts to again? Oh yea! dat-heads@datheads.phish.net That's right! So there you have it. This information in combination the Sean's previous post answers your question. <snip>It would still be around, just hosted somewhere else. Phish just makes it more convenient. <snip> What's that line from "Stash"? Maybe so, maybe not.... In some cases the bands benefitted from this, in some cases the fans benefitted from the band, but in all cases the fans (of many musics) benefitted from the fans. Initially we all benefitted from the US Government funding the NSFnet as well as organizations that put resources into UUCP maps and relays (AT&T, UUNET's non-profit original wing, DEC, and others). There are enough interdependencies among the various communities that saying "one benefitted from another" is an exaggeration. In fact, someone could equally argue that at least half of the "Phish" items you mentioned used "DAT-heads" resources because they ran on the same machine (including the "phish.net" DNS). Or you could argue that "without growth of the Internet, there would be no Phish.Net." There are a lot of important "Phish.Net" events that are not covered in your history, such as Marc Rouleau writing the digest software that Dead-Flames, (modified) the PhishNet digest and DAT-heads used (in 7/91), Matt L (and maybe Rich Fromm) printing t-shirts, Amy Skelton letting people put fliers on the merchandise table (~ '92) for the Phish mailing list. The Usenet vote I mentioned previously (where DAT-heads and others helped the Phish community). And aside from Rosemary, there is absolutely no mention of people who put a lot of energy into providing intelligent content for the Phish.Net (interviews, accurate tour/ticket information, tape reviews...). Saying "Phish.net" started in 1990 is probably revisionist, because it was "phish@world.std.com" or something like that. I think Matt/Rich's T-shirts were really when it started being called "phish.net" and it was still much later that the domain "phish.net" was registered. (Not by the band, and it required some creativity in writing an application because back then you had to justify to a US gov't funded agency that expected that was ".net" included lots of wires.) I guess to me these are the interesting facets of the history. And they all involve people who did something they didn't have to do. Much like "Band"-base is a poor substitute for listening to a show, a timeline is a cool reference, but it is no comparision for a social history (such as in studying world history). The proliferation of organizations and mailing lists is a great thing. However, I feel the truely admirable fact is that there is a growing community of people who are dedicating their own computing hardware and particularly their time, plus some borrowed network bandwidth to offer people live music from taping friendly bands. This would be your local etree server, a pretty cool individual. Ditto someone who puts time into evolving SHN or an application interface to the compression protocol for you. > What's the addy you send your posts to again? Actually, it will be dat-heads.org. But I need to ping someone to secondary the domain name. Sean

From: Jay Lyons <jayl@southeast.net> Subject: help with .wav & EQ'ing Date: Sat, 20 Jan 2001 10:00:09 -0500 Greetings, Did not know where to turn so I thought you folks might have an opinion ;) I managed to capture a solo piano last night from 11 rows back in a small 2000 seat house. Due to the conservative crowd I set my levels b4 the show (all the way up)in the restroom and never touched them once in the hall. Just hit record and ran with it. Now I want to convert to cd-r: First obvious problem is the applause being too loud, and I thought I could mark these sections without much problem and dump the volume on these. I figured dropping by -6 should do it but I'll try several ways b4 committing. My rig; VP88 w/lo-cut filter, M/S setting > InBox > D8 My biggest concern is even with the lo-cut filter in I can still hear low end rumble of the mic. Prolly from me hand holding it even tho I managed to only move/shift/relax between tunes. I might be imagining it but I think I can actually hear the tension in my hand when the mic was getting to be too much. Now, it's NOT as if this is a big deal. It's more a 'floor noise' type of sound,..that type where, to me, I would associate it with 'headroom'. I would like to loose as much of this as possible w/o getting into changing the music. reason; I'm a drummer! And NO I'm not deaf but I do prefer to listen to my music really loud. And the music sounds wonderful. But towards the end and at the beginning of the pieces when I have the music up in volume I have this low end rumble. I can use CoolEdit 2000 or SoundForge in doing this. Can anyone offer some suggestions? Btw, I do this all the time with the same rig. Usually electric music and the headroom in those shows doesn't have this rumble show up for obvious reasons. TIA Later, Jay http://users.southeast.net/~jayl/ for my traders list

Can the firmware in this particular DAT data drive be flashed to make it read the audio off of DATs? I vaguely recall some posts that were a bit more specific, but couldn't find them in the digests on DATheads. I'm hoping some kind soul has some info about this particular DAT data drive and whether or not it can be used for DAT to HDD purposes and if it can be used, how to do it. Thanks a ton. It seems that the only one's capable are the ones contracted for SGI, the Conner/Archive/Seagate line and the later Sony STD-9000's. Some of the non-SGI Conner's will take a flash upgrade, but I don't think a non-SGI Sony has any hope of being upgraded. From: acffh <morst@itis.com> Subject: SBD recording help. Date: Sat, 20 Jan 2001 15:01:34 -0600 Well, it depends on what you are using, as to the connectors on your DAT machine's end. . . Most Pro soundboards have a analog RCA pair available, oftentimes this goes to the sound engineer's tape deck, so you may be patching off another deck.. If this is the case, you may wish to patch digitally from a good pro deck, instead of using a small portable deck's a-d converters. If you are going direct from the board, there are actually 3 types of connectors you would be likely to see- XLR male on the board, (3 pins arranged triangularly in a round connector about 1/2 inch in diameter) 1/4" female on the board, commonly known as a Phone plug or the RCA's. If you have a set of RCA cables to go to your deck's input (RCA or mini I bet) then you can get adaptors at radio shack which are 1/4" phone plug male on one end, and RCA female on the other, they're cheap and I always wish I have 4 more of them. XLR-RCA is best accomplished via a custom cable (personal opinion), although I think SHURE or switchcraft makes a barrel connector which should be the same thing. now the only thing to think about is balanced vs unbalanced signal. . . 1/4" and RCA are unbalanced, so if your deck is RCA or mini, that's perfect. XLR is balanced, so you'd only need to take the + and GND connectors if you're making a cable to go xlr-rca. good luck and let me know if you need more help. PS- try to get there for soundcheck and get levels set approx. . . board feeds can get mighty hot! -tom Bill wrote: Might have access to a SBD patch at an upcoming event. Never done one before. What kind of patch cords should I bring? Anything else I should know.
From: Halfstep-2@webtv.net (Eric Reichenbach) Subject: thinking of selling my R300 + extended warranty Date: Sat, 20 Jan 2001 16:05:56 -0500 (EST) I sent it to Paul (Pro Digital) back in October to get cleaned and have a tension adjustment. It has been sitting in its box, unopened, since the first week of November. So, it is in perfect working order. I mentioned to Paul about selling it since I have a few other decks. He says I could get $450 for it. ($600 new.) Well, It still has 3 years left on the 5 year warranty, so I would want another $50 for that. ($100 new.) So, $500 total + shipping which shouldn't be much. If you are interested, feel free to drop me a line. Thank you, Eric
