My only problem now is that the deck didn't come with any documentation. I was wondering if anyone out there own one of these decks. I would be glad to offer up a B&P for a photocopy of the DTC-A6 manual. I only trade DAT. Thanks heads, Stan http://stanleyewilley.tripod.com

From: acffh <morst@itis.com> Subject: DA-302 / DDS incompatibility Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2001 22:42:08 -0600 I have been told by some of my tech advisors that the Tascam 302 really freaks out on DDS tapes. if you compare the DDS tape's leader to that of an audio-grade dat, you'll see a few stripes of magnetic material interspersed with clear leader. This hangs the 302 (and probably other tascam decks) because it can't tell leader from tape- it goes back and forth, you hear what it's doing, and it's wearing the heads as it goes. . . how to make it stop? I dunno, but I wouldn't use those tapes in that deck, unless maybe you could record the first 10 seconds in a differnt DAT machine, then put the tape into the 302 but never rewind it all the way. If you don't have another deck, you could blow off absolute time and just hand-wind the tape a little, but that's akin to surgery, and ABS is rather handy. best of luck, I wonder what other people have discovered as a work-around for this?? -tom PS- to eject, maybe shut the power off, then when you turn it on, fast-forward before it has a chance to flip out??? sounds like a last resort, but it would beat grinding the heads up. -t -=-==--=-==--==-==--=-=-=-=--=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--==-=-=- I hope someone can help me on this one. I put a blank Sony DG60P into my 302 (DAT1) to record a show and it seems to have locked up. The display reads 'TOP' and it sounds like the motor keep going back and forth on deck 1. The problem is, it wont stop and it wont let me eject the tape. Is this a bad tape, or is something wrong with the deck??

From: da9ve stovall <da9ve@pcgeek.net> Subject: ANOTHER PLEASE TAPE: David Thomas Tour Dates in USA, Denmark & UK Date: 1 Mar 2001 08:44:11 -0800 Here's ANOTHER heads-up for a worthy taping venture: David Thomas (of Pere Ubu) and two pale boys are doing a very quick US/UK tour. Details below. David Thomas himself has said that taping is (paraphrased) OK as long as you're discreet about it. He's not going to have anyone looking for tapers, but if you set up a big rig, the venue might object. So, stealth in comfort, knowing you're not offending the performer. I'm hoping to catch the Chicago show (since I missed Ubu last time around), but (as I said in my plea for Robyn Hitchcock/Soft Boys reunion tour tapers), I've not exactly got the best-sounding mics, so it'd be way cool if someone else could nab that show, too. cheers, da9ve Subject: David Thomas Tour Dates in USA, Denmark & UK DAVID THOMAS AND TWO PALE BOYS ================================ David Thomas and two pale boys will make a quick cross-country tour in April promoting the release of SURF'S UP! before returning to the UK to tour with the full theatrical production of Mirror Man. From: Sean Madigan <sm6325@brockport.edu> Subject: AT822 - Speaker Vs. Headphone sound quality Date: Thu, 1 Mar 2001 13:10:04 -0500 Hello all, I tapped the Yonder Mountain String Band a couple of days ago in a small club. I used an AT822 stereo mic and an MD-SR60s- through the mic input on low sensitivity. Here's my question: When played through my stereo, it sounds fine. However, when I listen through headphones (on the MD unit) it sounds awesome- more lows and better instrument seperation! Why is this, does it have to do with the XY placement of the capsules? ======================================== Sean Madigan Email: sm6325@brockport.edu "SUNY College at Brockport"

From: Wes Wagnon <weswag@ix.netcom.com> Subject: Venue Security-Legal Help. Date: Thu, 01 Mar 2001 14:21:07 -0800 A lawyer (and occasional taper) responds: Bill Tatina complains that the venue security demanded he turn over his mics, then refused to return them to him after the show. A concert venue is a private business. It can impose requirements upon its paying guests, and commonly forbids them from taping. These requirements are part of what a lawyer would view as a contract between the venue and the guest, which would include the express terms of the ticket (including fine print on the back), express terms of warning signs, and perhaps unexpressed but "understood" terms regarding conduct of the guests (such as reasonable behavior). As a private business, the venue cannot enforce state or federal criminal law. They cannot impose a "fine" for violation of their rules. The venue cannot take your property: while it would not be unreasonable for the venue to demand temporary possession of your taping equipment for the duration of the show (to prevent you from taping, which is a violation of their rules and probably their contract with the artists), they must return it to you at the conclusion of the show, because it is your personal property. Their alternative remedy is to eject you from the premises. Great. So now what do you do? First, write a letter to the venue, demanding return of your personal property within a reasonable period of time (ten days sounds right to me). Describe the property in sufficient detail. Describe the circumstances under which the venue took possession, and promised to return it to you. Be brief, succinct, and to the point. Describe the reasonable value of the property (consider attaching some proof of its value) and suggest that they pay you the value of the property in the event they are unable to return the property to you, with payment to be made within the period of time specified. Finally, explain that, should they fail to comply, you intend to pursue your remedies in court. Write a nice, but firm, letter that will look reasonable to a judge at a later time. You are not trying to convince them, just make a clear demand. Second, file suit against the venue in small claims court after your demand time has expired. The relief you seek is monetary damages: the value of your personal property that was taken and not returned. Third, go to court. Bring as exhibits a copy of your demand letter and some proof of the value of the property. Explain your case: the security guard, who is the agent of the venue, demanded possession of your property, and promised to return it. You have demanded return of the property, but they have failed to return it. Ask that the court grant you judgement for the value of your property. Explain the value, and provide the court with whatever proof of its value that you have, both in written form and by orally describing how you acquired it. Be brief and to the point. If asked what you were doing, explain that you were making a recording for your own personal use and enjoyment, just like some people take photographs, and that you had a dispute with the venue over your right to do so, but that you agreed to be cooperative with them and turn over some of your equipment for the duration of the show. Your case is not about whether you had a right to tape or not, but about the failure of the venue to return your personal property. If you had checked a coat, or a camera, and they failed to return it, you would be entitled to recover the value of the property, and the same rule should apply here. Hire a lawyer? Probably too expensive. Most lawyers wouldn't mess with this case, as it would require too much time and the amount at stake is too little, relative to what the legal fees would be. You could pay a lawyer for his or her time to write a demand letter, and it might give you an edge, but it will cost. My suggestion is to handle it on your own, as outlined above. Small claims court is for small disputes like this. They usually don't permit lawyers to represent clients, and insist that all litigants represent themselves to even things out. The judges handling small claims don't require legal formalities by the litigants, but they insist that people remain calm, explain their dispute, answer the judge's questions, take their turns, don't interrupt, and behave themselves. Nolo Press publishes a number of legal guides for non-lawyers, including a guide to handling claims in small claims court. They have a web site. I recommend them highly. Next time? I think the best way to resolve these disputes at the time is to agree to turn over the tape and, if they insist, leave the venue. If they insist on taking possession of your gear, make sure you get a receipt (ideally, one that describes the equipment) and having multiple witnesses wouldn't hurt. But I would avoid turning over taping gear if at all possible: you might not get it back, or you might get it back damaged. I wouldn't be afraid to insist that they call the local police. You can explain to them that you have a dispute with the concert venue, and that you are willing to leave but now they won't let you. The police cannot enforce the venue's private rules, but they can intercede to prevent the venue from restraining you, and might even be helpful in preventing the venue from trying to retain possession of your rig. The laws (criminal and civil) that could potentially apply to this overall situation are going to vary from state to state, and my comments are just suggestions based upon generally applicable law. The New York statute that was recently posted here would apply only within that state, but I would recommend that any NY taper carry a copy of it when engaging in conduct to which it might apply, as it might assist in the "negotiations" with security. I would be surprised to find similar statutes in other states, just because nobody has bothered to try and get such laws passed. Sorry about the long post, but this appears to be an area of continuing interest on this list and I thought I'd offer what help I could. GOOD LUCK! --wes wagnon Oakland, CA
