From: J P Fitch <jpff@maths.bath.ac.uk> Subject: How many DAT machines are there? Date: Sat, 3 Mar 2001 16:33:32 GMT We were discussing DAT machines the other day at the university, and someone said that they were dead technology and no one has one these days. I thought about this, and I seem to know so many people who have portable DATs, as well as the studio models I see....so I started wondering exactly how common portable DAT machine are. There do not seem to be many models between which to choose; how commoner are minidisk machines? I realise that this mailing list may be a biased sample, but I could not think who else to ask! ==John ffitch

I recently moved to Dat> Plextor and no longer need my brand new Tascam CD-RW 700. It has burned less than 30 discs. Also, I just had it checked out at the local pro shop and it's a perfect machine. Originally purchased from Terrapin Tapes. Original carton, all materials, manuals etc.. $450 and I pay UPS ground shipping. Paul

I ordered one and absolutely love it! It's 399 bucks at best buy but crutchfield has it for 299! This is a great company to order from and has a wonderful return program if it doesn't work out. Also, they have a referal program where you get an additional 25 dollars off if you use my referal code: 20686263 Email me if you have any questions about the machine or ordering. I Love my machine and look forward to setting up some indie trades ASAP. :) Also, I can use the credits I receive for more cdrs. From: "john kupchik" <trellisaze@gmx.co.uk> Subject: D-VHS format Date: Sat, 3 Mar 2001 22:04:55 -1000 I am wondering if anyone here has heard of the new D-VHS format? It was = developed by JVC, the inventors of the original VHS format, and seems to = basically be to video what DAT was (and still is) to audio. One D-VHS = tape holds 44.4GB. The transfer rate in HS mode is 14.1Mbps, in contrast = to DVD's 4.7Mbps. It has TWICE the resolution of DVDs. You can record on = the tapes just like you record on a DAT. You can also play/record = regular VHS tapes, it's backward compatible (uses a complex 8-head = system). There is also a LS mode similar to the DAT LP mode where data = is transfered at half speed (obviously). What is more shocking is you = can get one of these for less than many DAT machines, I found one for = sale online here for only $684!! http://www.globe-mart.com/audvid/dss/jvc/HM-DSR100RU.htm I wonder if this would be a better means of archiving our DATs? And of = course, it will open up a whole new world of live Video trading--imagine = getting "clones" of live videos with absolutely no quality loss no = matter the generation!!! I believe there is a copy protection scheme in = place, similar to SCMS though, but that can always be worked around. :-) Here's a link to JVC's D-VHS homepage where you can read up on it:=20 http://www.jvc-victor.co.jp/english/D-VHS/dvhs-e.html Sorry if this has been discussed before, I've only been on this list a = few months. But it would interesting to hear what others think of the = possibilities of the D-VHS. Also, does anyone here HAVE one of these = yet? If so, could you give some impressions of it, ie D-VHS vs. DVD, and = whether it is advantageous to archive DATs on D-VHS's (I think they = should just call them DVTs really, that's what they are-- "Digital Video = Tape"!!)? thanks, john ========================================= http://www.mp3.com/thewaterfalleffect
