From: MudShark29@aol.com Subject: Seeking SnoCore Shows Date: Thu, 1 Mar 2001 18:34:39 EST Hello, Im looking for quality recordings of the recent SnoCore tour--Especially Atlanta. There were lots of rigs there, but it also happened to be my bachelor party night so I wouldn't want to mess with it. If anyone has any of these shows and would like a trade see my list: www.geocities.com/mudshak29/index.html thanks preston
From: "Doug Hagewood" <dhagewood@mailandnews.com> Subject: FS: Pioneer D-HS5 Reply-To: <dhagewood@mailandnews.com> Date: Wed, 28 Feb 2001 19:27:34 -0500 I need to part with my little used D-HS5. It is a just like a Tascam DA-20 with the additional benefit of supporting both optical and coax digital I/O as well as 96k recording on standard DAT tapes (it also does the standard 32k/44.1/48k too). It also has a DAC passthrough mode for both digital inputs and the analog inputs as well. --In an always pimpy gold inish. --cosmetically and functionally perfect. It was in a separate room away from my "real" audio stuff and was used for play only. I have the orig box, but no remote. It uses the same remote as a DA-20 so I used a learning remote to control it. I would like to get $300 for it. I prefer paypal, but will take money orders or certified checks. It can be seen here: http://perso.club-internet.fr/farzeno/piodek.htm Feel free to ask questions. dh@speakeasy.org or dhagewood@mailandnews.com Thanks, Doug

From: Beast914@aol.com Subject: "Splitting" an AES/EBU- How? Date: Thu, 1 Mar 2001 20:32:28 EST Hi all!! I have an AES/EBU source and I need to send it to two separate recipient decks at the same time- both about 30 feet away. Does anyone know how to split the digital audio? Can I just "Y" split the XLRs with wires right out of the back of the source deck? Or is there a modestly priced DA for this purpose? Also (and I'd really freak if somebody had the answer to this one), is there such a box that will take an Serial Digital Interface signal and "break" it apart separating the SDI video signal from the four audio channels that are in that one jack? It would help me alot. Thanks in advance. D

Agreed this is a great motherboard, but I wouldn't recommend it for use with a ZA2...I built a system around this board, installed the ZA2, and was beset with channel swapping problems, which I never had before. Apparently the culprit is the VIA Chipset drivers, but updating the drivers didn't help. I think all Athlon boards use these drivers, but I could be wrong...am I? If you're willing to use recdat in DOS mode all was fine, though. ZA2 is gone now. Paul

From: Paul and Jen Beichert <pnjbeichert@earthlink.net> Subject: Tascam DA-302 / DDS Incompatibility Date: Thu, 01 Mar 2001 23:15:46 -0500 FWIW, I've used ONLY DDS tapes in my DA-302 since I bought it in 1998 and have had NO TROUBLE AT ALL with them. I've encountered only one difficulty similar to the problem that was recently posted about having the deck repeatedly try to spool up the tape. This was due to a worn drive belt that was - according to Pro Digital - something that will eventually occur with normal wear and tear. It was repaired, no problem, and I've haven't another problem like it since. In my experience, DDS tapes - both 90 meter and 60 meter (I use primarily Sony DGP) have worked wonderfully in my DA-302. Obviously, my unit is one of the first generation DA-302s. I understand that some improvements have been made with the more recent versions but I seriously doubt that the compatiblity with DDS tapes has changed. My 2 cents, Paul

I have all receipts as well. I'll even throw in a sony coax>7-pin digi cable. asking $550.00. thanx, bill

From: David A Kochman <first_tube@juno.com> Subject: DA-302 tape problems Date: Thu, 1 Mar 2001 21:41:08 -0800 I've never had any problem with any DDS tapes in my 302....Actually the only time I have problems is when tapes don't have ABS time on them, you can't do a dub, because the deck thinks the beginning of the tape is really the end and just stops. I use all different kinds of DDS's in the machine, Maxell, KAO, Quantegy, Sony's, 90 and 60m and never ever had a single one snap, or have screwey problems (knock on wood) SO...at least IMO DDS tapes aren't the problem. Anyone else with a 302 have any problems??? I'm sorry I'm not that much of a help..However I don't do any ff/rw or playing with that deck...its my baby, and only used for dubbing. I let my DTC 700 do everything else.....I'm surprised how well built the 700 is though...the DTC-700 plays with no audible errors and has ~5000 hours of play time on the heads, and I've used a cleaning tape maybe 5-6 times, and not in at least 500 hours, plus it fast forwards and rewinds all of my tapes. That thing is a tank... Check out my tape page at www.phishhook.com/lists/First_Tube ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! From: "Bryce" <spaceism@sympatico.ca> Subject: Sony PCM-700,PCM-500 VS Tascam DA-40 Date: Fri, 2 Mar 2001 02:31:08 -0500 Sonically, what manufacturer makes the better deck? I know the PCM-700 is probably more than a DA-40 but take the 500 for example which is probably around the same price. Reason being I bought a DA-40 last month and I want to know if I wasted my money on an inferior deck.
From: "Bryce" <spaceism@sympatico.ca> Subject: PRO SONY manufactures Tascam DAT decks Date: Fri, 2 Mar 2001 02:31:13 -0500 Out of curiosity - I was comparing Tascam and Sony decks just from cosmetics in catalogs and what not. I am curious, do any of you professionals out there from the recording industry know if the SONY PRO division manufactures the Tascam decks? By picture the buttons look in different places but I wonder if the parts are the same. Thanks

From: "Chris van Rensburg \(a.k.a. For the longest time my studio has been equipped with both a Tascam DA-20 and a Sony TCD-D8. The TCD-D8 has served me well in doing field recordings, while the DA-20 has served me well in transferring those recordings to my PC's digital IO card. I used to use the DA-20 for plenty of other things, but it seems that lately all of my archiving is being done on CD-R. So now, 3 rack spaces in my studio are being occupied by something that is really only being used as a digital output "proxy" for my digital-output-challenged portable DAT. If I could just get a digital output solution for my portable DAT, then I could sell my DA-20 and be left with both money and rack space to spare. Mmmmmmmmmmmmm.......money. Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm.......rack space...... So, my plea goes out to you all. Who has and would like to sell to me the fabled and mythical "RM-D3K" that seems so damned hard to find at any audio / music stores? If you possess the elusive "RM-D3K" but are not ready to sell, can you at least advise me on where and/or how I can purchase this item. Do you know of a dealer? If I can't get hold of a RM-D3K, then I'll resort to the 7-Pin-To-Coax cable offered by Core Sound (http://www.core-sound.com/7-pin-coax-blurb.html) or the DIGI I/O-P cable offered by Oade Brothers Audio (http://www.oade.com/dat/audiocenter/oadecable.html). But, I'd rather spend a little more and get the other added features of the RM-D3K. -- Regards, Chris (a.k.a. Headphone sound quality Asked: > Here's my question: When played through my stereo, it sounds fine. However, > when I listen through headphones (on the MD unit) it sounds awesome- more lows > and better instrument separation! Why is this, does it have to do with the XY > placement of the capsules? No, it has to do with those pesky laws of physics. The headphones are coupled closer to your ear canal and therefore better imaging and frequency response are achieved. What kind of speakers are you using? Those toy things that come with that computer and are some people's benchmark for "quality sound"? Then check the bass boost switch on the MD player. Also, the "effect" you experience has nothing to do with the X-Y mic configuration. Thanks! -- Regards, Klay Anderson, D.A.,Q.B.E. Klay Anderson Audio, Inc. http://www.klay.com 1.800.FOR.KLAY
From: Warren Melnick <warren.melnick@astata.com> Subject: RE: DAT-heads Digest #801 Date: Fri, 2 Mar 2001 09:09:45 -0500 The channel swapping is a problem that I identified with Greg years ago when I first got the card. It has to do with either IRQ or DMA release time. Usually it can be solved by turning off auto-insert-notification on your CDROM drives. However, the VIA chipset that the ABit boards are based on are known to cause problems with the ZA2. I have not had a chance to put together a system with the ABit boards yet, although i was planning on doing so sometime in the next few months. How is tech support on the ZA2 these days? I have not had a need to call for support in years. I literally bought mine from Greg himself and used to call him directly with problems. I imagine that as the company has grown and the board has gotten wider distribution that it is not quite this easy anymore. ================ Warren Melnick Director of Research and Development Astata Corporation =====Original Message===== From: Paul Kaytes [mailto:pkaytes@att.net] Sent: Thursday, March 01, 2001 9:25 PM To: DATHeads Digest Subject: RE: DAT-heads Digest #801 > > Subject: ISO new ISA slot motherboard for my za2 > > I have not used the za2 but I just put a system together using an ABit > KT7A motherboard. From: "Ephraim Diament" <ediament@unicast.com> Subject: NYC Venue Problems Date: Fri, 2 Mar 2001 10:42:11 -0500 Hi, So recently I've been reading here of nightmare stories about venues here in NYC. I've been taping here for some time now, and luckily I've never been confronted with security (well not for taping at least). What venues are all these problems occuring? How do you think you were caught? Were patted down walking in? Were you playing with your rig throughout the show? I've always found that joyrigging yourself before the show in a bathroom stall, along with setting your level QUICKLY and leaving them alone, works well on not even being seen by your neighbors, then walkout normally and de-rig in the cab home. Let's try to learn from these expierences so the archive of live music can grow. Thanks for the bandwidth, ephraim
