I have another suggestion when using Sony D7s and D8s - decks that seem
most prone to the 'blanking' problem. Before loading the tape turn the
light
on. Insert the tape and shut the lid. If the light turns off then you know
the
deck had a problem loading the tape which caused the deck to reset itself.
If this happens you should eject the tape, turn the light on and close the
lid
again. However when the light doesn't turn off this does not assure you
that the tape loaded properly and you should probably still follow Marc's
load check procedure.
peace, further...

I have five Sony 120M Computer Grade DAT Tapes. I bought these when I first
got into DAT. I didn't, however, know that these were not recommended as an
audio medium. All the tapes are still individually wrapped and still in the
original Sony box they arrived in.
I want to get rid of these and will trade them straight up for Five Brand
new Sony 60M or 90M tapes.

Allmans is tape from your seat, wherever that may be.
The Beacon manager is sometimes an asshole about letting you raise
your stand, so you might have to wait until the lights go down, if
you're close enough to an aisle for him to hassle. (On the other
hand, the ushers take bribes, and they're cheap and stay bought.)

I have been searching for information on stealth type microphones and have
not been able to come up with very much.
I was hoping someone on the list might be able to help.
I am planning on using a Sony M1.
I am looking for a nice, decent starter set of mics.
I would prefer the stealth type to avoid a large setup.
I would mostly be recording in bars/small venues with probably no more than
500 people.
I am sure the range would be from quiet to very noisy.
Has anyone tried the Sony clip microphones? I am not sure of the model#.
What about the Core Sound?
Any info would be appreciated.

Subject: DAT>CDR how to increase loudness of recording????

Hi,
Can someone please help me out. I have a few clean
recordings on DAT that I have recorded and now I want
to transfer them to CDR. I have transfered a show from
my D-7 to my computer via my Midiman DiO 2448 with a
SPDIF cable. My show sounds great but the level is a
little low, but I cant figure out how to bump up the
levels to a descent standard so I dont have to crank
up the volume knob on my stereo?? At the moment Im
using Steinburgs Wavelab and using Peak Master to
change the level of the recording, but this seems a
little hit and miss. I can get the highest spikes to
peak, but when I burn it and play the disc on my
stereo it still seems not as loud as an orginal
recording where I would play that at 1/4 volume I
would have to play mine at 1/2. Can some recommend a
way that I can make my recording louder or tell me
what Im doing wrong. I have heard other DAT>CDR
transfers and they so loud.
Thanks in advance,
Gareth
PS Im on a PC not a MAC.

By far the easiest way to do this is to purchase a pre-made 1/8" stereo
plug to dual RCA plug cable (ie, a portable dat machine > stereo system
cable), and chop off the RCA plugs. You can then solder XLR connectors
to the chopped-off ends. This way, you only have to solder on the relatively
large XLR end, and not on the tiny 1/8" end. This is also a good approach
to building RCA > XLR cables.
It's already been discussed here at great length which pins of the XLR to
use, but in general, I would connect the shield of the cable to the ground
and "minus/cold" pins of the XLR and the signal (inner) wire to the
"plus/hot" pin. Which pin is which? I'm the wrong person to ask!

I've seen a flakey cable at the end of a chain cause all the other decks
to flash "no input". Naturally, it was the last one we tried reseat
since you normally expect problems to be upstream. Don't remember the
exact configuration, but it was a mix of the usual D8/D7/M1/minidisk
recorders patched out of my SV-255.

Date: Tue, 13 Mar 2001 13:28:54 -0500
Hi,
I am writing to find out if anyone knows of a good repair facility in
greater Boston for my Fostex D5.
Symptom: when playing most of my tapes, error counter shows errors between 1
and 8 on the B head only. Some errors are audible. When playing tapes it
recorded, errors are around 6.
Manual wet cleaning made no difference. Some (very few) tapes show almost no
errors at all. Although I have cleaned it a few times before, this deck has
not been in for service (alignment) since I got it 6 years ago.
My other deck shows far fewer errors on almost all tapes, although some
tapes read errors on both decks (these same tapes used to be fine)!?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Guys,
I just got a 500e for a darn good price, and I've got
a question on the 15 pin connector. I know pins 14 and
15 are the power connectors, but when I took the 15
pin connector apart, it looks like there are two wires
to each pin (total of 4, 2 to 14 and 2 to 15). I'm
curious as to why. Some kind of grounding setup? Is it
OK to just wire pin 15 as +12v and pin 14 as ground,
or is there something else I need to be careful of?
Thanks,

As with many Sony issues, it's a little complicated. The complication
stems from the fact that Sony decided that while its portable DAT decks
("DATmen") comply with the S/PDIF data format standard, they do not
comply with the S/PDIF voltage level standard. Adding complication is
the fact that successive generations of DATmen are not voltage
compatible with earlier generations.
Here's a little history that should explain:
The Sony TCD-D3 was the first of the Sony portable DAT decks to use the
7-pin I/O connector. It used much higher voltage levels (roughly 5.2
Volts) than the S/PDIF standard's .5 Volts. Sony provided two interface
cables: the RK-DA10 which was an "active" (voltage level translating)
cable to allow the -D3 to accept the lower S/PDIF-standard voltages; and
the POC-DA12 cable with Toslink (fiber optic) input and output.
The next generation TCD-D7 and its successor, the TCD-D8 (solving most
of the -D7's transport problems), used slightly lower voltage levels:
around 4 Volts. The same two cables worked fine with them.
The next generation is the current one: the TCD-D100 and the pro
(SCMS-free) PCM-M1. It uses a still lower voltage: 3.5 Volts. The old
cables won't work on this voltage so Sony issued new ones: the RK-DA10P
for coaxial (RCA) input, with a gray casing instead the older RK-DA10's
black one; and a variety of POC-DA12x cables, each having a different
suffix:
POC-DA12P is 7-pin to optical Toslink digital in/out
POC-DA12MP is 7-pin to optical Miniplug in/Toslink out
POC-DA12SP is 7-pin to optical Miniplug in/out
There are also third party suppliers of 7-pin cables.
The Oade Brothers and one or two other shops have started with the Sony
RK-DA10 (black casing) and RK-DA10P (gray casing) active input cables
and added a *passive* output. Since the outputs are passive, the
voltage the cable will provide depends on the model of recorder you're
using. If you use a -D3 it'll be 5.2 Volts; if it's a -D7 or -D8 it'll
be 4 Volts; if its a -D100 or -M1 it'll be 3.5 Volts.
Core Sound provides the widest variety of cables, but they're all
passive. "Passive" means that they do not translate voltage levels.
they are not based on Sony's RK-DA10 but rather on Core Sound's own
7-pin plug. The plug does not have the metal shield around the pins
that Sony's plug has, and so is a bit less rugged. Even so, thousands
of the cables are in use and they have proven reliable over 6+ years of
use.
Again: There are *no* cables that are active (voltage translating) for output.
So what can you hook your deck up to?
The rule is that higher voltages can feed lower voltages with no
problems. Since the DATmen have higher voltages than the S/PDIF
standard, all Sony DATmen can output to other S/PDIF devices (e.g., CD
recorders and S/PDIF soundcards with coaxial inputs) reliably and with
no need for active cables.
In contrast, for a strictly S/PDIF compliant device to feed a DATman,
you'll need an active input cable for your DATman. Luckily, most common
non-Sony and Sony-non-DATman DAT machines put out much higher voltages
than the S/PDIF standard. For example, Tascam DAT decks (DA-P1, DA-20,
DA-20II, DA-30, DA-30II) all will output to all Sony DATman reliably,
without active cables. And most Sony home DAT decks (e.g., DTC-A7) do
the same.
Most home CD players however, are strictly S/PDIF compliant and you'll
need an active cable to feed your DATman.
What about daisy chains at shows?
If you are in a daisy chain consisting only of DATmen, if you have the
correct active input cable for your deck, then you can reliably accept
signals from any of the other DATmen.
If you are using a passive input cable, remember that only older
generation decks or ones of your deck's generation will reliably feed
your deck; you probably won't be able to accept a feed from a deck of a
later generation. So, if you have a -D3, you can accept a feed from
another -D3. If you have a -D7 or a -D8, you can accept a feed from a
-D3, a -D7 or a -D8. If you have a -D100 or an -M1, you can accept a
feed from any machine. (This is the origin of folks wanting some
machines to be at the tail of the chain and others at the head.)
For mixed active/passive chains, remember that *all* cables are passive
on output, so even folks with so-called "passive" cables can feed all
active cables with no problem. For example, you can have an -M1 with a
passive cable at the head of a chain, feeding a -D3 with an active
cable. That -D3 can then feed a passive -M1 or any other combination of
decks and cables.
Remember that if you have a TCD-D100 or PCM-M1, and you need an active
input cable, you *must* buy a cable based on the RK-DA10P with the gray
housing; the older RK-DA10 with the black casing may or may not work.
I hope this helped!
