In particular, the phantom was easy to turn off with any movement of the bag and the attenuator buttons were easy to set when adjusting levels. The phase reverse button never seemed to pose much of a problem. > applications (unlike the big ol' Lunatec 316 > http://www.sonicsense.com/316pics.html). We wanted to make it possible Its large, but many people use Apogees which are essentially in the same chassis. The battery/pre-amp unit worked pretty well, but it was a pain to still have to lug both around when you were using a gel cell external to it. But, plenty of people have stealthed with the original grace! > Regarding the other issue Sean Kennedy presented about the V2 power up > problem... > If you ever have a V2 that doesn't power up, try turning it back off, > turning off the phantom power (the 48v switches), then powering up > again. All V2's have a 5-year parts and labor warranty > and Grace Design has assured us that service requests are typically > handled with 24 hours of receiving a unit. To be clear, I am specifically talking about how the unit is calibrated and a special condition. That is, there is a voltage threshold where the unit will not power on and there is a voltage threshold where the unit powers itself off. I measured the former* and it was above the published warning threshold (5.75, 5.5 is off). If you tape for a long while at a festival and try turning off the lunatec to preserve battery you may find it not powering back on even though the "low battery" indicator has not flashed yet. There are two thresholds and they are tied together, the "power on" being above "turn off" or "flashing light." Turning off the phantom power is a good general suggestion because it could help avoid an initial voltage sag due to internal resistance of the battery (and the current state of it). Although my guess in this case is the voltage is sampled without load (since it never powers on) so this may or may not help? There is an internal pot which controls the thresholds and that can be lowered, the disadvantage is this may make the cutoff voltage low enough that you risk battery damage. That option is open to Grace, but this is not a "preamp requires fixing" issue. The technical procedure would be the same as that used when switching between 6V and 12V with different values (Grace does publish directions I believe). The best fix is to be aware of whether your batteries are getting low without relying totally on the flashing light. In normal taping where you turn it on and leave it on, this is not a concern. Sean * Note that the battery is not under load, so readings will be high compared to the voltage the battery can actually deliver.

Does anyone else have the intention and the nerve to bring it back to live?? I'd love to do it myself but since I'm no native english spaeking person I probably wouldn't be of much help here..But if noone else applies I could try my best here.. From: "Gary Davis" <gdavis@loop.com> Subject: Bootlegger of the Week: Interscope Records Reply-to: gdavis@loop.com Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2001 00:35:33 -0800 Apparently Interscope Records got ahold of a copy of Eminem & Elton John doing "Stan" at the Grammys last week, and decided to press up a few hundred copies to send out to radio stations. What's the big deal? Well, they don't really have permission from Elton John or the Grammy organization. But they're not really selling it (yet) so they hope no one will mind... --G

From: acffh <morst@itis.com> Subject: Klay is correct, thanks very much! Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2001 09:41:43 -0600 thanks for the professional help klay!!! I know how to hook the stuff up, but I don't always know how to explain it. It is a lot easier to teach others if you know the correct terms, so I must thank Klay for keepin it real out here in DAT-Land. he's quite right about how if those weird old NON_STANDARD boards are inverting, and they do it with a transformer, then all we have is absolute phase to worry about- I've checked with my ears- I don't think I can hear absolute phase- anyone think they can??? (so since I can't hear it, I assume that absolute phase makes no difference in unbalanced applications. . . anyone got any logical problem with that?- now relative phase is another matter entirely. . . that could be noticeable in a mix or something, but only when combining signals- which doesn't happen often in direct-to-two-track recording) again, thanks for the tech expertise, klay, the newbies need to know that the folks who've been around will help them understand the troubleshooting process, and keep the terms clear! regards and respect to all! -tom (suuuuh-nip) Why the confusion? No confusion if you know your differential terms, audio and how to apply it all. Also he offered: > but the oddball boards reverse signal from pin 2 to pin 3- weird, huh?) If indeed the board out is this way, it is OLD and WRONG. Also, if it old and wrong, its output is probably transformer isolated so who cares? (sssuuuuh-nip) Now, let's start a *really useless* discussion of absolute phase and if you can hear it and does absolute phase matter if it is unbalanced? (snip again) Truth! I know it takes a ton of computer mojo to do it but I think it must be possible. I'd like the following features on a mother board, ISA slot (must have ) cpu capacity of at least pentium 3 and the ability to take sdram rather than the expensive rdram. Has anyone successfully upgraded a za2 system from the pentium class machines ? or is everyone selling the cards on dat heads or ebay ? Input from successful zoltrix card users is also appreciated Cheers

I am based in Australia and what confused the bejesus out of me when I got back into audio and soldering my own cables again is that the old Australian standard of "PIN 3 =3D live" was... completely wrong! I had a look through all my cables from my late 1980s stage sound-guy days and yep, all of them are wired with P3 as hot. However, as Klay rightly points out, the international standard is P2 =3D hot. Of course this is not a problem when running bal->bal, but things get interesting when you go unbal->bal or reverse. This may muck up other Australian tapers - so watch out if you ever inherit older cables or else cables soldered by old hands! I have the ZA2 and the Zoltrix card. I do not generlly use them at the same time, but I have both working just fine on the ASUS P2B motherboards. Current configuration: P3-450, 192MB RAM, IDE HDs, CDROM and burner, 3com network card, 3DFX Voodoo 3500 TV AGP video card (R.I.P. 3dfx). Be careful with DMA and IRQ problems with the newer motherboards. Now if I could just get the damned ZA2 Linux drivers to work right!!!!! Anyone out there using Linux 2.4.x kernel with the ZA2 card? Maybe even the 2.2.x kernel? I would downgrade to get the ZA2 to work under Linux. ================ Warren Melnick Director of Research and Development Astata Corporation =====Original Message===== From: r2d2@quik.com [mailto:r2d2@quik.com] Sent: Wednesday, February 28, 2001 12:22 PM To: dat-heads@datheads.phish.net Subject: ISO new ISA slot motherboard for my za2 hello computer gurus I'm looking to upgrade my pc and keep my za2 card! It was while browsing your page that I decided to make my own battery pack for the Creative Nomad Jukebox from NiMH "D" cells. Now that I have seen how cool it was to do, I thought I would brave the D3 as well. You might want to consider making a pack for the Jukebox as well. It is selling like crazy and it will record 44.1k or 48k directly to its internal 6gig HD. I imagine it's only a matter of time before it catches on as a recording device. BTW: 23-25 hours on the BD? Damn. You using the MAHACell 8000mAh "D" cells?
