From: Evan Radecki <evan1@optonline.net> Subject: Sony PCM-R300 or similar Date: Sat, 10 Mar 2001 11:18:48 -0500 Hi, I'm quite new to the DAT-Heads list, and also new to DAT. I'm looking for an inexpensive DAT deck. SCMS must be ignored/overridden, XLR I/O is not important, but the deck must be reliable. I have about $700 to spend.....Any reccomendations? Thanks, evan
From: Halfstep-2@webtv.net (Eric Reichenbach) Subject: Aiwa CD-recorder from Crutchfield - WARNING. Date: Sat, 10 Mar 2001 12:18:19 -0500 (EST) There was recently a post about this unit on sale for $300. Well, it is likely a great unit for the price, but it only uses audio CDrs which are damn expensive (~$2-3 each.) It does not accept the computer CDrs that most of us use. Just an FYI.

Hi Melissa (and all), We have seen several reports of this exact problem recently. Now, first and foremost, most DAT recorders are two head units and like 2-head cassette decks, while recording, they only reveal what is going into the machine. ***LEVELS on your METERS WHILE RECORDING are NO GAURANTEE that you are actually getting anything on tape.*** If all is going well, of course you will have a tape but there are several problems that can occur. Dirty heads make bad tapes: However, they don't reveal themselves until it is too late. It will appear that all is going well during the recording but upon playback, you will be disappointed. Dirty heads frequently create digital noise and dropouts on a recording. Worse yet, they can be so dirty that they do not actually write anything to tape. Tape Misloads: While I haven't seen many reports of this in years, I am starting to see a recent trend in the past couple weeks. Unfortunately, it seems to be specific to SONY DG 60 (and possibly 90) P tape. Without condemning SONY tapes, we will continue watching for this issue. A few folks have mentioned this problem to us lately and they have noted that occassionally the SONY tapes, when ejected from the machine, are coming out with the tape shell door stuck open. One common symptom of a misload, dirty heads (or whatever is at the source of this issue) is the machine's failure to write A-Time. Ejecting the tape and reloading it may solve the problem. Another technique of bygone years, when we used to use the Panasonic SV-250's and 255's was the "load check." This machine was notorious for not getting the tape in the guides properly and consequently leaving tapers with useless tapes. Load Check Procedure: Record a minute, or so, of audio. Rewind. Playback the tape. If audio is present on the tape, you are okay. Just don't power down the deck again as the power cycle will cause the machine to reload and it could go wrong the next time. This won't be fun to have to do just minutes before a show but it will indicate that the tape is loaded properly. FWIW, we have been using a lot of SONY DG 60&90P's in our home/studio decks with 100% success. Of additional interest is the new SONY DG 90 Premium tape. We just received a shipment of these and they are working beautifully in all of our machines. As we do NOT want to create a scare about any given tape type, we suggest taking a little extra care to perform the "load check" discussed above to assure your tapes are loading properly. We would appreciate any feedback regarding tape problems. Please forward any tape any reports to us at nutter@sonicsense.com Happy Taping, Marc Marc Nutter Mojan Parker Mike Remmers Sonic Sense, Inc. 2755 S. From: "Eric McRoberts" <danks@bu.edu> Subject: Potential SBM-1 problems?? Date: Sun, 11 Mar 2001 01:14:06 -0500 I was taping a show tonight, and for the first time I had a non-human error problem with the recording and I am unsure of the cause of the problem. Just for the record, the equipment being used for the recording was Schoeps mk4->Huber Box->SBM-1->M1. I have been using this gear for some time with very positive results, thought tonight things did not happen as planned. After the first set I turn the light on the M1 and notice that the right channel is pinned. I did a little whistle to see if I got any response from either channel, to no avail. I then took the deck out of record mode and placed it back in record mode, the right channel was still pinned. This got me a little worried. I went outside and tightened all the cables being used and everything was fine. During set 2 the same thing happened, this time only about a half hour into the set. I am now home and listening to these spots. My recording goes from a very clear recording to all of a sudden, static. It sounds similar to something you would get from having your amp set to radio, but no antenna plugged in...though the sound is much higher pitched. For a few minutes you can hear muffled music coming from the right channel, then it's complete static. Every few minutes a huge blip of noise will shoot through the left channel, almost like loud diginoise, but it's much more heinous(if something is possible). Is this a problem with the SBM-1, or the Huber Box?? I got home and set the Huber->M1 and recorded a few mins, sounds fine. I then turned everything off, plugged in the SBM-1 and rolled off a few mins, sounds fine. Could this be a coble issue?? I recently purchased a pair of 1 fot Audio magic Presto II rcas from Marc Nuter and I've been nothing but happy with them. I always tighten the barrels very tightly before getting to my spot. After the first set it looked as though everything was connected very correctly. The actives from the mk4->huber were surely tightened and did not get loosened at all. What could be the potential cause of my flawed recording??? Any ideas would be happily accepted. Eric McRoberts
